Visited on a Sunday afternoon with absolutely no wait time. The restaurant was spacious, spotless, and had a very welcoming atmosphere. The staff was attentive and engaging, especially when helping us decide what to try from the menu. The spicy fried chicken was tasty, though I was hoping for a bit more heat. The calamari tempura was fried perfectly -- light, crispy, and honestly one of the highlights of the meal. The Shrek roll was incredibly fresh and served nicely chilled. My only complaint was the katsu chicken, which came with way too much curry sauce and overpowered the dish a bit. Decided to try a new sushi restaurant in the Monrovia area! Kiku Sushi is a little hole in the wall that I would definitely recommend. I will say that they have quite a big menu and it was hard to select food, but it does give you a lot of options! I got the dinner combination with sashimi, the Philadelphia roll, and spicy tuna roll. My fiancé got a variety of sushi as well. It's funny because he rates sushi restaurants depending on how good their salmon and tuna are. He really loved the salmon but he found the tuna was just "okay" In my opinion, the sushi is good, but it's not the greatest. It doesn't have that "melt in your mouth" factor that I look for in sushi restaurants but it's also not bad at the same time. The servers though were very attentive and I didn't have to get their attention at all. Also we got our food very quickly which was nice! I'd come back if I was in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to make the extra drive. read more

This was my 3rd time at Kiku sushi. I live relatively close by but today's experience reminded me why I rarely ever come here. I got the honeymoon roll and it was no rice and 95% imitation crab. The takoyaki is small and not circular - the piece I ate didn't have any octopus inside either. The salmon collar was just average- nothing special. Service was fine. They weren't super attentive but were friendly enough. Food takes a good 10 minutes to come out. Parking is free and ample in the large shared plaza parking lot. read more

The green tea is perfectly steeped and comes in a very large tea mug. You get a free refill too! Started with the BEST miso soup I've had. I know--miso is miso is miso, right? Wrong! The flavor and consistency of the broth bring a Mmmmm to your mouth! The sushi came out quick and tasted so fresh. Definitely try the cilantro roll with jalapeño. It has just enough kick to know it's in there, but doesn't overwhelm the roll so you can enjoy all the other flavors. It's a quaint spot so depending on the time of day you might have to wait a bit. **Rating this experience with a small child** Here we are on another weekly outing with my 4 year old. This time we gave Kiku Sushi a try. Unfortunately my son gave it a thumbs down and said he doesn't want to come back :( But I must say, it's definitely not the worse place we've been to. This place was decent. Interior was cozy. Service was friendly. Food came out fast. I guess our complaint was the quality of the food. We've been to a lot of strip-mall sushi spots (and my expectations are never high), some better than others, so we have a bit to compare. I ordered the chirashi which was a bit...odd... the fish cut was too thick and it tasted very bland. I didn't eat it all. The chicken karage was a bit chewy and it tasted like the oil has been used a few times (to be expected I guess). My son give it a thumbs down on the cucumber rolls. This tasted like dirt. Also, the authentic cucumber rolls (kappa-maki) are made with one slice of cucumber, not a bunch of shredded cucumber, which makes it taste watery. It was so bad that we returned it and got it taken off the bill. The best part was the chocolate macaroon ice cream. I debated between 2 or 3 stars, but gave it 3 because of the friendly service, and that our server didn't hesitate when I asked to remove the cucumber roll. I do wish they cleaned our table after we were done, so we didn't have to stare at dirty dishes while we ate the macaroon and paid the bill. Unfortunately we won't be back. read more

The servers always checked on you and they were very accommodating with giving my daughter her separate bowl and plastic utensils for her udon. I had the Teriyaki Salmon, Mixed Tempura, and Crunch Spicy Tuna Roll. The wife had the Grilled Mackerel, Mixed Tempura, and Salmon Roll. The rolls alone were a whole portion and not a small portion to accommodate the low bento price. We honestly could not finish this whole meal ourselves even with an empty stomach! I used to get takeout at Kiku Sushi in Monrovia all the time with my family. Unfortunately, on my last visit things had clearly changed -- I believe there was a new owner because the quality dropped dramatically. The first thing I noticed was the wasabi had zero spice -- I put the whole glob in and felt nothing. My go-to beef teriyaki, which I've ordered for years, was so chewy it was inedible. The cucumber salad had no vinegar at all, and the miso soup tasted synthetic. I paid $17.99 for a meal I could barely eat. My whole family agreed the experience has gone downhill. Sadly, this place used to be a reliable spot for us, but after this visit we won't be returning. read more
