Proper 21 has typically been one of my go-to lunch spots, and I've had consistently good experiences in the past. This visit, though, landed at about a solid 3.5 stars for me. I stopped in for a quick weekday lunch with my son and was deciding between the smash burger (my usual) and the pappardelle bolognese. After asking for a recommendation, I was steered toward the pasta--so I decided to switch things up and give it a try. While the pasta itself was flavorful, the portion size was surprisingly small--closer to a cup-sized serving--for $23. It looked like a toddler meal. In comparison, the burger, priced similarly, was much bigger. Both dishes tasted great, but the value just didn't match up with the pasta. I ended up leaving still a bit hungry, which isn't something I've experienced here before. Because of that, I'd recommend sticking with the burger--it's the better choice for both portion and overall satisfaction. read more

We had our Company Christmas Party here. It was such a beautiful venue. It was very classy lots if mirrors and great bar. They served the appetizers for us and it was all amazing. Especially the smoke salmon with cucumber and cream cheese. Amazing. The chicken wings were great, the salmon tacos was good. Tiny Burgers are okay for me. We also had some drinks and the margaritas were amazing the Blonde Bartender ( i am so sorry i did not get her name) was so beautiful and gorgeous and she was so nice and she even took our pictures for the the whole company to be in that photo. Important to note, this place opens at 11:30am and serves happy hour by 2:30pm...If you're in the mood for an early start to the end of day, it's worth giving this a try. Not kid friendly so focus only on the adults and feel free to secure a table for friends, a date, or coworkers. The ambiance is simply beautiful and their outside seating looked worth the try (we stayed indoors) Food: - Truffle fries (not pictured) but not worth the time. The fries had a really strong garlic aftertaste that lingered in my mouth and made my wine taste bitter. I had to reset my tastebuds by trying something sweet which now leads to the wings. - Proper wings (pictured) Korean flavored. These wings were delicious and a bit sweet! Wells reasoned and nicely portioned. I could have enjoyed two more orders of these and still feel unsatisfied because the wings were just that good. - Dessert: skillet cookie with vanilla ice cream (pictured) Warm and tasty but slightly burnt at the bottom. But, it did not take away from this perfect end to my wings enjoyment and wine. They do offer a good wine selection and their mixed drinks looked worth the try. The manager is a disaster. He has no clue. His bartenders and guests had no idea why he decided to call the cops on me smoking my vape outside on the empty balcony, no customers whatsoever. I came here on a Sunday for lunch. It was easy to make a reservation and wasn't too packed upon arrival. We ordered the truffle Caesar salad to start. It was yummy. The grilled chicken wasn't seasoned AT ALL, but the dressing was very flavorful enough for the dish. The truffles were a nice touch too. The salmon was also a hit and had lots of flavor. The smash burger was just okay. To me, it was overhyped by our server. I didn't taste the cherry pepper jam or horseradish aioli that it says in the description. The fries were good though. I could have ate just those and been very satisfied. The proper churro waffle for dessert was the perfect ending to the meal. I attended a galantine's dinner with a group of women and although we had a good time, our service was quite slow and not as accurate for each attendee as I would have liked. The music was fantastic but loud enough that we had to elevate our voices often. The servers and manager were all very nice, just slow kitchen service. My short rib entree and Brussel sprouts were delicious. Another friend at our table had the truffle fries and mussels which she loved. Artwork was also very nice, totally picture-worthy. Proper 21 offers a fun and trendy atmosphere with plenty of TVs and cute decor, perfect for catching the game or snapping an Instagram pic. The truffle Caesar salad was a fun and different spin on a salad that's on every menu. The birra eggrolls were a delightful surprise, packed with flavor and not something I expected to be as good as they were. The meat was flavorful, the sauce was great, and the outside eggroll was crispy. The flatbreads were mediocre at best; I tried three on the menu and they weren't anything special. They could improve their nonalcoholic beverage options, but I did enjoy the fruity spritz they gave me when I asked if they could make anything nonalcoholic. The cocktails were fun and inventive, especially the Matcha cocktail. Service was a bit slow, but it was a Friday night and it started getting more crowded towards the end of our reservation because of a basketball game. We ended up having to pay at the bar after waiting over 10 minutes for our waitress to return mostly because we had to leave for a show. Price-wise, it's on the higher side considering the food quality, but it's conveniently located near GW. It was good for a happy hour that my company paid for, but I probably wouldn't go there myself again. They had a bunch of large tables so it was good for larger groups and they took reservations without problems. read more

Great place for drinks at the bar or for dinner with friend or significant others. We had the truffle fries, birria eggrolls, truffle mac and cheese and I had the smash burger and the proper churro waffle. My colleagues really liked the truffle fries, I ABSOLUTELY LOVEVD the birria eggrolls. Lots of flavor and very filling. The truffle mac and cheese is a pass for me. A bit watery and not a ton of flavor - would not recommend. The smash burger was pretty good - I would order again. I HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend the churro waffle. Great food , horrible service. We were in DC for one day, wanted to try this spot because a friend recommended it. Highly disappointed. We even sat at the bar because it was a Saturday night and wanted to have a few cocktails & a meal. Food was great but even at the bar. not once did the bartender ask if everything was ok or if we needed something. Waited over ten min just to get some ketchup for my fries & ended up just eating it like that . Then she took my fork with the appetizer plate, so I had to wait and get her attention to ask for another so I can eat the short rib. Then waited about 15 minutes with an empty drink & I just wanted to leave after that. ALL because the bartender with the sleeve tattoo was talking about her step dad & mom issues with another guy at the bar. Never again. For the price you pay, you'd expect it to be a bit better, insane even the manager was out fixing something at the computer and didn't ask any one else at the bar if they needed anything. There was a couple besides us that was talking about the service & asked for the check because they couldn't get her attention either & another guy besides just kept shaking his head waiting for some kind of service as well. read more

Most attendees had never visited either location before, and they were impressed. The event surpassed expectations due to the exceptional service and lively atmosphere. We had 200+ there last night and Eric / Selam did an absolute amazing job facilitating the event and making sure everything was perfect. My friends and I stopped in wanting to experience happy hour for my first time. We were seated inside as it appeared they had their outdoor seating reserved for an event. We shared an order of the truffle fries amongst our happy hour wines and house mixed drink. I made a concoction of tequila, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and seltzer. It was good enough to order an additional two rounds worth. French fries had a crispy outside and fluffy inside, a perfect carbohydrate to absorb the alcohol. Went to Proper 21 K with 3 girlfriends for the social brunch experience. We definitely received an experience, but it wasn't a good one. The decor and layout was really nice and pretty. However, the customer service was extremely disappointing. Our waitress was Mary Ellen and she was rude and slow. They strictly adhere to a 90 minute seating time but yet our bottomless mimosa cups were empty very often and we had to keep hunting her down for refills. We even had to wait 20 minutes for water refills. Other tables complained about her as well and lucky for them they had their wait staff switched. The brunch experience is broken down into 3 parts: 1. First they bring out the shared plates which consists of a bread basket, a cheese/meat plate and potatoes. 2. You get a ticket to build your own benedict. 3. You get to order a brunch entrée from the waitress. The first set of shared plates came out fairly quickly. The bennie station had a good variety of food and the line moved fairly quickly. However, 45 minutes in we had to once again summon the waitress to take our entrée order. Instead of addressing my friend, she reached over her to verify our time card on the table and then decided to take our order. Even if our time was running short, she never came to take our entrée order so what were they going to do put us out before we finished eating? Eventually, enough was enough and we had to call for the manager. He attempted to rectify the situation by providing excuses instead of results. Supposedly, they were short staffed. If so, then they probably should have prioritized the reservations over the walk ins. He told us not to worry about the time. Our time slot ended at 2:16, brunch ended at 2:30, the waitress brought out bill at 2:14. She cashed in a non deserved 20% mandatory gratuity. We were allowed to stay at the table but only was provided one round of mimosa refill during that time. Looks like a fellow Yelper was there on the same day and had the same type of experience. I wouldn't recommend them for their brunch experience. Save your time and your money. read more
