We are always up to try bbq when we are traveling, and were recommended to eat here by our Airbnb. Unfortunately the food wasn't that great-my husband's chicken had a fair amount of gristle in it, and the bbq sauce was nothing too exciting. We were surprised at how bland the bbq beans were-not much flavor. Wouldn't recommend-which is too bad, we like to support local business. I would give this place no stars if Yelp would allow it. Customer service was horrible! The lady rolled her eyes and caught an attitude when asking for a fork to go with my to-go meal. While cooking the food, the lady answered the phone and told a potential customer that they were closed (still had 1 hour left until closing). The Mac n cheese had an odd smell and tasted as if it was sitting for days, the brisket was soggy and very chewy. In the past I have only written 4 star reviews, anything else was not worthy of a second visit. This place however; has prompted me with the first 1 star review. At first glance my experience was yes, yes, yes. Stacks of firewood next to the giant black smoker in the back of the building. The smell of smoke filled the air and the food is served on a parchment paper. My plate arrived, long wait, with rib tip meat stacked in the middle, sweet corn wrapped in aluminum foil to hot to touch, and 2 corn muffin cakes. The Experience: Shortcuts, meat tasted like unseasoned old freezer burned meat that defiantly was not fresh. The sauce which is very good, was used to try to cover the freezer burn taste however; since I stopped smoking 5 years ago my taste buds are super sensitive. The corn was perfect however; the corn muffins were dried out and over cooked. Tough to bite and took the moisture out of my mouth. Very disappointing that they are using old and freezer burned meat as the only other competition is Texas Road House. Location, portions, and presentation is great however; fall short on the execution. read more

First of all, we are not food snobs. Fast food has a place in our lives. We really wanted this place to be good. We were also enticed by the smoker outside but the day we went it wasn't being used at the time. We wondered if that would mean we were going to get some reheated food. Unfortunately, the answer was yes. The prices are a little high but not outrageous. The Mac-n-Cheese was microwave reheated and not tasty. The cornbread was both chewy and dry. First time here. I've lived in the Deep South and ate BBQ three times a week, and I've traveled around the country eating BBQ in every region. Today I ordered the spare ribs and beans. Beans were very good with just enough spice and cooked perfectly. Spare ribs were exactly the right kind of tender and the meat had a good smoky flavor. Sauce was a bit bland for my taste but still good, (I prefer sweeter and spicier). It takes hours to smoke ribs properly and it's difficult to keep them from drying out before they get served. Well, Down Home BBQ did it right. I will be returning to try more items and will update this review. read more

I had the pulled pork & really liked that they put some burnt ends in there, very yummy also my sides were fried okra & hush puppies, not only tasty but large portions! This is legitimately the best place to eat in Sierra Vista! A lot of places have come and gone claiming to be BBQ places or having BBQ on the menu but they never quite hit it out of the park until now. Down Home BBQ is the best bang for your buck, for 2 people to eat like kings it usually runs about $23 and boy is it worth it! The staff is friendly and quick to get your order up and on your table! As for the environment, it is clean and has a very classic and classy style about it. Never again! I went here yesterday (Monday) evening after work for a take out dinner. This was my second visit to Down Home BBQ. The first visit was on a Saturday afternoon and the food was decent. I again ordered a half order of pork ribs w/the sauce on the side. On the way home I kept smelling a burnt odor. When I tried to cut into the ribs they did not cut, they splintered, they were very overcooked and had obviously been re-heated multiple times. Out of 5 ribs there was a smal one on the end that was actually chewable. I ordered the mac & cheese as a side and it was an overpeppered (I love pepper) packaged Kraft knockoff. With Dickie's BBQ in town I will never again make the error of choosing convenience (proximity) when it comes to my BBQ. Very discouraging and disappointing. What a hidden gem. We were promptly greeted with a warm welcome by the owner. Our meals were cooked to order - everything was hot & fresh. The servings were very generous (I couldn't finish mine). I had the pulled pork and pulled chicken with the house beans - it was all delicious. You know the BBQ will be good when there is a pile of mesquite wood outside. The service staff were friendly and helpful with questions about the menu. The portions are large and cooked to order. We had a 1/2 chicken, 2 brisket meals, and pulled pork sub with sides of cornbread, greens, cabbage, and corn on the cob. Everyone was extremely pleased with their meals. The meat was tender and juicy and the sauces accompanied well. The mustard sauce is tangy and sweet. I enjoyed the spicy BBQ although it wasn't spicy. Oh and the sweet tea is made right! This place is great for take out. The brisket is fantastic and so is the chicken. The sides are nothing great, but the meat is fantastic. It's a dive inside - I went in one day at lunch time and there were no lights in the dining area, so take out. The smell of BBQ caught our attention when we were searching for another restaurant on Saturday. The "other" place wasn't open for lunch so it was Down Home BBQ! The owners are friendly and serve up fantastic food. We were expecting little sandwiches on regular buns and were quite surprised to get foot long subs on toasted bread with wonderful BBQ meat spilling out. One chicken. One pork. "Girl Scout Style", he told us. We wanted mild sauce! Both excellent and we loved the bread. Great brewed iced tea made for a perfect lunch spot. I hope these guys do well. NOT GOING BACK FOR SURE! I We saw bad reviews on yelp before we went there. But we want to give a chance to family owned local business so we went there. I ordered BBQ chicken which I thought was dried quartered BBQ chicken but it turned out pulled chicken mixed with BBQ sauce. It tasted as if it was leftover pulled rotisserie chicken mixed with BBQ sauce and heated up in the microwave (which I would usually make it at home when I have leftover and lazy to cook). Beef briskets was a joke, and it was not even close to brisket (my boyfriend said it should be rated as zero star for brisket). Baby back ribs was edible, will give one star for that. They don't even give us free slices of bread (if you have been to Rudy's BBQ you know what I mean). Collard green and corn on the cob was edible, We spent about $34 including the tips (ordered one order of two meats and one side and one order of half a rack of baby ribs with corn on the cob with just one drink). I can go to Rudy's and get plenty of meat, bread, and sides with their generous complimentary bread (which I usually asked them to give me us four slices instead of half a loaf of bread) for $27 for two and we can bring the left over home. I know I am not in Texas but did not expect this place to be this bad. Also there was one other customer there, he took his chicken back to the counter and said the chicken was raw and he said to us that "the food here is so bad", while we were waiting for our food to come out. They have other choices in their menu so if you want to give them a chance, try the other stuffs but not briskets or BBQ chicken. read more

Our food was served on a tray with no basket or plate, like they were skimping on everything. Napkins were cheap and didn't hold up. Inside of the building is hot and the lights weren't even turned on. Staff was rude and everything cooking was hidden behind a big wall. I won't be coming back. Worst BBQ I've ever had in my life. The ribs were so burnt that the meat was as hard as the bone. The deli meat (brisket) wasn't evenly heated, and lacked any hint of being barbecued. Imagine our surprise when the not-too-friendly order-taker with the pink "LOVE" shirt charged us $12.99. We questioned it, but she insisted, so we paid. In retrospect, we should have told her to keep it and gone elsewhere for lunch. It was OK BBQ... what there was of it.... but it was a pretty skimpy serving. The restaurant is pretty typical for a small Arizona town BBQ and seats approx 30. At 7:30pm, I was the only patron and resisted the urge to leave. There was no music, The TV was off, and the kitchen eerily quiet, and I still didnt leave. I was greeted by a petite Korean woman at which time I knew this would be no ordinary dining experience. I ordered a half rack of beef ribs (4 bones) and beef brisket. Neither was fresh off the fire. The beef ribs were dry, pretty tough, but not hateful. They were very short, however. The sauce made up for the shortcomings! Spicey with a touch of sweetness...very similar to Rudy's. The beans were Bland, ranch style with almost no flavor. The potato salad was OK.
