I saw Preston today to do my hair for an upcoming wedding in Puerto Rico. He chopped a bunch off and gave me the color of my dreams! I feel like I've been trying to get this color my whole life but have never been able to describe it. Preston is a magician, a mind reader and I enjoyed every moment with him today. My hair feels so healthy and he offered me some product to keep it looking the same at home. He also brought me tea while my hair was processing as I have this super annoying cough. *** Jai is great!!!! *** I read a ton of great reviews about Jai on Edo Salon's page. Luckily when I called there the girl who answered was sweet enough to tell me he moved here. I booked an appointment with him because I read he is great with curly hair and is a perfectionist. It is true!!! I had a horrific thing happen where I started losing a bunch of hair. Jai was so sweet and took a seat to listen to my story. And then he checked out my hair and asked what I did 6 months ago because he saw that a bunch of hair was growing back. I had noticed that on the sides and he said it was growing back all around. What happened is that I continued to use All Soft shampoo by Redken even though I felt it was burning my head. I didn't know it was actually frying my head, causing my hair to fall out. A couple months ago I couldn't take the pain any longer and switched shampoos. Apparently, it's been the cause of my hair loss. Jai figured out a way to cut my hair super cute, blending the chunks that are growing back - yay! Before he cut it, he showed me a few photos on Pinterest. I like all the styles he was picking out and told him to work his magic. He shampooed my hair with a product I brought in, giving me no problems whatsoever for it. His head massages are seriously the best!!!! Ahna Ahna Ahna = THE BEST!! I don't know why I never reviewed her before!?! I've been her client for maybe close to a decade. I am considering coming back to her every few months after I move away from the Bay Area. I can't quit her-she's that great! She is so skilled at both cut and color for women AND men! (My husband went to her first and recommended her to me. That's how it all got started.) Not bragging: Every week or two I get at least one compliment on my hair from a stranger. I don't take credit for it; I give all the credit to Ahna. (Not even exaggerating! I've told her I'm going to start texting her every time I get a compliment.) Prior to discovering Dreamers and Make Believers and the lovely and talented Alise, I hadn't called a salon back for a second date since my mother, sister, and I maintained a regiment of matching lady bowl cuts in the early 90s. I have curls. Most salons want to lob them off and blow them out; curl-centric salons and their Deva cut leave me looking like Jessie Spano. Now I have Alise and a haircut I love (yeah, that's me flirting with my own reflection on MUNI). And when I did return for my second cut and admitted that it was pushing 9 months, and that I had taken scissors to my own head in a fit of faded highlight fueled rage, Alise passed not one eyebrow raise of judgment. In my 30 years, I've only let 2 people touch my hair, and Lareina is one of them (the best one!). I've been seeing her for the last 7 years, and I wouldn't let anyone else put their hands on my head. Every time I leave the salon, I leave with my hair looking like highlighted blonde perfection. I may like it blonde, but she is a seasoned pro, and can not only do whatever you're asking for - I've seen other people's final product while waiting for my turn. And although I just usually get my hair highlighted, she's also the only person I've ever let cut my hair (into layers). Despite my reservations, I was more than happy with the result. And, if you think I'm picky about my hair, then you should see how picky I am about my boyfriend's hair! I have been the only person to cut his hair for years, but finally enough was enough and it was time for him to see a pro. I sent him to Lareina and described how I like his hair cut, and it came back PERFECT. He clearly has a new barber. But equally important is her personality; Lareina is just so...chill. I this salon. From the vintage vanities to the indie magazines to read while you're waiting, it's got a great vibe. After seeing the same hairdresser for 3 years in Menlo Park, I decided it was finally time to get a stylist in SF closer to home. I scoured yelp reviews for salons in the Mission, and eventually made an appointment here with Lauren Kolb. I came in with an angled bob that had been growing out for 2 months, so I was looking pretty shaggy. I was ready for a little change but nothing too radical. We chatted a bit before she got started and I really didn't know if I had expressed myself well. But 45 minutes later my hair looked fabulous - a sexy, piece-y bob with more styling options than the style I had before. I couldn't be happier! In fact, I immediately booked an appointment for my husband to get a haircut here (with Alyce, who was also great). As another Yelper mentioned, Lauren now splits her time between SF and Portland so she's only available about 10 days per month. Those 10 days seem to book up pretty fast, so it's worth planning ahead a bit. read more

I went in for a haircut with Wendy after hearing about her on Refinery29, going into my appointment with no ideas, all I knew was that I wanted to keep the length (currently growing it out). My hair before was below my shoulders, piece-y along the bangs with layers through out - sort of bridget bardot like. Wendy really took time to look at what would suit me and ran some ideas by me, what I left with was a very modern Betty Page cut, as she called it. my story begins with Megan at Glamarama, perhaps 3 years ago...i became addicted to her patient, natural way of communicating and conversing with me during our appointments. she was talented and witty and caring. Many appointments later.....Megan left the bay area for a bit, and i was LOST without her. when she returned to us, it was at Gingerrubio salon. this was very cool. whew. Megan again, thank the goddess. then came the big mistake i made...i let my former boss comp me a bleach and tone at HIS favorite salon, Oxenrose. i won't comment too much on the careless cavalier way one of the head stylists there just simply shunted me off to be double-processed entirely by his assistant on that day. i wound up with so much breakage in the crown and interior of my hair that i couldn't even wrap it around the thinnest caruso steam foam roller. i was devastated. depressed. astonished. how could this happen at 'the best salon or whatever in sf?' nuff said there. return to Megan and Pony, the dog. Immediately after having my wavy/curly hair cut, it is curlier than ever on first wash. (This is rare when you have curly hair.) Ali S. Kills it with mens's cuts. Period. Short version: * awesome salon * Ali S. is an amazing stylist * sweet location * radical cat art! Long version: I'm very picky about my hair and Ali is the only person I will let cut it these days. (Fueled by the many compliments I get after a fresh trim!) While she is the most technically skilled stylist I've been to, she also provides a great service. Very polite, makes you feel welcomed, fun to talk to, and goes the extra step with a little scalp massage while washing your hair. Also, I'm really digging this salon. The back area is very comfortable and spacious while you're waiting, it's in a great spot in the mission (close to four barrel!), and they have some rad cat art on display. Megan was receptive, down to earth, and professional. The Salon is cozy, but most importantly she listened while I voiced my concerns, desires and needs for my hair-do. I haven't been to a salon in years (I've been going to my dad's arabic barber) so my hair needed a huge make over. Initially I had the hopes and dreams of going from a dark brown natural shade to a dramatic ombre or some kim k. blonde 'do. After consulting with Megan, I decided to go with a more natural, healthy, beautiful look for myself. She assured me that I could still have a new look by incorporating more subtle changes without damaging my hair (in fact making it healthier). She proposed that I add some highlights around my face and then cover my whole head with a darker hue. Over time, the darker hue will fade and reveal the hidden highlights so I will incrementally achieve the change in my look. I was a little apprehensive at first because I wanted a dramatic difference but my instincts trusted her suggestion (It was a suggestion bc she would have done the dramatic 'do for me if I wanted for sure). I sipped on some champagne and read some gossip mags and had a very relaxing enjoyable experience and walked out with natural, beautiful, healthy cut/color. The compliments haven't stopped. I might not have the drama I'm looking for but I look gorgeous and naturally effortessly beautiful! The salon is pricey (compared to my 20$ barber haircuts) but its worth it for a lasting look that you feel confident with. read more

I am a fan. I've been pseudo loyal to the gal who cuts my hair downtown. I always walk away with a decent cut but it wasn't ever anything exciting or different but I've always been too lazy and indifferent to search out a new stylist. Looooooove Sara Moore! She is an absolutely amazing hair stylist! I've had dyed black hair for most of my life, and recently decided to go blonde. I know this wasn't going to be an easy feat. Sara was not only up to the challenge, but also as excited as I was about the project!!! We've taken our time and lightened my hair over the course of the last few months. I have been going to Kristen for a few years and I love her. She works absolute magic with my hair, which is sometimes tough because it's so fine. She always listens to what I want and is game to do something different but manages to make it work with my hair. What I really appreciate is that, at this point, I don't have to spend too much time trying to tell her what I want or worrying at all about what she is doing, because I TRUST her. I always love the way Kristen cuts my hair, (I need lots of layers in just the right places) but she is really amazing with color. The last time I saw her, she spent SO MUCH time with my belayage and I ended up with exactly what I wanted--a rich, honey color at the ends, a little lighter for summer (my natural color is boring brown). My sister took a photo to her stylist because she wants her hair to look as good as mine does! Aside from having mad skills, Kristen is an absolute sweetheart. I look forward to seeing her and catching up. I just moved out of state but I will continue to have Kristen take care of my hair when I am in San Francisco. Alise has been cutting my hair for about a year now, and I've received more compliments on it than in the previous 5 years when I was going somewhere else. She is very thorough and precise, taking the time to cut my hair so it looks great and grows out perfectly. She has also helped me deal with my grey in a very natural way, adding lowlights while still letting the silver shine through. Alise is very responsive to my complaints about how my hair behaves and finds ways to make it manageable. The salon is very comfortable and low key. All the stylists are highly trained and have chosen to work in a low key environment when they could be at more glamorous places. Highly recommended!! read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Wendy since "the old days" at Blade Runners on Haight- I can't believe it's been 10 years! She's amazing, and I'm kind of a nervous nelly when it comes to hair cuts. I also only get about 3 haircuts a year, and there's no judgement. :) She just cuts in a way that looks good growing out... Wendy just has skills, and will never, ever do you wrong. Plus she's just a lovely person to talk to and gives an incredible head massage with your shampoo. ALSO, I recently started getting highlights with Megan (Wendy cuts hair only) and believe me, the talent runs deep in this salon! I had resisted highlights for so long, because the ones I had in my early 20s were so obvious and brassy and... not good. Megan instantly understood what I wanted (brighter blond, back to what I was naturally when I was younger, but nothing drastic), and I've gotten lots of compliments on how natural it looks. She knows my head, my freaky cowlick (really really hard to cut around it!) and how to give me a cut that makes me look and feel sassy. 5 stars for Lauren as a person + 3 stars for my haircut / 2 = 4 First off, I am unbearably awkward when you put me in a chair. I don't know why, I'm really not that terrible in other situations. Dentists and hairdressers both get the worst of it (I should seriously come with a warning label). Lauren was a fantastic sport about it, super duper nice, and clearly trying really hard to get around my awk-barricade. She has my appreciation for that alone. I really liked her as a person, but my haircut - underwhelming. I kept trying to tell her that I suffered from some pretty serious frizz issues, and she still only put a tiny amount of product in my hair. My blow out looked gorgeous - for an hour and then it just sort of... puffed. She basically fixed up my layers, but I really can't say that my hair looked that much better than it had before, which is a bummer, because this place was adorable and I was really hoping this would end my search for the perfect stylist. Bottom line: I've had better haircuts for cheaper in San Francisco. read more

I first started going to Megan over a year ago by recommendation of 3 different friends. In my 27 years I've never had a stylist that knows how to get my color right, let alone has the ability to suggest good ways on how to get through the awkward stage of the growing-out process.
