    Deluxe Chow Mein
    Steve D.

"Dragon Village" is one of the oldest restaurants in Alameda's Webster Street Business District. I believe it used to be called "New China Hut." This place was open when the Navy base was active. I haven't ordered food from here in a really long time. It always gets mixed reviews. Their menu features popular Americanized Chinese food. But last night I had a craving for chow mein, and all my favorite Alameda places were closed. I flipped thru the DoorDash App, and it said Dragon Village was open late and had a $8.00-off promo. So I placed a pickup order for Deluxe Chow Mein and Fried Chicken Wings. Service, Grade (5/5): DoorDash hours are wrong. This place was actually closed when I placed my order. Dragon Village could of refused my order and said "we're closed." But they didn't do that, instead they made my food and it ready when I got there. Thank you. Fried Chicken Wings, Grade (3/5): 9-pieces, fresh and juicy wings. Small wings and tasted salty. Deluxe Chow Mein, Grade (2/5): Combination Chow Mein is like a House Chow Mein. It's fried egg noodles with a little bit of everything.....shrimp, beef, chicken, and veggies. The problem was it had a weird taste. Sort of a burnt after taste and a stale flavor. I'm not sure what it is. I threw it away after eating a 1/3 of it. I didn't get sick from it. Would I order again? No thanks Congrats on your many years of business in Alameda.

    Tomato Beef Chow Mein

I spend a bit of time at the Pacific Pinball Museum and like to have a bit of dinner after work before playing. Last week, I tried out Dragon Village. They have a small parking lot so that's convenient. I walked in and asked for a take-out menu. The woman there told me that they didn't have a take-out menu but I could look at the regular menu. I think that she thought I wanted a menu to take with me. Sometimes, things get confused in the translation. I ordered two of my standby dishes that I like to rate Chinese restaurants with. Tomato Beef Chow Mein and Potstickers. Paid my money and was told 15 minutes. It was a hot day so I stood inside by the front door and did some work on my phone. When my order came out, she brought it to me. I asked if there was a fork and she said everything was in the bag. Service was minimal. It would have been nice to have been offered a glass of ice water since it was so hot out. When I opened my bag to see what I received, I was happy and dismayed at the same time. Dismay, the goopiness of the Tomato Beef. Way too much sauce. There were tomatoes, beef and noodles. Now I realize that every chef and every restaurant has their own style of cooking a dish. I've even had Tomato Beef without any obvious Tomatoes. Needless to say, that dish was a failure. Here, I found myself missing Green Bell Peppers and Yellow Onions. Those two veg can change the texture and flavor of the dish. A bit of crunchy veg tempering the sweetness of the sauce. (sigh) And while I'm whining, I'll complain about the noodles too. As in too thick and not enough. Dismay, the thickness of the Pot Sticker wrapper. And that it was presented in a plastic clam shell without any vent holes cut into it. Part of the appeal of Pot Stickers for me is the crunchiness of bottom of the wrapper contrasted to the tender body of the rest of the wrapper. Even if cooked properly, the crunchiness will go away if the Pot Stickers are placed into a plastic clamshell, sometimes even if there are vents cut into it. The reason is that the heat of the Pot Sticker will create enough steam to soften itself. Too bad too because the filling was delicious. Happy, instead of just dropping in a packet of soy sauce, Dragon Village dropped in a split package. One side contained Hot Chili Oil and the other contained a mixture of Soy Sauce and Vinegar. I reallly wish more restaurants offered the same sauce.

I've driven by this spot a million times and finally ordered (looks like they do pickup only). Had a craving for Dim Sum type food in the afternoon, not ideal timing but Dragon Rouge Bistro had a collection of dumplings to satisfy my craving. Ordered: - potstickers: thick wrapper gave it a homemade feel. Yummy filling, not as crisp as I like but I will order again - egg rolls: just the way I like them. Crispy and golden with the soft filling. Generic seems rude, but it's exactly the way I love my egg rolls. - steamed bbq buns: I'd pass on this next time. They tasted and felt not as good as they should. -sui mai/shrimp dumplings: not sure which one I'm thinking of... looked like sui mai but had a lot of shrimp. The shrimp were bay shrimp, which I'm really not a fan of. The other one was good. I'd totally gamble again. One was really good and the other not so much because I don't like bay shrimp. - walnut shrimp: perfect! This is what I want when I order walnut shrimp. Some say too dressed, I say perfect! Great flavor and the walnuts were perfectly glazed. - fried calamari: strips, not rings. Really tender and huge portion! - salt and pepper fish: hidden gem. I'm coming back for this. I have been searching alameda for salt and pepper fish like this. I can defiantly see things on the menu that I'd order time and time again. Seems like people like it with the line I occasionally see. The staff are very professional and helpful.

Horrible! My brothers friend ordered party tray take out for his girlfriends birthday. He ordered Mongolian beef and seafood fried rice. So food arrived and all I could say was Jesus Christ great balls of fire. 80% of the Mongolian beef was just onions. And I'm telling you I love onions and tend to overuse it causing my friends to make a joke of me by saying if I wanted to make onion babies by using too much onions whenever I cooked. Now the Mongolian beef was literally Mongolian onion and has too much black pepper in it. Seafood fried rice were dry tasteful I don't know how to describe it. I think for the whole tray they've put only one egg. I won't go there even if they offered free food.

I've been here a few times and one time the owner or cook came up to our table to recommend some items and talk about the type of food he serves. They're very nice people and very generous, especially when I came by on a slow Wednesday for a solo dinner and I was pretty hungry so I ordered a few new dishes I haven't tried before. I ordered the spicy tingly beef noodle soup, the lamb in sauce dumplings, and the ruo jia mo stewed pork slider and I was also offered a bit of their liang pi cold noodle on the house which I commend on them for going beyond their service and hospitality. The noodle soup was presented so well and the dumplings sauce was so good that I poured some into my broth for extra flavor. The slider was so moist and fresh, juice was literally dripping off each bite and the cucumbers in it gave it a good crunchy texture. In the end I would come back anytime and order the same and perhaps try their malatang!

Especially for the price! Green onion pancake 5/5: Good crisp and nice chew. Can't beat that. Needs to come with a dipping sauce though so I asked for some sweet and sour sauce which she happily provided. Beef noodle soup 3/5: So I guess the noodles are hand pulled but it was very chewy or springy. The beef noodle was also a bit tough. I did like the clear broth it was served in and the cilantro in the soup adds a little extra that I enjoyed. Peking Style Pork chop 4/5: Had a good aroma. Wasn't all fatty. Could use a little more crisp to it but overall it was pretty good. Beef stew Noodle Soup 3/5: This was better than the beef noodle soup because the meat was more tender. The broth also had more depth and the chili pepper floating in the soup gave it that little extra kick. Again the noodles didn't seem that chewy unfortunately. Chicken wings with special sauce 5/5: This was the star dish of the place. Nice crispy wings that are juicy and hot with a sauce that rivals that "place" everyone goes to in SF. Sauce doesn't make the chicken soggy so it's all finger licking good! Overall for a little hole in the wall place this place is pretty good. I was dining alone and ordered only shrimp dumplings and a glass of Chardonnay, yet the wait was excessive. The wine arrived in what looked like a tasting-sized pour, and at $16 a glass, it felt particularly disappointing--especially since it was the only white wine option available. The restaurant itself felt neglected. The tables were wobbly, the décor was dated, there was a noticeable cigarette smell, and I even had to replace my own chopsticks after noticing lipstick on the pair initially provided. After waiting so long for my food, I stood up to ask for my check and cancel the order. At that point, the dumplings suddenly appeared, along with an offer of a fried bun as compensation. I declined and suggested they at least comp the wine given the experience, but they did not. The final bill was nearly $30 for a mediocre glass of wine and shrimp dumplings that were undercooked and unappetizing enough that I threw them away after a few bites. If you're looking for a quick meal before a movie, I'd strongly recommend going elsewhere. This was a disappointing waste of both time and money.

The sesame paste noodles are one of my favorite dishes here, there's a balance of sweet and salty offered in the creamy sesame paste sauce that's so addicting. The fried rice with shrimp is amazing - I love the crunch of the green onion, the softness of the fried egg, and the texture of the rice and veggies which weren't soggy and still held a nice bite. Last but not least, the hot spicy eggplant was a great choice because it's usually the trickier dish to cook as eggplant can turn really soft and mushy. I was delighted that with the way it was prepared, the large eggplant pieces still held a tender texture that did not fall apart. I also enjoyed the sauce that was paired with the eggplant, which is oyster-sauce based and added a pleasant sweetness as well. I'm always looking forward to my next visit and I love supporting Shan Dong!
