I really was in the mood for Breakfast for Lunch today and knew only of Mollys which I've been to a few times in the Reading Terminal Market, or to try the Down Home Diner also in the RTM. Today, my friend and I went to the Down Home Diner. The diner has been in the RTM for what seems like forever, and unfortunately the look of the diner also seems quite run down and uninviting. Booths line the outsides of the space, tables in the middle, and the kitchen is across the corridor for customers to enter and exit the RTM. There's also some counter seating on that side. We were seated quickly after the staff checked the bent silverware for spots, and gave us the paper menus which I posted. When our orders were taken, we were told only one side of the menu was available. DHD has all your breakfast favorites like pancakes, eggs, bacon, and some nice lunch selections like cheesesteak and fried chicken sandwich. Lots of sides and desserts are available. I went with the scramble bowl which has two eggs, sausage, peppers, melted cheddar, onion, and what they say is hash browned potatoes, but were really potato pieces. I really enjoyed it. Quite filling. I asked for the potatoes to be well done, and they were not. The biscuit was excellent! My friend had the crispy chicken sandwich and subbed her regular fries for the bacon ranch fries which were listed as a separate choice on the menu. They were the shoestring fries with an ok amount of bacon and their homemade ranch dressing. She said it tasted pretty good but definitely not worth the upcharge of a few dollars for the amount received. Additionally, the fried chicken sandwich was also just ok and seemed like two chicken fingers put on a roll. She said it was quite dry. They also gave her some lettuce and tomato on the side. Service was friendly but not too outgoing. Very soft spoken and almost couldn't understand her in the somewhat loud restaurant. $31 not including tip for two entrees with an upgrade to the side of fries, and two homemade unsweetened iced teas. $3 each for them but unlimited refills. Not too sure I'd come back, but I'd recommend a total renovation for the dining room to make it more dynamic and exciting. read more

This is inside the Reading Terminal. Lots of places to choose from, but we chose this place. Had a nice set of windows to watch out and service was relatively quick. Price was reasonable. I ordered the barnyard breakfast (scrapple, eggs, biscuit.) This was the first time I've had scrapple and I didn't hate it, but I'd never order it again haha I think it's an acquired taste for sure. Almost reminded me of Spam, but with a more grainy texture. I ended up getting food poisoning later this day and I'm almost certain it was from the scrapple because my travel companion ate exactly the same thing all trip except for that. read more

Out of the three breakfast spots we tried in Reading Terminal Market, this was by far the best. Plenty of seating and they have their own bathroom, so you don't have to wander around the market looking for a place to wash your hands. Service was attentive. I had the Uncle Bunk's Breakfast Bargain (two pancakes, two eggs and a side of breakfast meat) with a side of cheesy grits and an up charge for REAL maple syrup. My better half had the Southern Omelet. Both of our plates were packed with food. My pancakes were HUGE. I could hardly finish my plate, never mind help my better half with hers (which is what I usually do). I would definitely get breakfast here again when I'm back in downtown Philadelphia. read more

We were here on a Saturday morning around 10am. This restaurant is located in the Reading terminal market. I had a couple of restaurants in my list : one for Scrapple and the other for roast pork sandwich. I was lucky to try them both. Scrapple is a local Philly food made of all the scraps of a pig. It does not sound enticing but when cooked right it's extremely delicious. I had scrapple from Down Home Diner. This place is pretty crowded. I waited in line for 15 mins to get seated. I finally got my scrapple after 30 mins wait. Although people like it with maple syrup I personally prefer the ketchup. Roast pork sandwich at Dinic's sandwich place was really good too. They also have so many other regular breakfast options such as eggs, bacon, pancakes, French toast and fruits. Service was phenomenal. Although it was pretty crowded the sever made a great effort in checking with time to time. I would definitely recommend you to try out their Scrapple if you done so yet. Down Home Diner was very clean well staffed and had an inviting, friendly and helpful feel. The menu is small and reasonably priced. Today there was a breakfast special of steak and eggs with asparagus. I ordered a chocolate croissant, it was very flaky and light but had only a tiny bit of chocolate in it. Stopping in on a Saturday morning for breakfast before our road trip and was pleasantly greeted by the staff. Our food was brought out quickly and to order. We ate all our food and had no complaints Kid had scrambled eggs which he loved. I had scrambled eggs w home fries which I also enjoyed. Loved the chunks of fresh potatoes. This is around the 8th and last time going to Down Home Diner at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. While the food is good, the service is atrocious compared to other local establishments. I've never seen such lack of regard for the customer. Today, I asked for a substitution, and the young lady (short dark hair) said "sure" and didn't mention anything about an uncharge. She seemed so friendly. However, after the meal, I was presented with a major up-charge for ordering a different vegetable because of an allergy I had informed her about when ordering. When I questioned it, she suddenly became angry and defensive and took my photo! I was speaking to her softly and politely, but she continued to be argumentative and told me just to not pay at all. She also spoke to a colleague about me. I went to the counter and insisted I pay and she reluctantly charged me. I never wish to leave without paying. I've had similar bad service at this establishment in the past. Instead of going to Down Home Diner, I recommend the Amish run "Dutch Eating Place" nearby. They are the sweetest people who will bend over backward to ensure your satisfaction. Perhaps the owner can observe this competitor and offer better service. There is often a very long line for the Dutch Eating Place. I know why. read more

I sat down to eat before I saw the ratings on this place but I'm glad I did because my experience was pretty great! I sat at the counter and was immediately greeted in a friendly manner. I ordered my seltzer and cheesesteak and received everything quickly. My meal was very satisfying. The fries were excellent (although I would have preferred a larger order) and the cheese steak was cheesy and oniony, just the way I like it. Also, the roll they used was delicious! If it's a huge party you'll be waiting awhile. I can't remember the name of what I had but it was eggs, toast, bacon and home fries. Well here I sit at the counter of Down Home Diner in the Reading Terminal Market in Philly. I've visited the Market all week and have passed by the Diner. Today I decided to try it out and I'm mad that I haven't been here earlier. The food is fresh, nothing frozen, bought locally and just awesome. I had the Black Eyed Pea Soup (made from scratch) and the Hot Ham Pimento Cheese sandwich with sweet potato salad. Nothing left on my plate... An unassuming looking diner with a great menu, friendly atmosphere and great cooking. We stopped in for breakfast/brunch at the end of our weekend in Philly. Although the diner itself is an extension of the Reading Terminal Market (as opposed to a separate establishment), it still feels very self-contained, and the staff's friendliness contributes to the feeling. We each got two eggs (over easy) with grits and home fries, one with bacon, the other with turkey sausage. On the side, we each got a single Pumpkin Flapjack, since we are so close to Thanksgiving at that point. The pumpkin flapjacks are delicious, the eggs and grits well prepared as well.
