We came here due to happy hour. The drinks were just ok, I didn't like the Lava Flow, weak in flavor. My kids liked the virgin Piña colada. The food was just mediocre. The mahi-mahi was tough due to overcooked and also lacked in flavors, barely tasted miso flavor or salt on a fish dish that was called miso glazed. The pork quesadilla was missing a good sauce (salsa) to give it a WOW factor, the mango salsa that came with it was bland, and didn't pair well. Line out to the street, one of the most reviewed places in Maui... and now I know why. We waited in line for around 30 minutes but worth every minute. They have an open seating area that is very lively and good for people watching. At certain times, they have live music and the musician was really good! Now let's talk about the food. It was "Down" right DELICIOUS! The best thing was the Lava Lava shrimp. It was an explosion in your mouth. Creamy, tangy and really good. Then the Captain's Catch was cooked perfectly. Important information to know, since I was a bit confused: We got into a long line in front of the restaurant. When you walk closer to the stairs, you can see a sign lit up with different colors that will tell you the expected wait time after you place your order. The sign was green when we were there, which indicates a 20-25min wait time. I think we spent 15min in line + 25min waiting for food at our table. Food: - Lava lava shrimp: A small portion of small perfectly crisp battered shrimp was laid on a bed of cabbage. We asked for the lava lava sauce on the side just in case it was too spicy. I thought it was just the right amount of spice, whereas my partner felt it was too spicy. To emphasize, this is a SMALL portion (see finger for scale in photo). We got this dish for free using a coupon our hotel gave us so can't complain about price, but it was small for the price if you had to pay for it. - Crispy fish tacos: Giant battered shrimp on flour tortilla drizzled with lava lava sauce and sweet chunks of mango. I really liked the blend of flavors.It came with tortilla chips that were stale, which ruined the dish, they should have just left them off the plate. - Fish and chips: The tartar sauce had the right amount of tang. The fish was coated in a crisp batter. The thin fries were delicious, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned. Portion size was hearty. I actually had to save one of the fish sticks for leftovers, and it did not taste good when reheated. Ambiance: We could hear live music while sitting at a table next to a koi pond with very playful fish (one koi kept jumping over the other ones, I have never seen that before). This is better than the food we've been eating on the Ovation of the Seas, which today the windjammer had no food for breakfast, so we are in port and find this place....if your into bad service , dirty tables , then this place is for you! It's part of this quartyard where there are other dining establishments and you order at the counter and they'll bring it to your number, open seating. The menu looked good, but once food was delivered, it was just greasy bar food. Calamari were like fish sticks, lava shrimp was hardly shrimpy, my husband enjoyed the quesadillas. The infamous crab and lobster sandwich was SO SO greasy. It was alll oil. My kids would barely eat their chicken fingers/fries, but it could just be my kids. Recommend you get in line before you are too hungry, because it was about 20 mins in line, and another 45 minutes until we got our food. After 2pm, you work with a waitress to get a table. For breakfast and brunch you choose your own. The atmosphere is outdoors, and there's a fun pond full of koi fish swimming. We came here during our stay in Maui and loved the atmosphere, which is outdoors downstairs. There is a line as you're walking down to order food, and then you take a number and wait for your food. Our food took a while to get to us, probably around 20-30 minutes, but it wasn't too bad. We ordered the Lava Lava Shrimp, a fish sandwich with fries, and crispy fish tacos that came with tortilla chips. Their food is on the spicier side, since the sauce on the fish tacos were spicy, as was the sauce on the lava lava shrimp. The lava lava shrimp was tender and had a lot of sauce on it, yet it managed to stay crispy, which was nice. The fish sandwich according to my partner was very very good -- fresh and cooked to perfection, which was medium rare just as he requested. The fish tacos were also very good -- crispy but I wish they put it on corn tortillas instead of flour (didn't taste as authentic). I think the only mediocre thing that we had here was the salsa that came with the fish tacos and chips -- it tasted like it was from a can and not very authentic. My partner enjoyed the Mai Thai as well. Overall we enjoyed our visit here, though the staff could have been more consistent/friendly about who they tell to wear their mask as they are walking to/from the water machine or restrooms (I found that they didn't tell everyone who got up maskless). I had this place on my list because I heard it was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and it did not disappoint! My fiancé and I came for lunch and ordered the seared ahi tacos and the lava lava spicy chicken sandwich. The seared ahi tacos had seared cajun ahi, cabbage, wasabi aioli, pickled red onions, and green onions (I asked to exclude these as I'm not a fan of green onions). The lava lava spicy chicken sandwich had fried chicken, cheese, lava lava sauce, and ranch on Hawaiian sweet bread with a side of fries. Both our dishes were really really good! I particularly liked the tacos; the fish in it tasted so fresh and delicious and the flavors from the sauces and toppings complemented the fish so well. The tacos were really good on its own, but if you like spicy food, I definitely recommend adding Tabasco to it because it elevated the tacos to the next level to me. The lava lava chicken sandwich was huge! Even though it was supposed to be spicy, I didn't really taste much spice. Despite this, it was still really good and the lava lava sauce was delicious. The ambiance here is pretty cool as it's an indoor/outdoor restaurant. They have a fish pond around the tables which was a feature that I liked because I enjoyed watching the fish swim around next to me as I ate my meal. It is a pretty casual restaurant where you just put your order in, choose any available table, and have your food brought to you. We didn't receive much service here outside of when we put in our order for food, but the waitress taking our order was nice. It is the type of place that you order before sitting down and then grab your own drinks and utensils so nothing fancy, however, we thought our food was good and the drinks were fun. Once you find a seat, you place your number on the table and the food runners will bring your food to you. The food here is very well made. I definitely got down at Down the Hatch! As an avid happy hour goer, finding a happy hour on my vacation is a must! Since my friend and I were exploring West Maui we thought it would be fun to sit down, take in the sunny day, and sip and eat some small bites at a nice eatery. We ended up ordering the Crispy Calamari to share and some libations. The calamari came as steaks, not rings which were different! The sweet Thai chili and Tartar sauce that came with it was a balanced sweet and savory pairing. We thought the calamari tasted good--plump pieces and a nice portion. It was lightly battered, dense, mild, and tender (I wish it were crispier). The ambiance reminded me of an outdoor sports bar geared toward an older tourist crowd. The nice part about it being outside was that it was breezy, not too loud, but still high energy. We came about 10:15 specifically to get some brunch cocktails (highly recommend the Lahaina sunrise). They stop their breakfast menu strictly at 10:30, so we ordered another Lahaina sunrise right before the cut off (seriously, they're amazing). But this lobster and crab grilled cheese? It's everything you'd imagine and more. There were actual chunks of meat in there and it was so cheesy! This restaurant has interesting layout, it sits in the middle of a kind of strip mall. The food is always great here. They were however out of their macadamia crusted fish, if that's something you want you have to get there early. My dad had the spicy watermelon margarita but said there wasn't much watermelon, mostly spicy. All of the food we had was good and fresh. You order at the counter, receive a number and they bring you the food. There is usually a line up the stairs but it's worth the wait. read more

We loved Down the Hatch so much ate dinner that we woke up the next morning and came back for brunch! Haha. And we were SO GLAD WE DID!! LOCATION: Outdoor patio and bar, converted into full restaurant, Down the Hatch has a cool vibe and is definitely a popular spot off of Front St. There is a handy little light-up sign right as you enter that changes color to give you an idea of how long you'll wait for your food (Blue: 5-10 minute wait) which is great to quickly glance at if you're feeling hungrier than the wait listed. PRO TIP: This spot is MOSTLY uncovered. We went when it was somewhat cloudy and did find a spot under some shelter and sure enough it started to rain and most of the tables got up and were searching for a covered spot. Just keep the weather in mind! FOOD/SERVICE: Quick-counter service type of place, but everyone we spoke too was super friendly and well-versed in the menu for the questions we had. DINNER: For our first stop for dinner, we had Lava Lava Shrimp Tacos and the Seasonal Poke. We LOVED LOVED LOVED the shrimp tacos. We literally talked about them for days!! And seasonal poke was good, but it felt quite heavy on the sauce which kind of overshadowed the fish. We drank a Mai Tại (yummy!) and a Lava Flow (good, but I liked the Mai Tai better) and really enjoyed the evening. BRUNCH: Anddd Part Two! We loved DTH and were ready to checkout the brunch menu and HOLY YUM. The hubs ate Lava Lava Shrimp & Avocado Omelette (all the flavors were there, again Lava Lava Shrimp YES! However the eggs were a little over-cooked, but not a deal breaker) I ordered the Huevos Rancheros Monta-a and YOU NEED TO ORDER THIS. The flavors were soooo good. The tortilla was crunchy, the eggs were runny, and the sauce was quite-literally licked off my plate. OVERALL: We we're tempted to go back a third time but decided it best to give another restaurant a chance. Next time we're in Maui, we are for SURE coming back! read more
