Basic looking dive bar in Libertyville that brings in mostly those that live around it. Downing's isn't a high class place. If looking for anything fancier, stay away and up the street to the hipper restaurants. Has basic beer on tap, and some crafts in bottles and cans. The prices are pretty good on these. A place that's called an Irish pub, but it's really just a regular old bar. It doesn't actually have that much Irish about it except the Guinness. They do have festivities around St. Patrick's Day though. Good beer. It's about $5 a pint. The bigger named corporate brands are on tap. May or may not have food. Seems like it depends on if they feel like making anything I guess. Of course, really not sure if you would want to even eat anything. The place isn't filthy but it's kind of scuzzy. Cheap prices are the best things about it. It's pretty boring in the afternoon, and gets livelier at night. They're open pretty late until 3 usually, so this is one of the few places that are still open late, so they get crowded the later it gets from people coming from other bars or wherever. read more

I love the hometown feel. The drinks,food and service is excellent. Teri is very friendly and always happy to see you. Angel cooks some really good Mexican food. The tacos are amazing. Another must try is the Philly cheesesteak with tater tots. read more

Hands down the worst bar in libertyville. The glasses are always beyond dirty and the tap beer taste skunky. Besides my better judgement, I decided to order some chicken fingers from the bartender "Evan Johnston" I proceed to bite into them just to find out they are all raw in the center. When I told the bartender "Evan" about the experience he proceeded to laugh in my face and not replace the chicken fingers. I am not one to complain or go on rants but something needs to be done about this bartender. Thankfully the other people working helped me out but this was by far the worst experience. Late night basic bar. Went with a friend one night after some of the other bars in Libertyville had closed for the night and we wanted a drink. Had never been here before so I was not sure what to expect. It has kind of a local hang out vibe, very basic, no frills, a bit of a dive bar but manageable. Drinks were affordable, and it looked as though all pop/soda is in cans or bottles which I thought was odd. They had a basic selection of liquors, and some beers on draft, it does the job. I saw someone order food so apparently they have food as well, which I'm guessing is basic pub grub but I did not eat there. The best part is the people watching, which one can reasonably assume because it is a late night bar you get a decent show so to speak. While we were there, there was a girl crying across the bar, some girls who randomly decided to dance (doesn't appear to be a dance floor...) and some completely wasted girl who's every other word was an expletive and was also losing her shirt. Needless to say good people watching and entertaining. Random groups of ages present and the bartenders were middle aged gentlemen who were friendly and unobtrusive. The place is fairly clean and plenty of seating. You can grab a table or sit at the big horseshoe shaped bar. They have pool tables in the back, there is a juke box. The restrooms are small and located near the bar (right by the south doors). It is in no way in line with the "fancier" bars in Libertyville, so don't expect that. If you are looking for a basic/dive bar, then this is it! So if you are out late, go for the drink and stay for the people watching. read more

A divey bar for beer people who wear t-shirts and shoot pool, as opposed to the collar-popping 'tini swillers further north on Milwaukee. That is until 2am, when the downtown Libertyville places close and that crew invades 'Drownings'. Be sure to ask about the day's beer special and get some (probably stale) free popcorn. read more

Had a groupon and decided to stop by for lunch with my wife. Some of the older reviews on here were not that positive, so I wasn't sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. I had fish and chips and one of a good choice of beer on tap...my wife had salad/grilled chicken. Both were very good! I thought the fish and chips was one of the better versions I've had in the area. Service (bartender) was friendly, relaxed, and efficient. Oh, and hot popcorn! read more

Be careful of using a credit card here. They have overcharged my CC by small amounts numerous times. Many have complained about this to no avail. I would be very cautious of this bar given zero regard for their customers and overcharges. Many friends have stopped going due to similar situations. read more

My favorite low-key bar to visit when I'm hanging out in my hometown. They have pool tables. I like that. They have a juke box with lots of Rage Against the Machine as what I can only assume is a tribute to famous Libertyviller Tom Morello. I respect that. They have those long rod pretzels on the bar. I dig that. But I probably wouldn't eat them. If you're lucky, you might have a random celebrity sighting. Word on the street is that Mr. Morello has been in on a number of occasions. read more

The bartender over charged my credit card. On top of that, forged my signature and wrote in his own tip. I talked to the owner and is denying the fact one of his employees committed a fraudulent act. I go there pretty often and very upset they haven't owned up to it. I asked for the cameras to be checked and the owner refuses to get back to me. I just want to be reimbursed and the truth to come out. Until that happens, I will not be back and it will remain a 1 star. Very shady stuff. read more

Just another Libertyville dive bar. Noting special and the food was not particularly good. Just your average beer and booze selection. Parking is rough the glassware is rougher, both mine and my dates glass had lipstick on the rim. Get a new dishwasher guys. read more

Typical dive bar--perfectly suited for cheap intoxicants and lively crowd. It's a saloon, if yer looking for snooty or don;t know what a saloon is, go to Firkins downtown Lville and pay $6 for a pint you could buy her for much less. If yer under 30, you may hate it, if your older, and born/raised in an old neighborhood where hundreds of these once flourished, you'll feel right at home. Ideal old saloon. read more

I am not a regular here but heard there was a new menu with new food. We went by on a weeknight somewhat early and had a few beers. We tried the sirloin sliders and an order of fish and chips with onion rings. Everything was excellent. Pretty sure the cole slaw and tarter sauce was homemade. The sliders had Carmelized onions which were cooked perfectly. I hate undercooked Carmelized onions. The actual burgers were juicy and delicious. I noticed quite a few other new items on the menu and will definitely go back and try something else. The bar itself was very large and nice. Ah Downings, THE place to be -- and be seen -- past midnight in Libertyville. Two pool tables, an electronic dart board, a Golden Tee machine, and free popcorn lure young and old to mingle around the horseshoe shaped bar. At times the eau-de-Downings, or stench as I call it can be overpowering, but don't let it detract from the unique joy of bumping into those old high school friends.
