You had me at drunk Chinese food! Drunken Kitchen is run out of a commercial kitchen (Square Kitchen on 800 S) for takeout or delivery on Fridays. What a terrific idea to offer hearty, spicy food when those Friday late night cravings hit! Hearty, delicious dumplings and tasty noodles. I felt my Dan Dan noodles could've had more noodles and less toppings, but that's a minor complaint. My order was ready when promised and the food was piping hot and delicious! Will definitely need to try their mapo tofu and three cup chicken soon! Drunken Kitchen's social media suggests that Taiwanese/Chinese beverages will also be offered soon. read more

Wow! This place blew me away. For some reason I started getting ads for this place in instagram and the food looked amazing so I had to check it out. Spoiler alert: the food was amazing. We ordered the vegetarian pot stickers which were prepared in a more traditional way than most places I've been to in SLC. The Dan Dan was awesome and the beef noodle soup I ordered looked so delicious I immediately started eating and forgot to take a picture (It looks exactly like the on their website). I really wanted to love Drunken Kitchen. It's convenient, and Salt Lake City could really use more diversity in its Asian food scene. However, after visiting twice, I'm left underwhelmed. Nothing I've tried so far really stands out. The Dandan noodles were my favorite, but even those didn't win over the rest of my family. The fried chicken was decent, but beyond that, it was a letdown. The pork belly bowl was filled with unrendered, inedible white fat, with very little actual meat. The fried rice was dry, lacking flavor or any real appeal, and the three cup chicken? Nothing to write home about. To make things worse, I've been inundated with ads from Drunken Kitchen on every platform for months, and it's starting to get on my nerves. Wow. Top 3 meals I've ever had in the valley. I had the Dan Dan noodles and added the broth, just so beyond flavorful and delicious. The noodles are handmade in house! Perfect texture and huge portion! I also got the pan fried buns...these are also made with care. The bun you can tell is homemade not from frozen box. 10/10. They're inside of a mini food hall, but you can see the guys rolling out the noodles and dough right behind the counter. Super friendly too. Pan-Fried Pork Buns - this is a very authentic pork bun, it isn't the same as something you'll get out of the freezer section of the supermarket with a sweet bread and sugar sauce. Served with house made chili. Pork Pot Stickers - legitimately bursting at the seams, juicy, fresh and amazing. Marinated Cucumbers - this is a staple fridge food at my home so I was really excited to try these and they didn't disappoint. The extra marinade made THE BEST dipping sauce for dumplings. Dan Dan Noodle +Add Broth from Taiwanese Beef Soup - okay let's talk about these noodles, I feel BLESSED to have eaten these. Personally the best meal of my year so far. I wanted to try the noodle dish wet as well and it did not disappoint. (I saved my extra broth and ate with some slim noodle today) Fried Rice + Add Pork - this is a huge serving, and thank god because it was so so good I couldn't get enough. I'll be eating this gratefully for three days! Side Pickled Serranos - just get em, save them in the extra cucumber marinade and then you have an easy spicy kick for all of the dishes. I'd been meaning to get back to this place and bring an appetite. I previously tried their pork buns. Which are great, and very generous. Full disclosure, Square Kitchen Eatery is owned by a guy i know, who also owns Comfort Bowl, which is also in this space, along with Shiba Boba, which is owned by a good friend of mine, and Argentina Empanada, who i don't really know. DK is like a friend of a friend that i don't really know. I paid full price, plus tip. I didn't even remind them that they've met me twice. Which was dumb because there were (and are) some pretty good coupon codes, like for a free appetizer, which is like a $10 value. So it goes. Add them on IG or something. Ethics in culinary quasi-journalism. DK is transitioning to restaurant service after success as a delivery-only-plus-occasional-takeout operation. They're not yet really practiced in Western-style restaurant service norms. They may forget to tell you that since everything is hand-made to order, you may be waiting 15 or more minutes for your food. Or that the potstickers are served insanely hot. But it IS all hand-made. Even the noodles and wrappers. Even their sambal and chili oil, which you can purchase as well. If you have small children in tow who are hungry, you may want to ask for a side of rice served right away, or get them an empanada. Argentina empanada is good i had their empanadas at a party once. The portions were pretty generous. I am a very large man and this was a big meal for me. You'll notice that the potstickers are substantially larger than what you get at most asian restaurants. And since they're hand-made, the filling isn't a compacted little wad knocking around in the wrapper like some cheap frozen potsticker. It's nice and loose. I burned the roof of my mouth when i went for the first one right after it was served. I have no regrets but have learned my lesson. The bottom of the potstickers was crispy and the top of the wrapper was very tender, not tough at all. The dipping sauce was exceptionally rich, with good depth of flavor, and just a touch of heat. I could drink a mug of it. I was a little tempted to drink the remains of the bowl like a shot, but didn't want to come off as weird so i just took a good sip before bussing my own table. On some level, i know that it's mostly soy sauce, vinegar, and oil, but it's very far removed from what you get at most chinese or japanese restaurants. I'd never had dan-dan noodles before. You can order them mild, medium, hot, or super hot. I'm a white guy who loves very spicy thai food -- sometimes so hot that it chaps my lips. "Hot" dan-dan noodles here had a good, pleasant back-end heat but not something that will have you drinking more water. The essence of this dish is savory, and i heartily recommend it. Like i said i am a big guy, and just this bowl could have satisfied me for the night. If you're on a tight budget looking for lunch, it wouldn't be all that unreasonable to share this order with someone close. I've been using chopsticks since i was a 4-year-old haole boy in Laie in 1979, but it seems like there must be a strategy to getting a peanut in every bite that i haven't learned yet. Maybe a way to pull apart the yu choy leaves too. Or you could request a fork. It was not cheap. $33 plus tax and tip. But it's worth it (and seek out those coupon codes). I fully expect DK to have a stand-alone restaurant before too many years have passed. Maybe a James Beard award as well, who knows. read more

Was really expecting to love this place, the reviews are great. However, this was one of the most disappointing meals we have ever had. We got two beers, each one was good but very expensive. We got pork buns to start, followed by the chicken sandwich and dan dan noodles. Everything tasted like fry oil. This is definitely not what you would expect for an $80 meal. The food is okay. But the service is horrible. Here is what happened. My friends and me went for a quick dinner, and the store looks pretty empty when we arrived. We ordered two noodle bowls. Then things went down the road pretty quickly. We waited for at least 20 minutes (according to our credit card payment time) at the table for our noodles, which is unexpected. I went to check with the server to see what's going on. The server was very impatient and keep saying that the short rib we ordered need 15 minutes to prepare. I explain that we have been waiting for almost 30 minutes. In a few minutes, the server stopped at our table and repeated that "the meat takes 15 minutes". I got a bit upset and emphasized again we have been waiting for 20 minutes at least, and ask him not to lie about the time. My friend went softer by saying that we are hungry at 9:30pm after a long flight. The server then started accusing us not ordering appetizers if we were hungry. I got very upset on that comment. I mean, nobody warned us that a noodle soup will take such a long time to cook. Later, we heard him cursing us using unpleasant language on his way back to the kitchen. In general, the food was okay. The server might have gone through a bad day for other reasons, but it's not cool to say those things to your customers. read more

Worst "asian" food I've ever had; it was so bad, I'm actually offended. Total waste of ingredients. I hate panda express, but this is so bad, I'd gladly eat at panda over this. Even at first glance, the food didn't look the right color, and looked incredibly suspicious. Flavor was absolutely horrendous. How do you turn mapo tofu into a suspicious, watered down, overly sweet gravy. Honestly at that point, just buy the sauce packets from the asian market. I honestly had high hopes for this place as I saw their ads and as a Taiwanese, I love checking out Taiwanese restaurants. Firstly the positives, the drinks were great! I wish they had some more choices for beer/tap but it was still a decent amount. The service was awesome, the servers and hosts were friendly and very sweet. The ambience and setup were also cool, especially with the open kitchen. However, I was disappointed in the food to say the least. We ordered a decent amount of dishes to try (Taiwanese fried chicken, mapo tofu, crab Rangoon dip, Dan Dan mian and Taiwanese pork belly. Everything was properly cooked, however the flavors weren't great. The first dish I tried was the Taiwanese fried chicken which is my absolute favorite dish of my childhood so I have high standards for it. The flavor of the chicken was good and it was fried perfectly crispy and juicy. However I wish the chicken was marinated so the meat inside also held more flavor as most of the seasoning/flavor was on the exterior. The Taiwanese fried chicken was the favorite of all the dishes. Dan Dan Mian was lacking flavor, it wasn't as flavorful as most Dan Dan mian but the noodles were cooked perfectly al dente. The pork belly had good flavor but I don't think I would call it Taiwanese, it was very sweet and the spices used were a lot different than what I've had before. Definitely threw me off but it wasn't bad, just different. The crab rangoon dip was also very different flavor wise. It was overly sweet in my opinion and the flavor reminded me more of a spicy Mayo crab mix of sushi rather than crab rangoon. It wasn't bad but also not what I was expecting for crab rangoon. Lastly the mapo tofu which was by far the worst dish of them all, it was overly soupy and the flavor was off as well as not being spicy at all despite ordering it spicy. I understand there are so many various versions of mapo tofu however most of them have a similar strong flavor base of doubanjian (bean paste) which I didn't taste too much. It was also lacking any spice like peppers (white/black pepper and Sichuan peppercorn). It was just disappointing to eat. I apologize for the lengthy review and harsh criticism but I hope this is taken as constructive criticism rather than an attack as I would like to give them another try. read more

Love the atmosphere in the place, hip industrial. Food was very disappointing. The marinated cucumbers were mushy and super saturated with soy sauce, saltiness was over the top. Chicken was nice and tender but way over-spiced with Chinese 5-spice, great if you like licorice flavor. Bok choy was pretty much inedible it was tough as nails. Eggplant was also over-spiced, with ...not sure, ...rice vinegar and many other flavors that were trying too hard to make eggplant something it's not.
