This was your classic, no-frills Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. And nothing wrong with that if you keep your expectations in check. Fortunately, Jamie W and I weren't in a haute cuisine kind of mood. We just wanted some comfort food before heading back home on BART. We could barely tell the place was open since there wasn't a customer in sight. Neither were the staff until I cleared my throat with forceful alacrity. We made our order and shared two items. The first was the $12.95 Yangzhou Fried Rice with shrimp and BBQ pork (Photo 7). It was a big enough portion to share, and even though the rice was heavily lubricated with sesame oil, it somehow satisfied our craving. The second was the $5.95 Shui Mai, four steamed ground pork and shrimp dumplings that tasted like they were left on the warmer too long (Photo 8). Listen, we were in the mood for fast carbs, and we certainly got 'em. Soup was very yummy--the broth could be thicker and spicier in my opinion but the noodles are really nice and the beef was excellent. Food came fast once order was taken. Ambiance is the downside here but just don't come here expecting a nice restaurant atmosphere and you're fine. It's a quick cheap noodle place what do you want! read more

I was craving CHINISE tonight and looked up dim sum on doordash. I'm from Central Valley but come to the bay to work. I'm still searching for my go to CHINISE Resteraunt. I ordered a whole smattery of food for dinner and meal preps for the work week. Fried rice combo Mongolian beef Sesame chicken Shu Mai x3 Har kow Lotus leaf rice Thai tea Egg custard bun Now, I don't know WHY this is a Bay Area thing. Every other bay area Resteraunt I've been to is the same. The dim sum is TINY. Like half the size of central and south California. The lotus leaf rice is 1/3rd smaller than normal. Yet the prices are higher than anywhere south of the bay. Insane. The shu mai, custard bun and Har kow tasted just okay. Like almost like frozen, and cooked from frozen tasting. Mongolian beef, the beef is a little too... wet? Like maybe that's their style. But I like the beef more pan fried. Everything else tasted good enough though. Nothing like stood out to me. I just got off work, and I decided to stop by at Spices Noodle House to grab some chow mein and won ton soup. Spicy BBQ Pork Chow Mein, $12.95 Won Ton Soup, $9.95 The dining room was pretty much bare. A chinese lady was busy prepping takeout and delivery orders. After giving me time to read the menu, she popped out to take my order. The $$ total came out to be just over $25. She tells me 10-mins, and goes back to the kitchen. Service gets (4/5). The Won Ton Soup was six plump dumplings, lots of veggies, in a light broth. Price: $9.95.....Grade (4/5) I liked the Spicy BBQ Pork Chow Mein. It wasn't super spicy. It had some chopped up dried red chili peppers. Thick ropey noodles with small pieces of bbq pork. Average sized portion for takeout. Price $12.95, Grade (4/5) These are the "in-person" menu prices. My family and I's first time at Spices Noodle House was great! We ordered the vegetable fried rice, vegetable chow main, garlic broccoli, vegetable egg rolls, and mongolian beef over rice. For everything it was about $73 tip not included! The food was delicious! Mongolian beef (I was told ) was spicier than usual. The chow main was good and had broccoli which I've never seen. The lady who took our order was very accommodating as we asked if the mixed vegetables could be spicy and gave us about 5 tea kettles of tea... (we love tea) There was one group there when we entered, but no one came in while we were eating... It was a Monday during lunch time and we didn't see any door dashers in or other customers. Food: The Tomato egg noodle was good, tasted just like a classic tomato egg, the salt pepper tofu was also really good, i love how they use silken when other places mostly use firm tofu, the hot and sour soup was very standard, not too sour or spicy :) and surprisingly the black sesame peanut mochi was so bomb it was the most delicious mochi i've ever had, idk if they make it fresh because it was warm! We haven't been here in ages since we moved away. But we came back on a weekend afternoon and enjoyed the food here like we used to. The crab rangoons, shiu mai, and the chow mein noodles were very fresh. The only thing lacking was the sesame chicken. It was not fresh or crispy. It was also odd because the staff doesn't speak English, we pointed to the menu where he highlighted our order in Chinese. But even after doing that he got our order wrong. Food is solid regardless though sometimes I think they split staff with the restaurant across the street so that could be weird. read more

I decided to check this place out on the whim through Uber Eats so that I could use my benefit and it really did not disappoint. All I need to say is that that salt and pepper fish is just so bomb! It is the most delicious thing I have tasted and just the flavor and everything is just perfect. I could eat that all day. We also got the combo noodles and the Kung pow chicken bao. I wasn't too impressed with the bow, but that's not to say that it wasn't good. It had great flavor, but just wasn't my jam. Shrimp fried rice was... Shrimp fried rice. Not to say that was bad, it was good, a little greasy, but still delicious. I like this place, I felt that the food came very quickly, the food for takeout was really good quality, and it wasn't cold or bad. I would definitely check it out again. My family and I went to the Bay back in November when the second wave of the pandemic was about to hit. With that in mind, rather than eat out, we ordered to-go and ate in the safety of our suite. Spices Noodle House was a gem during our visit. We ordered the following for dinner one night: -sesame chicken ($10.95): looks and acted a lot like orange chicken, but the pieces were a skinnier and coated in sesame seeds hence sesame chicken -dry braised green beans ($10.95) -salt and pepper fish ($9.95) -Mongolian beef ($10.95) -wontons in chili oil ($7.95) It all came with white rice, proper utensils, and everything you could possibly need for a to-go situation. And honestly, everything was so, so good. No complaints here. It was exactly what we were looking for and it how exactly we wanted everything to taste. Nothing was new or out the ordinary, but instead, the very best versions of what we've eaten in the past outside the comfort of our home. I tried this place because I was craving some spicy dumplings in chili oil. So I ordered that, some hot and sour soup and a Mongolian beef lunch plate, which comes with white rice. I wasn't impressed by the dumplings. I'm not sure what it was, I think whatever kind of wrapper they use for the wontons was not very good. But I did like them better when I dropped some in my hot and sour soup. The hot and sour soup was not hot at all. It was just sour. So the two items were made better by each other but that wasn't what I was after. The Mongolian beef was really tasty and the portion was very generous. I think it was a lunch special, but it easily fed two of us. I would return for the Mongolian beef and to try other lunch specials but I'll leave the soup and wontons alone. read more

I tasted more of a peanut flavor is this tan tan noodle which I like. It also had some cucumbers and cabbage so at least I got some greens in! The spicy brisket was my favorite! It had the schezwan flavor spices soup base and the brisket was tender and some pieces melted in my mouth! It also came with a good amount of bok choy. The fish fillets were okay. I ordered takeout from here and it was honestly the worse Chinese food I've had in Oakland. The tomato egg noodle is like diluted ketchup. The eggplant dish tastes like chemicals. The General Tso's tofu has a watery, flavorless sauce. I ate the broccoli out of it and am throwing the rest away. Spices Noodle House is a spinoff of Spices 1-3, Spices 3 being across the street. The Noodle House is similar flavors but slightly different menus. Followed my Yelp friend Daniel C.'s 5 star review of Spices Noodle House. The restaurant is actually the old location of Spices 3 that consequently moved across the street to what was once a hot pot restaurant. The interior is the same and the spices motif still on the front window. Construction on 12th Street makes access and parking difficult. We arrived around 2 pm and there was only one other table but they had a brisk take out business. I had a special request for half and half order of spicy brisket and half beef shank noodle soup and it did not disappoint. 5 stars spicy and numbing broth with QQ noodles $9.95. All of the noodle dishes are extra large and and feed two. We also had the Three topping dry noodles $8.95. 4 stars. We ordered two side dishes and it was funny we ordered them seperately but each time the server had to go outside and come back with ingredients each time, like she went to the market. Oakland Chinatown seems loaded with good Chinese noodle places, so I should not be surprised when a new one crops up. Spices Noodle House is located right across the street from Spices 3, an established Szechuan place. A few things surprised me about Spices Noodle. First, they serve traditional dim sum along with (Americanized) Chinese rice plates. The noodles go beyond spicy items too - they offer up different chow meins, dry noodles, and noodle soups, spicy and non-spicy. If you have 3-4 people in your group you can get four mix-and-match noodles for $29.95! The spicy beef brisket noodle soup is a thing of beauty! Lots of tender and juicy beef sliced inti thin disks, soft but slightly chewy rice noodles, and a pleasantly spicy, and mouth-numbing broth. They thew in a few pieces of crispy bok choy for good measure. Don't let the redness scare you - its spicy but not painfully so. I also ordered some of the glazed chicken wings to neutralize the aftertaste. $6.95 is a good deal for some crispy wings with piping hot, moist meat underneath. Definitely would come back to try their other offerings. Excellent food, generous portions, and very affordable. 5 stars. read more

This local Oakland Chinese restaurant has been delivering great food for years, and they can definitely bring the heat as noted in their name. On a recent visit, we enjoyed dishes spanning that range of spiciness that was always infused with flavor rather than just a focus on the heat level. Their spicy dry fried fish is a must for us as the white fish is perfectly cooked and the chile burn kicks in after a short delay. Combined with one of their spicy, ingredient-loaded hot pots, one may find one's mouth screaming, but their tasty dry-braised green beans and stir-fried greens are terrific complements to cool things down. We also liked tender noodles and chicken in their straightforward chow mein. Don't waste your time. Ordered Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, Szechuan hot pot with seafood (which is supposed to come with rice or noodles and a drink), and asked them to include utensils and condiments as well. I enjoy spicy, but when it's just spicy, to be spicy, and there's no flavor and all you can tasty is chili oil, it's just not enjoyable. My craving for some sort of curry noodle dish led me to spices noodle house since I saw they had a chicken curry noodle soup on the menu. However, after reading the yelp reviews and seeing other picture, I decided to get the beef brisket noodle soup. My bf got the hot and sour lamb soup, and we shared the salt and pepper eggplant. My beef noodle soup was delicious!! First of all, it's a HUGE bowl of noodles with a good amount of beef and bok choy. The noodle texture was great and the beef was tender. Soup was hot and a bit spicy, but not too spicy. I loved it. I also loved the salt and pepper eggplant. Perfect fried and seasoned. I tried a bit of the hot and sour lamb broth and it was also good--definitely a lot of lamb flavor. One thing to note is that they have this poster of a dish on the wall with the words "curry casserole hand pulled noodles" on it, and when I asked about it, the waitress had no idea what it was. I was confused, she was confused--why even advertise it?? The restaurant was empty on a Sunday afternoon, but they did have a lot of DoorDash orders, so service was a bit slow. The waitress never came to check on us except for when she handed us the check. Spices Noodle House is a solid choice for noodles. We called our order ahead and it was ready for pickup within 10 minutes. The menu isn't particularly big (and is much smaller than the menu at Spices 3), but there are a number of different noodle dishes to satisfy different cravings, and nearly everything on the menu is $9.95 (with the exception of appetizers, which range in price). Our first experience with Spices Noodle House was in the summer, on a particularly hot day. I wanted the cold sesame noodles, which we got with an order of the wontons in chili oil and tan tan noodles. Unfortunately when we picked up the food and brought it back to our place, the sesame noodles were hot, not cold like we ordered. I placed another order, ensured they'd be cold, and walked back to pick them up. They seemed short-staffed that day, as the hostess seemed to be working the check-in table at the door (pickup only due to COVID), the phone, and communicating with the kitchen, so I cut them some slack. Waited a few minutes and the noodles came out. The cold sesame noodles are my favorite item here. Unique dish, something different to shake up the typical noodle routine, delicious flavors, and like pretty much everything else here you get a generous amount. The tan tan noodles were great, but the won tons were just so-so. Not bad, just not super memorable. I'd rather the carbs be spent on the noodles. I had frequented Spices 3 a few times and one day saw you across the street, beckoning me to check you out. Then one day I did it. I looked you up, saw what you got and ordered some food. If I was to summarize my experience in 3 words, it would be... Value, Solid & Noodles. Why? Because I got the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup with Brisket, and then one with Shank. And the soup itself was pretty solid, you gave me enough noodles to feed an army (seriously we integrated your noodles into like two more meals) and because of it, it was fantastic value. I have two little toddlers who if you threw them in a pool of noodles, they would easily eat their way out. So to get a good amount of noodles not just for this meal but to distribute for future meals? That's a big thumbs up from me. Your food isn't mind-blowing (very few are), but simply Solid. And then the value/price take sit over the top. I don't know about some of the your other dishes, they seem pretty standard to me, but not going to rate you one those because well, I haven't eaten then. So here to the noodle bowls. Great value, quality and service! I was in a rush and didn't get to order ahead of time like I normally do. Using the Yelp app in my phone, the ordering online at Spices Noodle House was so quick and easy. I ordered chow mein and paid with Apple Pay in about 15 seconds. I received a confirmation email immediately and was instructed to pick up in about 30 minutes. I arrived there in 20 minutes and my order was already waiting for me! Picked it up and walked back to work, and it was piping hot still and completely packed to the top of the container of yummy noodles! I knew it was a lot in there too - the box was so heavy! :-) Eating the noodles as so good. Not salty or saucy - just the right amount of flavor and not too oily either. Of course, because it was so full, I couldn't finish it and saved some for an afternoon snack in the office. All this for about $11. This is my new go to take out Chinese in Chinatown. They make noodles that are toothsome and hold up nicely in flavorful sauces and soups. I don't arrive home with pasty, mushy noodles. I've enjoyed the Tan Tan cold noodle more than a few times and they are consistently wonderful. The beef chow fun is a large portion and not greasy, but you should love sweet onions when trying this dish. They have Sesame Balls with red bean paste which make for a nice dessert. I understand they have Black sesame mochi balls and I'll try those next trip. Yum! read more
