Abby was our bartender/server and made us feel so comfortable and welcome, we knew this was "our place" to have a drink or two and some petiscos. We had patatas bravas, tuna crudo, and scallop crudo. My friend is vegetarian, so they deconstructed both dishes to keep the veg separate from the seafood so we could both enjoy. All in all, a solid dining experience. Restaurant was inviting and has a really fun interior, I love the style of seating. We had an earlier reservation at 6, so had our pick of spots. They put us at the chefs window which was much appreciated. I love getting to see the workings of the kitchen, everyone so locked in, guessing if maybe they're working on my treat next. For food we ordered a little of everything, some deviled eggs, the mini lobster roll, the cod croquettes, the zucchini, the potatoes, and the cod and chicken for entrees. I thought all our starters were awesome, if not just a bit too much on the small side. The most egregious being the zucchini, two grilled slices for the price of 18 dollars. Drinks were awesome too, and I thank them for enlightening me on the amazingness of poncha. I found the cod to be just a tad overcooked, but the sauce was awesome. My chicken was cooked perfectly, though the glaze was a bit too sweet for my liking. We got some basque cheesecake to go, it was served with some nice tiny blueberries and sauce. I haven't posted on Yelp in a while. I'm always torn whether to review a place that we have loved because it will just make it harder to get a reservation in the future. But fairness requires this. Last night at Douro, my wife and I had our best Portland dining experience in quite some time. The atmosphere and welcoming service are as good as everyone says. I understand that some of the non-5-star reviews had inconsistent experiences with their food. All I can say to that is that perhaps with more time they have "worked out the kinks" because every course--every bite--we had last night was near perfection and totally hit the spot for being a little different for Portland. We each got a red sangria to start, and would highly recommend for sangria lovers. For small plates, we shared the Salt Cod Croquettes and the Zucchini; we then shared the Tuna Crudo, for entrees, my wife had the Mushroom Porridge and I had the fish special, which was Roasted Halibut. Everything was cooked perfectly and with wonderful flavor. Our waitress recommended a Portuguese white wine that went perfectly with the Halibut. We were ready to pass on dessert only because we were full, but our waitress could see we were torn so she offered to bring us a "taste" of something new to get our feedback (I think she was just being generous). It was a small slice of a custard pie, about 2-3 bites for each of us, and it was absolutely delicious and satisfying and turned out to be all that we needed, although we would happily order full portions next time and take some home if need be. Perfect date night location, although also great for couples so that you can order more of the small plates for sharing. We would have loved to try their Douro deviled eggs and their house salad but didn't want to overdo it. We will look forward to returning. read more

Best kept secret! We kind of stumbled into Douro tonight and it was such a pleasant surprise. We were seated immediately at the bar for drinks and apps. Our server Abby was incredible. So knowledgeable and helpful and sweet. She went out of her way to make sure our apps were perfect even separating the fish so I could (as a vegetarian) enjoy everything. A chef even came out to see if we were enjoying everything. Drinks were perfect. The atmosphere was casual but so elegant. Loved eating at Douro! The service was impeccable--from the greeter to all of the waitstaff and everyone who came to help us. It's a beautiful restaurant with high end touches. My husband got a citrusy cocktail and I got a glass of white wine. We also shared the cataplana for two as our entree. It came with mussels, a small lobster, shrimp, and chorizo in a rich broth. There were three sauces that came with it: an amazing mayonnaise, a chimichurri, and a vinegar based hot sauce. They also had their version of Old Bay seasoning. It was served with Carolina gold rice. It was so fun pairing the seafood with the sauces and seasonings and pouring the broth over the rice. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

My mother recently got back from a cruise on the Douro River! She was THRILLED to know that this place was open, so I thought I'd take her here to give it a try. I'm SO glad we did! The staff and service were incredible, the food was out of this world, and even the doors to the place were beautiful! We will definitely be back again soon. We had: - A Port & Tonic (my new fav cocktail tbh) - A wonderful, earthy, Spanish red wine from La Roja - The Cod - The Mushroom Porridge (Plus a surprise bit of pork pica pau which was delicious, and I will be ordering some again next time!) - And last (but certainly not least) we boxed up two little custard tarts to go, because we all but licked our plates! Portuguese food in Maine? We were skeptical, but Douro delivered and just exceeded my expectations in every way. First off, I want to give a shoutout to the staff. We were running late for our reservation due to some unexpected delays, and we called them and they were so accommodating. From the moment we stepped inside, as others have mentioned, we felt like we were in a bustling Portuguese/Spanish taverna. The restaurant is beautiful inside, and relatively compact (which I think leads to the lively and bustling atmosphere). The tiles and decor are reminiscent of Portugal, although our server told us that the menu is also influenced by Spanish cuisine (note that Spanish influence is more subtle; the place is definitely more Portuguese fare than anything else). We sat at this bar-like area near the kitchen, where we had a partial view of all the action. At first, I thought it would be tight and uncomfortable, but it worked just fine. We started our night with the vermouth service, a $14/pp (2 people minimum) vermouth experience that I cannot recommend enough. We got two glasses filled with their house vermouth + a small carafe with more (it was delicious), frozen grapes, lemon, sparkling water, Spanish potato chips, and the most delicious olives. It was enough to make two vermouth-based drinks. If you're into vermouth, this is a must. We were impressed by the extensive menu and, in retrospect, ordered too much food from the excitement (there was no room for dessert, sadly). The menu included many small, shareable dishes (as expected) and local seafood, but also offered sizable mains. The "small plates" portions ended up being bigger than expected (nice surprise!). We loved everything. The green eggs and ham were a hit, as was the Gildas. The pork belly (pork pica Pau) was delicious. We definitely had too much salt between the gem lettuce and the salt cod croquettes; the latter was on the saltier side but still delicious. This is a great spot for family-style meals. My husband's ribeye was good, albeit "not out of this world" according to him, but my half-chicken with spicy marinade and honey was one of the best chicken dishes I've had this year. All in all, I think Douro will be a hit in Portland. This is a place you can stop at for a drink, a proper date night, or a family-style meal with friends. From the moment we stepped into Douro, we were charmed -- from the warm welcome by hostess, Emi, to the gracious service from our knowledgeable waitress, Alyssa. The Portuguese-inspired dishes were delicious, colorful, and beautifully presented. The ambiance was both comforting and elegant. This is a new favorite. We spent our Valentine's Day at this charming restaurant. It was a price fix menu with many delicious selections. When we arrived we were greeted by two friendly hosts. The room we originally arrived in was decorated with plants and a bar. We were brought to the back room which felt a bit sterile. We were seated at the end of a long table that reminded me of being in a school. The food that was served was delicious. I have a gluten allergy and they were sure to meet my needs. We were seated in the bar side of the restaurant because there were private parties in the dining room. At my previous visit this area was exceedingly noisy but seated facing the windows seemed to help although I hate that seating arrangement for conversations The food is exceptional and creative. Considering the proximity to my office, this was the most anticipated opening for me, and I'm very pleased with the early results. Douro is a far larger and more accessible space than sister restaurant Twelve. If that is a once-a-year special occasion dinner, Douro could easily be a spot for a casual drink and app. While the whole menu is not Portuguese, probably half is, which is new to the city. The Good: -The drink menu is well conceived. Wines are available in 5 sizes(!) and thoughtfully sorted by flavor profile. You can certainly ball out, but there's also some great values. Is it appropriate to order a carafe for yourself? I'll find out. -There are some unusual drinks. We tried the Vermouth Service ($14 per person) which consisted of a small carafe of vermouth, a huge bottle of sparkling water, the best marinated olives I've ever had, potato chips, candy gummies, and glasses with frozen grapes. This was basically an appetizer and drink package in one and we found it extremely unique and fun. It's also the single best order in the "Golden Hour" of 3:30-4:30, when most of the kitchen is closed. -There's a Poncha Pitcher ($50), which serves four (or two of me). This traditional Madeira drink has rum, honey and orange. The menu also emphasizes sherries, ports and madeiras. Elsewhere, if these are offered at all, it's only during dessert, so I love seeing them featured. -The food menu is a mix of safe and comfortable (halibut, ribeye, fried calamari, oysters, gem lettuce) and more adventurous (tinned fish, piri-piri chicken, mushroom porridge, cataplana and several other Portuguese dishes). The pork collar ($32) was very good, and deceptively spicy with the hot pepper. -Service is already perfected and the atmosphere almost feels Lisbon-ish. It's a bright, slick space with many varieties of seating. It's also the rare downtown restaurant that can comfortably seat large parties. The Less Good: -It's a new opening, so there's some quirks. The attractive entry doors open directly into bar seats, and the gust of air on fall days already makes the bar chilly. It would be unbearable in winter, so they'll need to curtain shop or find some solution. -The cocktail menu has no descriptions, which is unusual in general, but doesn't work when half of the choices are Portuguese. The N/A menu re-lists all of the same cocktails, taking valuable menu space that could be used for descriptions. -It would be nice if the main courses came with a side. They're not quite filling enough on their own, and once you add a $5 side, it approaches more expensive, Scales-type territory. Douro has been open for just two days (as of this review) but is already so polished. It's refreshing that it's not another overpriced small plate restaurant, and the many Portuguese dishes mean I'll need several return visits to try them all. Yes, this is a Portuguese "inspired" restaurant so don't disappoint yourself thinking this is a Portuguese restaurant as it is not. I am Portuguese so I went in very excited. I loved the decor, which definitely has a Portuguese vibe. The music was not so great as I would have liked maybe a little Fado music intertwined with their modern music. Service was top notch and extremely attentive. It was right up there with white glove service. You have multiple workers ready to help you at any moment. Presentation of the dishes was outstanding. They really are passionate about the process. I LOVED the (what I assume) to be one of the chefs coming out to explain the dishes we had such as the mussels, canned appetizer, and the star of the evening The Cataplana. The Cataplana served for 2 people, I would say, with not a huge appetite as the portions weren't all that big but it was perfect for how hungry we were. The smoked mussel appetizer was absolutely unbelievable. All of our meals were extremely tasty. I feel you can't go wrong with any dish. The piri piri chicken was the most moist chicken that I've had in my lifetime. It was a large portion that we actually took home leftovers. The Poncha carafe was lovely and you can't go 2 feet in Madeira without ordering a Poncha. It is the traditional drink. For dessert we had a Pastal de nata (means single). On the menu it says pasteis, which is multiple but you only get one. It was good not great and overly priced at $9 when the same thing for brunch is $7. We enjoyed ourself so much, we went back for brunch the next day and I highly recommend Brunch as well. I'm thinking it was my favorite. I had the egg sandwich served in a Portuguese muffin. A MUST try. We had the bifana, which is far from a traditional bifana and more like a Cuban sandwich. Traditional bifana would be on a bulky Portuguese roll w marinated slices of pork. It was more like pulled pork and had pickles and mustard and served on the Portuguese muffin. It was so delicious we ordered one to go. My daughter loved her torrijas carmelizadas. Came here for a celebration dinner a few weeks ago. VERY Cute space. I loved the colors and the tiles! It was mellow when we went but if it gets busier the tables are communal so things could get tight. We got just about everything on the menu (okay, not that much but we got a lot.). Started with the Vermouth service which was DELICIOUS. High quality vermouth and snacks and super worth it. Great wine list. I really enjoyed the green eggs. Alyssa was our server (I think) and she was SO good at explaining things and making recommendations. My husband got the steak and it was SO good. I got the little neck clams which were tasty, but if I went back I would probably get something different just to try something more unique. The sides were divine, the food great. First off, it wasn't as pricey as we expected! The people from Twelve and "small" plates? Yes, but the small plates were large and the prices somewhat more digestible (and entrées are available). Secondly, we didn't expect such swank! There never used to be places in Maine where you felt a bit underdressed and now there are several. Not sure that's such a good thing but what's great is the food and service: Swift, delicious, mostly local and we were glad they knew from where their larger shrimp originated (N. Carolina). A crab dip special, squash side (seasonal), cataplana, and pork pica pau really stood out, while the fried calamari was boring and part of the potatas bravas was beyond double fried. One problem was that the only bottles of wine under $40 were not available. Still we were four guests and shared one $40ish bottle, a cocktail, lots of food and a fabulous lemon bar (best ever?) and the total was $260. Not cheap but similar to most restaurants in its class. Last evening was an amazing experience. When they talk about inclusive practices on their website they mean it. My son often has a hard time eating out with our extended family as he is not adventurous. His autism prevents him from feeling included sometimes when dining out. The staff went above and beyond to make him feel comfortable. It literally brought me to tears to be made so welcome in a restaurant. AND THE FOOD! o my gosh . I was adventurous and the octopus was amazing. There were tempura beans that were heavenly, and my son loved their fries. We booked reservations at Twelve last year for Mother's Day and it was fantastic. Twelve did not open this year for Mother's Day. We discussed to go to Douro this year, Pretty much across the street. It was a nice atmosphere, seated right away and everything was very nice up until my wife ordered the most expensive meal the steak and egg. We asked the service if she could get the egg scrambled The server said yes that would not be a problem. She return a few minutes later the inform us that would not be possible. The kitchen is not set up for that. We asked that the fried egg not be runny. It sounds crazy that they could not accommodate a customer paying for their most expensive meal for a simple scrambled egg. I think that the chef or kitchen staff was just pompous about serving their egg as scrambled. When I asked for the bill, there was the total and then a kitchen staff tax.( seriously !!! For be arrogant!) I think not! They can keep their pompous food. Never again. read more

Have been to Douro a number of times, but mostly around it's opening months ago. Recently returned with a group of 4.... it was a completely different restaurant from previous visits. And while the food was certainly ok, it lacked the "zip" that characterized previous visits. Service was perfectly fine. Douro is such a gem in Portland. We had an absolutely wonderful dinner here and were impressed from start to finish. We ordered the cod, crudo, fried calamari, turnips, chocolate mousse, and the egg tart, and every single dish was flavorful without being overdone. The cod was beautifully prepared, the crudo was fresh and clean, and the fried calamari was perfectly crisp and light. Even the turnips stood out. They were simple but thoughtfully executed. For dessert, the chocolate mousse was rich yet balanced, and the egg tart was the perfect sweet finish. What really elevated the experience was the hospitality. The service was warm and attentive, and we especially enjoyed sitting right in front of the kitchen, where we could casually chat with the chef and kitchen team as they worked. At the end of the meal, the owner came by to check in and talk with us, which felt thoughtful and genuine. The whole evening had a welcoming, personal feel. Douro delivers refined Portuguese flavors with heart. We will definitely be back. read more

Where to start? There are so many good things to say and not enough time. I'll start with what everyone should know off the bat - the food is absolutely top-notch, amazing, delicious, sumptuous. We ordered their showcase meal - the cataplana. They describe the cataplana as a traditional Portuguese copper vessel that locks in steam and flavor, used to prepare aromatic seafood stews. In this case, it was a seafood stew that included lobster, shrimp, mussels, clams and fish....with a delicious steaming bowl of gold rice to soak it all up. The closest parallel that I can think of is a cioppino. No matter what you call it, it is absolutely amazing = rich, delicious flavors all mixed together into one hot bowl of ambrosia. They give you a ton of accoutrements that actually enhance the flavors and aromas in a good way - some piri piri to make it hotter, some fancy seafood seasoning salt, a roasted lemon, etc -- and I advise you to definitely take advantage of them. The broth itself, which could easily be overlooked when you have so many delicious types of seafood in front of you, was SUPERB -- seasoned to perfection. Absolutely save some room to enjoy the rice and broth. We also ordered the vermouth service and what a good choice! They serve you a beautiful assortment of vermouth and ice (and sparkling water), along with a selection of bar snacks that are worth the price of admission alone. In my case, we had olives, crisps, sour candies and lemon wedges. Our vermouth was slightly sweet, so pairing it with the sour candies and lemon was a hit with us all. The olives themselves practically melted in our mouths (careful, they do have pits!) and served as a great contrast to the vermouth flavors. At least 2 people must order this drink service, but it is definitely worth it. Our appetizers were also so amazing that I think the next time we go here (and we WILL go here again), we may just order 5 or 6 appetizers and call it done! OR, maybe it just means that we should go to their brunches on Saturday and Sunday. We ordered the octopus confit - it is NOT a spread or a gelled concoction, despite the name - and got sumptuous pieces of grilled octopus topped with a savory pimento (pepper) sauce. The cabbage conserva (delicious cooked (steamed?) cabbage rolled to perfection with an exquisite tomato sauce and accompanied with almond slivers) was also a hit and a great recommendation for any vegetarians in the group. We thought we were too stuffed for dessert, but luckily commonsense won out in the end and we got to enjoy a delicious pastel de nata and an almond cake. YUM. GOSTOSO. What did I not talk about? Ah yes - service. Well, that was amazing as well -- from the moment we entered the restaurant to when we sadly had to leave: Amazingly attentive and knowledgeable wait staff, a young and energetic group of servers and bartenders, and a very delightful crew of maitre d's and hosts to fill in the gaps. A few times, even a chef came out to describe what we had ordered (or in the case of our vermouth service, the woman in charge of the bar). All in all, another success for Portland's vibrant dining scene. We will absolutely go back and have already told friends that they will be eating here when they visit us in 2026. read more

I had high hopes for Duoro. They have a good pedigree - I like Twelve a lot. Sadly, after being open for only a couple of weeks, or so, they still need some work, mostly for food. The service was excellent. The concept of Duoro as a Portuguese inspired seafood restaurant seemed a little diluted. Duoro seems like a restaurant with an identity crisis. Oddly enough the land-inspired dishes worked the best for me when I went there tonight. The shrimp chorizo was...interesting. I don't know that I liked it or not. Its flavor was good enough but texturally it felt off. The pork belly with giardineria was good. The pork was overcooked though. They should have left some of the pork fat unrendered to let the vinegar from the pickled vegetables work on it. A real missed opportunity. As served, the pork didn't meld with the vegetables. It was nice but not great. The little neck main dish was quite nice but unbalanced. There was too much acidity in the broth. Whether it was from too much lemon or too much vinegar, I'm not sure. The dish only suffered if you ate the broth. The rest of the dish was quite nice. The standout had to be the pork collar. It was the single dish that seemed to be flawlessly executed. So, one out of four is...pretty shameful actually. I hope that they figure the menu out soon enough. I'd like to give them another shot but my initial impression is that Duoro should have spent more time with the menu than the concept. Sadly, both left me wanting. read more

6 of us went to Douro today for Easter brunch. It was a first time trying it. We all thought it was fabulous. First, the oysters were large and so tasteful and from 3 different areas. We all got something a little bit different. The lobster roll appetizer was delicious. The Portuguese pulled pork was beyond delicious. I could go on and on about each order. Second, the prices were VERY fair for Portland area. My boyfriend and I got an appetizer, a drink each, 2 meals for $82.00. Cheaper than breakfast the previous day somewhere else! And lastly, the service was excellent! Our waitress was on spot and very friendly. Others stopped by as well. It is a bright and cheery place as well. We had the roasted almonds, the Lady Edison ham, the confit octopus, the salt cod croquetas, patatas bravas, and the brussel sprout special. We would happily order everything again. Lydia was a fantastic wait person this morning for brunch. She explained each offering to us and especially helped me find gluten free options. An omelet with potato chips? Add roe? Stumbled across this on their opening night and lucky i did!! really fantastic, had the omelette with salmon roe, the mushroom porridge, and patatas bravas all super good. and an excellent take on a margarita. Nice staff, nice place, will definitely be back and looking forward to it too. read more
