The staff was friendly and atmosphere was nice. The dood, however, left a lot to be desired. My husband ordered crispy hash browns but they were not crispy, were greasy, and lukewarm. The large bowl of oatmeal was what most places where we're from would consider a small bowl and it was very runny. Omelette was also quite small and looked like it was one egg with cheese. Finally got to try Doug's place with my son for breakfast this morning. I had been wanting to eat here for some time and I had very high expectations. For the most part they were met, but certainly not exceeded. It's good, really good. Definitely better than Cracker Barrel or any other chain. But still not amazing. If I am in the area I will eat here again. I would like to try the lunch menu based on the reviews of the fried chicken and okra. The breakfast menu is good. The biscuits flaky and the cinnamon roll was excellent. It is definitely worth a visit, but I would not drive far out of my way for it. Very long line to be seated but when way faster than expected. Seated within 20 mins! Talked to very nice folks while waiting! We both had the mild catfish. He had green bean and potatoes with a gigantic biscuit. I had turnip greens and tomatoes with hush puppies. All delicious but I've had more flavorful hush puppies (still good, though). Lunch has now been tried. Everything is made in house. Got the one meat 3 veg plate. Meatloaf I'm still craving two weeks later. Mash, under seasoned but nothing some salt couldn't fix. Green beens, almost as good as my husbands. Macaroni was over cooked, but I find that true in most places in this part of Georgia. Didn't have room for it, but tried the strawberry cobbler anyway. Went for breakfast, asked for a fluffy omelette, that the server said they could do. Reminded her twice before she left and it came back like a crepe. It was a western omelette and it had a lot of veggies and ham but only a small sprinkle of cheese on top. Hashbrowns were way overcooked, price with coffee and tip $$. Doug's Place is a regional treasure! I've dined here over a dozen times during the past year. Consistently excellent (food & service) whether it's breakfast or lunch. Easy access off of I-75. There will be a wait during peak times on the weekend however it's well worth it. A packed parking lot is always a good sign when deciding where to eat. Excited for their growth. This restaurant has wonderful country food. The patty melt is far better than waffle house. The biscuits are wonderfully fluffy and buttery. We LOVED Doug's!! Group of 6 was promptly seated. We sat at the booth with the famous Rebel flag. No we were not offended. It was a heritage statement. The food was not disappointing! Great hamburger steak well done!! Pork roast was good. Fried chicken was good. And the BLT was satisfying! The fried okra was melt in your mouth, slap your momma good!! I agreed with a couple of fellow yelpers who have come here. This place is not exactly the best place for minority or people with color. Service staffs were friendly though. Let me start off with the ambience. AMBIENCE 1/5 Doug's Place is located in a charming house, not my kind of house for sure. It has its charm. Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed a number of patrons were staring at us. Our party of 5 include two Caucasians, two Asians and one Jamaican. I was not too fazed by the unwelcoming stares by the local patrons (mainly male), though one of us who went to the bathroom received a hostile stare down from a fellow diner. I guess no one needed to be dine in an uncomfortable setting. So that's a no go for us in future. It's a shame, but then again we are in the South and this is Cartersville. SERVICE 5/5 Our service staff was friendly and hospitable. I have no complaints about the service. Note they charge a fee if you are paying with a credit or debit card. FOOD 2/5 I ordered the Fried Chicken with two sides- mashed potato with brown gravy and cream corn. Fried Chicken 3/5 It was good but I definitely had better in many places. The meat was not particularly tender and juicy. The batter has a good flavor. Mashed Potato with brown gravy 1/5 First time I heard of an option of white and brown gravy. The mashed potato was terrible. It was not mashed well. The brown gravy just odd. The mashed potato I made at home would be way better and that says a lot :( Creamed Corn 2/5 A "no" for me. The fried catfish, homemade mashed potatoes, collards, fresh silver queen creamed corn and biscuits were some of our favs. Oh, and the fresh carrot cake was BOMB. This place is an icon in its community. It's a drive we're willing to take from time to time over the years because it just feels right to be eating classic Southern food in this timeless, roadside diner. "Git yer name on the list and have a seat on the waiting-room pews." With plenty of parking and lots of tables, it won't be too long; it's worth it, anyway. You'll have great service! You can have a hearty breakfast of meats, pancakes, or omelettes, but I'd recommend the biscuits. If they're serving lunch, get their house-made chicken fingers to throw on that biscuit with some honey and butter! Not sure why they they use a frozen chicken patty on the biscuit when they have THE BEST fried chicken. ???!!! Anyway, they also have delicious sides, like mac&cheese and fried okra. The burgers are on the small side, so I'd go with a meat and two veggies served with bread (biscuits for me, please!). My husband and I ordered the County Fries Steak with 3 sides and Chicken Liver with 3 sides. I ordered it at 2pm and said I wanted it ready at 4pm. My husband brings in the food, I open the to-go boxes and immediately knew the kitchen staff prepared everything way to early. The livers has no crust on them and they were black and dried out.
