The speakeasy is located under a theater and if you don't know where the front door is, then you will totally miss it. The bar area is nice and cozy and the lounge area for live music. It's great to sit in and enjoy the ambience. The drinks we had were just OK. The bartender that was waiting on us was not very helpful. I asked for a couple recommendations and she didn't have much to say other than she didn't like any of those and she liked red wine. That was really offputting and not helpful at all even if that's true she could have been more helpful to try and tell me what drinks she would suggest or what is most popular. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. First of all, it was described as having multiple rooms. It does not. There is an area with a bar and some booths and then an open doorway to another room with tables and a stage. That's it. When we sat down at the bar, my husband started to ask the bartender if he knew anything about a Praline Old Fashioned because he had it somewhere else and loved it. The bartender cut him off rudely and gave him an attitude saying he had no idea. So he just ordered a regular old fashioned. The bartender basically slammed it down on the bat in front of him, a foot away from the napkin he had previously put down in front of it. It was served over regular ice. I'm sorry but for the prices they are charging, they should have specialty ice balls or cubes for and Old Fashioned. I ordered an espresso martini which was AWFUL. There was a live jazz singer (female) who was AWFUL. We left after one drink. We would NOT recommend this place and won't return. read more

I went to Double Dealer below the Orpheum Theater and the vibe is unreal. The live music made the whole night. They had a guitarist and a bass player and the mix was perfect. The drinks were amazing and the service kept the night smooth. I booked one of the privacy booths and it's honestly the best part. It gives you enough space and confidentiality to kiss in peace without feeling like the whole room is watching. The vibe in this place is unmatched. Even the door to the performance area is this giant mirror looking piece that makes the whole place feel extra theatrical. I can't wait to go back and I'm definitely bringing friends next time. I have been hearing of this place for 2 years . A coworker said ,you know there is an underground bar in New Orleans and I was thinking no way the way it floods here. Lol. Who would think it's under the Orpheum. I Finally made it here and fell in love from the speakeasy vibes,the vintage burlesque outfits surrounding the space. It felt like a very intimate setting. The bar was nice and bartender was friendly . I had a delicious mojito. We were there right at 7 so no other guest had arrived. We met some friends later and they enjoyed their drinks as well. We (two of us)walked up to a line. We waited without issue. When we got to the front of the line, the doorman asked if we were two parties of two. We said, "no, one party of two." He was annoyed with our correction and told us good night. We peacefully left and were standing outside trying to comprehend why he was a dick. We were not drunk, loud or inappropriate. He came out to the street while we were still there talking about where we should go. He said, "are you ready to come in? There are over 100 people in there." Excellent ambiance in a hidden speakeasy format under the Orpheum Theatre, across the street from the historic Roosevelt Hotel. We stopped in right at dusk on an August Friday evening for a drink before dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our craft cocktails in the dramatic surrounds. We sat at the bar to watch the bartenders do their work, but there were also several other types of seating available including private booths with heavy velvet curtains. A stage in the front offered many 2-and 4-top cocktail tables with waiter service, too. Our bartender wasn't exactly friendly, but he made a fine drink. I randomly saw a sign with the Double Dealer logo as we walked out of the Roosevelt hotel, and decided to duck in. The bar in under the Orpheum theatre, and we ended up having such a good time we came back the next night! The bar had live music and both nights were female singers, and both singers were incredible. The bar is nice and has plenty of seating, both in the area with the performers and in the bar area. They have vintage burlesque outfits hanging around the space and as a costume designer, I loved seeing them. You order at the bar, and we ended up just sitting up there, and the service was quick and great. They have a classic cocktail menu and some housemade cocktails, and we had some of both. The cocktails were delicious and very decently priced, with 3 drinks being less than $50 before tip. I'd definitely suggest anyone who appreciates a good cocktail or theatre history visit here. read more

Wow!! So when I found out that we have a speakeasy in New Orleans I HAD to go and I'm so glad I did. We walked up to a really inconspicuous entry door. There was a guy at a booth guarding the entry. He asked if we had reservations I said yes and gave the name. He checked the list and opened the velvet rope. He told us to walk downstairs and he would meet us. We walked down these stairs that looked like a really sketchy basement and followed him. When we got inside the bar I was amazed. It was really nice. He directed us to a private seating area where we had a 2 person booth. On one side was a wall that had a window you could open to receive drink service. The bartenders can't see inside but you can see outside. There's also heavy dark curtains you can close to make your booth completely private. To order a drink you press a button and a waiter promptly arrives to take your order. I ordered the side car. And it was really well made. I really liked it. For my 2nd drink I ordered a drink called LOOKING AT THE MOON AND THINKING OF ONE FAR AWAY it had Pomegranate syrup, sparkling wine, lemon juice, Chambord. That was also really good. There was also a burlesque dancer that went around entertaining all of the patrons. That was a pretty cool touch to the whole experience. Went with a few friends post show around the corner and it was worth the extra effort to get back. Cocktail menu was great although pricing a bit high for Nola. The person admitting at the door was so lovely! When you fist walk in, you'll need to go down a hallway to reach the bar. We sat at the bar and I had such an incredible mocktail, shout-out to the bartender. The only reason why I'm giving this place 4 out of 5 stars is because we did overhear a different bartender being rude to a customer - the customer asked for water and the bartender responded by saying that he was there to make drinks and didn't have time to give them water. This place is a hidden gem-truly! The entrance is across from the Roosevelt on Roosevelt way, an inconspicuous dark unmarked door right next to an open parking lot. Downstairs in the basement is a gorgeous speakeasy style lounge with beautiful bar and decorated with antique burlesque outfits on display. They also have live music some evenings. The drinks are awesome. Last night we got the Ultimately (a delicious fresh cucumber cocktail), Desert noon (a fresh take on a cross between a margarita and a mule), against the grain (a bit too sweet for my taste), hat of destiny (semi sweet bourbon drink that my husband enjoyed but said was less complex than an Old fashioned) We love this place and tend to forget about it but always have a great time and will definitely be back! read more

I love speakeasy's. This place did not disappoint. Located under the Orpheum Theatre in New Orleans. There was a live, traveling singing duo, who were really great! I could have stayed all night, but was only in town for a few days and wanted to explore as much as I could. That being said, music playing behind closed doors, during prohibition, is a dead giveaway that shenanigans are afoot! Lol. The drinks can be a hit and miss. The classic daiquiri had a little too much lime for my taste. Great place and no reservation is currently needed. Would go again. This. Is. The. Absolutely. Best. Bar. In the city! I'm almost a little conflicted to review this place because I don't want a bunch of people to find out about it lol. Everything about this bar is cool. Firstly, you walk up to this door without any signage on it whatsoever, and there was a guy (bouncer-like) standing behind a velvet rope. We take a creepy stairwell downstairs and go through a door that reveals a real life speakeasy! We were seated in a booth behind the bar that had curtains for privacy and a double sided mirror. Ordering cocktails were done by pushing a button and a red light illuminates until a waitress arrives. The atmosphere was everything! From the music to the aroma in the place down to the burlesque-esque dancers. The cocktails were amazing! You can tell a mixologist made the drinks and not a normal bartender. The ratio of alcohol to other ingredients were made with surgical precision. I can't get enough of this place I have to go back again really soon! This is a true local hidden gem! read more

Deep below the streets of New Orleans, the city's newest bar is hidden. Double Dealer, an homage to the speakeasy type of bar of the Prohibition Era, is tucked under the famed Orpheum Theater at 129 Roosevelt Way. Here you will find a different kind of drinking and socialization experience. Named after a New Orleans literary journal from the 1920s, Double Dealer keeps a respect for history, while creating a social space for the modern era. Walking down the stairs and down the long ramp to the bar itself, you first think you might be in the wrong place. Once your trust your instincts, you are greeted with the wall of "house rules" reminding performers to return house props and costumes, and to raise a toast to Barry, the ghost said to haunt this space. Upon entering the place itself, you're welcomed with warm lighting and colors. The gorgeous bar is a nod to the art-deco period and a waitress brings you drink menus as soon as you sit down. On either side of the bar are "snugs"- booths where patrons can sit and drink, unbothered, away from the fray of the crowd. The velvet curtains, which can be pulled for more privacy, are actually repurposed vintage stage curtains, adding a touch of authenticity, as well as a nod of respect to the theater above. When in the snugs, a switch can be flipped that illuminates a red light, indicating to the bartender that you're ready for another round. The cocktails at Double Dealer are in a class by themselves. I was fortunate enough to sample a few and one of my favorites was Cables of Cobweb, a refreshing rum cocktail that was crisp and subtle. Another drink I found to be delicious was Blind Viking; made with Mezcal, Aperol, sweet vermouth and bitters, it had a smoky after taste and just enough bite. If classic cocktails are more your thing, Double Dealer offers tasty favorites such as the Old Fashioned, the Sidecar and the old standby the Daiquiri. Drinks are wonderfully priced and no cocktail is more than $12. Considering how well-crafted these drinks are (and how easily they go down), that's quite the steal! If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. The ambiance is chill and the music is always good, but the staff is undesirable. I have chosen this location for my birthday for the past three years, bringing in a group of at least 20 people. I had a cake with me and was told we are not allowed to have food in there, which isn't stated on the website, but if we called, we could have had it in this room off to the side. I asked if we could go in that room since it was empty and was told no because we didn't call. I'm not rehashing everything and if something is a policy, I respect that, but the "manager" was extremely rude and literally told one of my friends he didn't care if we were upset and he didn't need our business. Instead of going here, I highly suggest walking across the street to the Roosevelt Bar. read more
