We've eaten here twice, both times have gotten great service. This time we decided to get the bone marrow appetizer. It was very good and different. We both then got the spinach salad with the bacon vinaigrette dressing. It was delicious. However, for the steak, my husband got the ribeye and I got the blackened new York strip. Mine was over cooked and my husband's ribeye was thinner than he liked. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the first time we ate here it was delicious! Nestled off the beaten path in a downtown alleyway, sits this little gem. Parking downtown on a Friday night can be a nightmare, but I saw a sign about valet. We found near-by street parking, and there are several parking garages close. The atmosphere and pricing are especially fitting for celebrating those special life events. Hubz & I just celebrated our 5th Anniversary there tonight. All 4 courses were served in a timely manner, and at no point did we feel rushed. We indulged in a cheese board, salads, steak entrees, and dessert. The cheese appetizer was delicious. Our $50+steaks were overcooked, & the green beans were very salty. My fiancé and I LOVE it here. We have a reservation every single week on Wednesday at 730pm. They take the time to call and make sure that our table is ready, make sure we are still coming, and even have my regular drink (a bottle of wine) ready and on the table before we even get there. Erica and Meghan are incredibly waitresses, we absolutely adore them. They really make the experience and are so fun. My fiancé and I are very outgoing bubbly people, and they quite literally match our energy. This place was really great! I loved the Manhattan drink, cheese plate, and filet mignon. Food had really great flavor and perfect seasoning. Really awesome desserts too! Our large party said this was one of the best meals ever! I enjoyed the atmosphere, except for the cigars in the front. You can't smell them inside the actual restaurant, but this sort of turned me off. To me, this is not a complete negative, although I am sort of worried about being around smoke. This place is the cats pajamas! Everything you get here is going to be fantastic. It is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. They have specialty items that are not available at a lot of other restaurants. I had bone marrow as an appetizer and the elk steak for the main dish, followed by their in-house crème brûlée. I like how their menu doesn't have too many options, but still enough for everyone in a party to like something on the menu. Our dining experience at the Downtown grill was outstanding. My wife and I went for our 31st wedding anniversary and we were looking for a quite, fine dining experience. We couldn't of been more pleased. The Downtown grill is located in an alley way between two major streets in downtown Macon. The building itself was unique. It is an older brick building that has been restored. It is an extremely cool place for those who like these type of renovated historic structures. They even have a plaque on the building proclaiming "Gregg Allman proposed to Cher here." We had reservations and were promptly seated upon arrival. Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. We promptly ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and our waitress let us know that it was Wednesday and that our wine would be half price. For appetizers my wife ordered the ahi tuna and I ordered a bowl of French onion soup. Both were outstanding and we both commented that the appetizers may have been the best that we have ever had. My wife ordered the pan seared fish with cheese grits and green beans. She absolutely loved her meal. I ordered the dry aged ribeye, pesto mashed potatoes and mushrooms. My steak was cooked to perfection and is one of, if not, the best steak that I have had in this area. The potatoes and mushrooms were a great compliment to my entree. My wife and I have eaten at this restaurant several times before and ive yet to leave them a review. When we want to have a nice date night at our home town, this has always been the spot to do it at. The service here has always been over the top and the staff is very knowledgeable. There are many restaurants in this town that claim to have good steaks, but by far, this place takes the gold. There is an extensive bar menu and they will, without a doubt, have either a wine or a whiskey to please your palate. The chartcuterie plate here is a must. They serve around 4 or 5 different types of cheese' with two or three ham options, and ofcourse, the raw honey. I know it sounds weird, but I recommend you get the cheese and lightly dip it in the honey! that contrast between salty and sweet will be a pleasant surprise. What I always get when I come here is the lamb. The lamb is cooked to perfection and the portion size is bigger than anywhere else ive seen. We were visiting our daughter at Mercer University last night and we took her to Downtown Grill. Everything we ordered was delicious ! My husband ordered the elk chops and said it was one of the best dinners he ever had. (It was a special) I had the lamb chops and besides the portion being very generous, the flavor was amazing. My daughter ate the tomato cream pasta with blackened chicken and loved every bit of it. We all ordered appetizers, the onion soup, loaded potato soup and seared ahi. We all loved it!!! My daughter ordered the mint chocolate chip ice cream cake to take back to her apartment. ( we drove quickly). About an hour later she sent me a message saying it was one of the best desserts she ever ate and she's a dessert fanatic. I can't wait to go back!!!! Outdated. Overpriced. Overhyped. Underwhelming. Nothing I had here was bad...but nothing was all that good either. In fact, it was so unmemorable that I can't even recall everything I had. I do remember, however, that I had a fish special of the day...trout, I think it was, blackened, with a chorizo sauce on top. It was adequate...but just adequate. When the bill came I was a bit taken aback because it cost $35, and the other fish on the printed menu cost between $20 to $25. I guess I should've asked for the price before ordering it. Oh well. I remember thinking that for the same price I could've gotten two bowls of ramen and an order of pork buns at Momofuku. Which do you think is the better meal AND better value? Unfortunately, however, the four words I used at the beginning of this review could also be used for most of the dining options in Macon. So as much as I don't really want to recommend Downtown Grill to people, if you're looking for somewhere to eat downtown, this isn't such an awful option. And that's really sad, but true. read more

It seemed like an excellent night to enjoy an intimate dinner with my boyfriend, so we decided to visit the Downtown Grill again after we enjoyed our first experience here last month so much. The highpoint was the food. It was as delicious as it was the first time, so we were not disappointed in that aspect of our experience. The service wasn't terrible, but it could have been better. After we received our food, we seemed to be mostly ignored. Then, came the ultimate slap in the face to our meal. We advised the server that we had a gift certificate we wanted to redeem on our check. We were told that there would be an 18% gratuity added to the check automatically because of the gift certificate. Oh, but that's not even the worst of it. The check arrived with this gratuity handwritten in on the bottom - and it was miscalculated against the post-tax ticket total rather than the pre-tax subtotal. When we brought it to the server's attention, she seemed more aggravated than apologetic which makes us question if it was more of an integrity issue than a mathematical error. The very sad part is, we generally tip 20% or more based upon the pre-tax subtotal, even when we are using gift certificates, so docking yourself back to 18% by dictating our gratuity only insults good customers. I'm not sure at this time if we will return. We had made a LOT of verbal referrals to your restaurant, but based upon this experience, that won't happen again. **Additional comments / Reply to the restaurant comment: I'd also like to add that this was our 2nd visit using a purchased gift certificate. On our first visit, we were not slapped with this automatic gratuity and that was a little over a month ago. So when was this "policy" started or do you decide to randomly choose what customers to place your "policy" on? I'll also remark that it was the SAME server handing us the ticket as well. In a million years I wouldn't have expected to find this place in Macon, GA - but there it is... to call it a Steak-House is to undersell it. The menu is rather eclectic and the waitstaff are, to say the least, enthusiastic, very knowledgeable and proud of the food. The atmosphere is rich and inviting and the wine selection is certainly sufficient to meet most people's tastes. I highly recommend the Downtown Grill if you're looking for a quite place to meet up with friends or family for a leisurely dinner you won't soon forget. PS ... don't be put off by the location. The entrance is in an alley and the outside of the building looks like something out of the 1930 - but once inside, you'll immediately warm up to the place. Macon doesn't have much going for it when it comes to basic restaurant types, but Downtown Grill comes about as close as you can get to a decent, local steakhouse. The steaks are nothing special but are always prepared correctly, and they are served with 2 sides (one of which can be a salad), a true rarity at a steakhouse. The mixed grill option is great if you aren't sure what you want - they typically offer a small filet, lamb chops, and quail, all for about $25. Great appetizers too, including grit fritters and sauteed artichoke hearts. The main room has an intimate, yet open feel to it, and the upstairs is great for larger groups. Don't expect Morton's, or Outback, and you'll be happy you ate here. read more

Came to Downtown Grill while visiting in Macon. We found the ambiance to be very quaint and romantic. Service was excellent, and the warm bread was a nice feature. The menu is very limited, so if you are a particular diner you may want to call as everything on the online menu is not offered. They have nice wines, but no draft/craft beers. Meals were presented well and were well prepared. A larger, more inclusive menu would have made this a five star restaurant. read more

I wish I could give 0 stars ! I attended a birthday dinner on Saturday. Upon walking into the restaurant you walked through a cigar bar which was very smokey and a complete turn off. We were seated in the very back of the restaurant in a private room with only one server for a party of 16 people. Due to rain and no designated parking for their establishment we were about 15 mins late from walking 3 blocks to to the restaurant. The server seemed to be agitated from the start not sure if she was overwhelmed with the amount of people, or her own personal issues. She immediately took our drink and appetizers order. Once those were taken she left and didn't come back for over 25 mins. The host of the dinner had purchased a few whole bottles of wine and water prior to our arrival so we had that to hold us over until our personal drinks arrived from the bar. When the server brought out the drinks and appetizers she didn't bring out the orders correctly. Either she didn't put them all in the system or she placed too many of the wrong items. I had ordered the crab cakes and ginger ale that I never received. Which was fine since everyone that ordered them stated they needed to be cooked longer. Still with smiles on our faces we didn't allow that to ruin the night. It was then another 30 minutes before the server returned. Never once peeking her head in to check on us or see if we needed anything. When she finally came back she bought another server with her to help take the orders. We initially asked about placing to go orders in which they denied it and stated that the person had to be present to place an order only one entree per person. That should have been a red flag We proceeded to order our entrees in which I had lamb chops cooked medium well with pesto mashed potatoes and asparagus . My boyfriend had chicken breast with cheese grits with button mushrooms. The food took about another 45 minutes to come out but when it did it was a disaster. The presentation of the plate was nice but my lamb chops were Med rare on the inside all 4 of them with no seasoning on them at all. The pesto mashed potatoes were delicious and my asparagus made it to me 20 mins after I received my food and they were cold. In fact all 6 people that ordered the lamb chops food was undercooked and under seasoned. The chicken was overcooked and dry but the cheese grits and mushrooms were delicious. We simply made the server aware of our issues with our food and she apologized but never tried to correct the food or bring a manager. Soon as they served the food they stated the kitchen was closed for the evening. They started passing out the bills and immediately I noticed that it was two items on my bill that I never ordered. I simply made the server aware she left to get it fixed and came back again with it still wrong. I stated to her that the bill was still wrong and she proceeded to get it fixed again. They automatically added gratuity to everyone bill between 12-15%. I know my bill was $92.xx after the gratuity in which I gave her $100 bill and let her keep the change. So the fact that the manager reached out after we left stating that we could never make reservations again because we didn't leave the servers a tip and was disrespectful. Out of all 16 people that attended the party our bills all together was well over $1500. First off the service was horrible and the food was not up to par but yet everyone still paid their bills without hesitation. When you give mediocre service you are tipped by your performance in which it was horrible. Gratuity covered that terrible service and it's funny everyone actually even gave a tip on top of the gratuity. Then we were told we were being disrespectful to the servers. Lets make something clear we were in the presence of our parents and host of other older prestigious adults so disrespectful wasn't even an option. It's sad that our "Great America" is still not so great and racism is still prevailing. They expected a group of African Americans to be uncivilized and tasteless but we were the complete opposite even when we were deliberately giving terrible service. If I could give this place 5,000 stars, I would! This is easily one of the best meals I've ever had. It's great food like you'd expect at a high end big city restaurant, but in a homey atmosphere without the pretentious vibe. When you first walk in, it's got the local bar feel, but more upscale. Everyone's just real and friendly. I loved it and felt instantly comfortable. We started off with appetizers - fried artichoke hearts, ahi tuna, and grit fritters. All A++++ My main course was the filet mignon. Cooked exactly as ordered and to perfection! On the side, I got the grits and broccoli. Both were absolutely heavenly. *cue choir of angels* I ordered dessert, which I never do. But, the desserts they had sounded so heavenly, I couldn't resist! I'm so glad I ordered, because it was just delicious. If they have the cinnamon ice cream, order it and get it with the honey. That's real local honey, not the junk you get in the plastic bears at the supermarket. And all of the desserts are homemade. I believe they said the owner makes them all himself. Perfection. Even the water in my glass was delicious. Like, what did they do to the water to make it taste so good?! They were also very accommodating to my food allergies and took great care of me. The server was very friendly and told us a story about the building, which has a great deal of history, and how Gregg Allman proposed to Cher there! We also met with the owner, who came over to talk with us and greet us. I'm not sure if he usually does that or he just came over to say hello because I was with local friends of his, but he was a great, down to earth guy and told me about another restaurant he's opening in downtown that is going to be unique and fun, so if you go, ask them about the other restaurant. Also, they do VALET parking! This is important, because of the location. It's in an alleyway. Use the valet. It will eliminate parking headaches. Finally, I wanted to go back just for the grits. We were admittedly a bit skeptical upon arrival to the abandoned-looking brick building off an alley, but were happily surprised when we were greeted with a true old-school steakhouse with lots of charm. "Cowboy steak" - a 22oz bone in rib eye that earns you that title if you can finish it - was tasty, though not my favourite piece of beef of all time. My duck, however, was perfect - tender and sweet, with a maple glaze reminiscent of crispy bacon. The grilled broccoli and braised mushrooms were excellent sides, and after trying my companion's, I would say the best of the options. Now, the most memorable moment has nothing to do with steak, or seafood (their other professed specialty). It was the shrimp and grits. Seriously. Cheesy grits (thus, not "traditional") with spicy andouille sausage and tender shrimp - this appetizer (?!) was divine. I would return just for this. Not kidding. An excellent restaurant. Certainly one of the more expensive places in the city, but I think it's worth every penny. Their specials are always lovely. The last time I was there my date ordered some sort of special fish with a thin layer of sausage seared on top of it and pan-fried. I stole a few bites and it was great. I consider their pièce de résistance to be their stuffed Filet Mignons. They have one with blue cheese (phenomenal) and another with goat's milk cheese and cranberries (mind-boggling). I almost laughed when I saw that other yelpers tried to imply their steak options were boring. The last time I went their side dishes were excellently cooked, their salads were fresh and crisp, and their cheese plate was excellent (especially good: the aged Cheddars and Havarti with dill). In the past I've had their lamb, and my date usually orders their duck. They do an excellent job with both of those dishes as well. Their ambiance is wonderful. Lots of dark wood tones and classic furnishings. The place is quiet and lighting is subdued. The booths are large and (if my memory serves) they are tall. I know my table's conversation last visit was quiet and I didn't feel distracted by the chatter of the rest of the restaurant, even though they were full. Far and away one of the best places in Macon to charm a date, if you're old-school and are looking for an intimate dinner for two. You will need to pay attention to Google Maps if you're unfamiliar with Downtown grill. Macon uses the "lane" designation to refer to the tiny (generally one-way) alleys that run alongside each major street, and Downtown Grill is on one. They offer valet parking though, so you can drive until you find it, then let them park your car for you. read more

But everything was served at the correct temperature and a timely manner. We stared with the seared ahi tuna special appetizer. Nothing to write home about. I had the halibut special - blackened - with a baked potato and broccoli. Scott had the veal Parmesan. Strange the server did not offer pasta with this dish. Did you know? They're location is horrible. It took me 15 minutes to find them. First off, its extremely hard to find! I drove up and down the street about 4x until I finally decided to park. I found a teenie sign that said Downtown Grill, which points to the back of this alley with barely anything next to it. They do have complimentary valet, which is nice and only if I had known... I had gotten take out, so I can't quite critic the ambiance, service, etc, but I'm all about the food. If it doesn't taste good, all of the bonus points don't really count. I ordered the seared sea scallops and they're about as average as you can get. Actually, they're a bit small of sea scallops as well. I'm not quite sure if its bc I'm ordering seafood in middle GA, but they're ok. They just plain seared or even grilled them with little to no seasoning. The sides were decent as well. The asparagus was nothing spectacular and the souffle wasn't anything to die for as well. On top of that, they had forgotten to place silverware in the bag, so I was trying to eat my meal with my hands which wasn't very enjoyable. If I were in town again, I'd probably try something else.
