They are consistently friendly and gracious. Recently, I brought a family member in with a wide range of food allergies and they actually have their own menu breakdown so folks with allergies can easily make decisions without having to keep asking staff questions. They also went so far out of their way to accommodate my sister-in-law's air born allergies without making us feel different or high maintenance. I was craving some barbecue and since I grew up for a little bit in Texas I'm very picky about certain things...like brisket. I was told this place was really good but was very hesitant when I walked in because it was quite different from the barbecue spots that I'm used to. I'm used to the type of places where you walk in and it's basically just a grill and a shack and people are cooking and once the food is gone it's gone for the day. However, this place was very different when you walk in. It looks very, very nice on the inside and they have a full bar with a selection of beers on their menu as well. Once I looked at the menu though I realized this was the real deal for barbecue. I ended up getting a platter with the smoked pulled pork that comes with a cornbread muffin, a side (I ended up getting baked beans), coleslaw and pickles. They have four different barbecue sauces at the table: the first one was Kansas City which is pretty mild, Texas which has a little bit of a kick to it, hot- which I didn't even try because I don't like spicy food, and Carolina which if you're familiar with North Carolina they use a vinegar base instead of an actual sauce for their barbecue. For a side we ended up getting the burnt ends which are the burnt ends of the brisket and it comes with a piece of Texas toast under the burnt ends. The sauce on the burnt ends is the mild Kansas City sauce. The flavor on the bird ends is really good and the brisket was perfect leaving Texas for so long you get really picky about whether a place can make brisket or not very well and this place definitely cuts the cake for that one. The smoked pork was really good and because I couldn't choose between the sauces I ended up using the Kansas City mild and the Carolina Sauce. Let me just say that both sauces were perfect on the smoked pulled pork but Carolina was pretty tangy but it had a different type of flavor than what I normally accustomed. It went really well with the pork and it made me remember when I would get pulled pork when I lived in North Carolina. The Kansas City sauce was also really good. It's definitely mild but has a sweet taste which is just what I like when I have any type of barbecue sauce on my meat. The service was really great. Our server was very friendly and actually helped us try to figure out what we might like on the menu because we were being very indecisive. He also was great at having a sense of humor with us and how it was hard for me to eat barbecue with one arm down due to my surgery. This isn't the barbecue spot you would come to if you're just expecting to grab a platter and walk out the door in your jeans and flip-flops type of thing. This is a place where you'd bring out of town guests if you want them to try barbecue but have a little bit more of an upscale experience. I will be upfront and say I'm used to good, southern BBQ and am hard to please with this cuisine. That being said, our family has tried Double B's a few times. The first, we weren't entirely pleased with the ribs or brisket bc they weren't as "fall apart" as we like. We did want to give it another shot, though, and I am glad we did! The meat is all seasoned very well, which can be hard to find in the area. We have tried the spare ribs, baby back ribs, pulled ham, pulled pork, burnt ends, and chicken. They are very flavorful and pretty juicy, and the sauces are good, solid choices. The only meat we didn't care for was the baby back ribs which just aren't our favorite style. The sides we have tried have been good as well, and the pie is great! We have had good service here. The restaurant has a "nice casual" feel with lots of greenery and nice decor, which I appreciated. Never been here on a Wednesday before, so did not know about the Smoked Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf! Wow! If you want to try it, make sure you come hungry because it is a lot of food! I was in town for the Braves and Brewers game and our waitress told us they were catering for the Atlanta Braves that day! I ordered the meat and meat platter. I chose brisket and had the back back ribs recommended to me. The ribs were superb! They were tender, tasty, and easy to chew! The brisket was really good too. It was in-between being fatty and moist. My friend let me sample the kielbasa. I'm from Alabama so I'm still learning the various types of sausage. I enjoyed it and it went extremely well with the Carolina mustard. Speaking of sauces, there are 4: Carolina Mustard, KC mild (sweet), Texas Bold (mild but tangy), and Picante. The Picante had a bite to it but as I enjoy sauces with a medium heat, this was in-between mild and medium. The mac and cheese was the best side I had. It had 7 cheeses and the corkscrew noodles. The cornbread was sweet and rich. It seems like Double B insists on including slaw with every plate. I like slaw but I did not like their slaw. It was too dry for me and had a hint of celery that I hate. Surprise, surprise! They had fresh brew sweet tea! And in the no-man's fresh-brewed sweet tea land known as the Midwest, it sure was good! Walk into the smokey smell of BBQ! Cute decor throughout this neat restaurant. Jenn, our server was great! She was attentive and explained the menu and options well, as this was our first visit. The smoked bacon balls were delicious meatballs wrapped in bacon. They came with Thai chili sauce and blue cheese to dip. The baby back ribs were flavorful, even without adding sauce (the true test). The brisket was good. it could have been a bit more tender and juicy. We loved the coleslaw, just the right amount of sweet. The raisin bread pudding dessert is also a must try! Double B's was an interesting BBQ spot. I will get straight to the point. I got a burnt ends sandwich from here and was pretty excited but personally I felt like there was way too much smoke flavor on the brisket. Not sure what wood they are using or how they smoked the brisket but the smoke flavor was very very over powering and it took away from the sandwich. I could not finish it. Fries were fine and the corn muffins were ok but I was really looking forward to the brisket sandwich. Staff were friendly and the restaurant looked cool but I got to go so didn't see the whole place. I think for now I am semi disappointed in this restaurant, but really want to try more of their food to see if it is the same across the board. We've been before and really liked it. But this time we went because it was featured in our Old Fashioned passport. Usually we just stop for drinks from the passport places but we couldn't not have dinner here too. It's too good. We went at primetime on a Friday and did have a decent wait (30+) but we did also see a lot of to go orders going out so that is an option if you're not looking for drinks. But the drinks were fabulous. And every bite of food was delicious. And the service was spot on ever being very busy. We got dessert to go so I didn't get a photo but the PB pie is delicious too! Negative: the BBQ is so increadibly boring, uninspiring, it's a bit sad that most people won't ever know truly epic BBQ. A bit on the dry side -- except for the roasted chicken! that was deliciously moist! -- too heavy with rub. Corn bread is dense and chewy. The mac&cheese just meh. The Carolina sauce is delish, but the others are annoyingly thick and flavor is just okay. Having lived in Texas for years, I admit my bar for BBQ might be unrealistically high here in Wisconsin - but I can't untaste perfection. I read an article saying that they had won some award and decided to try them out. The place was smaller than I expected, but they fit a lot of people in comfortably. It also had much more upscale decorating than your average BBQ place. Went for dinner with family and started off with an excellent Smoked Manhattan and starters of smoked bacon balls (meatballs wrapped in bacon) and burnt ends; both were delicious. I ordered the 2 meat platter of brisket and 1/2 rack of St. Louis style ribs with a small corn bread muffin and side of maple squash with nuts. The ribs were lean and delicious, and the brisket was lean and tender. Also loved the muffin and squash. My dinner partners had smoked half chicken (very juicy) full rack of ribs and a bean burger. Everyone was very pleased and we needed a couple of boxes for the left overs, so there was plenty of food. The server was very pleasant and friendly and the service was timely. My favorite was the smoked Manhattan! I need to come back just to get this again. They have a vast barbecue menu, including appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and plates. We went to Double B's last Saturday night after getting two recommendations from local West Allis residents. I ordered the full rack of spareribs, and my adult daughter ordered the full rack of baby back ribs. Both seemed to be very overcooked, I would say burnt, with the crust hard to a fork and knife which made them really hard to chew. There didn't seem to be any seasoning on the surface of either ribs. Adding the sauce didn't make any difference to the taste but I didn't expect it to. I have had good ribs in multiple places both in the Milwaukee area and well as in other states and these were not good by any means.
