This is the perfect hidden spot to escape the heat and crowds of Nola in the summer! My partner and I visited right when it opened, so it was not crowded at all, and the bartender quickly served us our drinks (which were delicious and refreshing!). We've been here twice on haunted tours in New Orleans. It definitely has a spooky vibe to it. It's a neat spot, although each time we've been it's been kind of quiet and I'm not sure why.. This was the bar connected to my hotel and I knew about its history so I wanted to visit. It was a really cute place and nicely decorated. It was also bigger than I thought it would be and has a piano for live music. I just got one drink and it was big and strong. I sat at the bar and sipped my drink. The bartender was fine. There was a couple in the bar that asked about the history of the place and even though the bartender had been there for a long time, she didn't really share much which was kind of disappointing. read more

On a recent trip to New Orleans we ended our haunted pub tour at this location. The entrance is off to the side so if we had not visited on the tour we may have missed it. The inside is very clean, open and looks newly renovated. There was plenty of space in the back for our large group. The menu had lots of delicious speciality drinks that were delicious. Just underwent a large renovation. Tasteful, attractive inside. Nice, cordial bartenders. Very small cocktail list, maybe five or so drinks? With some wine and beer as well. I tried a couple of the light liquor drinks based in gin and vodka. Both light and easy to drink. Small, low lights, not crowded, intimate. Very easy access if you're staying in the hotel. Main reason I didn't rate higher is secondary to the very small drink list, which hasn't changed, best I can tell, since last year when we were here. read more

Went here a few years ago and revisited tonight on a haunted history tour. I remembered it being Smokey and grungy. Tonight it was clean and you could see everything clearly. Might be because I was sober so you may want to have a couple drinks and show up later for the darker vibe. We sat outside in the courtyard smoking area and ended up having a really great time chatting about nostalgia like cassettes and pagers. The crowd matters. I had the absolute worst experience at this bar. It's Christmas Eve and I've had the absolute best time in Nola and this bartender just came really close to ruining everything. We're staying at the Dauphine and we love this hotel and the free drinks they give us when we stay here. We loved May Baileys and her badass history. We came to end the night here with our drink tickets and had no idea this clown would be bartending. First of all he was phenomenally rude to us. It became clear he was shit housed when he started swearing like a sailor (if you know me u know I have a completely filthy mouth but there is a time and place). He was taking shots and finally broke a whole ass bottle screaming MOTHERF***ER! Then these two guys came in and he started talking to them about religion and was joking about how one of them was Jewish and Mormon. He was making fun of the guy and then they started talking about religion. He told these guys that if you believe in god ur an asshole and started saying that he has scientifically proven that god doesn't exist and that dinosaurs came from his asshole. He called the guys pu**ys for believing in god and said other horrendous stuff. He was swearing and screaming so much that my husband and I had to leave. By this time the bar was completely dead other than the two guys redeeming their drink tickets and I get why. All beliefs aside the way this bartender was shouting at these patrons was wild and jaw droppingly disrespectful. He was white, long blonde hair in a ponytail and had glasses and even though IM Jewish I pray this Christmas that this total doucebag gets sacked and learns some respect and humility. Update: we complained about douchey bartender and the management super generously took a statement from us and assured us that this guy would be dealt with appropriately. We can't wait to come back and see how charming may baileys is without a lunatic bartender! read more

I just want to say WOW. I LOVE this place. Jennifer was our bartender both nights we were in and not only was she super knowledgeable with the drinks- she talked about the bar and was just so very sweet. She let us stay after close while she cleaned up (We are staying at the Dauphine next door) and was so accommodating. She even gave us a bottle of champagne to enjoy at midnight because it is our anniversary. I have never had such a wonderful experience at a bar. So the license actually hangs on the wall from 1857 when May Baily had a license essentially to have a Brothel as a business!! You would never know the place is there if you are not a local or staying nearby. It is like a step back in time and part of the attraction is the history. It remains in the same structure but has a blend of some of the history with some very modern furnishings... very eclectic! The bar is lovely and the bartender very friendly and the drinks we had were made to perfection. It was late night and not terribly busy we stopped in with friends and it is indeed a lovely way to wind down an evening... I could also see starting an evening here or just stopping in for drinks anytime really. There was no live music etc and I don't know if they even do that or have the need?? Got a couple free drinks here from the Dauphin :) I'm 4 months preggo and they made me a mint lemonade. He got a ginger ale. It was a dead on a Friday night at 8PM, except for the drunk hotel patrons by the pool. The bartender was super nice and friendly and never lost a beat. This is a solid, slightly disheveled hotel bar. It makes a good cocktail and the prices are reasonable, unusual for a FQ hotel bar. The ambiance is a mix of early 20th century brothel (which is their shtick) and weird 1970s era disco mirrors. I would definitely go back here again. This lounge may be a well-kept secret in the French Quarter, but some of the local service industry folks are onto it for sure. One of the best hotel bars I've been in. Generally busy, but even when it's not, it has a lot of charm. The bartenders can be somewhat persnickety, but if you can get past the prickly exterior, they're really quite good. Late September 2015 We stayed at the Dauphine, the hotel that contains May Bailey's. Hotel guests get free drink tickets and this is a VERY nice touch. Great room, very "William Morris" wallpaper and carpet, wood panelling/bar, mirrored ceiling. MB's was a high-end, um, House of Fancy Ladies back in the day. The walls have write-ups about the ladies, along with a copy of the original business license from the city. The bartenders (ladies, both visits) were super friendly and made a truly excellent Pimm's Cup (my new Thing, delicious). Great music playing from NO radio 90.7. I can always do without a TV, but they have one if you need it. MBP is a very cool part of the Dauphine...go visit. read more

Reminds me of a classy New York bar which makes me feel at home. Its a refreshing change of the fish bowl and hurricane joints. Its more sophisticated and relaxing. The specialty cocktails were all delicious. Its a little tricky to find. You have to go through the hotel entrance past the pool and into the door to the left. Im not sure if thats always the entrance since part of the place was closed down since it was a Monday. This place is good for calmer nights. read more
