Draeger's Market has a good selection of nice items, makes a good sandwich, and has nice cakes well priced (unlike other items there). I've had issues from time to time with the people working there. Most are nice and helpful- and everyone has on off day. However the woman working at the deli meat/cheese area is always terrible. Older lady with white hair. Almost every time I have dealt with her she is slow, doesn't know the products in the case and gets some combo of - protein, style of meat, or weight wrong. And she gets hostile when you complain. My wife and I ordered the last time we were there and I HEARD what my wife told her. When we came back she had give us turkey instead of chicken, then insisted we were wrong. Whatever. The manager we talked to fixed the order and comped us one of our selections to make nice. Today she was rude to my wife and got the order wrong more than once. We will never shop at Draeger's Market ever again. read more

Since Andronico's at Stanford closed (big sad face), Draeger's is my best shot for a kickass cheese selection, replete with at least two types of Beemster. Also like Andronico's they have the "slummin" food selection including Golden Grahams, which you'll never see in a Whole Foods. One bummer: they don't have any dried fruit without preservatives and sugar. Which is weird because even Trader Joe's has that, and it tastes better that way. Weird. read more

Not cheap, but great food. We've enjoyed getting special foods from Draeger's through Instacart. I love the choice of British marmalades they carry. Occasionally, they have real Wensleydale cheese with a cow on it, sometimes they have the cheese that says Wensleydale, but is from Melton Mowbray. So I wish they would have the authentic cheese from the Wensleydale Creamery. Their chocolate selection is excellent - many bars of dark chocolate suitable for chocolate tasting. I wish they would stock more Twiglets too - on a couple of occasions they have sold out. I love sitting in the upper cafe, drinking one of their teas with quiche or a scone. It is relaxing to watch the world go buy below you. read more

Menlo Park location: Short story - the deli staff today were belligerent and very rude when I arrived at 9:10 to pick up an order booked for 9am pick up. Clearly their delivery was running late, which is fine. But instead of calmly dealing with that, the woman behind the counter berated me, told me I didn't have an order on record and scolded me for bringing a printout of my order (double sided). 5 minutes later the cart arrived and my order was inside. But in the meantime the staff continued to be rude. Really Draegers? Totally unnecessary way to start the day. read more

I was looking for a quick lunch after an appointment in Menlo Park. Dreager's stood out so I looked in hoping to find a deli sandwich or a hot soup. The deli is enormous but there was nothing in the way of sandwiches that jumped out. I saw a sushi prep station and found their selection and pricing to be reasonable. I had to pay in the main check stands but the lines moved fast enough. All of the checkers and courtesy clerks wear ties. Parking is a combination of street and private lot and the lot was full with cars waiting for my spot as I backed out. On reflection the store is crowded and this was mid-morning on a Tuesday. If I was a local I could see myself exploring the inventory. Menlo Park residents are fortunate to have this market as part of their shopping options. read more

If you want bulk frozen Tyson chicken in a bag and pop tarts go somewhere else, but if your looking for fresh fish, local free range chicken, and organic produce Dragers wins. You'll find cookies with 5 recognizable ingredients and cereal thats not loaded with corn syrup. No, you won't find your Goober grape peanut butter and hubba bubba watermelon gum here, but spend a little more on one of Dragers olive oils, cheeses, balsamics or organic honeys, yummm...what a treat! Dragers and Fish Market beat Whole Foods (try to find sashimi quality tuna) and Cooks (Cooks needs to stop rubbing their dirty hands all over the fish - use a wax square) hands down. I agree with Meredith O., look for the RED TAGS, but yes, you pay a little more for products not made by machines. read more

Hats off to the chef who made the garden chowder soup tonight! So flavorful & creamy, with a great combination of vegetables. It's one of my new favorite meals and I'll be dreaming about the next time I can return for more. Great selection of anything to do with the eating experience. Specialty veges and fruits, a nice meat dept, a deli loaded with great take out items, a cheese section that would make a Frenchman proud, the upstairs has a great selection of kitchen ware, etc.. Customer service is really bad. I came to buy a cake. The guy at the bakery section was very unhelpful. He couldn't tell me what kinds of cakes, was unwilling to write happy birthday, and couldn't tell me ingredients in cake. I will never come to Draeger's again. read more

Stopped at the bakery at 7:30p on a Friday night. Purchased a carrot cupcake and a lemon cupcake. Both looked delicious; however, they were hard as bricks. I recently got my cupcakes and cake from Draegers. Tina and her staff at the bakery were so nice and helpful. I showed them a picture of the cake I wanted and they exceeded my expectations. Not only did the cake look good but was delicious. I got half vanilla and half chocolate cupcakes with butter cream frosting. Ohhh those cupcakes were so good. Everything was reasonably priced. I have loved Draeger's for many years! I've shopped at both the San Mateo and the Menlo Park locations. Here are my favorites - all made at Draegers: The smoked chicken breast in the meat section is really wonderful. The bear claw in the bakery department is soooooooo good you will think you have gone to heaven. The sourdough bread, both plain and topped with cheese, is the real deal. I also like their house blend coffee. Be sure to go during the Holidays and shop their upstairs for the BEST Christmas ornaments. Maybe I'll try a Yule Log this year. Enjoy read more

I just left Dragers I wanted a French ham sandwich and not many stores carry French ham. I ordered it on such crunch. I was expecting a premium sandwich. Not. The bread was old. When Dutch crunch is old the top has no crunch and this one also crumbled On my lap. Very little ham or cheese. Two pickles and hardly any onion. Extremely dissatisfied.. I'll go to piazzas if I want a good French ham sandwich. I can make two sandwiches with the amount of meat Piazzas puts in their sandwiches. read more

Stopped in after having lunch with a friend to buy a prepared meal for later. I bought a chicken pot pie. It was inedible - dry and tasteless. An expensive mistake! Also, I bought a carrot cake square and it too was dry and inedible. I'm very disappointed. I could have ordered a decent meal from a local restaurant for what I paid for those two items and had something much better. Needless to say I will not be returning. The upstairs is not super navigable by wheelchair. The top floor is divided by a couple of completely unnecessary steps in the middle of the floor. You *can* get around but not easily, as there is a hidden ramp in the back. read more

I and my family have been loyal customers of Draeger's for more than thirty-five years. Today I was overcharged by $25 -- first time this has ever happened, to my knowledge. When I went back to the store to make this mistake right, I was immediately treated with suspicion, as though I were a thief. When the floor manager returned after reviewing security footage of my transaction (!), I was finally refunded my money, with no apology, no courtesy. I'm truly surprised and disappointed by this experience. For all the Draeger's customers out there -- check your receipts. I fear for the elderly contingent who frequents that store for their regular shopping. read more

Super teeny parking lot leads us to a huge Draegers crammed w/ super-teeny aisles. Be prepared to bump your neighbors.....A LOT Seeking out my most beloved Peach Pie, we lucked into their last one. In usual fashion, this pie was loaded w/ tender, fresh peaches & a flaky crust w/ just a hint of almond baked right in. It's my all-time fav dessert!! We were also hoping to score a pot pie or 3 but all they had was chicken or turkey.... how about something for the veggies?? We like pot pie too! So decided to stroll around ( which is always a dangerous thing at this store ) & scored some lovely pasta & Dave's Gourmet Butternut Squash Sauce - unfortunately the sauce tasted predominantly of red pepper & while the sauce was tasty, I would never have qualified it as "pumpkin". The lovely wedge of crumbly, buttery, Parm we chose for the pasta was all kinds of tasty - loving their cheese selection! Also passed by these super-delish cinnamon-pecan scones but couldn't find any clotted cream! Boo!! The scones however were perfect w/ some homemade apple butter friends had made for us, over Xmas So for offering both found-hits & not-found-misses, have to say we're huge fans! read more

A few days prior to Thanksgiving I made an attempt to order a chocolate cake with the bakery over the phone. It was around 7:00am. The lady that answered the phone just responded coldly, you missed the cut off date. No attempt to use any customer service skills beyond you can come by on Wednesday to see what he have in the bakery. I'm ok with hearing "No" however I just wish if I'm going to drop some money as I've done in the past with this business, the workers would be more friendly on the phone. I work at the VA and have ordered lots of cakes for parties over the course of 20 years. This attitude and air of arrogance is a real turn off, and has continued to get worst. Very good products but not good enough to balance out the poor customer service. It's time to part ways. And BTW, in a review someone referred to a person who was homeless as a hobo. That is so offensive and hateful. read more

I only come to Draeger's about twice a year - it's too expensive for me as an every day grocery store - but it's dynamite for special occasions. Every time I come I am very impressed by the quality of service. Last time we came, we ordered a turkey in October for Canadian Thanksgiving (i.e., Columbus Day). Wouldn't you know it, no other place in this area has turkeys this early. But we called Norma in the deli and, lickety-split, she said she could have two turkeys done for us in October. They have set prices for everything, and they have a no-nonsense approach with their orders. They tell you exactly what they have and don't, and call you if anything changes. Probably the least stressful Thanksgiving dinner I've ever had. On the day of my special occasion, I just showed up and they helped to pack everything into my car. They even thought to wrap up everything for transport (so I wouldn't get my car dirty) and have someone help me move it to my car (so I wouldn't get too tired). In sum, though I don't go to Draeger's often, I can wholeheartedly recommend them for quality of service. If only they were less expensive...but I guess you get you what you pay for! read more

If you're reading a review before going to the supermarket, you're either ADD, Obsessive Compulsive, a Sick-Wondering-Yelper or a loser like me. Because I am writing the review. People, I don't get these 3 and 4 star reviews. Case in point: "Really expensive market in a really expensive town". Duh. Well then, drive your F150 out of town, sweetheart. If you come to Menlo Park for low prices, you need hospitalization. Whole Foods? Sorry. Yeah, I like the massive size of some of the Whole Foods, but it's _not a local business_; it's Another Chain Invading the Planet with zero local personality. The Draegers family live locally and do an awesome job. Draegers trumps Whole Foods' meat and fish. Draegers has an upstairs with cooking equipment. Draegers' staff are almost universally great. (There's that one woman in deli. You know who you are. Are you shagging the owner? What's the story?). And the Halogen lighting makes the food taste better. For those of you who seriously prefer the remodeled Safeway. I suspect you also wish McDonalds took over the Earth. Actually I am sympathetic if you find Draegers' prices high, but it an awesome store. I am also a Devoted Fan of Trader Joe's and one simple reason is Value, baby. Safeway, on the other hand, is the Death Star and should explode into lettuce bits and shrapnel, if I were Straf-Bombing Menlo Park (one of my fantasies). OK, you read a review of a supermarket. Their sandwiches are sub-par compared to Robert's. I used to come here often but then stopped because of the solicitors outside the door. If you walk in they scream out "ON YOUR WAY OUT!", and if you don't give on your way out they taunt you, and if you do give they say "I need big bills not this change." Draeger's is trying to be a high end market and yet they allow their patrons to be harassed at the front door? Very disrespectful. This is a great place to go if you need specialty items! If you need anything from high quality Valrohna chocolate to freshly sliced prosciutto, Draeger's is a good place to look. But being from the South Bay, Draeger's is far to drive for a few ingredients. What I go to Draeger's for is its cooking classes! Whether it be for a company offsite, an interesting date, something to do with friends, or just want to expand your own horizons -- Draeger's is a good place to go for some a la carte classes. The only reason I would ever come here is to buy one of the exotic specialty foods that aren't available anywhere else. It's fun to come and look at the caviar shelf and see tiny jars priced at over $100 each! In general, the prices are ridiculously expensive. And I mean RIDICULOUSLY expensive. They make Whole Foods look like WalMart. A lot of the products, as another reviewer said, are literally identical to what you can buy at Safeway for half the price. Trader Joe's is just down the street, is half the price and carries a far more interesting variety of foods. The atmosphere inside seems like something out of the 1950s. I keep expecting that guy out of the Shawshank Redemption to offer to help me bag my food. read more

Ridiculously expensive but considering the neighborhood, perhaps it's the norm? I really wanted to like this place. Anyway, I didn't appreciate the employee in the meat department who blatantly lied to my boyfriend and I when we inquired about the Frank Steak, the black colored tritip. We asked if it was similar to Schaub's Fred Steak and he said yes... Went home and threw it in the sous vide. IT WAS TASTELESS! Highly do not recommend the Frank Steak. I'll be asking for my refund of $35. Also, I took a look at the French macarons for sale in the bakery display cases and 95% of the shells were cracked and in pieces! Not presentable but still for sale. That makes no sense to me. read more

My son and I went to Draeger's in Menlo Park because we loved their sandwiches. There were only two people in front of us and they were both taken care of. We stood there for more than 15 minutes. None of the deli staff bothered to ask us if we needed assistance. They walked around as if we didn't exist. Best of the Best. I know one should not frequent the likes of a Draeger's for the weekly staples -- but I must admit, I do it! "Mom, Dad - I'm a Draeger's-holic! Can I borrow some money??" Walking into any Safeway just seems so depressing to me - the neon bright lights - the obnoxious kids flailing about down the aisles while I'm trying to read the fiber content of Special K Protein Plus... Just not my scene! Draeger's is my own personal little domestic heaven! I can leisurely walk down the aisles of gourmet pastas, soups, homemade ice cream (from some li'l lady in Woodside no less), delectable cheeses, fresh fruits & veggies, Frosty Paws and don't even get me started on the bakery ... you get the picture! And since I am such a regular here, the checkers (is that even a proper title? If not, I apologize for that which I don't know.) know me -- I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's these little things that matter... Especially when you're dropping $55 for: paper towels, 5 apples, Broccoli bunch, Spinach package, pasta and a few Crystal Light tubs... OK, maybe I exaggerated a bit with the $55 total ... Why is it that "higher end" grocery stores always seem to come with higher end attitudes from employees? You would think that a friendly hello or bit of help if you approach a worker and need it might help with the depression that comes when you are all rung up and the cashier hits the $$$ total on you... Thankfully I bought a produce sale item but the experience at the store was just not encouraging. Sorry but I came in here today for the first time and was just not impressed. First off, for some reason this market location is not listed with 411 when you call for the phone number. Strange. It's there though and has a high reputation for being a more ritzy market that most people this day and age can't afford. The only reason I came in here was for a produce sale I saw in their online ad. I came all the way down here to stock up on the sale and was SO disappointed when I saw the bruised, limp like flaccid like totally half dead, mangled mess of whatever zucchinis they had left. The only person who treated me kindly was the produce man who brought back whatever boxes they had left in the back per my eager request. I opened the boxes and the selection was just as bad as the ones left out in the produce area. MAJOR BUMMER. More disappointment than the first date that scars you for life. I have seen better produce on reduced produce mark down/clearance racks. People also there have the snob-shopper-staring-syndrome. I guess they are good enough to be there but you aren't so you will get the evil eye if you look anything remotely different from them or don't fit their expectations of what a human should look like. Sorry, I am my own kind. If you don't like then simply do not look. I got whatever edible looking zucchini I could out of desperation and left. I do not think I would have a reason or need to return to this store. I am giving it 2 stars because the floral section and big candy/sweet tooth "mini shop" is very pretty and very tempting and honestly the perfect fix to go treat yourself and numb yourself with after the store shopping experience depression hits. On your way out you can stop and tell yourself you deserve some nice flowers after all that and some luxurious candies then go home and do your thang and forget about it all in candy coma and friendly flowers. read more

For a person who can afford to lose ten pounds or so, I definitely chose the wrong meat (Salami) to be my specialty. Yes, I am reviewing a grocery store for their salami sandwich. I'll write a bit more about the actual store later. Draeger's really has just about every fine sandwich ingredient in the world. The deli(s) here pretty much specialize in The Shiznit, because that's exactly what my sandwich turned out to be. I asked for specific ingredients, and they had it all plus more, much much more. I have visited Draeger's for a quick bite several times over the past month. I am absolutely convinced that they have some of the BEST CHEWY DELICIOUS TENDER SOURDOUGH that money can buy. All of the staff/servers are super-friendly too. Now the grocery store. Full of food for rich people and experienced palates. My favorite thing about the store is that they have AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF LOCAL AND GOURMET HOT SAUCES right where the Pepsi coolers might be at any other store (BTW, Dear Pepsi: Shut up). read more

If you can get past some of the super snobby, self important people who shop here. You know the ones, they are talking way too loud on their cell phone, because yes they do want you hear them, they never say "Hello" to someone passing them much less an employee, they mow you and your baby down in the aisle cause they have to get past this very second, I mean right NOW! If you can get past those people, Draeger's is a great local place to shop, the Deli and beyond. Because surprisingly if you do ... the stuff you thought you would never buy at Draeger's cause it was too pricey, isn't. Draeger's started, or perhaps I just started noticing, RED TAGS all over the store. They tell you what products are cheaper then the Safeway Club Price. The Club price! And the Red Tags are everywhere. Ok, so not on the gourmet, high-end, or specialty stuff (no where else has that stuff anyway) but the regular everyday stuff. I already knew the milk and eggs were priced better then Safeway, but C & H Sugar, Baking Soda, Yeast ( I was in the baking Dept), yogurt. I was looking for a place to replace that monstrous Safeway with an increasingly horrendous appetite for my money, who would have thought it was Draeger's! When I first moved into the area, this was the first supermarket I stumbled upon. Unlucky for me, who just got out of college, this was quite a culture shock. People shopping in suits and nice dresses, driving super nice cars, and being generally super boughie! But as I started working for a living and expanding my culinary tastes, I came to appreciate the many good things here, like the awesome deli, and tremendous cheese selection. They also have a good cookware selection upstairs and cooking classes. Great place for the all around foodie. read more

Good bakery stuff. Good chocolate cake....frosting is good, but the star is the cake which is dense like a pound cake. The chocolate cake is better with the cream cheese frosting than the chocolate frosting. Carrot cake-- really good, moist, choke full of nuts and carrots. one of the better ones i've tasted. Banana loaf-- its ok, nothing special. Sour cream loaf- um, kind of bland, actually. Brazilian Cheese Bread--gotta try it, in the frozen aisle. They also sell half loaves of pound cake for use single gals. read more
