Oddly enough, this deli made our trip to Acadia. The staff is so nice and even invited our dog inside and gave him a treat. The sandwiches are relatively simple but so tasty and satisfying. Perfect spot for lunch! We ate here a couple of times during our stay and it was great every time! We got the boxed lunches when we went kayaking and they are the perfect size and price for a meal on the go. We called ahead and they were always ready when we went to pick them up. At $14.95 a roll, you really can't go wrong with at least trying out a lobster roll at Downeat Deli. This is MUCH cheaper than anywhere you can ever get a decent lobster roll with actual whole claw meat and not mixed in with a ton of mayo or unnecessary veggies (although there is a leaf of lettuce here). With the super low price, it also comes with a pack of chips. WHAT? Yeah, that's right. Some crunch with your roll. The bun also is not heavily buttered which to some, it may be a good thing and less oily. They also have a pretty extensive menu but I didn't have time to look around since it closes at 4PM. Besides, I knew I wanted to try the lobster roll anyway. There are so many choices from sit down restaurants to small take out places at Bar Harbor. It can get extremely overwhelming trying to find a place that would really give you good value and taste good. We wanted to pack sandwiches the morning we left for a day of hiking, and these folks pointed us in the direction of a drugstore so we could get a little insulated cooler. They even packed a sealed container of ice along with our sammies, to try and ensure they'd be kept cold for us! Such great service, I made sure to stop in again during our stay. There's no space to dine in, but take your sandwich over to the Village Green, or down to the park in the harbor, and enjoy the weather. Sandwich-wise, I got the featured Thanksgiving sandwich which has turkey, cranberry, and stuffing, piled sky-high. Sadly, you are forced to order this sammie on white bread. It was yummy; but I would have loved it on wheat. I also found a blonde hair (not mine), which kept me from cleaning my plate. It came with a bag of Lays chips. On my second visit, I got the lobster roll. They do several versions, including one with a tarragon mayo, that had been enticing me all week. I was definitely disappointed with the bread. Echoing other reviewers here, it seemed like a hot dog roll, didn't appear to be toasted, and was an inferior vessel for the large chunks of fresh lobster and refreshing tarragon taste twist. I also grabbed one of their blueberry tarts -- resembles a turnover... fresh fruit in a flakey pastry. I told her if she didnt do it i would open it up right there in the store and do it-- so she called in her sandwich guy and told him to do it. Again i got attitude from him!!! Best lobster roll of the weekend! Nice chunks of lobster. Tried both the warm and cold one, and both were good. Although, I prefer the cold one. Sure, it is small, and the place is take-out only, but if it's a nice day, you can just sit on a bench outside and enjoy a makeshift picnic. Both came with chips and pickles, and were so huge we couldn't finish them. My indicted co-conspirator impulse bought a slice of blueberry pie, which he said was good. The second day we wanted something lighter, and opted for good, old-fashioned PB&Js. Again, the sandwiches were pretty substantial, and a good price. It was stuffed with different vegetables, there was a wide variety of what was stuffed inside. I can't remember exactly what was in there but I know there were carrots, avocado, cucumbers, bell pepper etc, and it had a honey mustard dressing. My avocado was awful! It was crunchy! Avocado is supposed to be soft and flavorful. The fruit was half ripe, half not ripe. Disappointing.
