We started with their popular lava lava shrimp. It was yummy, but a little heavy. We also ordered the Brussels sprouts, which came with like 6 half sized sprouts for $9, not worth it! I ordered the macadamia nut crusted mahi, which made not mention on the menu that it was fried, and it was fried! It was dry and not very good, pass on this. Pretty cool place, sitting outside was nice. The lava lava shrimp had so much flavor and just the right amount of crispness. Fries were good, fish was great. The jalapeño watermelon drink (non alcoholic) was super fresh, you can tell it's real watermelon and not the artificial syrup type. Came here after a day trip to Lanai. It was a perfect place to have an early dinner! It was shaded and had a large fan that kept a nice cool breeze. They had a couple TVs to watch the Laker game which was nice. We came during HH and the mai tais were strong and very delicious. Started our dinner with the lava lava shrimp which was very tasty. We have been going here ever since it was on DDD. This place makes all their stuff from scratch and it shows. The food is amazing. Now they are so popular that their is a line all the time out to the sidewalk. Pretty amazing they keep the line moving. This time we waited about 15 minutes in line and we ordered our food. I would definitely recommend getting the lava lava shrimp here! Crispy and juicy shrimp with an amazing tangy but a little spicy sauce was perfect to go along with a happy hour drink. They were however out of their macadamia crusted fish, if that's something you want you have to get there early. My dad had the spicy watermelon margarita but said there wasn't much watermelon, mostly spicy. All of the food we had was good and fresh. The line was a little longer than we expected (630p on a Sunday), but realized the restaurant was on Food Network DDD at some point, so perhaps that was a contributing factor? The Lilikoi Basil Martini was super good, but unfortunately they were out of basil (no biggie!). The Sampler Platter was perfect since we were indecisive, and at $24, it was a good value for what you get! The kalua pork quesadilla was jam packed with delicious meat, and the calamari strips were very well cooked. The Lava Lava shrimp was the highlight of the platter! Super crispy, a great portion, and a touch spicy. The dipping sauce on the platter was craveable too! We also got an order of Bacon n Brussels, which you can get fried or grilled. We did fried, and it was RICH! Given our platter, we probs should've gone grilled, bit love and learn, right? We also ordered the Lava Lava Shrimp Tacos, because naturally our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. The shrimps were just as delicious, the tortilla was slightly grilled and the perfect vessel to hold it all in (mango salsa was OMG good). During our 4 days in Maui, we came here a lot. We always have a big group and Down the Hatch can accommodate multiple big groups. Environment: It has a huge open seating area. They also have karaoke at Monday nights. It's really nice way to hang outdoor with friends. One downside is that they close at 10pm and usually by 8 pm, you won't be able to find seating. Food: I think it's pretty good. I love the lobster and grill cheese. That's the best! I also recommend mermaid fries. Personally, the fish taco was good, but the size of the taco is bigger than I expected. Not a big issue, still delicious, it's just harder to eat. We loved Down the Hatch so much ate dinner that we woke up the next morning and came back for brunch! Haha. And we were SO GLAD WE DID!! LOCATION: Outdoor patio and bar, converted into full restaurant, Down the Hatch has a cool vibe and is definitely a popular spot off of Front St. There is a handy little light-up sign right as you enter that changes color to give you an idea of how long you'll wait for your food (Blue: 5-10 minute wait) which is great to quickly glance at if you're feeling hungrier than the wait listed. We went when it was somewhat cloudy and did find a spot under some shelter and sure enough it started to rain and most of the tables got up and were searching for a covered spot. Just keep the weather in mind! FOOD/SERVICE: Quick-counter service type of place, but everyone we spoke too was super friendly and well-versed in the menu for the questions we had. DINNER: For our first stop for dinner, we had Lava Lava Shrimp Tacos and the Seasonal Poke. We LOVED LOVED LOVED the shrimp tacos. We literally talked about them for days!! And seasonal poke was good, but it felt quite heavy on the sauce which kind of overshadowed the fish. I really wanted to like this place when I visited for vacation when I was in town. Although staff was friendly and very accommodating, the food was a bit lackluster. We opted for their special of the day, which was Poke served with a side of fritters and aioli. The bluefin tuna was fresh, but the fritters didn't really add to the dish. We also got a sample platter to try out the various offerings, but it didn't pack the flavors I was craving. The friend shrimp didn't taste freshly made, and the calamari was a bit soggy. I saw that this place was featured on Diner's Driveway and Dives show... I'm not a big television watcher, but I'm pretty sure this place must've gained some street credit to be featured on that show. We ordered the lobster and crab grilled cheese, blackened fish tacos, and lava lava shrimp, and everything was pretty decent. I really liked the lava lava shrimp, which were small shrimps that were breaded, fried, and topped with the lava lava sauce, which tasted like a more mild and sweeter version of spicy mayo. The pickled onion on top also added nice freshness and acidity. My favorite was definitely the fish tacos, as the fish came coated in a really flavorful seasoning and was nice and tender, and was complimented really well by the lava lava sauce. I do wish it had come with a bit more salsa though, and the chips on the side were pretty bland. The lobster and crab grilled cheese was decent, but I probably wouldn't order it again. It had a nice amount of lobster and crab filling, but didn't taste super freshly made. Overall, definitely a great option if you're looking for a more casual dining spot in the area. read more

Came during happy hour which is from 2-5 pm. We ordered our food at the counter, got a number, and grabbed a table. There was live music playing. A young man who was playing the guitar and singing on 12/9/22 was really good! I didn't catch his name unfortunately. Our drinks and food came out pretty quickly. My girls and I shared the lava lava shrimp appetizer, lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese, and cantina pig plate. We loved the shrimp, it was a good amount and had a great sweet and tangy creamy mayo like flavor. Literally an explosion in your mouth. So good. The lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese was a 10/10. I've never had one like it.. it was so flavorful and is made in buttery toasted Hawaiian sweet bread, it had a good amount of the lobster and crab. It also came with shoestring fries that were really good too. The cantina pig plate wasn't our favorite and lacked flavor a bit in our opinion. The salad was the best thing on that plate. But anyway, do yourself a favor and come here whenever you're in Maui. The ambiance and location is great. Staff was attentive and friendly. And get the lava lava shrimp appetizer and lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese. I'm already looking forward to when I get to go back! read more
