My mother in law loves to yell "You've never been to Duc de Lorraine before?" Often at parties when guests will compliment our dessert tables. Its true, once you know you know. I feel people love it, or they will complain about the parking situation or longer waits on the terrace for brunch. During covid our family brought a shovel and cleaned off the Adirondack chairs in the park across, the owner came out to help with a big smile. Duc de Lorraine has been a constant in my life since I first arrived here from New York 18 years ago. It started off as a morning place with girlfriends, to a brunch place with my fiancé, to a family lunch, dinner and some early morning brunches with my boys. The patio is dog friendly, the staff will bring a bowl of water and even a couple treats. In warmer months the terrace is so beautiful, you need to see the flowers! The chef has created a typical French bistro menu with oysters (mmm my faveeeee) steak, onion soup and even a Philly steak that has my brothers stamp of approval! Our boys love the Nutella pancakes in the morning, while my husband is a big fan of the steak benedict. I love their croissants, or even crab cakes dish with eggs - so creative! What I respect most about this business is how hard they work. The owner is a young woman who keeps it open every day of the year. Yes, last minute on Christmas - its open all day! Ive watched the evolution of this Montreal institution, how the cakes get even more beautiful year after year. All the effort the staff puts in to make a special moment in our life. Our daughter has a dance class in the area, which is how I stumbled across this lovely pastry shop. It's existed since the 1960's, you can feel the history and charm as you enter the shop! The baguettes are perfect, the cheese selection is vast, and the service is always helpful. The staff is always eager to help, or simply suggest a new cheese, or desert for our many dinner parties. The shop is divided into sections, with a staff member at each. The staff in the cake department as always so willing to help me great a special order, and they have even introduced us to the Chef creating our order! I cannot say enough about the service! The cakes and desserts are always fresh, and new creations are always available for holidays or seasonally. For christmas we choose a beautiful christmas log cake, they was created to look like a pinecone. We always receive so many compliments on what we bring home for parties! Beautiful creations, beautiful art pieces! It's a great place for lunch as well, with daily creations. Especially with a picky 5 year old, they have even helped make snack suggestions for her!! I visited from Spain 2 months ago and stopped in at Duc De Lorraine located just across from the breath taking national shrine, the St. Joseph Oratory in fabulous Montreal. I ordered the Ham and cheese Baguette a Cappuccino and a Choco-Amandine for dessert. Simply Delicious!! We Spanish take pride in our foods and I take my hat off to Duc De Lorraine. The food was divine and the service was Superb. I needed a custom cake baked for my cousin who I was visiting and spoke directly with the Manager. He was very accommodating and pleasant. He introduced me to his cake specialist and I told her what I wanted. She was a gem! She made it easy for me and she did exactly what I wanted. My cousin his guest and I were amazed at the beautifully decorated cake that tasted absolutely delicious. There is a saying, "you get what you pay for", I will say that this is so true at Duc de Lorraine. I will be returning to Montreal for many more visits and I know that this place will always be my first stop. read more
