Since 1948 the Dreamette has been serving delicious soft ice cream and has become a neighborhood icon in the Westside. It's quite an idyllic ice cream stand reminding me of ice cream shops of yesteryears. Recently it was named one of the best soft ice cream shops. We on the Westside are not surprised, we knew that all along. My favorite is the chocolate vanilla twist dipped in chocolate peanut butter, super yummy. Although they only accept cash no one cares. There is always a line especially during the weekend. When I stopped by this past Sunday there was no place to park but no one cared. They came peacefully. My grandmother used to ride her bike from her old house to here back in the 50s and 60s, and still, to this day, my grandfather, her husband, and I drive over there to indulge in their dream ice creams after finishing up running errands together. I still love the value of their old-fashioned icecream cones, but I don't mind splurging for their milkshakes and specialty desserts where you can customize your treat with a plethora of add-ons. Expect to spend around $5 and some change if you go that route. Overall, it's still well worth coming here and enjoying Dreamette icecream anytime of the year. I was hoping to like this place as much as some of the other reviewers. This is a soft-serve ice cream place that only has outdoor seating, so it isn't the best to go to in the summer heat. The benches my friends and I sat on were scorching hot and uncomfortable to sit on due to this. A couple of the benches were covered in shade, but we let some younger children sit on those and decided to sit in the sun-exposed benches. There was a small line (about 6-7 people) when I went. The service is quick, so that made my wait in line only about 2 minutes. The menu has a lot of variety. You can get normal ice cream or ice cream dipped in something served in a cup/cone. There are also mixed ice creams where you choose a flavor (e.g. pina colada, strawberry) or dessert to add (e.g. brownies, oreos, butterfingers). I got the small vanilla ice cream mixed with chocolate chip cookie dough. This was yummy at first, but after taking a few bites, the sweetness built up in my mouth. It felt like diabetes lol. One of my friends got a small oreo, and the other friend got a large pina colada. We all threw our ice creams away after eating half of it and agreed to go to the gym afterwards because the ice cream was way too sugary. I felt tired from the sugar spike after eating half of a small. In spite of the exponential sweetness, I liked how Dreamette gave me a lot of chocolate pieces and cookie dough, which was chewy. I felt a little unsafe in this neighborhood because of the gas station next door to Dreamette. There were people with their pants hanging low/underwear showing who bought alcohol and kind of loitered nearby as we ate our ice cream. Note that this was around 1-2 pm on a Saturday afternoon. We parked at this gas station because all the parking spaces at Dreamette were taken. Overall, I did not enjoy Dreamette as much as I wanted to. The people at the gas station were a little sketchy, the benches we sat on were uncomfortably warm, and the ice cream itself was too sugary and sweet. read more

This Jacksonville landmark (seriously, around since 1948) is such a tradition and has so many loyalists, that I think it's appeal is more about that than the actual ice cream. It's soft serve, in vanilla or chocolate or strawberry. But the bit of magic comes in the fairly long list of flavors to dip it in, including a bright pink cotton candy that my girl saw on the cover of Jacksonville Magazine and has been wanting since. We finally made the trip, and she wasn't disappointed. And the kid size cone came in at just $1.80 and was plenty big for her. My older one and I got a small, which isn't that small and still under $3. I opted for vanilla with chocolate peanut butter dip. It was... okay. The dip flavors are fun but it's waxy and I will just skip next time. (I've been before but it's been a while and I forgot and was lured in by the fun options) There are a few small benches, but it was raining so we just stood under the awning and ate. Some comments about the neighborhood being "sketchy" are not familiar with the neighborhood. Sure, it's a variety of people and older and isn't just a cookie cutter middle class neighborhood, but is truly a great place. And the variety of people and homes is a bonus.
