I got married last week at the W in Hoboken, which was super awesome--but also fancy. For the rehearsal dinner we wanted something casual, warm, friendly, and delicious. What could be better than a pizza party? We looked up a ton of places (we are from NJ originally but don't live there anymore), and landed on Dozzino. Talked to Marc, and it was clear it was the choice. They pulled off our party without a hitch. Pizzas were fast, delicious, we fit 75 people in for food and speeches--it was EXACTLY what we wanted. I really, really wanted to like Dozzino! I really, really did. After all, it's four blocks from my place and I have been waiting for a cool place to open off of the main drag for years! But I just cannot let someone else waste their one "date night" of the week going to this place. I am being honest and objective and am going to lay it out like it is in hopes Dozzino owners listen and take constructive criticism into account. 1) There is no place to talk to the hostess. We had to stand awkwardly in the door next to someone's table and walk around looking for a server to put us on the wait list. 2) There is ZERO ambiance in the place. The walls are white and bare with a huge screen tv next to the "bar" area and one in the back room. A big screen TV does NOT equal ambiance or decor people (and they weren't even on)! 3) We were seated in the back room where there are two long, pine tables. The chairs are a good six inches to a foot too short for the tall, wood bench style tables. The table came up to our chests. We felt like little kids at the table. That being said there is nothing to break up the noise in the back room. My boyfriend and I were yelling at each other and still couldn't hear each other. We were going to just get up and go but thankfully were moved to the "bar" area. 4) They served our water out of a rusty water jar. We had to point it out to the waitress and she apologized and said they aren't supposed to do that anymore (but she served it to us anyway). 5)They were all out of food at 8:30pm on a Friday. They did not have brushetaa, or many of the crostinis left, they did not have salad or the pizza we wanted. 6) NONE OF THIS WOULD REALLY MATTER IF THE PIZZA WAS GOOD! It was just ok at best. My boyfriend's pizza was a bit tastier than mine (He had the sopresatta) and I had a white pizza with onions and kalmata olives. My pizza had such little taste I ordered a side of sauce. It tasted like watered down tomato paste and didn't do anything to help. I left half of my pizza there it was so bad. All in all, we were really disappointed and will not go back again. The pizza had little to no flavor and left much to be desired. What a let down. Why can't anyone in Hoboken get it right. Hire a professional to help you so that the restaurant isn't so amateur. Bland food. Bad service. Hazy. Hot. Humid. Loud. My girlfriend and I ate here on New Year's Eve. The food was tasteless and half their menu was not available to order. We decided to give it a second chance a few weeks ago as we always see it packed with people when we walk by (though it seemed it was mostly kid parties and personal family who ate there as they frequently closed for family events). Were we missing something? We invited another couple to join us. When we arrived, we were told there would be a 30 minute wait. Two minutes later, the host came back and said a table would be ready in 5 minutes. Two minutes later, he told us he made a mistake and the wait would be 30 minutes. We were seated 45 minutes later. The noise was deafening and there was no AC so we sweat waiting for our menus. No one came. We had to ask for menus. We waited to order. No one came. We told the host we were ready to order. No one came. After 10 more minutes, the waiter dressed in basketball shoes, shorts, Knick shirt and hat went to take the order of a couple who came in after us. So, we got up and left never seeing whether their food is still bland and tasteless or if they had a bad night on New Year's Eve. We will never find out as we will never go back. read more

I reside in BK and this restaurant was my first introduction to Hoboken cuisine. I must say... BYOB (for starters). Decor is modern yet cozy. Staff is attentive and friendly yet do not hover. Most importantly THE FOOD is simple, fresh and super tasty. Recession considered, it is apparent they did not cut costs when it came to quality ingredients. Completely worth the TWO river commute. After this weekend, I will never visit Dozzino again. I live in the neighborhood and was happy to see this place opened up. I will admit that the food is tasty (although the menu is lean) but the treatment? Disappointing. A couple months ago, not only did my friends and I wait an HOUR to be seated but then found out there were only a certain amount of pies left. This past weekend, I had made a reservation for my birthday dinner. My party was 15 minutes late due to parking problems, but when we showed up, they had already given our 10-person table away to 3 people. Not only that, they said they only had 5 pies left to cook. WHAT? It's Saturday night at 8:15 and you only have 5 balls of dough left? I apologized for being late, but there should be a bit of a grace period in the restaurant business...after all, it WAS my birthday. I was disappointed not only in the fact that there was no room, not enough food, but the way I was being spoken to. If you're hungry after 8 pm, DON'T go to Dozzino. read more

Chef literally took a poop in the customer bathroom, announced he did it and he still had his gloves on. Disgusting. Also, the chef was drinking at 730 pm in view of all the customers literally chugging a beer. On top of all of that, our waitress was horrendous. She couldn't even walk around our large group table to take orders and instead made us yell across our order and just shrugged when she couldn't hear it. All of the pizza was burnt and not in a good Naples way. Just literally burnt to a crisp. We also had to wait 45 minutes for our table when we had a reservation and they just laughed about it and said "too bad, there are regulars here". At the end, we asked for pizza to go and they wouldn't even give us a box which they use for delivery, they put our food in wax paper in a bag. How do places like this get away with that kind of customer service? Please do yourself a favor and stay clear. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I would never go back to this place. It was like being on an episode of Restaurant Impossible. We had a big group, and our pizzas didn't have the toppings we order on them. When we told the waiter this he said he couldn't do anything and said the owner would talk to us. After 20 minutes, the owner didn't come, so we inquired again, and the owner came out. He didn't say sorry, did not try to make things right. Instead he defended his food, basically said that's how he makes them and that's that. He argued with us. It's like he thinks he's god's gift to pizza? The soup nazi or something. If you say the pizza has a topping on it and two of those pizzas don't and your customers complain, you say sorry, let me fix it. Instead, he basically says we're wrong. After arguing he did take the pizzas off the bill, which is what he should have done in the first place, instead of ruining our dinner by arguing with us and giving us excuses why he was right and we were wrong. Now he has about 8 people who will never go there again, and this yelp review. How's the pizza? The crust is decent and the toppings are extremely skimpy, even for neopolitan pizza, which I eat quite often. Save your money and your evening and go elsewhere. If you want excellent neopolitan pizza, there are about a dozen places in Manhattan with much better food and service. Motorino and Keste would be near the top of the list. I hope this guy changes his attitude and realizes he's running a restaurant, not a temple where people come to worship his creations. But it's pretty unlikely. read more

I'm not sure what people are looking for when they come here. These reviews have left me disappointingly surprised. Dozzino is a spin off of what real pizza is like in Italy. If you're looking for frozen dough and ingredients that are slapped on last minute and heated up, maybe people should consider Domino's instead. But if you want authentic pizza that has its own character, then Dozzino is where you want to be. The menu is simple and the best restaurants keep their menus simple. If you have a menu with thirty items, you can guarantee that what you're eating won't be fresh. Dozzino, from what I've come to learn, does not have the traditional freezers and fridges to store their inventory in. What do you get from that? A superb taste in every bite, because the items haven't had time to sit in inventory for more than a few hours. Keeping it simple is what Dozzino does right and that is exactly what most restaurants in the world (the bests) do. They offer 3 or 4 dishes for each course and they provide each ingredient at its peak freshness. Dozzino has the feel and taste that will bring its customers back again and again. I went Sunday for lunch with a buddy. I'm obsessed with pizza, and have been to many of the best spots out there(difara's, rubirosa, co). I've enjoyed this pizza as much as any of my recent favorites. Psyched there's something like this close to my home. The pizza here is delicious. Very fresh and simple ingredients. The crust is light and delicious. We had the cherry tomato, basil pizza. Very simple and light tasting. We also had a pie with sopresetta which was also extremely tasty. On food alone, this will probably become my go to pizza spot in Hoboken. Its what I look for in pizza. Fresh ingredients, light delicious crust. They obviously care about quality food and they're bringing authentic Italian pizza, which Hoboken could use. I look forward to trying the Mortadella pizza and some of the pizzas off the menu. I spent an hour or so drinking an awesome cappuchino(definitely get a coffee) and talking with the owner Mark about the restaurant, about Pizza, and he's definitely passionate about it. Its nice to see a chef care and have vision and knowledge about what he's making. Hopefully Hobokenites will be able to appreciate this for what it is, and not treat this like your local slice pizzeria. Looking forward to coming back soon. read more

We had the worst experience hosting a party at this mediocre at best pizza place. The owner, Marc, does not know how to run a restaurant or handle a private party. He completely under ordered food for our party and had no one there to manage our party that day. In fact, when our party arrived and they knew that there wasn't enough food - they did nothing expect demand that we pay for service that wasn't provided. How do you even run out of pizza - your a pizza place?! They clearly couldn't handle our party, or any party, in my opinion. The wait staff was incompetent and it was a complete disaster. Even worse was the food; what little they made was gross and inedible - the pasta with roasted tomatoes was not freshly prepared and instead tasted like Ragu from a store bought sauce. We were so embarrassed with how Dozzino handled our party. Many guests left early because there was no food and it was such an embarrassment. Living in Hoboken as a local for many years, it is shocking to me how such a place still can be in business. Turns out from our convos with many people afterwards that Dozzino has lots of problems with running out of food and poorly managed parties in the past - wish we knew that before we made the mistake of trusting them with our own party. I wish I could give Dozzino's zero stars. My boyfriend and I went the Sunday after Thanksgiving for a quick pizza as I had been bragging about what an awesome place i THOUGHT Dozzino's was. We get there one other table is about to leave and no one else is in the restauant, thinking it would not be a big deal to sit at a communal table I went to sit- and was rudely told that we needed to sit at a two person- okay fine. We were then ignored- until someone came over with plates glasses and a wine key- stupid me I actually thought they would open our wine- i was wrong. We then asked about salads- yeah they had none- okay fine it is the sunday after Thanksgiving. We then had to give our pizza order by yelling over to the FOUR men just standing around- no one actually came to our table(I am not kidding you). The pizza comes- its fine. Not one person came over to see if we needed anything- they just continued to stand around making coffee for themselves and play on their cell phones while also screaming over the soccer match. WE were so uncomfortable we rushed our meal and boxed it up-when we asked for a box it was if we were putting them out further. It was the rudest worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant- why we didnt just go to Johnny Pepperoni's or one of the other places is my fault. We will never go back and I can not believe I had been raving about this place. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. read more

My boyfriend and I first went to Dozzino's about a year ago based on a recommendation from friends. The atmosphere was great and the food was OK, but a lot of it (espeically the meatballs) came out cold. We decided tonight to give it another shot. The overall expereience was terrible: we showed up around 7PM and were told there were no tables on the outdoor back patio and decided to wait (told 15 - 20 mins). A group of 6 came probably 15 minutes after us and got seated out there right away (at a table for 2-4 people; a table we could have been seated at). We soon realized this was because that group was friends with the staff. Once we finally were seated (30 minutes later), we waited 20 minutes before our waitress came over. At this point we had received no water, and no menus (menus we were never even actually given), although she had visited the group next to us mutiple times. Finally we placed our order: 2 apps, 2 pizzas (we waited so long at the bar we already knew what we wanted). The entire time we were seated (about 45 minutes) we were only visited once: when we placed our order. In that time we waited, the group next to us (who knew the staff) not only got special appetizers from the kitchen, but received SEVEN pizzas before we finally had to ask about our pizzas in which we were told that "our ticket must have gotten lost". I am all for giving special treatment to friends who visit your place of business, but they ordered their pizzas AFTER us, and to make other customers feel so undervalued and treat them rudely was completely unacceptable. I will never come back to Dozzino's again. read more
