Doug's Bugs performed a Pest Control Inspection of my house for a potential Buyer, and after reporting on issues beyond their purview (i.e. structural integrity), and before a written report was provided, offered an outlandish verbal estimate to Buyer of 60k-- causing Buyers to instantly cancel their contract. When the written report was issued the next day, the estimate had come down to 47k, cited several examples of rot on siding with no pics and this item alone was 27k. Apparently alot of these companies use some special agent that only they can certify the proper application of hence the inflated price. I know every inch of my house and while I've detected a few patches that needed to be cleaned out and protected with anti-fungal paste when the weather improved, it was inexcusable to assess such an outrageous fee. Their report now becomes embedded in my disclosure packet and will further harm my ability to sell. I have hired my own pest control and general inspection company, both of which I've been told are very objective and professional, and who actually provide photos, to come next week. Hopefully their reports can reduce the damage done by this company. read more

Our realtor suggested Doug's Bugs to do a pest inspection of our house because we were putting it on the market. We had used a different company to do a pest inspection on our house a year earlier, but we went with Doug's this time. What a mistake! Doug's cited numerous "potential" concerns and put a huge price tag on them, but they were just speculating because they couldn't actually see some areas without tearing things up. They handed us an inspection report that quoted almost $20,000 in repairs, for things like tearing up the entire deck to fix dry rot, if it was indeed under there. We subsequently had a contractor come over and pull up a few deck boards, revealing that there is zero dry rot on the deck or on the house where the deck is attached. We've had many people come look at our house and express interest in it, and yet when they look at the disclosure packet they see $20,000 in pest repairs which isn't even accurate. We're convinced that this inaccurate report from Doug's Bugs is hurting our chances to sell our house, yet Doug's won't modify the report to remove the inaccurate parts. If you're selling your house and/or planning to make repairs, I suggest using another pest company that will actually produce an accurate report and not overcharge you for unnecessary repairs. The other company we used a year ago produced a very different (and accurate!) report on our house. read more

I called Doug when i saw black ant like crawly bugs in my house. He came out the next day at exactly the time we'd arranged. He was extremely thorough checking out my house and yard. I have old tree stumps in my backyard and he discovered termites. He suggested alternative solutions and assured me i didn't need his services at this time. Doug is a very honest, thoughtful and trustworthy professional. He took the time to explain everything to me and he spent at least an hour here. He explained the different types of termites (we had subterranean) that are typically seen in my area. He was very informative and explained the process. The day I got the quote, we had a swarm inside my son's room! It was chaos. I was calling for help but it was after hours. Didn't matter, they called me back and helped with some tips on how to deal until they could get out to do the treatment. In this frenzied market, I had to buy a house in Santa Rosa on a "no contingency basis. All I had was the pest report from Dougs. The first 2 pages of the report with a lot of CYA language to indemnify the company should there be oversights. Now I know why. The report was a joke. no report on an illegally installed sump pump, endless rat feces in the attic that cost me 9K to remediate, the dryer vent was clogged .... it goes on and on. We are selling our condo and our agent (Jen Birmingham, Compass Real Estate) referred us to Doug's Bugs to get an inspection and any work done that was needed. We needed some work done in both of our bathrooms and our 2 cantilevered balconies to take care of Section 1 issues. There was a SLIGHT issue with the work done in the bathrooms, but once we brought it to Doug's attention, he got it taken care of pretty quickly! The bathrooms both look great! Our biggest hurdle was our decks. Our front deck wasn't too bad, but our back deck had to be completely taken down and rebuilt. Since we have cantilevered decks, we needed to have posts installed to strengthen it up. I wasn't thrilled with that idea because I wasn't sure how they would look, but Doug's crew did an AMAZING job! Dave, Andrew & Johnny (there were a couple of other crewmen but unfortunately I can't remember their names. I'm so sorry!) did such great work and their attention to detail was perfect. I completely trusted them in my house while we were at work and my dog loved the attention they gave her I spoke with Merrick in the office a few times for scheduling and billing, and she is the best! When Justin of Doug's Bugs examined a property we were buying, we were told that they couldn't tell about subterranean termites because of debris in the crawl space. Justin said that they normally charge for reinspections, but since he hadn't been able to do a termite inspection, he would inspect for subterranean termites for free once we had the debris removed. When we did and called for the inspection, we were told that we would be charged for it. Our real estate agent then called and explained that she also heard the offer of a free termite inspection. Nevertheless, the company refused to honor the commitment their representative made in front of the three of us, saying that all three of us must have misunderstood. Then, in spite of our saying that we would not pay for an inspection that they had offered to do for free, they scheduled an inspection without our knowledge, leaving a message for us the afternoon before the appointment time (about 16 hours before the appt. time), saying that if we didn't give them 24 hours notice there would be a cancellation fee. I didn't get the message until their office was closed and when I called the next morning, the clerk again said that we might be charged a cancellation fee, even though we didn't schedule the appointment! They ultimately didn't try to charge us, but this was a frustrating, unpleasant waste of time. Additionally, the inspector missed the fact that because of support settling, the living room floor was nearly three inches lower on one side than on the other, even though we alerted him that the floor didn't seem level. Because the problem wasn't cited in the inspection report, the sellers were unwilling to adjust the sales price to reflect the $2500 we had to pay to bring the home closer to level. We wanted to use Hitmen for our inspection but they were booked for the following several weeks, and so we went with Doug's Bugs because they were available. Am I ever sorry that we didn't wait for Hitmen! We've used them in the past and they were excellent--comprehensive reports, courteous service, and clear communications. read more

If you have dry rot you definitely want to have them bid on your project. They really seem to get into getting the dry rot out. At the time I used them they were not doing any finish work after the repair. That was not a problem in my situation. You will have to pull your own permit if you are going that route. They were happy to accommodate me with the requirements of Novato's waste management plan. They are much better with phone contact than email. I don't see that as a problem for a small, family-owned business. I had to wait a month in the middle of the summer, but it was worth the wait. I would definitely contact them for any other pest remediation services. Having a licensed contractor do dry rot remediation is not an inexpensive proposition, but if you live in Novato, do you want to pay Mill Valley prices? Or Rohnert Park prices? read more

I've been very been happy with the services provided by Doug's Bugs for the last several years, particularly the caliber of their repair crew. Recently I had an experience with them that caused a problem with my client, and I was disappointed that they didn't provide a better level of customer service (see review by Wallace-Patricia W dated 8/11/17). The amount of money in question for the re-inspection was a small amount, and I felt that given the circumstances, they should have taken care of this as the customer had understood they would, rather than insisting that we'd all misunderstood.
