This place is definitely overpriced even by NYC standards but the service is impeccable and their outdoor patio setup was wonderful and located in a quiet neighborhood. We made a reservation for 4 + dog and baby, and was very pleased to see that they saved a 6 seater for us so we could have some space. The food was just ok, pretty pricey but the portions are HUGE and beautifully presented. I think where they shine is the service. When our baby woke from a nap, somehow they seamlessly coordinated a dance where they brought a high chair, removed the stroller, all without us almost not noticing lol. They brought our friend's dog water and treats, and they continuously checked up on us and refilled coffee and water. Inside is a few seats plus the most gorgeous setup for pastries and cakes!! I wanted to bring some pastries to my friend's French father, who has been in the resto biz his whole life (ie he knows his stuff). I chose 6 chocolate éclairs and they were expensive, but very delicious. The service was also very professional and friendly. The only critique that he asked me to make on his behalf was about the little paper ticket that said Duc de Lorraine on each éclair. He said they were "inutile" and "une manque d'éthique". It is an unfortunate predicament when one has known a place for many many years, and have watched it erode and change into something unrecognizable. Since the early 80's (probably earlier) my family has been going there for cakes and patisseries. A new era has come to Le Duc in which it no longer is proud of being an incredible bakery; It now is a bistro? Café? Resto? I don't know. I do know that it has lost it's charm and the amazing baked goods it had when it knew it was JUST an amazing French Bakery. I guess the silver lining is that I no longer need to make special trips out of my way, I can buy similar goods at my local Première Moisson where the staff and prices are much more welcoming. I'm sure the staff was overwhelmed but they were beyond professional and served us an excellent thing I don't remember the name of but had bread berries and mascarpone. Highly recommended. read more

As a child it always was a treat for my parents to bring home assorted pastries from my favorite patisserie so it was with those fond memories that I suggested on my first visit back to MTL in many years that we stop off for lunch. We actually ordered brunch style. I ordered a crepe with a glaze, marscapone and berries topping which was priced at a stratospheric $36 and my daughter had an omelette with spinach and goat cheese at $34 which included fantastic roasted potatoes. We also had a croissant and almond croissant. Nothing was outstanding but nonetheless the meal ranged from good to very good. Although located in the Queen Mary neighborhood the restaurant can be likened to a quaint French bistro. Anyone who says this place has gone down hill, I'd like to know what hill they are referring to? This place is a topnotch spot to experience some of the freshest pastries, cheese, meats and pate second to Paris as one can find!..Seriously. While exploring Cote-des-Neige, my friends and I passed by this corner patisserie and was drawn in by the most incredible smells I've ever experienced. Words can not describe the assortment of edibles Duc De Lorraine had to offer, so I added a lot pictures - they are as good as they look! Staff here were incredibly friendly and hospitable. Realizing that this was out first time there, one of the staff members broke out multiple tasting of cheese and fresh bread for us to try on the house. The aged cheddar and Guinness cheese was my favorite and unlike anything I have encountered, oh soo good! Note: They have an extremely reasonable lunch special: $8C gets you a bowl of the soup du jour, 1/2 sandwich, and a drink of your choice. There is a small glass enclosed dining area in the back that has a nice view of the area. This is the perfect place to hit before heading up the hundred plus steps to L'Oratoire St. Joseph. I Will definitely be returning to Duc De Lorraine again on my annual pilgrimage to be with Saint Andre. read more

We found this lovely cafe by luck on our last day in Montreal. We had just spent the morning at St Joseph's Oratory and wanted to pick up some quick snacks before we started our long drive home. We stopped by Duc de Lorraine with the intention of getting some pastries to go. We were greeted right away by the attentive and friendly staff. The decor is quaint and inviting. The staff struck up a conversion and upon finding out we were leaving Montreal, convinced us to sit down for a 15-minute quick lunch. The quiche and cappuccino were delicious by themselves but the waitstaff and atmosphere made it one of our favorite memories of Montreal. We've been recommending this cafe to our my friends who plan to visit Montreal since and we can't wait to go back. If you get the chance, don't skip dining in. read more

This is such a cute little place! My parents have been bringing home pastries and cakes for as long as I can remember. Recently, I've been meeting up with a friend of the family here to pick up some freelance work from her. I had the occasion to check out the menu and pick up a wonderful strawberry cake for my parent's anniversary. The staff there is always courteous and helpful, and not saying anything when I stand around with my friend chatting for a while. The cake I purchased was filled with fresh strawberries, cream, and had a pink marzipan topping - very European. We all enjoyed it and I would purchase another cake from them for my next special occasion. The only quibble....it's a little bit expensive, even for the high quality. read more

We planned a surprise birthday party (a small one!) here at Duc de Lorraine. What I loved about this place is its super nice, friendly, polite and helpful staff. They are handsome too They have a fabulous terrace surrounded by trees and overlooking the Saint Joseph Cathedral. There is a always French music playing in the background making it an even more romantic place. I found the pastry their forté however they offer food too. My Wife and I stopped here after finishing a day touring the city. We sat outside in their beautifully arranged outdoor dining area across from a small park. We had a drink and calamari App and both were great. The old fashion was made in the proper way and was excellent. her martini was equally delicious. Calamari was cooked perfectly. We also bought a Chocolate cake for us to take back to the states. It lasted a full 2 days before we were able to try it and it was still delicious. The ambience is great, the service was friendly. My husband and I stopped in for coffee and dessert our second night in Canada. The host was very kind and helped us with parking questions. The waiter greeted us with French and I asked if he spoke English which he said with a smile on his face "a little." I explained we were there for dessert and coffee. He collected the menus and brought new ones. He then collected the silverware and said the "French people like to wash dishes." Ok? My husband and I looked over the menu and looked up the desserts on our phones so we knew what we were ordering. My husband ordered a coke and I ordered a coffee. The waiter brought my husband sugar and said "here's sugar in case it's not sweet enough." It was very snarky and seemed to be a joke of my husband's weight. After we received our dessert, the waiter came back to the table to collect the dishes and said "that took about two minutes." I was taken back by how rude he was. This was our first time in Canada and I was worried there was an attitude towards Americans. However, this was our only bad experience. Since the french toast from Duc de Lorraine has been circulating around social media, I figured I'd give my own input and see what this is all about. Brioche French toast, with whipped citrus ricotta, blueberry compote with maple drizzle at $16.00. The citrus infusion of the ricotta paired well with the sweetness of the blueberry compote. Unfortunately what made me a little sad was that the french toast lacked that extra crisp that La Fabrique has. Absolument Formidable!!! Went for a drive and came upon this French Bistro. Upon entry, we were greeted with welcoming smiles and the scent of fresh bread! Our eyes landed on the pastry cases of delectable delights from croissants and quiches to chocolate mousses and eclairs. We decided to have dinner first and ordered the French Onion soup and Beef Carpaccio. Hands down THE best French Onion Soup! The soup was cheesy with toasted brioche croutons and a homemade broth. The Beef Carpaccio was melt in your mouth goodness and the cheese delectable. Both starters were GENEROUS! We later ordered the Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame (both with frites). Wow! The bechamel sauce was creamy and the ham was plentiful. The servers were gracious and checked in to ensure we were taken care of. We were unable to finish and the staff packed everything up in a beautiful Duc de Lorraine tote bag (classy touch). Everytime I come to Montreal, I like to stop there as this place has a special meaning to me ; this is where my parents got their wedding cake made 30 years ago! The local is very lovely and French looking, all the products are nicely displayed and there is a very cute dinning room and a nice patio during the summer. They offer some delicious sandwiches and pastries and it does wonders for a nice and casual lunch. The food is so good that I would give it a 5 if it was not for the not so attentive service we received on our last visit. We ordered cheeseburgers and my boyfriend said no sauce no mayo . We ordered appetizer , fries calamari was mediocre . Then waited 60 minutes for the burgers and his came with with mayo . We showed the waiter who just took it away . Another employee came over to tell me there was no Mayo but I told him I tasted it and the other waiter seen it too . Granted, making pastries of such a high quality and for so many years it no easy task - however I would never have expected their Religieuse au Café (coffee cream stuffed pastry treat) would cost $7 (and now ironically days later raised to $7.25). I'll openly admit that is was a real treat, and big enough to save a couple of bites for later in the day. As a point of interest the croissants were larger than most, but not as good as many and again pretty expensive at $3, so perhaps there is a trend going on. Indeed, the place is lovely to the eye and they have numerous authentic French bread and pastry treats to eat on site or take out. Regardless the decor and service are above average and is worth a visit if you are prepared to 'shell' out. Note: If you think the pastries are expensive, checkout the coffee prices. The brunch are lunch are no steal either. I'm all for reputation deserving of a little bump up, but these levels are even more than I imagined. read more

This place has been iconic for French pastries for over 20 years. Sadly, not everything they make is exquisite. I have had amazing pastries in the past but I had their croissants recently and was very disappointed. Unfortunately the croissants were very soft, the layers weren't flaky enough and far from what you would expect from a reputable French bakery. Perhaps you may want to stay away from their croissants and try other items they offer. Service wise: the young lady that took our order was very nice but the host was quite unpleasant and rude. I can't speak to the quality of the general menu, because it was quite expensive ($26 for a mac and cheese!) although the "entrée" poutine we had, for $12, was plenty for a lunch for three people, plus the pastries we had at the end. Speaking of the pastries: this place is an excellent bakery. Done in a traditional French style, the bakery boasts pastries, cakes and tarts with chocolate, fruit, crème patissière, praline and many more flavours. There were at least 15 macaron varieties! I had a praline éclair and it was amazing. My mum had a lemon tart (they were out of the meringue and a few other things). My step-dad had some kind of chocolate thing (I forget!). We all stopped talking to enjoy the food. It was amazing. Seriously amazing. Went here to get three pastries for a birthday and a small coffee. Every pastry tasted Devine. The coffee was good too but prices are way too steep. 7$ plus tax for each pastry and 4$ plus tax for a regular coffee. My favorite pastry was the royale. It had a crunchy Ferrero Rocher style cookie inside and it just melted in your mouth. The meringue pie was also superb. I would skip on the opera next time. By the time our mains (quiche and croque) came around, we were not even hungry. Disappointing because the food was delicious but the long wait left our appetites to be desired. I believe their kitchen is not big, and the dishes are coming out slow because of it. If you are coming here for dessert (ready made in the case) and coffee, you will be fine. This is the closest thing to a real Parisien patisserie you're going to find on this side of the North Atlantic short of getting on a plane and flying over to experience the real thing. The quality here is outstanding, like real patissieres, they do not skimp on the butter, the most essential of ingredients, so if you are on a diet, you're out of luck. That also explains why their prices are higher than their competitors. Easily the best croissants, pastries and sandwiches you'll taste on the island of Montreal. I find they have strange hours, and have a tendancy to close early so try to aim for the middle of the day. While their pastries and baked goods are the real star items here, I also have to add that their homemade sorbets are nothing to sneeze at either. read more

Duc de Lorraine has been in business for more than 50 years, and for good reasons. Having been in Paris, their pastries look and taste as if I was in a Parisian cafe. Absolutely delicious. Flaky, buttery, great quality and very reasonably priced as well. Along, with a kind and friendly staff, who is very knowledgeable I highly recommend the dark hot chocolate, made with French chocolate and tastes absolutely amazing! Their sandwiches and salads, are also outstanding. Perhaps you are wondering why a positive review and four stars? Simply and only because of the parking. Let me be upfront, parking is a nightmare! Most of the parking is only residential, or with a permit only! The VERY few spaces available, are only for 30 minutes. So what I strongly suggest is park at the St. Joseph Oratory parking lot($5) and walk 3-4 blocks to Duc de Lorraine. read more

Unfortunately, the food itself was bland and disappointing. We had a sit-down brunch and ordered their standard breakfast platters and coffee, which ran about $50-$70 per person in the end. The food wasn't "bad" per se, just somewhat mediocre and disproportionate to the price charged. You are paying for the location (that is, proximity to tourist spots) and atmosphere rather than the food. If you do come here, I've heard good things about their pastry shop - would probably get this to go rather than sitting down for brunch. Not entirely a tourist trap, but you might be disappointed if you went for the full fare. read more

I've been to Duc de Lorraine a few times this last few months. I love the location, the fact that there's plenty of space to sit outside and that a small green space separates the cafe from the traffic of Cote-des-Neiges st. With friends and family, we've tried the coffee, pastries, burgers! and breakfast items. The food style is somehow reminiscent of American eateries. I find it sad to confess that on multiple occasions I've been quite disappointed: the biggest blow was when we were served stale cold waffles with the unpleasant texture of congealed oil. Upon enquiry, our server said that they (a pastry shop!) won't have time to make waffles to order (or to toast them!!) and they bring it straight from the fridge! then she reluctantly offered to take it away if we don't like it. I've also had Caesar salad with soft tasteless cheese instead of (tasteful hard) parmesan! So I don't have particular plans for going back; except perhaps on a beautiful sunny summer day, to sit outside with a book and have some coffee... read more

Dropped by before leaving town and I have to say, the place - though it needs a little freshening up - was a nice break from the rush all over the place. The prepared food was not all that remarkable, however, the coffee was great and the latte is superb. The service and care each of the staff takes for their customers is notable. And after asking many times where our food was we find out 1 hour later that they apparently lost our order. It took 1 hour 30 minutes to get the yogurt.
