This place is great and convenient, especially for walk-in service. I've found that, and I don't know if it's just me, but the receptionist/desk person is always super rude. I've been going to this location for a few years too and consistently, they all just have attitude. Whether on the phone or in person. Not only is her professionalism outstanding but her kind and caring nature made for a lovely few hours at the salon. So glad I decided to come to Dramatics! I've been to several expensive salons before and ended up with a completely average haircut. Dramatics is not nearly as expensive as all those places, and I walked out with a haircut I loved. My stylist was Serge and I'll never let anyone else touch my hair again. While everyone at the salon was really pleasant, from the receptionist to the person who washed my hair, I walked in without an appointment and was lucky enough to be taken immediately by Serge. Moving to the city from upstate a year ago, I was desperate to find a good salon that didn't charge me an arm and a leg for my long, thick hair. I'm also nervous about my haircuts after a number of bad experiences. After doing some Yelp research, and literally walking right across the street from my apartment (huge plus, so close!), I walked into Dramatics on 3rd Ave. I was given to Vogue (Lydia) and I couldn't be happier! She is a great stylist who knows what she's doing and is very accommodating. I've enjoyed every haircut and blowout. Also doesn't hurt that she's friendly and fun to talk to! The entire salon has an awesome vibe; music is always playing and everyone is happy. The girls in the back who wash hair are super nice & Serge, another stylist, is hilarious. I will definitely be coming here for as long as I live in the area. My cuts run me about $55 before tip. Credit cards are accepted but you cannot leave tips on cards! Tips must be in cash, which I was super embarrassed about my first time there when I had to run across the street to hit up an ATM haha read more

Her attention to detail is impeccable. Reds are hard, but Katt always finds the perfect shade for my skin tone. She also makes thoughtful suggestions about highlights, which take my desired style to the next level. Whether I ask for simple layers or I want to go short, Katt's precise cuts always look amazing. Last week I called Dramatics, explaining to the receptionist that I had attempted to get blonde ombre done somewhere else and was unhappy with the results. She immediately booked me with Mimi, and I am SO HAPPY that she did. Mimi listened to my explanation of why I didn't like the coloring I had, and worked hard for the next two hours to give me exactly what I wanted. The color is perfect (I went with a lighter brown ombre), and the cut was fantastic as well. I couldn't be happier with the way my hair looks. Worth every penny ($145 for cut/color), and I'll definitely be back the next time I need anything done with my hair. What an awful place! The front desk people are very annoying. They tell you one thing and do another. I went in for a bang trim, I saw Mia... She butchered my bangs. I showed her a picture of what kind of a bang trim I was going for, so that there would be no misunderstanding. She completely messed up my bangs by trimming them way too short... It's way above my eyebrow line. And then she tried to make them look longer by using the flat iron for long time. Moreover, she was trying to convince me to trim my hair too...adding that she would not even touch the length, that she would just trim it, yeah right! I noticed that another walk-in came by and she gave her my spot. I waited for her to find another spot for 15 more minutes. I become very particular when cutting my hair whether it is .5 inches or 18.5 inches long, straight or sporting my natural Dominican kink. It can be very difficult to cut curly hair that defies all rules especially when I think I know better what suits me or how to cut my own hair. However, I must share with everyone who can relate to me that Gucci (Melissa) of Dramatics does the job and I've learned to never have any fear when she is holding the scissor. Never, ever before Gucci, has that happened. She seems as though your direction went right over her head but, lo and behold, she repeats exactly what you said and does the deed. She'll also clean up someone else's hair vomit if you cheat on her without the guilt. I've followed Gucci over 3 Salons and 9 years. Any hair texture, length--Gucci pleases. I have been going to this place for years and years now. I want to love this place but something holds me back from saying so. I bounce around to see if I can do better and I come here when I absolutely need it which is averaging about once a year. I don't get anything crazy done. I am a boring girl when it comes to my hair: wash, trim ends straight across (no layers, no bangs, no dye jobs, no nothing), blow dry with flat iron and basically get it as straight as possible. At first I used to see Yuki and when she left I followed her around until she disappeared. Then I came back here and started seeing Cleo and then she left for greener ($$$) pastures. After exploring around a bit, I felt like I had to come back here. When I made my appointment, I asked for someone who had experience with straightening ethnic and processed hair and the receptionist set me up with Mia. She told me, and I quote "Don't worry, she's Dominican". OMG. Here is the issue that ruins my experience, I always feel as if they are trying to sell me products all the time. I can almost recite the script word for word: "Hey how much are you paying for your deep conditioning treatment today?" (I never remember). "Because if you buy this conditioner (which is a $50 shea conditioner) you will get more for your money. I think you really need it because your hair is really dry." I felt that Mia was too pushy with the sales. I can't ever bring myself to buy $50 conditioner that will literally go down the drain. Mia was very sick one time and I didn't feel like rescheduling again so that is how I was introduced to Mimi. Mimi does exactly what I asks. I LOVE Mimi. She chats and lets me relax at the same time. She always has a great attitude and never makes me feel uncomfortable. (The shampoo person reads the sales script now). I think the difference is that one recommends products and the other one pushes. Get my drift? Another major gripe: Why doesn't Dramatics have free Wifi? WTF? Starbucks, McDonalds, Wendy's, Dunkin Donuts, Panera, doctor offices all have free Wifi except for the one place that I am going to spend roughly 2-3 hours in? They have free coffee and tea but no free Wifi in the one place that should have it? Come on now! Get with the program. Now let me list the reasons why I travel all the way from the Bronx to here to get my hair done: Never, not once, were they ever late for my appointment. They are always ready for me at my appointment time-this shows me that they value my time; I highly recommend the clear gloss treatment-it makes your hair so shiny for weeks; professional and clean looking salon; professionals all around who aim to please; scalp massages; free coffee and tea and even though I don't utilize the service but from what I can see they do great highlights/color. Bottom Line: Of course I will come back but I will be stepping out on the side too. read more

Wow. Horrible Salon. I booked a 4:00pm appointment for a single process color and a trim and didn't leave until 7:00pm. Three hours. It took them 30 minutes past my appt time to actually sit me in the chair, she dyed my hair but didn't come back until 15 minutes AFTER the timer went off for her to wash out the dye (anyone who colors knows that every minute counts... now my hair is almost black instead of the rich chocolate brown I asked for), and she didn't even style my hair! I was told that since she was running behind and because the guys behind the front desk wanted to leave, she would cut my hair but I'd have to come back tomorrow if I wanted it styled. No thanks. She cut my hair in under 10 minutes (which I was weary about).I left the salon angry and with a wet mop. When I blow-dried it at home, I found out my bangs were at uneven lengths (I found my very front bang was at LEAST an inch longer than the ones off to the middle). I've never been so angry to wait that long for a haircut that was botched, a dye job that is too dark, and they didn't even blow dry my hair. I was never offered water, a magazine, or any kind of hospitality. I am going back today to make sure they fix this mess. Cheap cuts? Sure. Worth it? Only if you want to look like your college roommate cut your hair wasted. Even then, the drunk roomie would probably do a better job. read more

Absolutely loved my experience here. I cut off 13 inches of my hair, and was going for a new look (a cute shoulder length cute). Serg cut my hair, and was extremely helpful in giving me his honest opinion about the new haircut. After chatting for a bit, I decided "to just do it." He spent close to two hours perfecting my hair cut. After the cut, he styled my hair various way to show me my options when it came to styling it. I went to Serge for a cut and color, specifically the ombre look and he did an awesome job! I was extremely nervous since I do not like to play with color, but he assured me everything would be okay. I explained that I did not want it to be dramatic, but more of a subtle look. I absolutely love the results! He also is aware of the fact that i color my own roots regularly due to time constraints and not being able to make it to the salon every month, yet he does not take this personal and he was willing to explain to me why my color is not lasting. This place is ok. Not great, but just ok. As a dude who wants to look good, I would definitely go here over Supercuts, but this isn't my first choice. Of the two times I've been here, I've had two different experiences. The first time, I had to wait a while to get my hair cut (like a serious cut), and it came out looking great and I only paid $20. The second time, I made an appointment in advance to avoid the wait. All I needed was a trim and some blending, and because I made the appointment, I was charged nearly double ($36 before tip). Aside from the names, high energy dance music, and kitsch, it's a decent place to get your hair done, but you're better off risking it waiting than making an appointment and giving them an excuse to upcharge you. Still better than Supercuts though... read more

3 words: Ask For Scarlett! Talent is, of course, the most important factor, so let me start with that. Scarlett is creative, and skilled. I came in about 4 months ago and told her that I was bored with my hair. Rightfully so, she told me I needed to grow it out before she could "play," and in the meantime, she kept me looking good and taught me how to style it while it grew out. Today, she made the big change, and I love it. New look, all because Scarlett had the vision and creativity to make it. Besides skilled, Scarlett is also a complete and total sweetheart, and funny, and just edgy enough to be fun and interesting too! She listened to me (and my daughter when I took her) patiently while we explained what we wanted, and i appreciate that a lot! Truth is, the whole place is full of sweet fun energy. read more

Sigh. I've been to almost all of the Dramatics locations at some point, been to various stylists at each location. I'll realize that I'm not happy with the service, go somewhere else - and eventually wind up back at Dramatics a couple years later. The *only* reasons I go back is because their prices are fairly cheap for NYC. I don't typically believe in 'you get what you pay for' when it comes to finding a good hair stylist and kept hoping to find a gem at Dramatics, but I give up! I've had a number of cut and color disasters at various Dramatics salons. I really want to believe that there are probably one or two excellent stylists at each location. Maybe? I mean, sometimes I see people leave the salons with really fabulous hair and wonder if maybe I've just had terrible luck. My hair is extremely thick, fine, dark, and wavy/prone to frizz. I'd have to say that most of the stylists don't know how to work with that hair type. Many of them are 'razor happy' and that makes my hair cry tears of split ends. They also love to use thinning shears instead of taking the time to layer hair properly. I would go so far as to say, if you do find an excellent stylist at a Dramatics salon, they probably won't stick around there too long so be sure to trade contact info if you'd like to follow them. My last two appointments at this particular location were with a stylist that I hate to say anything bad about because she's extremely sweet and did a color job on my hair the first time I saw her that I was very happy with at the time. It was a bright, coppery red. She renewed my interest in Dramatics and made me think that maybe they weren't as bad as I remembered. The second time I went to her, about 2 months later for a color touch up, disaster struck! I can't even totally blame the stylist. Apparently the shampoo woman was instructed to pull the color that had been placed on my roots through the length of my hair to refresh the color and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing. Except that she washed the color out instantly. I was left with neon orange roots and the rest of the hair was obviously still the same faded, washed out red that I walked in with. It was the sort of color disaster that I'd read about other people having and assumed they had to be exaggerating - but, nope, this crazy stuff really does happen. My stylist was upset, admitted that she shampoo woman made the same mistake with another client the previous week, and offered to put a color glaze on top of the mistake in an attempt to blend the colors. I told her that I just wanted the color to be exactly how she'd done it the first time. I guess that wasn't an option anymore at this point? I don't know. Anyway, she used a dark ruby red glaze that left me looking like a cartoon character. It was a color that my former 14 year old Manic Panic loving self would have squeed to death over. The presently 28 year old me? Not so much. Plus, it was still noticeable that my roots were much more vibrant than the rest of the hair. In hindsight, even the original dye job on my first visit wasn't so great because the color wasn't totally even then, either (brighter on top, couple shades darker toward the bottom) and I had dye staining my scalp and ears for a week. I also had a ton of scalp flaking and (gross) scabbing for a few weeks afterward. I don't normally color my hair, so in my own ignorance, I chalked all of that up to my hair being 'difficult' and skin being 'sensitive'. She said the stains were unavoidable, especially with red dye, but I've since been to another salon (Pepper Pastor Salon) that miraculously managed to dye my hair the perfect, even shade of red without a trace of staining on my skin. Go figure. I'm very happy to say that I've found a new salon where - yes, I pay more - but the service and quality far exceed anything I've experienced at Dramatics. I wish I could recommend them for something... but I've even had bad experiences going in for a basic trim. They sell a finishing cream that I like a lot. That's about the most positive thing I can say at this point for Dramatics. There are way too many better salons in the city to check out rather than waste $$ here, as tempting as their prices may be. And, yes, the fake names are too silly... especially since once a stylist leaves, their fake name gets 'recycled', so... be careful making appointments based on recommendations for specific stylists, because if you're expecting to see the Glitterpants (or whoever) that had great reviews 2 or 3 years ago, the Glitterpants you make an appointment with today might not be the same person. read more

I made a same day appointment and got Mimi. She had the daunting task of lightening my hair from very very black to a lighter color. She took the time to explain to me my different coloring options (full color, corrective color, half highlights, full highlights) and even showed me using sample colors what I could expect from the process. It was a long process to get it even a little bit lighter and she was patient and fun through the whole thing. After she was finished she gave me a great trim too and I couldn't be happier.
