Every time I took my car into him it was at least $1000 or much much more, for even minor things. Then finally I wised up and started going to the dealer and realized the dealer was way cheaper and did a better job. In addition to that, the dealer gives you a loaner car. Before you blindly give him your car, talk with the dealer first if you are able. You will probably be saving yourself money. I have been to my fair share of car shops around Los Angeles and thought I was getting a deal or thought they were great because they were nice, but it wasn't until I was recommended to Vasken that I realized what superb customer service is in the car repair industry. I didn't realize the underlying issues that were building up in my car over time because of the poor quality work from other car repair shops, but Vasken took a detailed look at my car and laid it out flat. I needed a new part, which was going to cost me about $700, I needed some lights fixed and fuse issues taken care of. This news was not fun to hear, but Vasken set me at ease. He found a beautifully working, lightly used part I needed which saved me $300, and he gave me a great deal to fix the remaining issues. 5 days to fix ended up only 3, and when I came back to my car it looked brand new- he had washed, waxed everything including detailing the tires, he lightly washed the inside of my car, cleaned the AC filter and told me to come back in for a check-up in a few days all FREE OF CHARGE. A few days later I got a letter in the mail from Vasken & Co. appreciating me that I came to them to get my car fixed. These polite, smart and good humored gentlemen that work there go 100% out of their way to not only fix your car, but actually have a really good time throughout the process- which is almost unheard of because getting a car fixed is usually worse than the dentist. Right after Firestone wanted to change the whole ignition system of my '95 SL500, I stopped by at Doctor Auto Tech to get a second opinion. Surprise, surprise... It was not the ignition making my beloved car unreliable, the "crankshaft position sensor" went bad. Dr. Vasken got my car running again in less than two days and saved me around $2,000. Dr. Vasken and his entire team are not just mechanics, they do really care for you and your car. They will not only remember your name but also the history of your car (which I think is extremely important if you own a 20 year old sports car). I do my own mechanical work to a certain extent, unfortunately I don't own a Ross-tech scanner or a cable to diagnose my problem, found this place and had good reviews (without looking through them all) looked at his website and it says free diagnostics, I called to get a feel of the dude, to see if they are one of those con-artist mechanics or not, first thing the guy said is "We charge $190 to plug it into a computer " from there, repair charges will be added on, to hook up a vag-com and getting the codes is a minutes work, So He is basically charging $190 per minute, while his website and some reviewer stated free diagnostics, so I thought it'd be catastrophic if I let this man work on my car. Got curious and looked through all the reviews, I truly believe all the negative reviewers, Out of 17 reviews, the four 1-2 star ratings shined so bright that I did not want to even give this guy a chance, when one of his customer took him to small claims court and lost, that is a red signal, I don't like to be ripped off or have my car getting lien, which basically becomes his car, if you don't pay what he says you owe plus storage fees, which any shops charge $20-50/day after certain amount of days without paying and picking up their car, another reviewer says those old 90's Benz in his showroom are his trophies from people who couldn't or didn't want to pay their bill on time and became his property The man calls himself a doctor or a surgeon, that alone throws out a yellow card, unless you have a degree and licensed to practice medicine or perform surgery, you are not a doctor or a surgeon, it may appeal to the rich people, but to a guy that used to be a mechanic, it's more appalling and a turn off. One last thing, this guy may say the diagnostic can't be done in a minute to the people who don't know squat about cars, here is the procedure, plug in the scanner to the OBD II port (1 second) and click system scan (1 second), wait til the computer pulls the fault code (30 seconds tops), print it out (10 seconds)and you're done in roughly a minute. I ended up buying a used Ross-tech cable for the same price as his minute scan of $190 and I'm planning on fixing the issue by myself. read more

I strongly urge anyone looking for a mechanic to ask friends or neighbors for recommendations. It's the best way to (hopefully) find an honest one. We all know there are too many shady ones out there. I'm fairly new to the area and hadn't asked around like I should have. Stupid me. "Dr." Auto Tech are total LIARS. It's a sad world when we can't trust people.. even those who claim to be good Christians. We discussed religion a few months ago when I came in for an oil change.... mainly because I'm also Orthodox and they are Armenian Orthodox. I had already spent nearly $1,000 for a radiator and 2 oil changes at THIS shop in the last year. They are pricey but I never thought they would take advantage of a regular customer (or anyone else) to the degree that I discovered. I figured they might charge more, but not nearly double what others charge. Recently, my car wouldn't start right away. I'd have to wait a few minutes and try again.... and then a 3rd time and it would start. They said it was the starter and quoted $650-$700. Based on the fact that we had talked and discussed religion during my last visit, I was stupid enough to believe that this high price was the going rate because religious people wouldn't lie, right? Hahaha. Very funny. I thought the charge was steep but still returned a few days later. Big mistake. I was dropping it off and just as I was walking away, one of his assistants (or family member?) stopped me and said "Oh.... just so you know, it's going to be $900." I said, "Wait, you quoted me between $650-$700 just 2 days prior." Then he played that game where he was going to get an "ok" from the owner. He came back and said they would do it for the quoted price in a tone as if he was doing me a huge favor. In hindsight, this was just another disgusting attempt to squeeze even more money out of a customer. Might as well try to make an EXTRA $200 in a few seconds, right? I have to work 2 full days for that extra $200 that he wanted to take just like that. 2 DAYS of work for me- 2 seconds for them to take it. Talk about callous! This is the main reason for writing this review.... that he TRIED to squeeze that extra $200 for NO REASON at all. I was already overpaying. That night, I had a bad feeling that I was overcharged (total $825) so I did some research. On the invoice, they priced the part at $480...they add $275 for 2-3 hrs. of labor. As I researched this "Denso" starter online, I couldn't find it (from all the other websites) for more than $230 (Prices ranged between $130-$230 for starters used in my car). Even the most reputable businesses charged under $230. I called back the next day. 1st LIE: they said the starter they installed is not "remanufactured" and all the online ones are. He didn't know this, but I saw the box when I was picking up the car and the box clearly said that it was remanufactured. Plus, he said they give a 1 yr. warranty as if that's the reason they can charge more - because of this amazing warranty. Newsflash - it's not much of a warranty plus everyone else gives one as well. My last starter lasted 11 years so a measly 1 yr. warranty isn't exciting! The $825 price they ended up charging included a $25 battery bracket (which takes a few minutes to install. 1 month prior, a AAA guy offered to do it for $25 total). I asked for the bracket so this complaint is due to the LIES / overcharging of the starter. They 100% lied. 2nd LIE: When I continued to express my concern about the price "Dr." Vashkin said I wouldn't find another shop that would do the same job for less. So, of course, I called 3 random shops in our area. Their quotes ranged from $450-$700 (including tax). This "Dr. Auto Tech" originally wanted $900 plus tax as I was walking away from my car. Seriously?! UP to DOUBLE the price of others? Double! Why?! Perhaps it was my fault.. driving around in an 11 yr. old car just shows off all the extra money I have. They initially denied overcharging. It wasn't until I returned and asked him to find ANYTHING online that shows the same starter for even close to $480 - even from the most reputable companies. That's when he finally confessed the 100% markup and said he can because "it's my shop." When I confronted him on my research, he said "Why didn't you do this research before you came to us?" My response was "because I trusted you." Update: they returned $140 and said I no longer have a warranty. As if I would ever go back there. You couldn't pay me to go back. read more

I was coming home from out of town and found out my car had a dead battery. I called up AAA and they sent AM Towing out who said I needed a new battery and they replaced it no problem. However, the next day my dashboards lights were on for multiple items. I was leaving the Hermosa Animal Hospital across the street and pulled in for help. They were absolutely amazing. Not only did they immediately check all relevant caution lights, they topped off my fluid, checked all tires and added air where necessary! The owner then took the time to explain to me that a new battery should have never been put in since my car was less than 3 years old. In the end when I tried to pay they said not to worry about it but after pushing (because it was their time), they charged me the fairest price. I brought my car into Dr. Auto Tech because I wanted a second opinion after being told from a previous car shop that I had to spend close to $1500. Dr. Vasken checked my car out and told me that there was no need for the repairs that the other shop was claiming I needed. He is the most honest mechanic and he'll tell you exactly how it is. I've noticed that other shops will make up problems (like the first place I went to) in order to make a profit, but I've finally found a car shop that is honest and trustworthy. The entire process was smooth and I was kept in contact throughout the entire repair. The parts he uses are genuine and great quality, definitely got what I paid for. 9/26/2015 -- I am not a "Fake Yelper" I stand behind my post. Owner still fishy for calling me a fake poster! I would never go back to this place. I stopped in with my Range Rover HSE because the battery was not holding its charge. "Crooked McGee" AKA Vasken had a battery in stock and quoted me $340 to replace. I thought it was extremely high but it's been 15 years since I bought a battery and I was in a hurry. After I paid and drove away I looked at bill and the labor was $220 . Called back to ask their published labor rate and said it was $140. They charged me for 1 1/2 hours of work when took 25 mins. His excuse was I agreed to the $340. Shame on me for not asking more questions but why is it so hard to find ethical people??? I will to be loyal to people that I can trust. It's sad but I have gone to Jama, Dr Auto Tech, SB Ranger Rover and Firestone on PCH over the last 5 years and all them have miss diagnosed, overcharge or screwed up basic automotive issues. Why can't you get it right...... BTW -- The previous people that gave this guy a good rating must work for him or he paid them to write something nice. STAY AWAY! I originally thought that this place was thoroughly incompetent, but on further reflection, I think that they are crooks. One morning I found that all of my steering fluid had dumped out onto my driveway overnight. I took it to Dr. Auto Tech. His "solution" was replace some hoses and try to charge me $400.00+. When I went to pick it up, he told me that I'd have to remember to put in fluid every week or so. When I asked, "what do you mean?" he showed me underneath the car where there was already a huge puddle. When I complained that he had not fixed the problem I brought it in for, his answer was, "Well, when I diagnosed the problem, I only looked at it from above. I didn't see that there was a leak underneath." The leak underneath was a bad pump, which was obviously my original problem. The fluid container was bone dry by the time I got home, less than a mile away. After very heated argument from me, he took off the labor charge and only soaked me $100.00+ for the hoses (that weren't the problem). I then had to take it elsewhere and pay many hundreds more to have it fixed. The mechanic that finally fixed it explained that Dr. Auto Tech made a fortune on the hoses but wouldn't have made any money fixing the pump. As I told the story to other mechanics in the area, they told me that this guy is well-known as a crook. P.S. Online, they cleverly make themselves look like a dedicated shop for a variety of makes, but they aren't. I thought that I was going to a Mercedes repair shop. read more

Seems like an honest guy. Just don't think I got the proper amount of service for the price. I took a Mercedes to have inspected before purchasing it second-hand. Dr V took about 15 minutes to do his inspection of the underside, interior, exterior, and engine. He definitely seemed to be very experienced. He suspected the owner of the vehicle had only owned the vehicle for a few weeks even though the seller insisted the car had been in his posession for over 10 years. I later found out Dr V was right. Dr V also showed some MB-specifc knowledge that made me feel better I had come to a MB specialist. Additionally, he seemed to be more on my side as a buyer. My only gripe is that I paid over $100 for the 15 minute inspection. He didn't even plug in a computer or take the car for a drive. I later found a place that took about an hour to inspect another car I ended up buying and I was only charged $25. These other guys drove the car down the block with me and the seller in it and they also plugged in a diagnostic computer in addition to the things Dr V did. Before I took the car to Dr Autotech I asked his son how much the inspection would be and he said he was unsure but "not too much". So, I definitely asked before going. His actual repair work may be reasonable though. I don't know. read more

I have one word - Awesome! Dr. Vasken did a marvellous job with my Mercedes-Benz C-class this week. My windshield wipers were malfunctioning and needed repair ASAP, especially in this rainy weather! He informed me that it would require dismantling the entire steering wheel, and the replacement was a whole unit! Thinking it would take multiple days for it to be fixed, I was borrowing a family car, but in under 24 hours, it was ready. Let me repeat this, UNDER 24 HOURS! Crazy - it seems - but Dr. Vasken did it! Originally, Mercedes-Benz gave them the incorrect part, but Dr. Vasken had it fixed and got the correct part speedily. I am so glad to have found this place!! My 2008 Land Rover LR2 sat for about a month while I was on vacation and when I returned it was completely unresponsive. We put a new battery in which made the lights come on as it should when the key is inserted but still the car would not actually run. The dealership in South Bay said they couldn't look at it for almost a week, but when I called Dr Auto Tech they said they'd take a look as soon as I got it towed there. And that they did! Dr Vasken is a Land Rover guru- he knew exactly what to do and fixed the problem I wasn't sure could be fixed. I'd be lying if I said I understood half of the things he so kindly attempted to explain to me, but I certainly appreciated being informed on what was going on with my car! I genuinely wish I knew the technicalities of what was wrong with it, something with crash codes (even though it was never crashed) and battery issues, but I'm no car expert. Dr Vasken was able to communicate with the Land Rover factory to have the computer system reset to fix the issues. Not only that, but he cleaned my engine, replaced the lights above my license plate, fixed the broken fuse to the charger outlets, and fixed the air system in the car that was way too pressurized and blew mostly hot air. After all that, he made sure I had everything I needed for my 3 hour drive home, including cold water (which he gave me) and a car charger for my phone (which he also gave me). I have never appreciated a business more in my life! My college is in the area, so if I ever have issues with my car again, I will definitely go back to Dr Auto Tech!!! read more

I am so impressed by Doctor Auto Tech. I was having problems with my brakes so I did some research on the local auto repair shops. I called and Dr. Vasken said I can come in the same day and he can check it out for me. When I arrived everybody was so warm and welcoming. Dr Vasken immediately inspected my brakes and let me know that my brakes would still last another 20,000 miles. He did identify a rattling noise that I had overlooked and suggested I take it to Mercedes for possible warranty work. Dr. Vasken spent time with me going over the Mercedes brake system and why I may be hearing the grinding noise. He is so warm and genuine. I didn't need any work done so his time spent with me wasn't compensated. I really like to give my business to trustworthy, honest people so if I ever have any more problems I will definitely go back to Doctor Auto Tech to talk to Dr Vasken. Ripoff report. I am sad, upset but more so disappointed to say that there are zero if not only a small number of auto shops that do decent work at a fair price. This one, like many others rip you off and have no shame. In fact they laugh and smile all the way to the bank. I had a Small issue with a VW, and he charged me over $500 for 2 hrs of work, and the car only required one part to replace. His first estimation was $800, because he told me he had no choice but to replace my brand new air filter. Good 1! Anyways, try and stay away. Why can't we all just pay for what we ask at a fair price without worrying about being ripped off? Is that possible at all? Is our country/state now filled with thieves and criminals?? Sad. We are selling our Land Rover and brought the car in for inspection of a few items. Check engine light was on, rear suspension seemed low and what we thought was a nail in the tire. He very easily could have told us there were issues that needed attention, but instead he was honest and explained that the check engine light was a faulty sensor, nothing actually wrong, and that the rear suspension looks low after it has been sitting for a while and there was no nail in the tire, just a rock. Three years ago I arrived at Dr. Auto Tech completely exasperated. My 2006 Land Rover LR3 had become a money pit. Whether I took my car to the Land Rover dealership or to the Land Rover place near LAX, I felt like I was being taken advantage of - lots of mumbo jumbo I couldn't possibly understand and a shocking bill with the caveat that more repairs were needed in the future. When I met Vasken at Dr. Auto Tech three years ago, a diagnostic light had come on and I had one simple question - was I wasting my money to keep fixing this car. Three years later, my car runs beautifully, I rarely have any problems and when I do, I know that my car is in the hands of someone I can trust and who has integrity. Unlike other similar service centers, my call was fielded by a receptionist that didn't understand what I was talking about. She relayed my question to "Vaskan" and after an extended wait she returned to tell me that he suggested going to the local Audi dealership (exactly what I wanted to avoid). Having called multiple local shops trying to confirm my plan of action for pursuing what could be a significant repair on my Audi A4 (tcm replacement), Dr. Auto Tech does not compare. Others provided specific information on the type of repair I would most likely be looking at, including ball park costs. "Vaskan" didn't even bother to take my call.
