OK, so I was a little scared about trying this place after reading some of the reviews. But we were already here and we figured OK. What the heck we'll try it. We got the chicken chow mein, spicy crispy chicken, and pork and broccoli. Three dishes. All three were actually quite fresh and very good. The chow mein came with crispy noodles, which were also good and the rice was nice and sticky. so overall, it was a delicious meal and the pricing was just right. so I don't know whether or not it's just to go but whenever you get food "to go" food --that had bad reviews. sometimes it just doesn't taste as good as when you have food in the restaurant. especially anything that's fried that's supposed to be crispy. because when it stays in the container, it doesn't hold. Called in a pick up order, first time for this establishment. I must say, walking into the restaurant my first impression was the cleanliness. My food was ready upon arrival. This was one of the worst dinners I've ever experienced at a Chinese restaurant. I had this delivered. Eggrolls: I have no idea how they could call these eggrolls. When I took them out of the wax paper wrapper, my fingers got soaked with oil. They were not completely fried. When I bit into one of them, there was barely any filling. Most of it was cabbage and maybe some carrots. I did see a LOT of the rolled wrapper...there was more wrapper than ingredients. Among the worst eggrolls I've ever had. Hot and Crispy Beef: VERY oily...strange taste. This was strips of beef that appeared to be battered and in a brown sauce. This was NOT hot (spicy), which it what I thought Hunan cuisine was supposed to be. There was a LOT of oil in the sauce. I had been hoping this dish was like the "dry-fried beef" that I've eaten in Chinatown in NYC and San Francisco...thin strips of beef that are fried (most likely deep fried) with no batter, with thinly sliced celery and carrots. The 'dry-fried' beef doesn't have a sauce, but rather a glaze. I was disappointed in Hunan Garden's dish. It was not flavorful at all. Beef with Orange Flavor: I think I got gipped on the beef in this dish. There was maybe 8 or 9 slices of battered, deep-fried beef. I think I saw one little piece of orange peel. This dish seemed to have more oil than sauce. There were some pieces of broccoli that were sitting soaking up the oil. When I was cleaning up later there were clumps of ... well not sure ... perhaps cornstarch at the bottom of the container. Fried Rice: This was probably the best tasting of the experience. Lots of pork, bean sprouts, and other fried rice ingredients. But even this dish suffered from being way too dry. It's like it needed more sauce (NOT oil). It could have used some more soy sauce. I doubt I would give this restaurant another chance, unless they compensated the meal and tried to improve what I ate last night! So far I have not had an excellent Chinese meal in this area. My favorite Chinese restaurant is in Richmond in a hole-in-the-wall place called Full Kee. Other than that, I need to go to northern VA for a really good Chinese dinner. read more

The little Hunan on William street was always my favorite Chinese restaurant when I lived in Fredericksburg, and was the first place I looked for lunch when I came into town. While there is now a wine bar there, I was happy to discover that the owner had taken over the old Chinese buffet around the corner. The menu has changed some in almost 20 years, and there are some really good specials on there. The lunch servings come with rice and egg roll, and you can't beat that for a $10 meal. Service was always prompt and food didn't take long at all to come. Good portions and good prices. Additionally, I was really impressed with how well the owner renovated the place. She made it a calm and slightly more upscale atmosphere. The old buffet was good, and I do miss those upside down umbrella-looking things that hung from the ceiling, but it looks really nice in there. Overall, food and service is just as good as I remember from almost 16 years ago, and I will continue to visit when I come back. read more

We ordered from Hunan after looking for a spot that delivers to our office for lunch. We saw they had lunch specials and a few of us decided to place an order. I got the sesame chicken with fried rice and wonton soup. It also came with an egg roll. For $10 it was an excellent deal. The portions are huge, I couldn't finish my meal. The egg rolls are delicious. I would absolutely order again. They have a lot of items to choose from and delivery was pretty quick. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I have been coming here for YEARS on Christmas Eve. It has been a tradition. I don't know what happened to them. My family went in tonight and it was AWFUL. We had 4 adults and 2 children. We placed our order and 45 minutes later came out one plate of food. We completely understand it was supposed to be a busy night. 30 minutes after the first plate of food came out we asked our waitress how much longer for the remaining food. She came back and said it is all almost ready. We watched all three of the waitresses wonder around with plates of food asking table by table if it was their's. Our waitress then brought out two plates of sweet & sour chicken. We thought ok- here comes the food. Then we sat again. The waitress then came with two more plates of food and put them on the table. They were not ours. We flagged down another waitress to try and figure out what was going on. We explained that this was not our food and she began to argue with us and tell us it was our food. When we pointed out on the menu why it wasn't our food she then got snippy and picked up the food. We watched her walk back to the kitchen with the food she had put on our table which looked like dog food by the way. A couple minutes later another waitress appeared at the table next to ours with the food they tried putting on our table. By the way, I had put my fork in the dog food concoction to show the waitress why it was not my food. At this time we were angry and disgusted. Still missing half the food from our order we asked for the check and the manager. The check came with all the food that we had ordered but did not receive and we were told the manager was to busy to come speak to us. We then crossed off the food we did not receive and went to the counter to pay. The young woman at the counter proceeded to give an attitude since we requested an adjustment. She proceeded to tell me it was busy. There were three tables of people and we were there for nearly two hours and only received 3 of the six meals. I will never step foot back in this restaurant which is sad because like I said we have been coming for years. read more

So I did the Too good to Too thing tonight. First time ever, so I figure I would try it. I thought since the value was established @$15 and you only pay $4.99 surprise bag that it would be worth it. Boy was I wrong.....I got a pint size soup not sure what kind of soup, 2 egg rolls and a pint of white rice. Really at least it could have been fried rice and some wonton soup I would have been happy. To me it wasn't worth the time and drive to get the surprise bag and taste wasn't all that. Came here for an early lunch and found that I was the only person in the restaurant. Ordered a special that included an egg roll, soup, rice, and a main dish. For the main plate, I ordered Kung Pao chicken and specified extra spicy. I specified hot-and-sour soup to go along with it. The vegetables in the chicken (cubed broccoli stalks and carrots) were undercooked. What few chilis were in the not-so-spicy dish were ocher-colored husks that looked like they'd been found on the shelf where the jar of fresh chilis used to be. The taste of the hot-and-spicy soup was odd; it wasn't tangy or spicy. Maybe I was stupid for not ordering a Hunan-style plate at a place called "Hunan Garden." But if you put something on a menu, then you should do the dish justice. I guess that's hard to do when your menu is encyclopedic. I'm not going back. read more

Ok 3-4 years ago I would have given this place more then 5 stars. We ordered around $70-$80 worth of food was very excited to have yummy food. Got it home and all the food was awful. Most of it was inedible. The hot and sour soup was tasteless, the general tso tasted like wasabi. Broccoli chicken tasted like rotten broccoli. I called to let them know since this was the first time we have ever gotten bad food here. The lady I spoke with didn't seem concerned and offered me 15% off my next order. Unfortunately there will be no next time We had to toss most of the food away after spending that kind of money. Wasn't offered a discount on the amount already paid. I understand this can happen anywhere but atleast we should have been offered a discount on the money we already spent. read more

We were told there were not good Chinese restaurants in the area, but after passing on another restaurant we decided to take a chance on this place. The food was exceptional. Except for Chinatown, it was some of the best Chinese food we have ever had. The hot and sour soup was flavorful with a variety of ingredients and not artificially thickened. The egg roll was crispy and not greasy. The ribs were very good and some of the thickest we have ever had. But best of all was the beef and broccoli which had a sauce that was heavenly. LOL: The restaurant was the typical Chinese-American decor which sometimes leaves something to be desired, but the food more than made up for this. I looked at their menu online, specifically the combination luncheon. The prices seemed fair. I called and place an order for lunch carry out. She said to call when I arrive and they'll bring out the food. No problem. I get the bill and it was more than the price shown on the website. Then they ask if I needed change. Well, I'm not sure I brought enough with me. Luckily, I did. I didn't ask for change. I went back to the website and there's a note that says prices may change without notice. Ok. I just wanted to note that the prices on their website are incorrect or they can charge whatever they want. Food was okay. I've had better.
