Double Great is my favorite coffee shop in Portland. The coffee is incredible, last time i was in they were using Sweet Bloom Beans out of Denver, a fantastic choice. the store goes after a 90s vibe by not offering wifi and encouraging face to face encounters. it works, people are chatting and it's great. lastly, they are a NO TIPPING shop, stating that they pay their employees well enough and actually know how to run a business. this is a big green flag for me. read more

A very nice place. Love the no tip policy here, how rare is that nowadays. Lovely atmosphere, has a kids corner with kids toy and books. Excellent coffee, loved the breakfast sandwich too. Definitely recommend this place! read more

I have stopped into Double Great Coffee a handful of times before making my way into the office. It's very convenient that they open at 6:30! They are a "no-tip" establishment and I'm here for that. And they get bakery items from Standard Baking Co. (also big-time here for that)! I had always seen an extravagent breakfast sandwich on their menu that was priced at like $13, and so I had avoided it. The other day, they were advertising a simpler, lower priced, meat, egg & cheese breakfast sandwich option. It was good, nothing amazing (but I enjoyed the convenience and price point being relatively lower). read more

I love the vibe here. It's a warm cozy sort of place. Lots of wood. Baristas are paid a bit more, so you don't have to tip - very neat system. And the place was buzzing with clients the day I came. It's a love hate relationship with this place. No matter how much time I give myself, the timeliness is lacking. I wish they would do better with time. They are very consumed with conversations that they forget others have been waiting for their drinks for an unreasonable amount of time. Not everyone stays and orders in. Others need it to go. I wish they were more considerate of the to go orders versus the "here" orders. It is nice that they try to connect with people I'll give them that but when they are spending a long time holding up lines and orders talking to certain people it truly makes it a bad experience. The quality is good but is it worth it if they are not considerate of their environment? Idk. I don't think so. My business unfortunately will be going somewhere else. read more

Parking: street parking reliably available either adjacent or in the neighborhood next to it Food: have not yet had but they have a weekend special breakfast sandwich that sells out Atmosphere: this is probably the best thing. Double Great... has 1995 vibes, is a tip-free establishment ("baristas are paid a higher wage and prices reflect this choice, thank you for caring"), doesn't have wifi (talk to each other! or, okay, use your hotspot, they don't mind!), offers seasonal house made syrups, does NOT upcharge for oat milk, offers those little signs you can put on your table that say "you can sit with me, I'm chill!" (which you'll appreciate when they're super busy... which they get, trust me), offers coffee for $4.50 to $5.50 and lattes for $7.50 to $850, is literally one of the best coffee shops to happen in the Greater Portland area in a long time. I wish they'd serve local coffee (they're using Passenger Coffee from PA and Verve from CA), but: + The space: it's compact, but they've done a great job creating seating everywhere they can. Loads of natural light floods in from the enormous windows. It's a very modern, minimalist vibe. + The staff: SO friendly. Everyone here is welcomed, and the thoughtful little touches of calling out your name when your drink is ready *and also* taking the time to chat with you as they hand it over just feels like a real, genuine interaction. + The drinks: the hot coffee is good AND the iced French Toast latte (made with espresso, maple, vanilla, and cinnamon) is amazing (though I'd suggest getting it with an extra shot if you like a more coffee forward drink). Had the French toast latte, it was amazing. We were staying at the AC Marriott on the water. It was a 15 minute walk uphill, which was a little tough but worth the delicious drink in the end. There were a couple other coffee shops on the walk back downhill toward the hotel that we stopped at. read more

A cute corner downtown coffee shop vibe. This place has lots of seating but is small so there may be room or not just depending on the time of day. I got a chai which was a mix, so if you aren't into mixes this might not be your spot. The latte was a very yummy flavor that wasn't too strong and creamy. I've been stopping by Double Great a lot since I wrote my first review, and it's become one of my favorites! Often I'm just after a regular latte, hot or iced, but I'm loving their seasonal rotation of special drinks, too: things like a latte with cacao and chili spice, or a drizzle of maple syrup. Nothing is ever too sweet and it's obvious you're getting top-notch ingredients. This place has become super popular, too, which is terrific! In the summer it was a perfect place to snag a table outside; now, in the cold season, it's cheery and snug inside, and the staff just had a nice holiday party as sort of a thank-you for their customers; how lovely is that? read more

Had to kill time before going to the Portland Observatory. Service was excellent and the staff was friendly. The chocolate croissant was excellent , rich and flaky. My tea was served in an actual cup. A small but cozy place. It was a local place with wifi and a cool vibe. read more

Very cute coffee shop with cozy feeling and good amount of indoor seating. Ordered an iced maple oatmilk latte and service was prompt. Latte and espresso was delicious and smooth but unfortunately the maple flavoring was not added to my latte. Since I was doing takeout I unfortunately did not discover this mistake until I was already at work and was unable to ask for a correction or refund for the up charge. A wonderful and cozy neighborhood coffee shop. It's always bustling in here! The service is incredibly warm and the coffee and beverages are delicious. This is a perfect spot to hunker down and do some work (though note that there isn't wifi!) or read a good book. There's a decent amount of table seating, as well as some bar seating, but it does get crowded in the mornings and on some weekends. There's also a no-tipping policy, which is nice, since the prices are on the higher side (~$7-8/drink). Last time, I ordered the spiced cacao, which is on their wellness menu. It was absolutely delicious: spiced and warming and calming, like a lighter, less sugary hot chocolate. I can't wait to be back! read more

Stumbled upon this place while searching for a new coffee shop to do some work. I really haven't been around this area in Portland but I've noticed there's a couple cool spots. This coffee shop was great with their lattes. It wasn't too much mocha for me. There's a couple of seatings and bar spots to do some work. This was also my first "no-tip" establishment which was very neat. One downside is that there's no WiFi. Good things I had my own hotspot. I'll be back if I want to catch up with a friend. read more

After missing out on making it here opening day due to the snow storm we were having, we finally made it. Hard to pass up the opportunity to check out a newly opened coffee shop. Taking over the spot that formerly was Hilltop Coffee. Clearly we were not alone as every seat was taken along with quite a large group of us waiting/standing for our coffee. The line moved quickly but took a little while to get our coffee but understandable considering they are newly opened and only three people working behind the counter in a tiny space. One taking orders and the other two making drinks. They have stool seating looking out the window (maybe some good people watching or a good spot to drink and get some work done) along with some table style seats too. At the current time their menu is quite basic besides their Wellness Lattes that stood out to me. But even their basic/normal options sound good as well especially if you go with maple flavored. Not sure if they will eventually expand or do seasonal specials. I did end up getting their Maca Cardamom Coffee Iced Latte, it was different but good. Be forewarned it does have a touch of grittiness to it that some may not like in a beverage. My fiancée got their Iced Chai Latte and was very impressed, one of the better chais in awhile. We will want to return sometime to enjoy our drinks in house in the future when it's not as busy. Also if you want a bite to go along with your beverage of choice they have pastry offerings from fellow Portland business The Ugly Duckling. The only few small bits of criticism would be I wish their drinks could come in bigger sizes and they need better signage out front. As well along those some lines, get some logo branding on your cups just to do some boost in marketing for yourselves when people walk around with your drinks. Parking could be an issue depending on time and day you try coming here if you aren't close enough to walk as well but not an issue to walk. Otherwise great addition to the local coffee scene and look forward to returning. read more

I'll start with the positives. It's really nice to avoid the tipping situation and I am OK with paying the extra cost -- I think of it as part of the Munjoy Hill tax. The ambience is where this place really shines -- lots of natural light, people watching opportunity, and the baristas are exceptionally decent people. I believe they offer no wifi specifically to deter people who like to selfishly camp out and occupy precious real estate in a small, community-minded coffee shop. Nonetheless, people continue to use DGC as their work-from-home locale, hogging the limited table space, and at times even taking ZOOM CALLS inside and absolutely obliterating law and order. As for the drinks, I have had very good lattes and coffee, a disappointing matcha, and a just OK chai. The matcha was insanely weak, essentially just milk flavored. The chai was similarly much too diluted for my taste. At $7, I expect more. read more

I'm writing this review mostly so that people don't make the same mistake I did... BEAUTIFUL coffee shop with some really unique drinks. I got a wellness drink known as "Blue Skies" which was absolutely delicious. I came in on a Wednesday mid-day, and the shop was quiet and spacious. I loved the atmosphere and they had delicious drinks made with care. The only problem is I came with the intention to enjoy the space and get my work done only to find out that they have no wifi network. I know this store is relatively new, but I'm hoping they do get wifi because it is the perfect space to sit and get work done. Even today as I'm trying to decide where to go to do my grad school work, I want to come here but it's unfortunately inaccessible! My hope is they get wifi soon, so I can rave about this place to others, because it truly was a cute, quiet, hidden gem space. read more

Possibly the most delicious vanilla oat milk latte I've ever had. Super smooth flavor, not too hot to enjoy immediately. A little more expensive than most places but then I read their sign that they pay their baristas fair wages and therefore don't accept tips and charge a wee bit more for coffees. Happy to pay the premium price for a shop that has principles! read more

Absolutely in love with Double Great Coffee! The staff is beyond friendly, quiet and comfortable seating area, and (most importantly) delicious coffee and pastries. This spot is lovely! Great service and good tasting coffee and lattes. It's a bit tight and can get very busy, but that's pretty par for coffee shops. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it is on the more expensive side. That being said, they have a note at the counter that says they do not accept tips because they pay their staff a livable wage, which is nice to see! read more

Of note: the Pastrami sandwich my husband ordered was AMAZING. One of the top ones he's had and he orders them everywhere. The pastrami was hot and fresh and the rye was perfectly toasted. After having some of the bread prior to our meals at a few restaurants, we found out the bread is locally sourced at a sister business right around the corner from where ate the night before. There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find!

I soon discovered that they had a second location here, and told myself if I was ever in the area again I would step in. During this most recent Maine trip, I was making a few last minute stops before heading home, and thought this was as great opportunity to check little Tandem out and get some plural peps. Right from the jump, I noticed the vibe at Tandem Roasters was different. The big Tandem on Congress is large, usually always has a line, and has a large selection of food in addition to the coffee. This Tandem is smaller and more chill - the main floor has some seating around the perimeter, with a smaller room off to the side with more seating. In addition to their merch, they have a decent selection of vinyls to browse. The vibe is overall more chill here - I had time to browse and soak in the aesthetics, whereas you're kinda shuffled down the line at the larger Tandem due to the crowds. The menu is mostly coffee and related beverages; they have a small selection of bakes but it's not nearly as large as their other location. I had already had breakfast, so I decided just to go with a cappuccino. The beverage was good - everything you want out of a cappuccino. Service was also good, I was taken care of promptly and my beverage was ready relatively quickly. Overall, I'm glad I finally got to check this Tandem out. It's a little off the beaten path of the main commercial hub of Portland, however there are a few businesses in the area so it's worth checking out if you're in the area.

I was a little hesitant given some of the earlier reviews; it looked like they were still figuring things out when they first opened. But a few months in, the place feels calm and settled. It was almost empty on a recent Monday and everything seemed to be running smoothly.
