Always a hit. I first came here during Dollar Stroll, but I've actually been here before outside of the event too, and I've loved it every time. It's a family business connected with Alif Brew, which is also one of my favorite places in West Philly, so I was already rooting for them. There was a HUGE line for Dollar Stroll, but honestly, I get it. Ethiopian fried chicken is not something you see everywhere, and it's worth waiting for. I got the berbere wings, and they were so good. Super crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and packed with that warm, aromatic berbere flavor. It's flavorful without just being spicy for the sake of being spicy. I also heard the breading is gluten-free, which is a really nice bonus. I also got the hibiscus drink, and this was probably one of my favorite parts. It's tart, floral, refreshing, and has mint in it, so you get this really nice cooling finish. The hibiscus gives it that bright fruity-floral flavor while the mint keeps it from feeling too heavy or sweet. Perfect drink alongside the wings. And then the rose pudding. I LOVE this. I'm guessing there's rose water in it because it has that gentle floral aroma and flavor without tasting like you're eating perfume. It's creamy, smooth, lightly sweet, and the rose flavor comes through in a really delicate way. Honestly, I could eat a whole bowl of this. The space is small, but there's enough room for a couple of smaller groups to sit and hang out. What really makes this place special, though, is the people. It's a family business and you can feel that immediately. Everyone was so friendly, generous, and personable, even with the huge Dollar Stroll crowd. I really love this place. The food is good, the people are wonderful, and I like supporting a family business that clearly puts a lot of care into what they're doing. Definitely coming back soon. read more

I didn't know that this is owned by the same owners as Alif (see that in one of the other reviews!), but that kind of tracks. I stopped in for lunch w/ some friends, and I thought everything tasted great! I opted for an order of chicken tenders with fries, one of their featured specials, and I definitely couldn't tell that it was gluten-free, but it is! Looks like they use teff flour for their batter (it does have dairy, though, for those who can't have it). Not that sports stadium chicken fingers are the best kind, but the ones here definitely beat those. Admittedly, I don't often get chicken tenders, but I would get them again here. Some of my friends got the chicken sandwich, which looked to be essentially my meal but with a bun, and another got a falafel wrap, which also looked good. I would try either that or a chicken shawarma wrap in the future. You order at the counter, but if seated, they bring the food to you, which is nice. Not a huge amount of room inside, less than Alif, but enough for a few tables, and just about what I've come to expect in West Philly. My husband and I both had the chicken tenders and I can't even tell you how disappointing it was. I had to chew so hard on a few of the pieces that I didn't bother after a while. The seasoning did not give any international uniqueness and I honestly could not detect much salt nor pepper at all. It was just unfortunate. Still amazing fried chicken here! It's get the basic criteria of fried chicken right, having amazingly moist and marinated meat with a crispy delicate breading, but with such unique and delicious flavors. I've always loved the spicy flavor and how it perfectly evokes the flavor I love from Ethiopian food, but I had the lemon turmeric for the first time today and it absolutely holds its ground against the spicy with its bright pop! The mac and cheese was also incredible, with a golden baked top just as it should. Who knew a supposedly Ethiopian spot could also do that Southern side perfectly. I happened to come during Ramadan and they have a really good-value Ramadan special that comes with a three-piece chicken, mac and collard greens, a salad, and a side of rose pudding for $20. I had a great experience at Doro Bet and really appreciated that everything is cooked fresh to order--you can definitely taste the difference, especially in the crispness of the chicken. We tried a variety of dishes, but the Spicy Chicken was probably my favorite (7.5/10), even though I didn't find it all that spicy. The Collard Greens were excellent with a nice touch of sweetness (8/10), while the Mac & Cheese wasn't quite my style since it leaned a bit dry (6/10). So I had to try this viral fried chicken that's been all over the internet. Doro Bet is a woman-owned Ethiopian Chicken House located in the busy University City neighborhood in West Philly. It's a moderately sized take-out spot with an eat-in options. The tables are for parties of two (2). A bit crammed, but the space is easy to navigate. The sign on the entry door lets you know that the food may take up to 15 minutes to prepare while you wait. That was perfect for me because I wanted mine hot. I opted for the WHOLE chicken-which consisted of 6 pieces ( 2 thighs, 2 wings, and 2 drumsticks). I couldn't decide which sauce to get, so I got three. By the way, the sauce is not included with the chicken. Although they were only $.50 each, I think you should get a least 1 with your order. Nonetheless, I went with Mitmita Aioli, Hot Honey, and Garlic Aioli. The chicken was hot and very juicy (Not greasy). The thighs were crunchier than the drumsticks, and the tips of the wings were crunchy. I thought they were OK. If I had to rate them from 1-5, I'd give them a solid 3 because I thought it lacked the flavor I was looking for. The HOT HONEY was the best sauce to me because it had more flavor and a nice heat to it. It paired nicely with the chicken. Overall, it was very busy for an early afternoon. Many people called in their orders and were in and out picking up platters and such. They also had a Ramadan Package for $20 which included 1/2 fried chicken along with two sides and a salad. I finally got around to trying this place, and out of the three restaurants from the Ali family, this one has become one of my favorites. It's a small spot with a nice seating area, clean atmosphere, and the service is always efficient and quick. I've been here a few times now. My first experience was through Uber Eats. While I loved the crunchy texture and juiciness of the fried chicken, I found it lacking the signature spicy awaze seasoning, it could have used a bit more. However, the quality and texture of the chicken were so good that I decided to give it another try, and I'm glad I did! Since then, I've dined in a few times and tried several items, including the greens, falafel salad, Addis fries, doro wot, fried mushrooms and the amazing fried chicken. With recent orders I've found that the fried chicken is well seasoned, spicy but not overly so. It's tender, juicy, and perfectly crunchy. The fried mushrooms were a nice alternative, with great texture and crunch, but I probably wouldn't get them again as the chicken had more flavor. I was pleasantly surprised by the greens! Many Ethiopian restaurants don't season their greens much, but since this place blends Ethiopian and Black American cuisines, the greens here were packed with flavor, definitely a nice change. The falafel salad was fantastic for lunch, perfectly seasoned and so flavorful. Honestly, almost everything I've tried here has been really good! My daughter picked out Doro Bet as she was craving for African food. We drove to Cedar Park on a pleasant August Sunday. The Cedar Park area is a really cool and vibrant section of Philadelphia. We found parking right on Baltimore Ave. The restaurant's interior is very nice and extremely clean. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The chicken was moist on the inside. The Door Wot was also very good. A flavorful chicken stew with Ethiopian bread. The Biriz drink was interesting. It was made of Fermented Honey, Tumeric and water. At first it tasted a little odd, but it increasingly became more delicious. The Kerkede was also good and was Hibiscus tea with Cardamon. I got 2 Too Good To Gos here. Both appropriately priced. One of the containers was very similar to a TooGoodToGo I got from Alif Brew but Doro Bet has more entree options on the regular and the food looks to be prepared in a slightly higher quality to me. So they are priced reasonably at 4.99 per deal as Alif Brew is priced at 3.99 appropriately as well. Alif's injera (I had to look up what this spongy bread was) actually has more combination of things, and it is good too. Staff is friendly. The other container was creamy macaroni and chicken. I enjoyed this serving a lot. I have heard mixed things about this place from others- sometimes the containers are a good deal and sometimes not apparently. read more

The (hot) spice adverse kid didn't like the flavoring on the fries but the other gobbled it up. We loved the chicken sandwich. West philly has always had a good selection of African food. I decided to try Doro Bet after hearing wonderful things about their chicken wings. The sign in the window says how the chicken wings come out fresh (within 15 minutes). It might be worth it just to eat on site (as it might be a better experience). Sadly, we ordered this to go. The chicken wings were average in my opinion. It wasn't spicy but I did like the amount of breading they put on the chicken wings. I tried the Doro Wot which was basically a chicken strew that come with injera. I wasn't a big fan. The chicken was average but the injera wasn't my most favorite thing on the menu. I've never had injera before (so I am sorry to criticize) but it is like a fluffy bread that has the consistency and taste of a cardboard pancake. The best item hands down was the Shawarma Sandwich. Super friendly service and great ambiance with cool music. We tried a bunch of different things from the menu and it was all delicious! Very cool that a lot of the dishes are gluten free! We loved the fried chicken (regular and spicy), mac & cheese, fried mushrooms, and doro tibs. I'd recommend it all! Each dish was nice and flavorful. There is seating for 15-20. We arrived at 5:45pm on a Thursday. There were 2-3 people waiting for their takeout orders and no one sitting down. Doro Bet is a sister store of Salaam Cafe. I was really excited to try Doro Bet because it's zabiha/halal and I was really intrigued with the various fried chicken flavors. It's located in University City. Unfortunately, their delivery radius is not much and I ended up having to do pick-up. For the fried chicken, you can either get half chicken or whole chicken. Half chicken comes with a thigh, leg and wing. It's a bit misleading as one may expect to also have a breast tender thrown in. The Addis fries ARE A MUST TRY, very well seasoned! Ooooooof! We got half a chicken in the awaze flavor! We really liked it and you can smell the berbere spice incorporated. The lemon turmeric flavor was chosen for the second half a chicken- it's tart and not spicy at all! Super unique flavors, we preferred the awaze flavor. The main issue I had with the fried chicken is that it is way too much batter. In fact, some of it is not intact with the chicken meat itself. It reminded me of the first few times my mom and aunts tried to make fried chicken at home. I had to remove some of the crisps because it was overwhelming deep fried and burnt. We also got the Doro Wot which is a spicy chicken stew with Ayib cheese and hard boiled egg. It came with injera. There was only one itty piece of chicken- bit disappointing for an entree. I have been hearing about this place all the time and decided to try to order takeout for Father's day. While ever ranging from the service to athletic was excellent the food certainly stood out to me in the best way. I ordered the awaze fried chicken (spicy) and the berbere (mild) with their mac and cheese. Both chickens did lack spiciness but they did not lack flavor. The berbere was a subtly tangy and savory and the awaze (aka one of the greatest friend chickens I have ever had in philly) boasted an explosion of flavor that kinda left me in awe. Both chickens were incredibly juicy and super crispy which was shocking to me since i had ordered takeout. I hear they use a specific flour to make it extra crispy and i am inclined to believe it works lol . The only miss for me was their mac and cheese which lacked cheesiness (not sure if that was on purpose) and the lack of heat in the chicken. The restaurant has a fast casual setup. Orders are placed at the counter, and your name is called once your food is ready. The signature fried chicken they're known for is offered as a 3-piece half chicken or 6-piece whole chicken. I liked the simplicity of either the Aliche (mild lemon pepper) or Awaze (spicy Berbere) flavor options. Both are dry coatings on top of buttermilk fried chicken. I was with family, so we decided to order three whole chickens: two Awaze and one Aliche. We also ordered some Addis Fries. Our food was ready in about 20 minutes. I was impressed after only a few bites, which means a lot for someone as picky as I am about fried chicken. The breading had the perfect thickness. It stuck to the chicken very well, which you don't always get at other chicken spots. The dry coating was surprisingly very enjoyable. I'm not a huge lemon pepper fan, so I preferred the spicy coating over the mild. The Addis Fries were solid; crinkle fries don't usually do it for me, but the spice and crispness were spot on. Doro Bet provided a great experience overall. Their chicken taps into a specific niche that hasn't been done by other spots in Philly.
