Authentic little coffee shop in downtown Honolulu, walkable in distance if you work downtown. The menu is no-fuss and simple. None of those hipster crafted beverages. If you like simple like me, this place is for you. I went first thing this morning to get my matcha fix. The gentleman working the front counter was welcoming and soft spoken. I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk and a magic bar. The matcha is whisked in a bowl in front of you. I could tell they make their beverages with care. The matcha latte was smooth and creamy, unlike Starbucks where it's sometimes chunky and chalky. The magic bar was a nice little treat to start my morning off right. Will definitely be back again. I've checked out other coffee shops on the island, but nothing is ever as good as a cup from here! On my most recent visit I had the 100% Kona Latte. Very smooth & tastes great. Downtown Coffee...simpllicity ends with there. Located in Pioneer Plaza this cute little nook doesn't look much from outside but once you enter it's mind-blowing to see all the goodness that happens here. There are two doors though one is for entrance and the other for exit so be mindful as this place is quite small so keeping your six feet space is respectful. First of all you'll see a roaster, yup they roast their beans now how cool is that! There's also a rack filled with various mugs, tumblers and various accessories a display case filled with baked goods and grab and go drinks not to mention their drink menu with incredible offerings from your traditional Latte, Chai, Mocha, Matcha and Italian Soda...it's the quality they put in each up is something you'll know with that first sip. Currently they do have some seasonal items (Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte, Peppermin Mocha and Maple Affogato) was tempting but seeing they use Japanese Matcha was something I couldn't pass. Alternate dairy options (Almond, Coconut, Oat or Soy) is available with a bunch of syrups including sugar free is nice! I've heard much about their Matcha Torte that's made with their Japanese Matcha with a bamboo charcoal crust was yummy, not too sweet but just the right matcha flavor I loved. There are a few tables outside scattered around the area all nice and clean made it a nice break spot which I needed to do some deep thinking and breathe, it was totally needed and appreciated to have spots like this and worked wonders as I got back on my feet and got my adulting errands done. Me: Yes, but this makes it much more special! On my last visit in August, the owner told me that the Mokka from Maui was really good, and I took him up on that. It is the most flavorful coffee I've bought in all the times I've bought coffee when I'm out here. Perfectly balanced with a chocolatey finish. Since I was out here for over a week, I bought a pound for myself to brew, and a pound to take back to the mainland. I've also bought coffee drinks here too, and they've always been consistent. Handcrafted coffee in downtown...yes please!! They roast the beans in house, your drink is made to order AND everyone here is super nice and friendly!! Since your drink is made to order please be patient...they take pride in preparing your drink just right. One thing that I really do like is that their regular milk is whole milk not 2%. They do have alternatives as well. This shop in Pioneer Plaza is cozy, with seats outside if you have the time to enjoy your drink there. Their merchandise is another thing to look at before leaving. Have visited all of the niche coffee shops on the island and this one stands out as the best thus far. Why? They source the best beans from the islands and carefully roast small batches which means the stockpile being served is always fresh and at peak roast / rest periods. There are other larger roasters on the island but the quality and freshness doesn't compare. Couple that with the great service by folks that truly care what and how they deliver. Downsides?.. this is a small shop, this is not starbux or tully's. There are a lot of sitting areas outside of the shop where you can enjoy your coffee along with the varieties of pastries they offer. I've been going to this coffee shop ever since I started working in downtown as it's in the same building as I work in. This coffee shop is truly a hidden gem. The owner, Fred Hokada, is very friendly and it shows that he is passionate about coffee. Not many coffee shops in Honolulu use 100% Kona or Kau beans in their espresso based drinks (most of them use a blend), but Downtown Coffee does! So far, I've tried their 100% Kona macchiato, 100% Kau macchiato, and also 100% Waialua macchiato. This is definitely my favorite coffee shop in Honolulu. I gave this place a try since Beach Bum closed. It's on the Fort Street Mall, in the Pioneer Plaza Bldg, just makai of King Street. That makes it a little further away from my one hour time limit Chinatown shopping forays. You won't like this place if you think an iced caramel macchiato is a proper coffee beverage. But, if you work the downtown financial district and need caffeine along with your nicotine vape to get through the day, or you appreciate being able to try multiple styles of locally grown espressos then stop here. I discovered they use very good Hawaii sourced coffee - one of their espresso blend uses Rusty's Kau, Maui Mokka, and Maui Yellow Caturra in a medium roast. I found it a little too acidic and bitter for my tastes plain, but a little added sugar really brightened up the cup. They currently have a medium dark holiday blend with coffee beans from Maui and Waialua. The matcha tart, made in house, with a food grade bamboo charcoal powder crust and topped with nuts is wonderful. You'll usually only find bamboo charcoal used in Japanese bakeries or patisseries, or sometimes in Japanese senbei. A Cake Works biscotti is nice even if you need sugar and milk for your drink. There are takeout Baker and Butcher sandwiches. I just wish they had their croissants. Being situated on the makai end of Fort Street Mall means you're less likely to encounter those lost souls who engage in aimless conversations with imaginary buddies and able to sit on an outside table without being bothered. read more

Every time and all the time, their iced lattes blow me away! I've never ever had any that came close to theirs. It's like is has this near-mocha quality that isn't sugary like all others. And the natural hint of Cinnamon! And it's all because of their own roasting of local Hawaiian beans. It doesn't take too many sips before you get THAT sensation. It's when you first taste something you never had before that dives deep into your soul-connection and says, "OMFG! Could this be love?" But, of course not. It just stirs up a sensation kind of like that. Pretty damn good feeling, nonetheless. I've been to Italy and back and to many other places. I've lived in Seattle since before and during the height of craft coffee there. You can travel the whole world, and I doubt you will find an iced latte better than what Downtown Coffee makes. I am so glad I gave this place a second chance. A little background...I was in love with the vanilla latte's of Kele's Coffee (previous coffee shop that was at Downtown Coffee's current location). So of course, I was sad when Kele's closed. I saw that DC replaced Kele's, so of course I gave it a try! I was greeted by two hippies and ordered my usual vanilla latte. Was utterly disappointed in it and went back to Starbucks (yeah yeah). A couple years later, a bunch of my foodie friends kept mentioning how they love DC's coffee. I was still turned off by my initial latte years ago. What somewhat recently caught my attention was when my coworker showed me the matcha torte from DC--the top layer is made of matcha and the bottom is made of bamboo charcoal (the same black stuff that's popular for detoxing and that's all the rage in Japanese soaps)! I absolutely love matcha and there's definitely a lack of places downtown that serve matcha, so I decided to give DC a try again. I come to this coffee shop when I want a break from Starbucks. And Honolulu Coffee Company. And when my mother is not with me (she always wants Starbucks). It feels like I'm cheating but I do like to patronize small mom & pop stores when I can. I never tried anything on their menu other than their hot chocholate so I cannot give a broad review. The hot chocholate doesn't feel as dense or heavy in my stomach after I finish like other coffee shops. Feels lighter. The inside of the establishment is clean. And the employees are always nice to me. Never had a bad experience. I did notice that the prices did increase but not a lot. I used to pay $2.80 for a large hot chocholate, now I pay $3.03. Best coffee!! I got the 100% Kona coffee iced vanilla latte w almond milk and an iced americano. Both were delicious. The iced americano had a stronger flavor than some other coffee shops we've been to. The latte was so good, can still taste the coffee despite it being such a sweet latte. We also got their lemon bar mochi which complimented the iced americano perfectly. If you're nearby it's definitely worth a visit :) read more
