Before scheduling the appointment, I specifically asked whether they accepted my insurance. I was told, without hesitation, that they did. After waiting three weeks to see the specialist, I arrived for my appointment and checked in. When I handed over my insurance card, I was informed that they did not accept my insurance. Instead, I was told I could proceed as a self-pay patient at a cost that was approximately four times what I would have paid if they had accepted my insurance. When I returned to my referring doctor's office to request another referral, I was told they had been hearing about similar experiences from other patients. Based on my experience, this felt like a bait-and-switch. I relied on the information I was given when scheduling the appointment, only to learn after waiting weeks that my insurance was not accepted. At that point, I felt pressured to either pay significantly higher out-of-network costs or delay necessary medical care by starting the referral process over.
