Typical bar food. Overpriced, underwhelmed. It's in "downtown" Laihana, so there's lots of happening spot around. Cute shops, restaurants, dessert shops. My niece had RAVED about Down the Hatch. I feel like it's probably the most talked place she mentioned when she went to Maui. So I was super excited to try it. It's part of this quartyard where there are other dining establishments and you order at the counter and they'll bring it to your number, open seating. The menu looked good, but once food was delivered, it was just greasy bar food. Calamari were like fish sticks, lava shrimp was hardly shrimpy, my husband enjoyed the quesadillas. The infamous crab and lobster sandwich was SO SO greasy. It was alll oil. My kids would barely eat their chicken fingers/fries, but it could just be my kids. Recommend you get in line before you are too hungry, because it was about 20 mins in line, and another 45 minutes until we got our food. After 2pm, you work with a waitress to get a table. For breakfast and brunch you choose your own. The atmosphere is outdoors, and there's a fun pond full of koi fish swimming. Food highlights: the shrimp in the sampler platter, the sweet bread in the lobster and crab grilled cheese. My mom couldn't eat the ahi tuna unfortunately, because it was too sour - cannot confirm nor deny, but wouldn't ding them for it. I was told they are working on it now after looking puzzled. Like our order was cleared. This makes sense as the tables around us had gotten their appetizers and then their food shortly after before we had anything. Quesadillas are not great and covered in a sauce making them hard to eat with hands. Wife ordered the fish tacos. At a glance it looked great but the fish were boring and bland. We came here due to happy hour. The drinks were just ok, I didn't like the Lava Flow, weak in flavor. My kids liked the virgin Piña colada. The food was just mediocre. The mahi-mahi was tough due to overcooked and also lacked in flavors, barely tasted miso flavor or salt on a fish dish that was called miso glazed. The pork quesadilla was missing a good sauce (salsa) to give it a WOW factor, the mango salsa that came with it was bland, and didn't pair well. We came here during our stay in Maui and loved the atmosphere, which is outdoors downstairs. There is a line as you're walking down to order food, and then you take a number and wait for your food. Our food took a while to get to us, probably around 20-30 minutes, but it wasn't too bad. We ordered the Lava Lava Shrimp, a fish sandwich with fries, and crispy fish tacos that came with tortilla chips. Their food is on the spicier side, since the sauce on the fish tacos were spicy, as was the sauce on the lava lava shrimp. The lava lava shrimp was tender and had a lot of sauce on it, yet it managed to stay crispy, which was nice. The fish sandwich according to my partner was very very good -- fresh and cooked to perfection, which was medium rare just as he requested. The fish tacos were also very good -- crispy but I wish they put it on corn tortillas instead of flour (didn't taste as authentic). I think the only mediocre thing that we had here was the salsa that came with the fish tacos and chips -- it tasted like it was from a can and not very authentic. My partner enjoyed the Mai Thai as well. Overall we enjoyed our visit here, though the staff could have been more consistent/friendly about who they tell to wear their mask as they are walking to/from the water machine or restrooms (I found that they didn't tell everyone who got up maskless). Important information to know, since I was a bit confused: We got into a long line in front of the restaurant. When you walk closer to the stairs, you can see a sign lit up with different colors that will tell you the expected wait time after you place your order. The sign was green when we were there, which indicates a 20-25min wait time. I think we spent 15min in line + 25min waiting for food at our table. Food: - Lava lava shrimp: A small portion of small perfectly crisp battered shrimp was laid on a bed of cabbage. We asked for the lava lava sauce on the side just in case it was too spicy. We got this dish for free using a coupon our hotel gave us so can't complain about price, but it was small for the price if you had to pay for it. - Crispy fish tacos: Giant battered shrimp on flour tortilla drizzled with lava lava sauce and sweet chunks of mango. I really liked the blend of flavors.It came with tortilla chips that were stale, which ruined the dish, they should have just left them off the plate. - Fish and chips: The tartar sauce had the right amount of tang. The fish was coated in a crisp batter. The thin fries were delicious, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned. Portion size was hearty. I actually had to save one of the fish sticks for leftovers, and it did not taste good when reheated. It is the type of place that you order before sitting down and then grab your own drinks and utensils so nothing fancy, however, we thought our food was good and the drinks were fun. We got lucky with the wait here. It took us only ~10 minutes to order a find a seat at around 11 AM. Many of those behind us had to wait 15-20 minutes. Everything was great! The lava lava shrimp tacos had a great tangy flavor that came from the sauce. The mango/ pepper blend on top was fresh. I particularly liked the tacos; the fish in it tasted so fresh and delicious and the flavors from the sauces and toppings complemented the fish so well. The tacos were really good on its own, but if you like spicy food, I definitely recommend adding Tabasco to it because it elevated the tacos to the next level to me. The lava lava chicken sandwich was huge! Even though it was supposed to be spicy, I didn't really taste much spice. Despite this, it was still really good and the lava lava sauce was delicious. The ambiance here is pretty cool as it's an indoor/outdoor restaurant. They have a fish pond around the tables which was a feature that I liked because I enjoyed watching the fish swim around next to me as I ate my meal. It is a pretty casual restaurant where you just put your order in, choose any available table, and have your food brought to you. We didn't receive much service here outside of when we put in our order for food, but the waitress taking our order was nice. I definitely got down at Down the Hatch! As an avid happy hour goer, finding a happy hour on my vacation is a must! Since my friend and I were exploring West Maui we thought it would be fun to sit down, take in the sunny day, and sip and eat some small bites at a nice eatery. The ordering system was straightforward. You walk up to the cashier, place your order, pay, find a table, and have your food delivered! For drinks, you have to order at the bar separately. It didn't take too long for our food or drinks to come. Service was friendly and the bartender was helpful, straight forward, and we received everything in a timely fashion. We did appreciate the accommodations they made for us! Down to Hatch's happy hour menu entails a discount on certain appetizers and drinks. Since my friend and I already ate lunch beforehand we weren't too hungry. The utensils, dishes, water, and condiments are all self-serve. We ended up ordering the Crispy Calamari to share and some libations. The calamari came as steaks, not rings which were different! The sweet Thai chili and Tartar sauce that came with it was a balanced sweet and savory pairing. We thought the calamari tasted good--plump pieces and a nice portion. I have eaten here a few time in the last few years. Always a good vibe here. Today we were there at happy hour time. Hubby a Mai Tai ( actually 2), I had a Lava flow, both very good and $7. Each. Bargain! The mahi plate was melt in your mouth yum. It was pretty busy but the line went quickly and we got our order quickly as well. There was a singer that had everyone entertained. I have mixed review on this restaurant. Hubby's lobster and crab grilled cheese sandwich is 5 stars. My shrimp taco was 3 stars at best. Service was slow, but I think there was a shortage of staff. You also have to get your own utensils and condiments on the side, which was not well marked. So I would rate the service as 2 or 3 stars. I enjoyed listening to the live music. Pretty cool place, sitting outside was nice. The lava lava shrimp had so much flavor and just the right amount of crispness. Fries were good, fish was great. The jalapeño watermelon drink (non alcoholic) was super fresh, you can tell it's real watermelon and not the artificial syrup type. The cashier was knowledgeable with all the menu items and helped narrow down my choices. Probably one of my favorite places I've tried in Maui. read more

FINALLY! I had been eying this place since our last Maui trip - we didn't get the chance to go as it's always so packed and we had time constraints. We went early in the AM shortly after they opened and they were already packed! You line up on the stairs and order before you seat yourself. We were able to get a able easily. We got a carafe of Bloody Mary which made for about 4-5 pours. So good! We shared the omelet and loco moco. Omelette - YUM! The lava fish is to die for. Definitely do the fried rice as it's made with pork belly and beyond flavorful. Man, now I want to eat this again! Loco moco - southern style, and just ok. Under seasoned so had to add hot sauce and salt. I didn't care for the potatoes that it was served with. I should have asked for the fried rice substitute! We can't wait to go back on our next trip. read more
