The Downingtown Diner is a staple location from my childhood. As middle and high schoolers, we would hang out there and order milkshakes and fries. It's a great little spot in theory, but there are a few problems with the staff and food. The location itself is usually clean and fine, but the food is underwhelmingly average and a little overpriced for what you get. Staff are hit or miss. I've had experiences with super sweet servers and sometimes I've had ones that are incredibly rude, to the point where I got up to go to the restroom and she accused me of trying to dine and dash? Anyway, if you need diner food, it's really the only one in Downingtown so it'll probably stay open despite the crap service. It's walking distance from a lot of parks, restaurants, coffee shops, and homes, so it's a good area to stop for food on a stroll. read more

We went to Downingtown Diner twice this past weekend, for Friday and Saturday breakfast. Pancakes were fluffy and delicious. We didn't have "the Blob" but we tried quite a lot of the menu, including eggs, omelets, and even scrapple! All decent diner fare. Service was fast and friendly. Only ding against it is the interior is run down and small. And the mid morning sun is really annoying even with the blinds. read more

Rude wait staff. We came in, no greeting but just standing there. 'Should we seat ourselves' with no answer from anyone. Wait staff is terrible, we'll see abt the food. I seem to have made this my regular weekly breakfast stop. The staff are always friendly and the food is always good. I've been here at least 25 times and never had a bad meal or an incorrect order yet. I usually order the Blob Special which is a lot of food for the money. Customer service.... TERRIBLE ! Very rude manager! We sat at counter, asked to be moved to booth due to double door being opened constantly and cold draft coming in... Was told NO. Hear waitress in back yelling " I'm not switching FKing tables" after that we decided to leave. Did not receive our order and was told if we left they would call the police. The food in this place is outstanding!! My problem is my daughter and I visit for breakfast and decided lastnight to try dinner. We had three different waitresses who helped us. This was unusual to us only having had breakfast in this place. The First Girl was young. Very compassionate which again was unusual but appreciated! The second lady was an absolute disaster. I felt as though I was interrupting something. Her eyes were glassy and she seemed anxious. The last woman was walking around the restaurant asking Everyone how they were and singing which I found to be relaxing! Our food came to us fast and our friend came and went in conversation. The woman who gave us our bill again seemed bothered by being there! The waitresses who are pleasant are an absolute reason to dine here. Their musical selection by employees is an added plus! My husband and I went there tonight for dinner thinking we'd check it out. It would be a good option for us as we don't live far from there. We wish we hadn't. Neighbors of ours had said they had "friends" who liked it. We'd love to know what they got because we were extremely disappointed with our selections. My husband got the fried chicken and fries basket - the chicken tasted like fish (they must fry the fish in the same oil) and it took quite a while to make. We were okay with the wait but would have liked to have been informed of the longer wait when ordering rather than sitting and seeing other people who ordered after us had gotten served before us. I got a burger deluxe and it was terrible. I don't know why they even bother to take a temperature for the burger when ordering as it was dead. I don't like ketchup but had to put ketchup on it just so it had some moistness and even still I only could get down half of it. The fries were okay, nothing more than that. I got iced tea that tasted like old, gross dish water. The wait staff was friendly but not enough to make up for the food. Wish it would have been better. read more

I've going to this dinner for over 15 years. Posted many of awesome visits and experiences over the years with friends and family. Many of posts on their Facebook page too! Today, I had an experience that knocked me off my favorite diner experience. I entered the diner alone. They weren't that busy but had a few customers. I was seated right away. Waited, waited and waited. Waiter saw me but no acknowledgement nor attempt to greet me. Meanwhile, the 3 different tables of people that came in behind me were greeted, received their menus and ordered drinks. I tried to be patient because of the sign of the times. Waiter looked up again and after I made eye contact with him, he felt reluctant to come to me. He asked me if I wanted a drink. I said yes, then I gave it to him. I also told him my order of one plate. Nothing special;standard order. He told me to wait for him to get my drink and he would be back with it later. I said I'm just trying to make life easier for him. He told me. No! No! No! I'll tell you when I'm ready! I have a system! You can wait! Never in my life has a waiter talk to me this way. I have always been a big tipper, modest in my approach to waiters/waitresses but a very good tipper. I thought for a second, "WOW!" Then another second, "WOW!" I then told the waiter, "Guess what, I won't wait for you! You lost a good tip and a customer!" As I walked away he screams out, "You need a change of scenery!" He was a real character, classless act. Never again Downingtown Diner! I supported your business and your waitress staff through the pandemic. I supported you for many years before it too! But I'll never support you again with nasty, inferior service! You lost this customer for life! read more

This diner is FANTASTIC! Went here last night with a friend after work at around 9:15. The set up is exactly like the diner near my old house in New Jersey. I got a monte cristo sandwich, which was served open faced with a side of fries and syrup. The fries were fresh and crispy. The ham was a thick sliced ham steak and the was thick sliced, too. My friend got a BBQ bacon burger which she devoured. The waitress was very friendly and accommodating. I'll definitely be back! read more

I had breakfast there yesterday and was very disappointed in the food. The waitress told me the hash browns were home made and they cost more than home fries. Expectations for eating at a diner are pretty simple, attentive service, comfort foods, quick meals, etc. Stopped going here early last year because waitstaff was more interested in checking their phones than checking their customers and breakfast came out in stages rather than all at once. Who wants toast 5 mins after you get your eggs? Gave it another shot late summer, early fall. Decided, maybe I'd try lunch instead of breakfast. Same disappointment. Stopped going. Came on New Year's Day- very busy but the waitress was very good. She attended to all of our needs with a great attitude. Food was very good as well. 3 of the 4 got the spinach and feta omelet. You could tell everything was fresh and made to order. Home fries were great and you can't go wrong with a English muffin covered in butter. I agree with everything Meghan said. I was in the mood for a great burger and thought I'd try the new diner. All diners have great burgers, right? Not this one. It was not fresh meat, was dense, no flavor and they didn't even have decent hamburger dill pickles. The bun was stale and dry so they slightly toasted it to cover up the fact. Also what ever happened to the good ol' American french fry? The fries were some odd potato with crispy coating and it tasted like they cooked it in the same oil they cook fish. The whole experience was disappointing and the help was oblivious to the fact I only ate half of the meal and didn't even accept the soup to go. I will not be back and this experience will be told to everyone I know. Mom always said word of mouth can make or break a place, I hope the owners take these comments seriously otherwise they soon will be closed. Oh, just one more thing... The cashier cleaned off a table after the diners left and I noticed she was just wiping all the mess onto the floor. This made me look at the floor and mats and I was shocked at how dirty it was. It made me wonder how clean the kitchen is if they don't even care how dirty the public space is. It turned my stomach. I grew up in Downingtown and never once ate at the Downingtown Diner. I hang my head in shame. In my defense, it's changed hands quite a few times since my childhood. The current owner seems to know what he/she's doing, because the food and the service here is excellent. Coffee's good, eggs and potatoes were good, pancakes were really good. It's very tiny inside, less than a dozen booths, so it's probably not great for big parties unless you like eating standing up, but great for a nice Sunday breakfast if you can beat the crowds. read more
