This restaurant has the best Japanese food /sushi for the price and quality. I have been here over 5 times already. I have their waitlist QR code saved in my phone so that I can always check the line. My favorite is the seared salmon sashimi-- super fresh and you can taste the nice char from the grill. Might be my new favorite sushi place. Service is quick and all the servers are friendly. Sushi is fresh and relatively good deal for the quality you get. You also get free corn soup right when you sit down. Place is pretty spacious. I've come for lunch and the lunch special was decent. Loved the dressing on the side salad they give you. And the lunch bento comes with miso soup. I came again tonight for dinner to try their yakitori which is only available after 4pm and food was spot on again. I saw them putting our reserved signs on tables so I'm assuming they take reservations. Yakitori was decent. I wasn't blown away but it was good. The chicken was just cooked. Like I saw a tiny bit of pink from what could just be how they cook it but I mean I wasn't sure but it tasted fine and I haven't gotten sick yet so yes I rolled the dice with that one. My son got the poke bowl and it was pretty big. Nothing special other than the size. I got the maki bento - salmon, fatty tuna, yellowtail and crab - and I added the sushi. I could have just done with two rolls but my eyes were bigger than my stomach. The salmon and fatty tuna were the best. Yellowtail was pretty good. Crab was mildly disappointing. My favorite is the sweet shrimp sushi. Fresh and they deep fry the head. I got it automatically the first time I came but had to ask for it the second time. That was my only complaint. Well that and they only have two single stall restrooms which is always a pet peeve of mine for restaurants but I did see a line for the men's restroom (total surprise since it's always the women who have to wait) and a waitress told the men they could just use the women's one. This has become one of my favorite spots for casual sushi in the SGV. I've been here a few times now and they consistently serve quality sushi and sashimi. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, and pretty spacious, so I've never had to wait for a table. I've tried a good mix of items here. The lemon roll was solid, and the Kyo sashimi mix has a nice variety of fish. We also tried both the Osaka chirashi and the Kyo chirashi. The Osaka is more of your standard chirashi with a good variety and solid portion. If you're feeling a little fancier, go for the Kyo chirashi. It comes with higher quality cuts and a more premium selection overall. Both were really good, and the sushi rice here is on point. I've also had their bento box where you can choose 2 to 3 items. We went with tempura, salmon kama, and albacore, and everything was delicious. One thing I really like is they give nice thick cuts of sashimi, even for pricier items like toro. The servers are always super nice which makes the experience even better. Overall, I think this place hits a really good balance. Good quality without being overly expensive, which is hard to find in the SGV. Definitely a spot I'll keep coming back to. read more

I read all the great reviews for this newer restaurant in Downtown Monrovia, so had to try it out. The food, service and atmosphere were all great, 5 stars all around. Modern setting, decent amount of seating and good flow in the dining room. All of the wait staff were super attentive, helpful with recommendations and looked to be genuinely interested in ensuring that you have the best experience while in their restaurant. I can honestly say that the fish quality was top notch, so fresh and flavorful. All of the dishes that we ordered had the right balance of flavor without being overly salted or sweetened. The plating and presentation for all of the orders, big and small, were thoughtful and helped to highlight the food. There is something for everyone on the menu, thus even for our family of 5, we were able to satisfy each and every single palate. All orders had the perfect portion size so that it wasn't too large of a serving, but yet, enough. If we had to pick highlights, the salmon sashimi, the spicy seafood ramen, the crispy rice with spicy tuna, the LA roll, and the kama all topped the list. I met a colleague friend for a lunch meeting at Sushi Kyo on a Friday. Sushi Kyo is located in the same plaza as Vons and Baskin Robbins, facing Myrtle, so you won't see it from the parking lot. We came at opening so it wasn't too busy. We were welcomed to a half booth and they brought us a complimentary spoon of tasty soup as an amuse bouche to get us started while we looked at the menu. The waitress was nice but could use more awareness. For instance when my colleague was clearly on his phone, she approached trying to take the order, I whispered that we aren't ready and did the phone motion, and she was like Oh! Anyways, we started off with the House Sake ($9.50/large) and the Calamari Tempura ($12). It was a nice snack. The tempura was a bit heavy and oily compared to other tempura batters. Oh another strange thing about the waitress, she only put down ONE ginger and wasabi. I had to ask for another one. This is the first ever sushi restaurant where they only gave me one for the table and not one per person. Not sure if it's their restaurant policy or a staff training issue. For our meal we decided to share a Double Hamachi Roll ($18.50) that has yellowtail inside and out and a Rainbow Roll ($16.50) that's like a California roll topped with tuna, salmon, shrimp, avocado. Glad we kept it fresh with our rolls. The quality of the fish was good for this tier of sushi. The rainbow roll is a classic, can't go wrong with the variety. I really liked the double hamachi roll. As we worked through our meal we ordered another House Sake ($5/small) to enjoy with the rest of the meal. So remember how I said the waitress was nice but lacked awareness?? Well... she was nice to refill my water BUT she spilled a significant amount of water on my Burberry bag that was sitting on the chair next to me. Leather doesn't like getting wet. Not to mention I had a few electronics with me. She said sorry but she didn't bother bringing me napkins or anything actually useful to soak up the water. Sigh. I had to use the napkin from my meal that wasn't as perfectly clean as I'd like because I didn't want a soaking wet purse. First time coming to this place and it was quite busy since it was a Friday night. We jumped on the waiting list and were seated per the wait time which was 25 mins. I felt bad coz I thought they forgot about us coz the wait list said we had 0 min wait and was next. We saw people seated before us but it's because they had reservations hehe. Sushi Kyo is one of the best sushi restaurants we've ever been to in California. Their quality is stellar. We ordered bento boxes with tempura, takoyaki, avocado rolls, Philadelphia rolls, spicy tuna rolls, pork katsu, and an additional side of curry. We also shared the lion king roll and an order of divine furikake fries. Additionally, they gave us a complimentary tasting of their luscious corn chowder soup. Overall, Sushi Kyo's current average of 4.7 stars holds up. If you ask me though, they really deserve more. The furikake fries and curry sauce are what shocked me the most. They were inspiringly good, with strong flavors that overwhelmed my senses. That said, you must pair the fries with the dipping sauce they provide. The pairing is what is perfect! Kyo's sushi is equally as excellent. However that's more expected. Their rolls have a gorgeous presentation with fresh, fantastic tastes to match. Their salad, tempura, and takoyaki are similarly solid. You really can't go wrong here. Or at least, we didn't. We do plan on frequenting again during our next nearby SoCal trip. read more

When a new sushi spot opens on Myrtle, you can count on me and my gals and I being there. I've been to Sushi Kyo a few times already, and all of the experiences have been great - service is exceptional, and their food is top-notch. This used to be a taco place, but the renovators transformed it to have a beautiful and calming interior dining space, with wood accents, lanterns for lights, soft light fixtures, black accent walls, all wrapped into be a cozy modern dining experience. I've had the pleasure of trying a variety of their menu and it's a biiiiggg menu offering let me tell you! My favorites have to be their Osaka Lover tower that comes with a variety of sashimi, sushi, and maki, and their Salmon Skin Hand Rolls. Their dishes here are served beautifully, and plating is definitely their skill set. I've also ordered their Osaka Sashimi Chirashi Bowl for myself before, which comes with miso soup, and a huge variety of sashimi. My friends have ordered their Soft Shell Crab, Furikake Fresh Fries, Zen Roll, Creamy Wasabi Salmon Sashimi, and their Chicken Bowl, and all loved their dish and finished every bite. I've also got to nibble on their dish, and I can attest, yes, they are just that good at everything. Not to mention, if we're in the mood for dessert, their Chocolate Truffle dessert, which is basically a big, rich chocolate truffle ice cream ball, dusted with cocoa powder, meets my "not too sweet" Asian taste buds and also satisfies my weekly need for chocolate. It's a must-try! We ATE and left no crumbs, literally. Sushi is good for your skin and good for your soul, and Sushi Kyo can prove that because I always leave feeling so happy. I will continue to believe that! My bestie and I are big fans of Mikomi Sushi down the street, but Sushi Kyo has us pretty hooked! Lately our choice has been Sushi Kyo. 4th time having dinner here. Food is still great, have not had anything that I can say is sub-par. However, the overall service is lacking a bit now. Last week, my wife and I ordered 2 rolls and asked twice for the sauces to be on the side. Both rolls came with sauce on them..... A little disappointing when you thought you made it clear and the wait staff repeats your order. They apologized and brought another 2 rolls 10 mins later (not bad time) with sauces on the side. Now its Memorial Day weekend. We went for our daughter's birthday dinner. On the Yelp waitlist it asks if any special occasions..... So we put birthday. None of the staff ever acknowledged our daughter's birthday even though we answered the question on the wait-list. Upon serving the food, they forgot one order. We ordered 2 beef bowls ( for 2 of our non-sushi eating guests...lol) they brought 1 order. 15 mins later we were eating and realize we were missing 1 beef bowl. I asked a staff member and they went to the kitchen snd came back saying they need 5 mins to make it. Obviously it was forgotten. Very disappointing when we are trying to celebrate a birthday. To top it off, there was a guy standing around by the cashier and then by the sushi chef's. Could be the owner or a manager....... Never lifted a hand to help anyone, barely smiled or speak to any guests. Just standing around with hands crossed at his waist. Not sure what he does there, but its a bad look by my account. Especially when the restaurant is full of customers and the rest of the staff were super busy. It's disappointing to see that. He should at least look friendly and greet guests. I think this place can use a little fine tuning...... both times when we experienced the mis step of service was during busy times. This is going to require a little more attention to detail as this restaurant has a great vibe and great food to go with it. I placed a large lunch order by calling the number listed on a Sushi Kyo business card in Monrovia. When I arrived, they said they never received my order. After checking, I realized I had called the wrong restaurant--the number actually belonged to Kamon in City of Industry. When I contacted Kamon, they said the order was already prepared and refused to cancel it. I agreed to pay but requested a discount, which they provided after speaking with a manager. Later, I placed a new order with Sushi Kyo and explained the situation, and they also offered a discount. Since the other location was too far from my home, I asked my parents to pick up the original order. However, when I called back, I was told that part of my order had already been given to other customers. Despite paying for the full order, I only received a portion of it. After multiple discussions, they eventually adjusted the order to match the amount I had paid. They were both extremely polite, friendly, and welcoming. Stacie escorted us to a lovely table in the center of the restaurant and immediately took our beverage orders while we glanced over the menu. Everything we ordered was AMAZING!! The edamame were delicious, super garlicky, and left me wanting more. The various rolls we requested were fresh, well-made, and delicious! Thank you to the sushi chefs. We truly enjoyed our dinner and left feeling extremely satisfied. The service we received during our visit was EXCELLENT! My parents love their Kyo Chirashi bowl, it comes with miso and all orders come with a complimentary corn soup. Fresh rolls shine, salmon inari is a pleasant surprise, but sashimi quality is hit-or-miss and doesn't fully meet expectations for a newer spot. I asked for extra wasabi, ponzu, and ginger, and they happily included everything, which I always appreciate. The menu has a good variety, so I ordered several specialty rolls (baked, fresh, and specials), along with inari and sashimi. Food-wise, it was a mixed bag. It was my first time trying inari, and it ended up being a highlight--both the salmon and negitoro versions were delicious, though the negitoro wasn't as fresh as I expected and I've had better. I had high hopes for the sashimi given that this is a newer restaurant (opened late 2025), but it fell a bit short. The salmon and yellowtail were okay (around a 3.5/5), while the rest of the Osaka sashimi was pretty mediocre. The baked salmon roll was just alright and skippable; I'd stick to the fresh rolls instead. My favorites were the OMG roll, double hamachi, maui roll, and salmonizer roll. I was looking for a sushi spot in Monrovia to celebrate my daughter's birthday since we were already going to be in the area. As always, I rely heavily on fellow Yelpers to help navigate new restaurant experiences, and based on the reviews, Sushi Kyo was her top choice. I'm so glad we went! They appear to be in the middle of a soft opening, possibly to test menu items, service, and gather feedback but let me start by saying WOW. From the outside, it looks like an average sushi spot, but there is absolutely nothing average about this place. I loved the giant menu display in the front window. As soon as you walk in, you're hit with upscale, trendy vibes paired with a jazzy playlist that perfectly sets the mood. We were seated immediately and given menus. It wasn't crowded, which I didn't expect on a Tuesday evening anyway. While we were looking over the menu, we were brought a complimentary corn soup, which was absolutely delicious. The menu is extensive and a little overwhelming (in the best way), but I eventually narrowed down our choices. I really wanted to try their inari but wasn't sure which one to order, so I asked our server for a recommendation. She suggested the spicy salmon inari, and wow rice tucked into a sweet tofu pocket topped with buttery, melt-in-your-mouth salmon. The spice from the salmon paired perfectly with the sweetness of the tofu. Such a well-balanced bite. We also ordered the Lion King roll, Salmonizer roll, Sunrise roll, and the Seared Lime Pepper Salmon roll, along with hot green tea. Every dish was not only beyond delicious, but beautifully plated and thoughtfully presented. You can tell real care goes into how the food looks when it arrives at the table it was almost too pretty to eat (almost!). The freshness and quality of the ingredients truly shine through. For four rolls, the inari, and hot green tea, our total came out to $83, which felt very reasonable given the quality, portion sizes, presentation, and overall experience. To top off the night, our server surprised my daughter with a somanco which is a fish-shaped waffle green tea ice cream sandwich for her birthday. Such a thoughtful and sweet gesture that really made the experience special. As the evening went on, more guests came in and it became fairly busy for just two servers. Despite that, the service never skipped a beat. They stayed attentive, checked on us consistently, and we never had to ask for anything. The food came out promptly, and the service remained warm and professional the entire time. I live in Pomona, and I can confidently say that Sushi Kyo is now my go-to spot whenever I'm craving sushi. We stopped by sushi kyo right before the end of 2025 for their soft opening and were surprised by how busy it was! Luckily we were able to grab a table on the "booth" side. Their menu is quite extensive! Lots of goodies to look at - it almost made choosing what to eat quite hard as everything looked delicious. We ended up getting a couple of speciality rolls, the salmon skin salad, the garlic green beans, the bulgogi bowl, and a dessert! My seared lime pepper roll was pretty good. I was reminded that I'm not that big of a fan of seared sushi but the taste was great! They also provide plenty of wasabi and ginger in the side; but I have to say the star of the show were the salmon salad (and dessert but I'll circle back to that). The salad it was fresh and crunchy, not at all fishy, and had the perfect salad dressing to finish it off. As for the green beans and rice bowl, they were not that memorable, with the green beans being too soft and the bulgogi bowl being more on the tasteless side. And now *drumroll* the dessert! We got the kids bear dessert and thought it was a chocolate cake but were surprised to find that it's a scoop of ice cream! I don't know where the ice cream is from but dang was it creamy and not too sweet (the recipe for delicious!). Will definitely be back to try their lunch specials + more! A welcomed addition to Monrovia as a wonderful sushi restaurant where the fish taste more expensive than the price. Starting off, we had the hanpen cheese that was recommended by one of the servers. I'm glad this was recommended because I would have never thought to order this. Very nice crunch with a very delicately cooked soft fish mixed with cheese in the inside with a great sauce. I highly recommend. The show of show of course was their Kyo sushi combo. Essentially you're getting omakase style fresh fish all at once with a very affordable price for the quality you are getting. I can't complain about any of the dishes as they all tasted great. The highlights of the combo was definitely the bluefin and the ikura. I have never had ikura taste so smooth and all the umami of a fatty fish but none to see visually. The ikura was one of the most fresh I had and did not have an overwhelming fish taste. The only critic for the combo is I wish they ordered the fish in the order you should eat them especially for someone who has less experience for sushi. Overall, I would love to come back and it's a great new establishment with great decorations that would be both good for a date night or a fun group setting. read more

This place seriously hit the mark. It's a newer spot (only about 6 months old), but they're already doing things right. The ambiance is clean, modern, and really inviting - great for a casual meal or even a nicer night out. From the first bite, you can tell they're using fresh ingredients and actually care about how everything comes together. The standout for me was the OMG Roll... super flavorful, well-balanced, and just one of those rolls you keep thinking about after you leave. The Monrovia Roll was just as good in a different way - fresh, clean, and really let the quality of the fish shine. Everything tasted fresh, the portions were solid, and nothing felt overly heavy or drowned in sauce. Just really well-executed sushi all around. read more
