This summer I want my kids to try food from around the world so our first stop was Fat Tummy empanadas to try artisanal Argentinian empanadas. The dough and fillings are made from scratch everyday with savory choices like spicy chicken, traditional beef, or sweet options like pumpkin and guava. There are also vegetarian options called humita made of sweet corn and peppers or chili poblano with cheese. There is also Argentinian helado. I tried the dulce de leche while waiting and it was creamy rich heaven. I can't believe I haven't left a review yet, I've been dropping in for years and it's a big recc to all the homies. The owners are sweeties, the menu is Guy Fieri approved, and I've never had a disappointing meal. I've tried the majority of their savory empanadas by now and the ham and cheese one is so underrated, I didn't grow up eating empanadas but the gooey melty of it just feels so nostalgic. You can pick these up to dine in or take out or you can request frozen and they'll send you home with oven and air fryer instructions, like feed me now and feed me later off a single trip. Do not miss out on their chimmichuri, either. The spicy adds an excellent kick to every one I've tried it with but I've bought jars of the mild to throw on different dishes at home, there's a great zest I can't quite place or replicate and it keeps me coming back for sure. Also make sure to account for the fact that Commerce St is a one way street. A converted house, you walk up and place your order at the counter; seating is off to the right. This spot is family run and the staff is all very warm and accommodating. I ordered the traditional beef (C-1) and the pepperoni & cheese empanadas (PQ) with a dessert empanada of guava and cream cheese. "Only two?" I'm sure you're thinking. Trust me, these empanadas are pretty filling and two is a good amount. Three is ambitious and reserved for big eaters LOL While you wait for your food, take a look at the pin board! People from all over the world have come to this restaurant to try their food; I'm sure their nod from Guy Fieri helps with that. Each empanada comes with the restaurant name on the crust as well as lettering to indicate the filling, hence the C-1 and PQ I noted before. The PQ was yummy and exactly as expected. I was definitely craving a calzone if you'll pardon the comparison! The C-1 was tasty, but I'm not a big fan of olives which are diced throughout the beef. I should have been aware of that, it being the traditional empanada, so I'll try a different one next time. The sweet empanada was delicious! A sugar crust on the outside, make sure you don't burn your mouth on the gooey insides! I ordered some empanadas to go for my wife and they have fully cooked or partially cooked options. I mainly taste the cheese and corn. I'm not sure if the Chile poblano flavor was that strong, but I also don't usually eat poblanos. We also ordered the spicy beef and beef + potatoes. Man, these beef expands were piping hot!! But we still ate them anyways and burned the roof of our mouth. The temperature and flavor of the beef expands were both hot, so I couldn't really taste much. The empanadas are fuller and served fresh to order and are far superior to the ones served at the now defunct Beto's. They have a lot of flavors to select from.
