This restaurant was recommended to me by my Bed and Breakfast host and I am so thankful for the recommendation! I took a Lyft to the restaurant but there seemed to be plenty of street parking on a Saturday night. The restaurant several small rooms with low ceilings and romantic dimmed lighting. The first area you walk through is a cigar area. I was surprised that the cigar smell does not travel into the other dining areas. I ordered Lamb with spinach and grits! Wonderful gem in Macon, GA. Beautiful bar with anything you can imagine to drink. Great wine list. Ambiance is cozy and intimate but not stuffy. Service is amazing. The staff knows the menu and can recite the amazing specials by heart. Jordan is a wonderful server and so much more. She can advise you if you are struggling to decide between all the terrific starters and entrees. Even the sides are terrific, especially the button mushrooms. A found treasure in Macon. It is literally hidden down a Lane, aka an alley. Reward yourself and don't give up! We sat at a table in the bar area. Clarissa, our server was awesome, answering questions & making recommendations. We opted for appetizers... shrimp & grit waffles, ahi tuna, beef medallion with blue cheese, homemade mozzarella with toast points. Top that off with Honey almond graham crust ice cream pie. Booked a reservation for a special occasion on their website. Showed up a few minutes early tonight and were told they did not have a reservation for me. I proceeded to show her a screenshot of my reservation, she wouldn't even look at it. She said I'm sorry I don't know what to tell you I have 91 reservations to seat tonight. I said no, you have 92 as I HAVE a reservation. She said sorry can't help you. You shouldn't have booked online you should have called instead. I said so as a guest who HAS a reservation we will wait for the next available table even though it will not be at our reserved time. She said no she has to seat the other 91 tables between then and closing. So in short.... Their website doesn't update their seating plan and it's not only the clients fault, it's also their problem oh and forget your special occasion these people don't give a damn. read more

Came here for a double date with my mama and her husband and me and my husband. As a group we ordered two appetizers the Barrata and Grit Fritters. My mother and I also ordered a chocolate martini and my husband got a side car. All the drinks were made VERY well. I was impressed. My chocolate martini tasted like dark chocolate with a healthy pour of liquor. The Barrata appetizer was amazing. It was a mozzarella ball with a ricotta like inside and a house made marinara sauce with toasted bread for dipping. The Grit Fritter didn't taste like much and had a really weird texture. It definitely was not my favorite and I won't be ordering that again. My chicken was cooked well, it was still tender and juicy. It was seasoned decently and the marsala sauce definitely added some flare to the dish. I did have to season up my spinach though because it was kind of bland. My husband had the Bison Steak, Spinach, and pesto mashed potatoes. His steak was cooked perfectly and it had a decent flavor, but it like the spinach was also under seasoned. Our server, I think her name was Megan, was so sweet. She was very attentive and knowledgeable I was very impressed. I forgot to mention we also got the Amaretto ice cream pie. It was really good! It has been a year since my awful experience at Downtown Grill. This time, I did everything differently and ordered the opposite of what I did before. The appetizer, burrata in marinara, was the worst part of the meal. It was tasty and great to eat, but it was lukewarm, like our previous experience. It made me nervous for the meal since I didn't want to get sick again. I ordered the pork chop special that was stuffed with apples and shallots. And, I had to say, it was DIVINE. It was warmer than the appetizer, but it didn't bother me too much. My broccoli was done slightly on the raw side, and the grits were wonderfully done. I must say the best part of the meal was that pecan pie. Rule of thumb in Georgia--ordering Pecan pie is the best way to end the meal and will never be a disappointment. Overall, a much better experience than the last time, but the restaurant still has food temperature issues. read more

This has been my "go to" restaurant for a nice evening out for several years. This past weekend my husband and I went with some friends and we did not have a good experience at all. My tomato cream pasta was dry and not served hot. My husband's steak was cooked incorrectly (massively overcooked) and we had to wait on a new steak. My friend's spinach salad never came out. There was no apology for the issues, and we had to hunt our server down to finally pay and leave. I am giving 3 stars because I am including previous experiences to be fair, but this experience was 1 star. An apology was in order, which we never got and I honestly expect more out of this restaurant. If you're going out to spend this much money on dinner, everything should be cooked to perfection and the service should be stellar. We will have our next outing at Oliver Perry's instead. read more

Came here for our anniversary and it was absolutely delicious! We come here a few times a year at least. Our waitress, Sierra, was amazing! Our food was timed perfectly so that each course came at the perfect moment and everything was amazing! We ordered the crab cakes and the ahi tuna first, then the blacken New York strip and filet mignon, followed by the peach cobbler for dessert, which is now my new favorite dessert here! What a great find. My husband and I were having a steak craving and this place did not disappoint! It was a little tough to find but we eventually found it tucked away! Initially I was discouraged when I entered because they allow cigar smoking at the bar but I was assured I wouldn't smell it in the dining area and they were correct. I'm very sensitive to smoke and it didn't bother me at all. So for those who want to smoke cigars this is the place for you! Our steaks were cooked to perfection! The meals ordered were the (1) tomato cream pasta with shrimp, (2) trout special, (3) bass special, and (4) aloha ribeye steak. I hate that I seem to be the only person in the history of downtown grill to request the arcane and forbidden most common doneness of the most common steak. If only dovetail offered dry aged comfort farms ribeye that was $10 less. If only loom offered a wagyu ribeye that was $30 less. A great place to enjoy a nice drink, big juicy steak, and nice cigar. Overall great experience, the only critique I would have is the grill marks on my steak were burnt a little too much on the steak giving my whole steak a burnt taste. So I know, I know historically this place is known for being a steakhouse and my review will no doubt indicate that yes, nobody in my party ordered steak. I'm sure the steak is delicious. That being said I'm providing a review representative of my party, and not only myself. So I had been on travel and was on my way towards Atlanta when a coworker suggested we stop by the Downtown Grill as it was very well known for its filet mignon. Being from out of town, I was not quite familiar with Macon. This place was slightly confusing to find unless you saw the picture of the entrance on google maps because your GPS will tell you that you've passed by it. The way to reach the entrance is down an alleyway past an open yellow bar gate. Parking around the area is a tad tricky. The place itself has good decor. Being from further north, I was surprised there was smoking in the bar area as you pass through to the dining room, though they do have a humidor area for smoking as well. Though to be fair, I don't know Georgia's laws on indoor smoking at establishments. Anyways, one of my coworkers had sent a reservation ahead of time which was probably a good idea. My party consisted of a total of 4 including myself so we fit just fine in their booths. I'm always a big fan of places that don't have too many menu options because typically it means they do certain things well. That being said I had eaten steak too many times the last couple of days and as had others in my party so none of us ordered steak. We arrived in the evening at around 6:30 pm and it took roughly 30 minutes to get service after being seated. Subsequently after ordering it took roughly 30-45 minutes to get our appetizers. While eating our apps, we also ordered beers which didn't arrive until our entrees did 30 minutes later. We ordered the tomato/mozzarella, crab cakes, grit fritters, and mussels. Other than the fact that the crab cakes were not jumbo lump as described, the apps were good. My party ordered the duck breast, market sea scallops, lamb chops, and myself, I ordered the market fish. Overall in the same order, the duck breasts was very good albeit unexpected that the duck breast was cut into small pieces, the sea scallops was good albeit remarkably petite (6 count), the lamb chops was cooked somewhat unevenly, and the fish which was mine, was probably the best fish I ever had. The fish was a corvina in panko breading that was buttery, flaky, and juicy with excellent texture from the breading. So overall the main aspects of the entrees was good. The sides however, somewhat different. The cheesy grits, were somewhat unexpectedly subpar. The spinach was supposed to be cooked in garlic, no semblance of garlic in the spinach. The green/string beans over seasoned. Our waitress was very nice. I'm sure she had many table tops. That being said, if they are understaffed they should really hire more people because I've been to much better restaurants at that price point that never took that long to serve people food given the number of guests there. I would recommend eating there, though if you are on a business trip as I and my company were and you are stopping before driving to Atlanta, consider somewhere else if it is the late evening otherwise you will likely be there for a minimum of 2.5-3 hours. In conclusion, food overall good. Service, maybe admirable. read more

Even still we bravely tried to eat some of them (second service) and spent time hugging the toilet. Please consider removing these from your menu if they are old. We ate here twice the first time food was great except the aged ribeye was tough and gristles my elk chops were wonderful, ambiance was cozy. It was a little run down but the service was wonderful so we decided to go back for a birthday dinner with our son. Second time, my wife and son had elk chops and I had the fillet mignon sides were not hot and my wife didn't get her food till 10 minutes after the rest. The thing that drove this place down was it's just a little dirty and when a mouse was running around the Dining room the staff seemed totally accustomed to it. It was just running from table to table eating scape off floor. Then it ran under our table and up my pant leg. It totally ruined the meal and experience.
