I went with a friend for the early bird dinner. I ordered the Parmesan crusted cod expecting some light Parmesan dusted panko crumbs. The entire piece of fish was coated top and bottom with heavy bread crumbs. I would expect a vegetable or rice but it was served with a plate full of overcooked gummy pasta. The starter salad was inundated with garbanzo beans, which isn't a big deal but I dislike them. The food was pretty low quality. The waiter was talking to a "regular" for a few minutes and we waited a while for our food to be served. I used to go there years ago and forgot about the place so I decided to try it. Today I went to try seafood at Dover. Walked in to the restaurant and ambience was good. Ordered blue martini and Italian martini. Both were really good and you can feel perfect taste not too much hard. Ordered Oysters Rockefellers as an appetizer and highly I will recommend it and it is really good with the creamy spinach sauce. Ordered main course as salmon and to be honest it was not that much great but it is good. I feel like salmon is very very soft and tasteless at bottom. I feel like they have cooked too long. But anyway I will be definitely will go again and they do have a lot of options on seafood which can't be found near by. read more

First off all the food was good. Another reviewer said it was not enough food but I had trouble finishing it all last time I went. I also like the atmosphere although also like someone else said there are not many young people. The restaurant looks nice inside and is finely decorated. The problem I have is on two consecutive trips this happened. With certain orders soup comes with. They have good Clam Chowder. The thing is that if you order the soup separately there are two sizes. The entrées I chose the soup came with. I wanted the larger size and offered to pay the difference and the waiters both days said it would be fine and they could get me the larger size. Both times I got the smaller size. I don't know if this is because they don't speak English well or what. read more

Like many other Yelpers, I passed by this restaurant many times while driving to other nearby places -- assuming it was very expensive to eat here like many other seafood restaurants in the Chicago suburbs. However, after doing my research that lunch and early bird prices were only about $10-$20 for a large serving of food. This was a bit of a surprise as you can get steaks and seafood for only a few more dollars than going to eat a normal lunch at a casual chain restaurant. Like other seafood themed restaurants in the suburbs, this restaurant featured lots of sea themed decorations on the walls and throughout the interior. The dining rooms are nicely lit with fairly comfortable chairs and the sound of other diners isn't too loud. The menu is impressive with lots of seafood options with food all the way from local lakes to the ocean with prices ranging from about 10 dollars to a sandwich to 60 dollars for North Australian lobster tail. Service was very professional from our server Michelle. She was constantly moving items on and off the table to maximize room for dining, explaining menu items in detail, attentive to special requests, and providing a smile throughout the entire dinner service. Food was overall fairly good. The preparations lean a bit on the healthier side, choosing to highlight the ingredients rather than over seasoning, frying, or dousing seafood in sauce. Sometimes I enjoyed this and sometimes I wasn't a fan -- here are my thoughts on the items I tried. Bread: Crisp crust and freshly made. Would've liked the soft part to be more moist or chewy, but this went well with the soup and appetizer. PEI Steamed Mussels: Fresh mussels that were not overcooked. The sauce wasn't overpowering with garlic or wine and the presentation was very nice. Clam Chowder: Very creamy but overall light in flavor. I tasted more potato and celery flavor than clam, although there was a good amount of meat in the cup. Lobster bisque: Very creamy with little bits of lobster here and there. I wasn't a huge fan of the preparation but this is done better than most local restaurants which serve the same dish. Table-side salad: One of the highlights of the visit. You get to design your own salad from a selection of popular ingredients. This salad is fairly large and the flavor is pretty similar to what you'd be getting from a Barnabys or Claim Company salad bar. Prime rib: Generous size portion that's cooked fairly tender and juicy -- without being too salty and with a nice creamy horseradish sauce. I wish the cut had a little more fat, but this was a very nice portion for only $22. Strip Steak: For about the same price on the early bird special, I'd order this instead. It is a generous size cut with a good level of thickness on the meat. The outside is charred nicely to seal the juices inside perfectly. Better than many steakhouses I've been to. Lake Superior Whitefish Filet: Best item I had in the entire meal. The meat of the fish was rich, fresh, and delicious. The sliced almonds added a nice texture contrast. Orange Roughy: Crusted very well with macadamia nuts which added a nice crunch to contrast the tender fish. Generous sized filet. Captain's selection: Very good deal as the lobster tail alone typically costs more than this entire entree. Seasoning was a bit on the light side as I would've preferred something to help draw out the sweetness of the seafood. Shrimp Bakers & Pasta: Great presentation and great flavor. The angel hair was tender and buttery which provided a great base for the stuffed shrimp. Sides: Fries were hearty and crisp, fairly standard. Green beans were fresh and the onion added a nice sweetness. Roasted house potatoes were soft and seasoned very lightly but the texture was nice and creamy to contrast the light roasting on the skin. Ice cream and sherbet: Creamy and delicious -- with a good size portion. Tiramisu: Very creamy and nicely presented. Not too sweet, even with the berry sauce though I would've liked more rum to make the ladyfingers more moist. Overall, 5 stars for the total experience. The food was solid, but wasn't particularly special in terms of flavors or textures. However, plating and portion size were very good -- and you'll have a tough time finding a better deal for seafood and premium entrees at this price. Plus, the great service, appropriate decor, excellent menu variety, and friendly staff make it a joy to visit the restaurant. Overall, a good budget-friendly restaurant to enjoy fresh seafood in healthier preparations. read more

I see a lot of reviews here mentioning the older demographic at the establishment And I can see why, the food here is amazing, from the cozy atmosphere, the aesthetic, and many more wonderful things. We came here for my moms birthday and we wear greeted and then seated and appetizers were very good. When our entires came, we were blown away. My dad called ahead and they were able to make my mom the lobsters Thermidor which they took of the menu and it was spectacular. My parents love this place and I can definitely see why. I had an amazing dinner recently here and it was incrediable. I have been here many many times and they really do a nice job and make you feel so welcome. This place. I can not put my finger on it but there is just something about it. Normally this place would get a two star or three star out of me at most; but I am going to give it a full four stars despite what my wife says ;-) and I will tell you why. Here is the good: 1) The anchovy dressing available on the salad cart 2) The fish special with the almonds on top of it 3) The two older gentlemen who greet you at the counter when you enter, they are real charmers 4) I have lived in Chicago for 8 years now and have never ever heard of this place 5) Walking in from the parking lot, which was packed I might add on a Thursday night, an older lady, who asked for help turning off her headlights (she had taken her husbands car and was not familiar with it) told me that this place was here before she was born and she has been coming to it for years. In the restaurant business, that is impressive. 6) The booths in the bar are cozy 7) Came on a Friday night and there was an actual lounge band in the bar with people dancing and it made for great background music and people watching 8) The fact that the place is always packed, but that it is also so big, that I can literally call up on any given night and be guaranteed a table 9) Vodka tonics are served in tall glasses, not short 10) When you pull up to the outside for the first time, it has that old school cheesy nautical theme going, it reminds me of something John Candy would pull up to in The Great Outdoors movie ;) 11) There is this general overall feeling of two dimensions that have overlapped at the junction of this restaurant. One dimension is the John Hughes era, the other dimension is the current time. Or maybe if the movie Groundhog Day opened a restaurant, it would be this one. 12) The place is full of blue hairs, so a good option to take the grandfolks out to dinner Here is the bad: 1) Bacon bits on salad cart are fake 2) Salad on salad cart is iceburg 3) Side vegetables that come with meals are very uninspiring (broccoli and cauliflower like you would make at home) I always pay extra to get the side of asparagus 4) The current blackened seafood app is very underwhelming, choose something else 5) We ordered the lobster/shrimp/scallop special, the most underwhelming aspect of the plate? The lobster. It looked perfect, and was cooked properly, but it had no flavor or taste to it. Even the hot butter brought to the table did not help. Not sure if they dial back for the benefit of the older folks palates or what, but I say, if you are going to serve lobster, do it rich! My husband visit Dover Straits for a work meeting and came home raving. He's from the Chesapeake Watershed area, so he takes his seafood seriously. I trusted his judgement. I may have to second guess him next time. We visit Dover Straits for dinner last night. The gentlemen that greeted us as we entered were super friendly and sweet. We were immediately seated in a large drafty room with sea decor and aquariums everywhere. Out waiter arrived at our table - he was a bit serious, but very attentive and nice. My husband and I ordered two beers. The beers came in bottles - I didn't think to ask if they had a draft selections. We both ordered the special - a lobster tail with two shrimp and two scallops. They came with a side salad and a choice of baked potato, sliced potato medallions or rice. Broccoli and cauliflower were also served with the dish. We ordered a side of asparagus to get a more adventurous side. The side salad is fixed at your table. A salad boat comes around to each table where you pick your ingredients and a salad is made just for you. So cute. Unfortunately the lettuce is iceberg with no flavor. I was impressed with the choice of toppings. Ask if they will give you dressing on the side...my salad was drowning in dressing...it was so yucky. The dinner looked lovely when it was arrived. Sadly the lobster was slightly rubbery with absolutely no flavor. We sprinkled a bit of salt on it and squeezed lemon all over it. That seemed to help a bit, but the lack of flavor was really disappointing. I realized at some point that the music I heard from the bar was really a band! That was impressive. My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night. We went at 8:30, perfect time- no waiting! (We like to eat late.) calamari was excellent! We both had surf and turf- he had salmon I had crab cakes and a filet for both. The steak was out of this world! His salmon was great, just different than how we cook it at home so it tasted off, not anyone's fault. My crab cakes were good, I think I ordered the wrong surf part. I just didn't like it- not The restaurant's fault. The ambience is old supper club kind of atmosphere. I remember going here with my parents as a child. It hasn't changed much. After passing by this place in the suburbs for so many years, some friends and I finally decided to try it out. The crowd is definitely older, and I assume the regulars have been coming for nice seafood dinners for a while. This year marks the restaurant's 38th anniversary, so it had to be good right? Our service was excellent- very professional and fancy. I ordered the salmon salad, and I loved the salad boat that comes before the meal! A glass of the house Cabernet also paired with my food nicely. My friend received a nice birthday surprise dessert at the end of the meal- a slice of pumpkin cheesecake, key lime pie, and tiramisu cake. It was delicious and great for the group to share. The decor and ambience of Dover straits was very traditional upscale, which was perfect for families and older crowds. It's very quiet- great for family gatherings but maybe not the best for a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. The food was pretty good though, so I'm glad I got to try it! read more

Dover Straits - Salmon salad - Seafood Near Me - Mundelein, Illinois

My dad requested Dover Straits for his birthday dinner. My family has been there before, and we were happy to return. Though the restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, the food is always good and the unique décor (a large aquarium and antique boat compasses, for example) always spark a conversation and help set the stage for a seafood dinner. Bread was brought to our table as soon as we were seated. There was nothing remarkable about the bread, but it was nice to have as we took our time perusing the menu. I ended up ordering the Maryland style crab cake entrée (I considered getting the crab cake sandwich, but that came with fries and I wanted the salad, veggies and potato that the entrée offered). My salad was prepared in front of me with ingredients from a cart shaped like a boat and labeled "Titanic" - a cute addition to the restaurant's nautical theme, though not super classy looking. It was iceberg lettuce, which I generally dislike, but there were enough toppings offered to make up for it. Salad toppings included cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, onions, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, carrots, bacon bits and croutons. There was also a choice of dressing. I opted for blue cheese, since there was no shredded cheese available for the salad and I wanted a bit of a sharper flavor. The server proceeded to dump an entire ladle of dressing over my salad - probably at least 5 ounces of dressing. The same thing happened to everyone at my table - our salads were absolutely swimming in dressing. Next time, I'll be sure to ask for half a serving of dressing or request it on the side! My entrée included three crab cakes, fried julienne vegetables and a choice of a rice pilaf, baked potato or twice-baked potato. I chose the twice-baked potato, and was not disappointed. It was deliciously seasoned on top. I didn't know what to expect with the veggies, but I was up for the adventure. If you are familiar with veggie straws, the fried veggies were pretty similar to those, except thinner. I'm not sure what kind of vegetables they were. They basically looked like colored French fries, and could have easily been eaten with my fingers - but I remained civilized and used my fork! I also received a side of roasted red pepper aioli, which I used more for a dipping sauce for the veggie-fries than I did for the crab, though it tasted great on both. The crab cakes were good, though not super memorable. (Bob Chinn's makes the best crab cakes, in my opinion!) We had mentioned to the server that we were there for a birthday celebration, and at the end of the meal, he brought our celebrant a generous slice of cheesecake on a plate drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce, which was a nice way to end the meal. The average price of an entrée was around $25, which is reasonable for the amount of food and its quality. Our overall total was brought up by the price of a king crab leg entrée. The bill totaled a little more than $150 (including three drinks, and before tip) for four people. We used coupons from the restaurant's website to save $20. Overall, we had a good experience and will return -- probably for other special occasions, since it's on the pricier side for a routine night out. read more

I came here a few years ago for a party. But today, I came here for a wedding shower for a family friend. Our event was in the back room, which was a good size for our party. A waiter went around collecting drink orders as I arrived. Starter: Warm bread and butter Lobster bisque, which was amazing! I could have this all day. Salad with an array of dressings Lunch Salmon in hollindaise sauce, steamed spinach, baby potatoes, which was delicious!. Took the wife out for dinner tonite for the first time in months ! Many months ! Called Dover Straits to check availability of indoor dining & was told, Yes, they could accommodate us. They didn't disappoint ! Cocktails were great as was the Blue Point oysters. Fresh and pristine as could be. I could taste the ocean with every slurp. I had the San Francisco cioppino, it was excellent. Have had this dish numerous times on the left coast, Dover Straits version was as good as some that I have sampled in the bay area. Meals are always good at Dover Straits. Prices are running on the high side these days, but I think the next election will fix that. However there's a problem the ownership needs to fix. Their wait staff is rushing service to move customers through the restaurant and that is not acceptable. There are times when I can barely order our meals, before the server finishes our order for us and leaves to address another matter of greater precedence in her life. Before I'm too quick to place all of my discomfort on our server, let me also comment that the bussing people are too quick to grab out plates, as they walk by, and without asking. It's nice to know that I'm finished eating, but I wish they'd let me in on it. So this tells me there's a management problem here and only they have the solution. I hope they figure it out before they lose me as a customer. Final comment: the foregoing is not a recap of events from just one visit. My complaints are repetitive incidents from a series of visits, for which I can no longer make excuses for them. read more

I dined at Dover Street last night and was met with amazing service. The host greeted me upon interest and the waiter took me over to a table and asked if I would be drinking anything. The establishment was so nice and cozy inside designed in a rustic modern Decor. The waiter allowed me a couple minutes to decide what I wanted but brought over a fresh warm loaf of bread and butter so that I could munch on while I decided. After I asked for his recommendations, I narrowed it down to either softshell crab or a whole white fish that was on the menu. I don't recall what kind of fish it was. Ultimately I chose the softshell crab, and was so delighted at how large the order was for such an amazing price. I ordered the white clam chowder, for my soup, I ordered the twice baked potato, and of course the softshell crab. To my delight I got three softshell crabs broccoli and cauliflower baked potato and the soup for just $34. Might I add I chose to have my softshell crab soaked in garlic butter. if you're considering coming here be sure to stop by because you get your bang for your buck and the food is delicious read more
