The food was amazing, you have to have one of their biscuits. The people are welcoming, and we had great service on top of that. There can be a wait during peak hours, but they offer an air conditioning waiting area. It's a good size restaurant so you don't have to wait very long. I had the fried chicken livers with collard greens and pinto beans and my sister had the fried chicken on the same sides. The biscuits are absolutely amazing, but they also offer cornbread. I've been to Doug's place twice and enjoyed my experience both times. First off the service is excellent. Incredibly friendly and fun. Orders are taken promptly and there is always someone walking around to refill tea and/or water. The food is delicious. Homemade southern comfort food at its finest. The friend chicken is it excellent. Super crispy and juicy on the inside. Great biscuits, too! I had a burger my second trip and it was okay. I've definitely had better but it was good quality meat and the toppings were very fresh. Sweet tea is SWEET SWEET tea. I'm new to the south so I'm not sure if this is normal or if there's is on the extra sweet side. It's really good but I suggest mixing the sweet with the unsweetened. There is a gorgeous new addition with a lovely dining area. Lots of small town feel to it. The original dining space is small but cozy and feels very local. Multimillion-dollar deals have been hashed out here (LakePoint, maybe Amazon centers and more) over biscuits and gravy or meat-and-threes. @Marksullins upped the ante when he bought the Emerson landmark and it shows (expansions and updates). Our first visit was way overdue but it was a perfect 'tween holidays stop. Food. Fried chicken livers, turnip greens and pintos beans with corn bread. Plate no. 2: Green beans, sliced tomatoes, macaroni and cheese with Texas toast. We needed something healthy after all the Christmas dining. All was good but livers could have been a bit warmer. Star of the show: the greens. Atmosphere: perfect. Embraces local history and culture amid perfect updates. That is why, even at 3:30 p.m. on a drizzly Friday, the place was filled with families and couples. Service: Good. Could be a bit more attentive (water refills). Cost: great. Two meals and tip, $26. I came here with a large group and they were so good to us! We had all placed our orders in advance so they could work on prepping ahead of time. I got the pork loins with rice and gravy with macaroni and cheese and fried potato wedges. I did have a bit of an issue with getting a drink at the beginning- I ordered a coke but the mix tasted off to me so I tried a Dr. Pepper and had the same issue. I eventually settled on an unsweetened tea. However, the waitstaff was very attentive so this was resolved quickly. The food also came out very quickly. It was no sooner than we had sat down that they were already bringing out the first plates. I believe our group was at least 30 people and they were so speedy with the service. Especially since we had a specific time slot and we ended up coming early. I think my favorite part of my meal was the fried potato wedges. My pork loins were very succulent and juicy. The rice was a bit on the mushy side for me so I didn't eat too much of it. And then we finished up with a banana pudding. The portion they gave you was so much! And it was so good. A classic!! No place like Doug's. The recent renovation have brought the place up to date but the food is still as good as it was 20 years ago. Smoked pork was flavorful and moist, Mac and cheese was creamy, collards were nice and tender. Cornbread was a little dry and server didn't really check on us after we got our food. Wow, wow, and fully packed on a Wednesday lunchtime, so the food must be amazing. I am not a pork and beans kind of girl, but they have other choices. Service is great if you ask for Tiffany or Tony. It will be a great experience if you do not mind sitting in the lobby and waiting to get in. Also, get ready to circle around Emerson to get a parking spot. The new drive-through was great. This is a breakfast and lunch (meat and sides) restaurant located in Emerson, GA. Off of Hwy. 41. Now Emerson has a population of ~1,500 people and is the gateway to Red Top Mountain State Park. On some days, the parking lot is so packed it looks like the whole town is dining at Doug's. The lunch menu changes daily and can be found laminated in plastic at each table. Upon entering a large waiting area, you enter the redo and sit at any of the numerous tables or booths. There are multi dining areas so it seats a lot of diners. The staff is friendly and quickly greets you and takes your drink order. My wife and I both opted for the fried chicken. My better half opted for one side (fried potato wedges) and while I thought at first it was a hasty decision when I tried them I once again recognized her genius. I ordered creamed corn, fried yellow squash, and turnip greens. All my sides were demo but the fried squash was awesome. If you are craving a meat and three on the drive to Red Top Mountain, you need to give Doug's a try or just take a drive to Emerson and eat some fresh and delicious country cooking. read more

Was really hoping to like the new Doug's place unfortunately it did not live up to the reviews I've seen. I don't mind waiting for a table, after all it's Friday night and the weather was actually nice so it was nice sitting outside. Once inside Our waitress was cute and very nice. I decided to try the fried chicken with a side salad, sweet potato soufflé and a corn muffin. Side salad came out quickly and was a nice salad. Then the main course came out in just a few minutes ( didn't have time to finish the salad but that's fine) I was advised the sweet potato soufflé would be out in a minute ( guess they were making more). I started on the chicken and this is where my disappointment started- not only was it not even close to being warm let alone hot it was very dry. Then I tried the corn muffin, also dry and almost hard. The soufflé did come out quickly and that was very yummy. My husband enjoyed his chicken fried steak, fried Okra and potato's. But He also was not a fan of the corn muffin. Ahh well , for service and friendliness I'd give a 5, but food for me was mehhhh . read more

Saw this place on Yelp when we were searching for a lunch spot on our way home from GA to Tennessee after Christmas. We both love country cooking and this place seemed to fit the bill based on the other reviews. First of all the parking lot was full and we got there at 1:00 on a Tuesday. That told us it was a local favorite. When we walked in there was a large waiting area with benches and people sitting there we were concerned that the wait would be too long. We walked into the restaurant and that area was full. The lady behind the register said to go downstairs and see if we saw any tables down there. There are actually 2 downstairs areas- a large area and another smaller area. The place is huge!! We found a few tables downstairs and sat down. The server came right away and took our drink order. We both ordered unsweetened tea. It was fresh brewed and great. We ordered our meal when she brought our teas. My husband ordered the meatloaf and silver queen corn with cornbread. I ordered the 3 side plate plus bread. I chose the silver queen corn, Mac n cheese and fried okra with cornbread. My husband shared his meatloaf and I shared my sides. There was more than enough food for both of us. Let me start with the corn. It was fantastic and tasted like it had just been scraped off the cob. Since it was December I know it was from frozen but we both loved it!! The Mac n cheese was homemade with cheddar cheese and baked with a slight brown crust. Yum! The fried okra looked and tasted like it was fresh made battered and fried. In other words it wasn't "perfect" like frozen battered okra is or like that at Cracker Barrel. It was great. The cornbread was also good and made the way my family makes it- not sweet. The entire meal was so good. The service was great too. Our server checked on us several times and was very friendly. The inside of the restaurant reminded me of a good old country place where families gather to eat. A pleasant place.
