I've been here twice and tried the fresh sashimi roll ( this one is rolled in cucumber no rice which I love!), Red dragon roll, BSC Roll, ribeye skewer and my daughter got the kids meal. I try to eat low carb keto and I like that this restaurant has a lot of options like the fresh sashimi roll, poke bowls, meat skewers and a very delicious looking menu of sashimi. We were on the waitlist waited over 1.5hours with 0 people ahead of us. We were passed up numerous times for our party of 6. We have been repeat customers and would always sit in Joon section. Joon is an amazing waiter and the only good thing about this restaurant. The manager SUE BLATANTLY LIED to our faces making several statements that we would be seated next, however sat another party of 6 ahead of us, and then a party of 2. Several people who came in after us were seated before. It seemed as if our country of origin had something to do with it, and theirs were preferred. We drove over an hour to eat at this restaurant from where we live however will not be coming back. If the owners do actually read this please look into how this is being dealt with. It is a shame because as stated before Joon was a great waiter and lost out on income due to the manager SUEs negligence. If you have no self respect and like to be lied to like a ln abusive relationship then this is the place for you, if not I would avoid due to this experience. Do with information what you will. Sushi Kyo has been such a great addition to old town Monrovia! My friend and I stopped by for lunch and promptly started with the Kyo Sashimi, which came out beautifully presented! Our favorites from that dish were the otoro, salmon, and yellowtail but everyone else was also fresh and delicious! We also ordered the seared lime pepper salmon roll and the paradise roll and both were really good! But the seared lime pepper salmon roll was the standout for us as it had so much flavor in every bite and was generously filled with lots of fish! It was exceptional. We tried chicken yakitori skewer, fried squid leg Baked green mussel as well as a couple of rolls. We ordered Bora bora, Salmon with blue crab, Double hamachi roll, Zen roll,Albacore tataki roll, and Popcorn roll. My goodness! All the rolls were so savory, very fresh, high quality and the portion was generous. We also got Halibut carpaccio with black truffle. It was creamy, aromatic and savory. For desserts, we got: Chocolate truffle, but the server recommended Pistachio truffle too. We ended up ordering both. I am glad we did! Honestly, new favorite spot for bento boxes and sushi! I came with a family of 9 and we called 20 minutes ahead of time and they were happy to save us a table. We were seated in a sort of intimate spot in the corner of the restaurant that "isolates" us from the rest of the restaurant. We were checked on so many times and it never felt like service was short. We were given recommendations since it was our first time here and they were all delicious! We ordered 5 bento boxes and upgraded 2 of them to the sashimi. We also shared 1 noodle dish and 3 different rolls. Sushi Kyo did an amazing job renovating this space. It has changed over a lot over the years and this is the best iteration yet. Food wise, they have a LOT of options and I would definitely say that is one of their upsides. The place is clearly Korean-owned, like most of the Japanese restaurants in Monrovia, and you can tell by the way they serve the food and some of food options like Bulgogi. I went with a large group, most of us Japanese American or mixed Japanese American and everyone seemed pretty happy with their food. Service was really good too. Been meaning to try this place for a long time, but I kept forgetting about it. Finally went, and unfortunately I was not impressed. The good - they are part of a large strip mall in Monrovia, so finding a parking spot is easy enough. Also, service is very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is also nicely designed and looks good overall. Too bad the food was so meh. We each got 3 item bento boxes. One bento was chicken katsu, chicken karaage, and calamari tempura. Everything was okay, but their tempura batter isn't very good and they do not have any white meat chicken, which is a minus for me. If you don't want the soup or salad, they will give you more rice. The second bento was salmon teriyaki, mixed tempura, and shrimp shumai. The teriyaki was okay. The tempura was the same disappointing batter, and the shrimp shumai are giant, overly fishy, and mushy. The final bento was beef teriyaki, shrimp tempura (give up the veggies and get a third shrimp tempura), along with the same yucky shrimp shumai. The beef teriyaki was actually just fine if nothing special. Still, I'd eat this again. The shrimp tempura had the same unsatisfactory batter. And, well the shumai were the same as the other ones - not good at all. They were so fishy and it was a Sunday, so I actually sent them back after one bite and just had them taken off the bill. Maybe there are better dishes. We don't eat sushi, so I can't speak to that. I just know that except for the beef teriyaki I doubt that I'd rush back for anything. Not the best, not the worst. This restaurant has the best Japanese food /sushi for the price and quality. I have been here over 5 times already. I have their waitlist QR code saved in my phone so that I can always check the line. My favorite is the seared salmon sashimi-- super fresh and you can taste the nice char from the grill. The interior was clean and modern, but doesnt look like there are too many tables so if it gets busy there will probably be a wait. The service was okay, I would have liked if they had asked if we had been there before and gone over the menu a little bit. Heads up: if youre going here to try the yakitori they only serve it from 4pm-11pm. The food we ordered was the unagi bowl, curry with pork cutlet, a bento box, and their lunch sushi platter. Might be my new favorite sushi place. Service is quick and all the servers are friendly. Sushi is fresh and relatively good deal for the quality you get. You also get free corn soup right when you sit down. Place is pretty spacious. I've come for lunch and the lunch special was decent. Loved the dressing on the side salad they give you. And the lunch bento comes with miso soup. I came again tonight for dinner to try their yakitori which is only available after 4pm and food was spot on again. I saw them putting our reserved signs on tables so I'm assuming they take reservations. Yakitori was decent. I wasn't blown away but it was good. The chicken was just cooked. Like I saw a tiny bit of pink from what could just be how they cook it but I mean I wasn't sure but it tasted fine and I haven't gotten sick yet so yes I rolled the dice with that one. My son got the poke bowl and it was pretty big. Nothing special other than the size. I got the maki bento - salmon, fatty tuna, yellowtail and crab - and I added the sushi. I could have just done with two rolls but my eyes were bigger than my stomach. The salmon and fatty tuna were the best. Yellowtail was pretty good. Crab was mildly disappointing. My favorite is the sweet shrimp sushi. Fresh and they deep fry the head. I got it automatically the first time I came but had to ask for it the second time. That was my only complaint. Well that and they only have two single stall restrooms which is always a pet peeve of mine for restaurants but I did see a line for the men's restroom (total surprise since it's always the women who have to wait) and a waitress told the men they could just use the women's one. This has become one of my favorite spots for casual sushi in the SGV. I've been here a few times now and they consistently serve quality sushi and sashimi. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, and pretty spacious, so I've never had to wait for a table. I've tried a good mix of items here. The lemon roll was solid, and the Kyo sashimi mix has a nice variety of fish. We also tried both the Osaka chirashi and the Kyo chirashi. The Osaka is more of your standard chirashi with a good variety and solid portion. If you're feeling a little fancier, go for the Kyo chirashi. It comes with higher quality cuts and a more premium selection overall. Both were really good, and the sushi rice here is on point. I've also had their bento box where you can choose 2 to 3 items. We went with tempura, salmon kama, and albacore, and everything was delicious. One thing I really like is they give nice thick cuts of sashimi, even for pricier items like toro. The servers are always super nice which makes the experience even better. Overall, I think this place hits a really good balance. I read all the great reviews for this newer restaurant in Downtown Monrovia, so had to try it out. The food, service and atmosphere were all great, 5 stars all around. Modern setting, decent amount of seating and good flow in the dining room. All of the wait staff were super attentive, helpful with recommendations and looked to be genuinely interested in ensuring that you have the best experience while in their restaurant. I can honestly say that the fish quality was top notch, so fresh and flavorful. All of the dishes that we ordered had the right balance of flavor without being overly salted or sweetened. The plating and presentation for all of the orders, big and small, were thoughtful and helped to highlight the food. There is something for everyone on the menu, thus even for our family of 5, we were able to satisfy each and every single palate. All orders had the perfect portion size so that it wasn't too large of a serving, but yet, enough. If we had to pick highlights, the salmon sashimi, the spicy seafood ramen, the crispy rice with spicy tuna, the LA roll, and the kama all topped the list. I met a colleague friend for a lunch meeting at Sushi Kyo on a Friday. Sushi Kyo is located in the same plaza as Vons and Baskin Robbins, facing Myrtle, so you won't see it from the parking lot. We came at opening so it wasn't too busy. We were welcomed to a half booth and they brought us a complimentary spoon of tasty soup as an amuse bouche to get us started while we looked at the menu. The waitress was nice but could use more awareness. For instance when my colleague was clearly on his phone, she approached trying to take the order, I whispered that we aren't ready and did the phone motion, and she was like Oh! Anyways, we started off with the House Sake ($9.50/large) and the Calamari Tempura ($12). It was a nice snack. The tempura was a bit heavy and oily compared to other tempura batters. Oh another strange thing about the waitress, she only put down ONE ginger and wasabi. I had to ask for another one. This is the first ever sushi restaurant where they only gave me one for the table and not one per person. Not sure if it's their restaurant policy or a staff training issue. For our meal we decided to share a Double Hamachi Roll ($18.50) that has yellowtail inside and out and a Rainbow Roll ($16.50) that's like a California roll topped with tuna, salmon, shrimp, avocado. Glad we kept it fresh with our rolls. The quality of the fish was good for this tier of sushi. The rainbow roll is a classic, can't go wrong with the variety. I really liked the double hamachi roll. As we worked through our meal we ordered another House Sake ($5/small) to enjoy with the rest of the meal. So remember how I said the waitress was nice but lacked awareness?? Well... she was nice to refill my water BUT she spilled a significant amount of water on my Burberry bag that was sitting on the chair next to me. Leather doesn't like getting wet. Not to mention I had a few electronics with me. She said sorry but she didn't bother bringing me napkins or anything actually useful to soak up the water. Sigh. I had to use the napkin from my meal that wasn't as perfectly clean as I'd like because I didn't want a soaking wet purse. Everything was delicious especially the miso soup. Everything we ordered was AMAZING!! The edamame were delicious, super garlicky, and left me wanting more. The various rolls we requested were fresh, well-made, and delicious! When a new sushi spot opens on Myrtle, you can count on me and my gals and I being there. I've been to Sushi Kyo a few times already, and all of the experiences have been great - service is exceptional, and their food is top-notch. This used to be a taco place, but the renovators transformed it to have a beautiful and calming interior dining space, with wood accents, lanterns for lights, soft light fixtures, black accent walls, all wrapped into be a cozy modern dining experience. I've had the pleasure of trying a variety of their menu and it's a biiiiggg menu offering let me tell you! My favorites have to be their Osaka Lover tower that comes with a variety of sashimi, sushi, and maki, and their Salmon Skin Hand Rolls. Their dishes here are served beautifully, and plating is definitely their skill set. I've also ordered their Osaka Sashimi Chirashi Bowl for myself before, which comes with miso soup, and a huge variety of sashimi. My friends have ordered their Soft Shell Crab, Furikake Fresh Fries, Zen Roll, Creamy Wasabi Salmon Sashimi, and their Chicken Bowl, and all loved their dish and finished every bite. I've also got to nibble on their dish, and I can attest, yes, they are just that good at everything. Not to mention, if we're in the mood for dessert, their Chocolate Truffle dessert, which is basically a big, rich chocolate truffle ice cream ball, dusted with cocoa powder, meets my "not too sweet" Asian taste buds and also satisfies my weekly need for chocolate. It's a must-try! We ATE and left no crumbs, literally. Sushi is good for your skin and good for your soul, and Sushi Kyo can prove that because I always leave feeling so happy. I will continue to believe that! My bestie and I are big fans of Mikomi Sushi down the street, but Sushi Kyo has us pretty hooked! Lately our choice has been Sushi Kyo. I hope they offer some sort of outdoor dining experience soon so fellow dog owners can bring their dogs, too!
