we just tried calling and they would't even pick up the phone, they are supposedly open until 10 pm, and I called at 930 pm,, I guess they were slow, its a monday night, and they decided to close early, I would just like consistency. They have good food, but the portions have gotten smaller, no soda, now they give water, and the egg rolls have shrunk to half the size they were, and now they are hollow.... and you have to pay $1.35 for the fried crunchy things, give me a break, I told them they overcharged me for an extra meal, and she was like... basically whatever.....,oh and they only give chopsticks now, IF you ask for them!!??!! they complain they are going to go out of business, but look to yourself and you will see why! read more

After heading to Yelp to find another local recommendation, Hubs and I decided to try Dragon Inn. THE FOOD I am not a fan of restaurants in strip malls, but don't let the location (or the dated decor) stop you from trying this joint. If you are craving freshly prepared, unique cuisine, this is it. Hubs and I ordered the same thing we got at the place that sucked so we could have a pretty direct comparison: General Tso's chicken Lo mein noodles Szechuan beef Steamed rice The General Tso's was tender, had a yummy sauce, and didn't have that reheated from frozen exterior that way too many places serve. My only complaint is that is wasn't spicy enough. It had a barely detectable spiciness despite having a few rehydrated peppers in it. It came with a beautiful salad on the side consisting of (I think) thinly sliced cabbage and carrot, and a beautiful flower-shaped daikon radish. The lo mein was soft but not squishy and was so comforting. The Szechuan beef was tender, tasted fresh, and came with the most amazing carrot "noodles". Hubby usually makes faces at vegetables but he loved this. Steamed rice. Properly prepared. Nothing special, but that's okay. THE SERVICE We didn't have a wait to be seated as there was only one other group dining at the time. That made me deeply suspicious that this would be a good experience, but I'm glad I was wrong. Our waitress refilled our water before it was half empty, was not chatty but was polite. THE AMBIANCE Dated. Like from the early 90's. The menu said the place had been open since 1986 or so, so I assume most of the furnishings haven't been replaced. BUT it was clean. Chinese music was playing which I like but it was funny because after a few minutes I started recognizing the songs because of their tune. They were English songs sung in Chinese like Jingle Bells and Camptown Races. There was a sad little fish tank. Hubby and I are huge aquarium enthusiasts so we, of course, are a little discerning where that's concerned but we felt this tank could use some live plants and rocks for it's few resident platy fish. It was clean, but the fish were too few and hiding spots were not available. Poor fish. The lighting was horrible. It was very dark and the lights would go from barely lit, to barely on, and back up to barely lit, over the course of the 45 minutes or so we were there. read more

All of the good reviews are for the prior owners. Check the dates on these reviews and you will see that since 8/19, all but 1 are bad. That's when the new owners took over and ruined the good reputation of the prior crew. Went on a Friday evening, was not busy, however, there were tables that needed clearing all over. The waitress was abrupt, not personable and did not check on the table throughout the visit. We ordered two appetizers, the steamed dumplings which were very mushy and not flavorful. I did not eat them. The other appetizer was an order of crab rangoons. They were not cooked well, cold in the center, however, there was no taste of crab in them. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan as my entree and that was very fresh tasting. When the waitress brought the check, I explained the problem with the dumplings. She did not seem apologetic or offer to bring a new order. She took the plate and left. My mother and I ate here and I would not recommend it. The hot and sour soup wasn't very good. Their crispy wontons to go in the soup were not very crispy and tasted of oil. Really kind of disappointed the last time I was here. As a Chinese restaurant that's been in business for years in the Fredericksburg area, I was hoping it to really deliver since they must be doing something right for staying in business for over 15 years. It has a nice and quaint atmosphere - a real down-to-earth low-key feel to the place. It feels like a family restaurant run by a family. No objections there. I ordered a plate that chicken in it, and for some reason the chicken was crunchy. Mind you, it wasn't the breading on it from being fried. The meat itself was crunchy and/or sinewy. Big disappointment. To be polite, I didn't complain to the waiter as that is how the dish is made... but being covered in sweet sauce that was overly sweet and the chicken itself was crunchy, it didn't make for even close to the best Chinese restaurant in the area. Stopped in for the Sunday buffet this afternoon before running some errands. Time was about 2:10. Buffet goes from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Price close to $10 with tax. I should have checked out the buffet before agreeing to be seated and getting my drink. The buffet was horrible! So picked over. What was there was indistinguishable. We called back and said we were not done ordering they didn't care they got even more upset and hung up again. They really could be a little kinder to their customers. I placed my normal lunch order today for my coworkers and myself to be delivered. We go here a few times a month for lunch and I have not had an issue until to day the woman answering the phone was very rude to me and told me she was not delivering the food unless I ordered more and she was too busy. I have been going to the Dragon Inn for fourteen years. Their food is always yummy! I got addicted to their Chicken with Garlic Sauce and their Hot & Sour Soup. My husband and mom love their food as well. The service has always been excellent! Fast and courteous! There is sometimes a little difficulty with language, depending on who is answering the phones for take-out orders, but it has not stopped me from going there and enjoying their wonderful food. I have only been here once and have only had one dish but I must compliment the staff! I arrived in Fredericksburg on a sales trip late in the evening and walked into the Dragon Inn just 20 minutes before closing. I ordered General Tso's chicken, which was delicious but what made me happy was how nice and welcoming the staff was and how the food was given the same attention as if I had been there at peak dinnertime. I have been eating Chinese food at the Dragon Inn for over 25 years. It is the best Chinese food in Fredericksburg. And I am pretty picky about Chinese food. Usually I do carryout, which is fast and you get a fresh, piping hot meal. The prices are reasonable, the food tasty and delicious. Consistently good. I particularly like the Schezuan chicken. The Sezchuan chicken has generous portions of white meat chicken stir fried with diced /shredded carrots that are still a tiny bit crunchy (fresh) in a delicious spicy brown sauce. The Hunan chicken is great too. In general, all of the dishes are generous portions, fresh meat and vegetables, and very tasty. Over the last 20 years my family has done business with this establishment. We have never had a bad experience with the food. About 95% of the time we order take out and have always received what we ordered. The food has always been delicious and ample. Some of my favorites are the Hot and Sour soup (I never was a fan of the soup until I tried it there), Singapore Rice Noodle, Double Cooked Pork, and the various Hunan dishes. I agree sometimes the two ladies working there can be unsocial or have a lack of good customer skills, but I look beyond that because all I want is the food. This was the second time we got food from Dragon Inn. The first time was a large order in July and most of the food was okay, but the egg foo young was not. It had a very strange unpleasant gravy. We tried again tonight and got 2 dinners to go. It was close to closing time which might have something to do with it, but the Szechuan Chicken was terrible. The food is okay, nothing special. Not anything you cannot get everywhere else. But the waitstaff is rude and unfriendly. There are two women that work there, not sure if they are owners or not, but they make it clear that you are bothering them if you ask for something. When I take time to read comments about the food and cleanliness of the restaurant I don't want to read about staff attitude as long as I get what I pay for. I've yet to find a Chinese or Asian Restaurant where its staff is polite like what Americans demand. This is a cultural thing and find it to be a part of the experience and charm so I'm not easily offended by staff who are assumed to be rude or lacks manners. I really only care about the food and cleanliness. I picked up Seafood Fried Rice (asked for Jumbo Shrimp and Scallops) and Large Egg Drop Soup for under $18. Plenty of leftovers and my big appetite husband was stuffed full. Since the food was for my husband I can only pass along what he said. His exact words "That was the best Chinese Food I've had in a really long time, thank you honey". When he's happy, I'm happy and that was worth the trip there. All I can say is, forget about the so called, rudeness. Accept it and appreciate all the charm this place has, don't take it seriously or personal. You just need to get use to the personalities and embrace the diversity of a culture. Thats what I love about places like this. I can't wait to try some for myself since I was in a pizza mood....so I really missed out!! Never again. Let me start by stating that I am not one to complain at a restaurant. Being a waitress myself I know what that is like! My husband and I were out for lunch and decided to go in and eat. The waitress was rude from the very beginning. It all went down hill from there! I ordered shrimp fried rice and wonton soup. My husband ordered general tso chicken with wonton soup. The wonton soup came and literally the noodles were HARD! Also mine had some piece of pink meat floating in it which may have resembled a piece of shrimp???Neither of us ate it. We did not complain just sat it to the side. Next, the shrimp fried rice came and the rice was HARD! Same thing with the general tso chicken....HARD. It just didn't look right either so my husband smelled it and it smelled horrible. I talked him into trying a piece and he literally gagged and spit it out. We told the waitress what happened and she went and got the manager (BIG MISTAKE). I explained VERY politely that the food just wasn't what we expected and didn't care for the taste as nice as I could say it. We explained that we had not eaten any of the food. He begins to tell me that the part of the wonton noodle I was holding was hard because it was sitting out of the soup. It must have been sitting out of the soup for a couple of days, seriously. Then he tells me he cannot reduce the price or anything because it is a cost to him and he repeats himself over and over that he cannot "recycle" the food which made me sick to my stomach because that's what was running through my head already. So we get up to leave and he begins to ring us up and I was still trying to make my point politely that the food was not touched and was not edible because it was so hard. He rang us up and asked did we want a box since we had to pay. I did not even take the food to my dogs who will eat anything! Then he begins to rip into me saying hes been in business for 24 years and that I should notice that I am the only one in the restaurant complaining. The whole time hes laughing at me and I snap. I ripped the bill up and laid it on the counter. Then he says to me that I he is the foreigner here but that I am the one polluting this country!!! WOW!!! So needless to say I did some research on the violations when I got home... the worst one I saw was one for "rodent droppings" which was a repeat offense on there numerous times!
