As soon as you walk in you see friendly faces telling you that you can sit wherever you like. My favorites: -sweet iced tea -chicken wings -mac and cheese -pecan pie -homemade chips My sister had the BBQ chicken and said its like the chicken is melting in your mouth, along with the BBQ. Always wanted to go here and Saturday my Fiancé and I decided to go. We were greeted with a "Welcome in sit wherever you want". Our waiter was Braxton and he was extremely nice and welcoming. He also has a great sense of humor, which made our visit even better.So the food, I ordered the 2 meat chicken and sausage plate with green beans and coleslaw. Highly recommend both. My Fiancé ordered the pulled pork with potato salad (mustard) base and baked beans ( not a fan of the beans too sweet for me). We also had the Buffalo wings which were delicious. The fries here are very basic but fresh hot and yummy. Braxton came by to check on us and refilled our drinks but did not hover either. Very clean dining room and definitely a family friendly feel. Busy to go orders and steady flow of customers in the dining area, overall we will definitely come back. Their pulled pork was moist and very tasty. Lunch on the road through Mobile was a super tender chopped pork sandwich, crunchified fried okra, and unsweetened tea from a very sweet & funny waitress. The sandwich bun was thinner than the usual BBQ joint white bread buns, but made up for it by being plenty sturdy enough to contain the quarter pound version of the sammie I ordered. As noted the fried okra was nicely drenched in a thin'ish batter before its bath in the fryer, which sent it to the table piping hot. Their Alabama white sauce was like mayo to which there was an extra vinegar (apple cider vinegar?) bite added. It made a pleasant contrast to the crunchy okra. Their house red BBQ sauce for the sandwich was also vinegary tart. Not sweet like KC style sauces. The red sauce was also quite thin, nearly watery, in body. It had a nice peppery bite to it, which zinged up the roasted pork butt sandwich quite well. The pork was way tender, but not as juicy as a pork butt might imply and not as much as I, as a personal preference, would have liked. Pecan pie for dessert was a thinner (in height) piece than usual, though of the usual 1/6th of a pie size. But it had a much roastier flavor to the substantial layer of pecans than typical pieces of pecan pie. The gelatin filling under the nuts was not as sticky sweet as usual pies either. This slice was all about letting the pecans be the star of the show. And they were!! The tables were clean, staff was jackin' & jammin' taking care of customers, while still keeping the interplay light & fun. When in Mobile, hit up Dreamland for a mighty tasty & fun chow down. I swear they cooked this food yesterday, forgot to season it, and thought they could drown the pork in BBQ sauce to cover it up. The chicken does not even have salt in it. I'm thankful for the tiny portions of meat- it's less I feel like I have to eat. The Mac n cheese was awesome. read more

I know this is probably going to show that my true colors have origins from another part of the country .... I know that so many people love Dreamland BBQ and think they are the greatest thing to happen to ever happen to BBQ. Is it partially the hype that built them up too much, possibly? When you go to dreamland you get ribs, that's just what you do. I'm a pretty big fan of ribs, so that really doesn't pose a problem for me. I'm happy to get an order of fall of the bone dry rub or sauced up ribs. That's kind of where the problem is for me. These (at least the times I've had the ribs) aren't fall off the bone. In fact it would be more accurate to say stuck on the bone and have to gnaw in an attempt to get meat to come off of the bone. By the time it's done, this doesn't paint a pretty picture, you have bbq all over yourself and pieces of meat stuck between teeth. It just isn't enjoyable for me. Not what I'm looking for in an order of ribs. They are also big fans of giving you white bread to dip in BBQ sauce ... don't really like white bread, so that isn't tops on my list either. The place is classic ... it looks legit and smells legit when you walk in. I would close with, this is just me and how I like my ribs. There is a good chance you may like them .... there are plenty of other reviews that rave about how good this place is. So, I'd say give them a try and make up your own mind. read more

I don't know what that was but it was not barbecue. There was way too much vinegar in the sauce, the ribs were still stuck to the bone and none of the meat fell off I had to rip it apart with my teeth like a savage. I asked for an unsweet tea and immediately when the server left the table he shouted for a sweet tea. The rib tips were burnt and covered with sauce to cover the burn and the cartilage was not pulled out. The only thing I enjoyed was the chips, which have enough seasoning on them, don't put salt, you will regret it. The mac and cheese was standard and the beans were good. I fell asleep on a road trip and woke up in the parking lot. I was impressed with the look of the place and no idea what to expect. Normally I've researched most anywhere I eat. The grill out in the dining room is pretty cool. It all seemed great at first glance. After being seated I was met with a ho-hum feeling radiating from everyone that continued throughout the entire visit. Our server had zero personality and was almost curt. I had some questions about the Smoked Wings and she looked at me like I had three heads. I won't go on to much but she was burnt out and that was obvious. Have you ever felt like you were bothering someone with your needs? Yep, she made it obvious that we were, not even trying to hide it. Food was just meh... Nothing at all stood out as a star fetcher. I tried some of most of the plates we had and the chopped pork was the best thing they served us that day. Smoked wings are not whole as I expected them to be. There was ZERO smoke flavor to them. White sauce was ok but didn't help them that much. I dunked them in the sauce they brought with the white bread and it helped a bit. Really unimpressed... The ribs are completely opposite of what I prefer. They are grilled spare ribs. Yuck! Tough with little smoked flavor. They cut them for you, that's good because you couldn't tear them apart and you would likely need a clever to make a cut. Mac and Cheese was ok but the beans weren't. I thought the best side I had were the chips. My wife seemed to enjoy her potato. I didn't try it. The desserts were good however. The chocolate stuff tasted homemade and the banana pudding was tasty. If you are reading this and ever make it to Memphis for any reason hit me up.... Stopped in to eat thinking that the food would be similar quality to the Tuscaloosa location. WRONG!!! BBQ chicken was watery, chicken tenders looked like they came out of a frozen Tyson chicken bag, fries were cold. Wait staff were continually talking among themselves, I had to track them down to get a bill so I could leave my mostly uneaten meal behind, never to return again. Stopped by here on the way to Mobile after visiting family in Birmingham. Wait staff very helpful. 92 year old mother can't eat an adult portion trying to figure out how to downsize her serving. Waitress promptly suggested a kids meal. Consisted of pulled pork with sauce on side, a side dish and drink. Fantastic!!! Know what am I gonna order? They are known for ribs and pulled pork. I go for the rib plate which includes two sides. Choose FFs and Nanna pudding. I immediately notice the side dishes are larger than in the past. Been over a year since last visit. The ribs were great as well as the side of fries. Mom enjoyed her pulled pork and the serving size was perfect. What made it a five on the trip was the nanna pudding in a larger dish. I didn't know what to expect from Alabama BBQ. I was driving home with a friend from Atlanta. Still several hours from New Orleans we pulled off to see if it would be DREAMLAND or a nightmare. I must say that it was DREAMLAND. When we pulled onto the parking lot you could smell smoked meat. We walked into the joint and was met with a wave of smoke and a BIG southern "How do you do?" We were seated promptly and ordered SWEET Tea. Let's just say it was light brown sugar water in a cup. They kind that tastes like cold candy. We ordered some pork nachos and sausage for appetizers. Both came out and were fantastic. The bar started high. While eating we overheard some delightful conversation from the table over about saving the extra bunny bread to make sandwiches. See, they give you tons of extra bread. We decided to did the bread in BBQ sauce and make it a third appetizer. For the main course my friend had a BIG Pork sandwich with slaw. He said it was a dreamy delicious mess. I had the trio plate. Ribs (melt in your mouth good), chicken (moist and flavorful) and pork (tender and taste). I had Mac-n-cheese and baked beans for the sides. Both above par for a BBQ Joint. We finished off the meal with Banana Pudding. The kind I like to imagine some older lady makes and brings to a Baptist Church Potluck. I will definitely return to dreamland the next time I travel through Mobile. Traveling they on our way home. A friend said this place has the best ribs ever, so we had to try them. I would say they are kid friendly, pretty good service, and the food was good, but certainly not the best ever. Being from St. Louis, when they brought out a plate of Wonder sandwich bread and little containers of bbq sauce, and then I saw people take a slice of bread and dip it in the sauce and eat it, I was shocked. Did not try it, so can't tell you how it was. I shudder. As I said, the ribs were ok, potato salad was good, Mac and cheese just ok, fried okra was good. OMG the ribs looked delicious nice char and outside. Lots of meat. Did not even need sauce. But I put a little of a few pieces and sauce is light and tasty and a little heat. We bought bottle to take with us. Also bought some banana pudding to go because we have had it before and it is awesome. Full slab $22. Sides $4 each. Quart of sauce $6. Quart banana pudding $12. This place was recommend by some locals so we figured we check it out. Coming from Texas we had some high standards lol. They didn't have brisket which should have been a for us Texans. I got the ribs and chicken and was disappointed. Both were dry and the ribs were tough. You can taste the smoke but they where cooked to fast in my opinion. Sauce was ok. Staff was very inattentive, the meat was very dry, I have dined at may dreamland locations this was a POOR representation of what I have come to expect. A glass of hot tea?!? Seriously there were maybe 5 ice cubes in it I asked 3 times for a cup of ice and it never came. The Sausage was great so was the potato salad. So the only good thing that I can say about this restaurant is the ambiance is nice. It's more like a sports bar than a barbecue place. First time customer, last time customer. We got chopped chicken that was sooo dry the ribs were not tender and they certainly did not fall off the bone which is what we expected because of reviews that we have read. They only have one barbecue sauce it's nasty it's vinegar and spicy they have no choices for children no choices for people who don't like that sort of barbecue. They serve you canned bush beans and macaroni and cheese from a can they serve you sliced bread from a bag of bread they bought at the grocery store. unable this trip to get to the original Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, we jumped on the chance to visit the location in Mobile. Unlike most traditional BBQ joints, they are famous here for grilling pork ribs over hickory wood open fire pit and basting them with a vinegar-based sauce rather than slow smoking them. What a fragrance as you enter! Also available here is what they call Alabama Twang sauce, their version of the mayo-based sauce seemingly only a thing in Alabama. It appeared though that Dreamland serves this mainly as a dipping sauce rather than something they regularly apply to the meats. For our order we chose to share a combo plate of pork spareribs & chicken plus adding one ala carte sausage link. With sides of coleslaw and potato salad. The meats arrived thankfully without a pre service dousing of sauce as we are not really fond of the vinegar-based sauces. Served in cup on the side. It is a strong sauce IMO and didn't really agree with our taste. But the ribs tasted very good so the sauce adds to the flavor as they are grilled without a doubt. The ribs have a very distinctive and enjoyable pull from the bone, unlike many we've tried that are overcooked and mushy. The hickory also imparts a nice smoky flavor to the ribs. We enjoyed these very much. The chicken came as a leg and thigh combo which was great for me but not so much for my wife who far prefers white meat. The chicken was even better than the ribs IMO. Not sure it gets the same sauce basting the ribs do (should have asked) but the dark meat works so well with the hickory grilling that it almost tastes like it had been smoked. And the Alabama Twang sauce was an excellent compliment to this meat. The sausage was a bit of a disappointment, not very hot, bland, and low on any discernible spice. Our potato salad was of a variety similar to a baked potato with what appeared to be a sour cream base rather than a mayo/mustard/pickle recipe. Good but not my preferred style. The slaw was interesting as it included celery seed in the dressing which we found quite tasty. The indoor open fire grilling pit is really impressive to observe. Racks of ribs, half chickens, and numerous pork shoulders for their pulled pork all looking very succulent. A nice young man tending it answered our questions very easily and seemed to enjoy his work. But oh my, it was very warm spending just a brief time in front of that fire. Not a job for me. If you are anywhere near a Dreamland location, I suggest you seek them out and try their unique take on BBQ. Worth a stop. read more

There are BBQ chains and there are hole in the wall bbq places. Dreamland started as one of those small holes in the 1950s and has expanded. Why? Because it's that's damn good. Oh yeh, and the customer service is top notch. Margo, the GM is super friendly and he is usually out and about talking to his customers when he is not smoking those yummy meats. They always start you off with some white bread and their original bbq sauce to dip it in. It is delicious with a little kick. I have an obsession with baked potatoes stuffed with bbq. I get the one with pork or chicken. It's stuffed with sour cream, cheese, green onions, bbq sauce. Their pork is so juicy and so filling, if you leave hungry, you have a tapeworm or something. My husband loves the sausage plate with their bbq beans and okra or Mac and cheese. The sausage has a nice smoky flavor and smell. They have THE best sweet tea and like I've said before, I'm picky about sweet tea. It's made by the Leroy Hill coffee and tea company and it's brewed fresh all day long. Okay so after all that food and you are stuffed to the brim, you absolutely must get some banana pudding. Even if you get it to go. They have several different sizes. Your sauce is real good too. As a community service, I think y'all should load up some of your banana pudding & deliver it to that unnamed joint.
