12.6.24 This is one of the better fast food spots in the area. It's a step above the Micky Dee's, the BK's & the TB's. Someone turned me onto this chain about 10 years ago and I hadn't previously been to any of them. I was pleasantly surprised from the first time I visited. It's the same as any of the fast food concepts. There's the counter where you place your orders and pick it up just like all the rest. They're basic with their design & decorating their restaurants. The prices are reasonable. Probably a little better than McDees nowadays. I've never had any issues with service at any of their locations. It's basic fast food service. Every now and then you hit a gem of an employee at one of the locations & you feel a little lucky you received better service. But the food still tastes the same regardless. I started trying their chili dogs with mustard or one with sauerkraut & mustard. Their chili dogs are pretty darn good. Hearty chili with a lot of beans. I finally swerved over to try their chicken sandwich. Stellar for fast food. It is a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, honey mustard on a Portuguese hard roll. Those rolls are awesome. They make the sandwich. The only drawback is they take a while to cook and get the sandwich. Whenever you order one of these delicious grilled chicken sandwiches they are cooked to order. They always cook the chicken breast from raw. The wait time is worth it thought. Most of the time I have received a perfectly grill cooked juicy chicken breast. I only got a few bogies of overcooked chicken or too much muscle with a not so great cut of chicken breast. So the good definitely far outweigh the bad amounts of times on my visits. It's never going to be perfect all the time at any place you go out to eat. I recommend you try their grilled chicken sandwich on those hearty Portuguese rolls. You'll be glad you did. read more

Its bigger than the other fast food kings and made to order. Everything is made fresh. More expensive? Really? Look at the price of a number 1 and compare it to a Big Mac meal. It's the same if not cheaper and you can do curly fries or onion rings. Pro tip...Dip the onion rings in the house dressing. You're welcome. I went to Duchess today and purchased a PhillySteak for $5.38 which came with onions and peppers. It was delicious. I didn't spend much, and I had to wait awhile for them to cook it, but it was so, so good. They do make good food, but you really have to wait. They are slow. I don't get Duchess. I had it once and swore not to again, but my husband has some sort of nostalgic feeling about it and I finally agreed to try it one more time. Nope. I still don't get it. You can get the same food, but better, at a diner, and get service instead of a fast food experience. They offer burgers and nuggets like a fast food place, but also chicken parm and spaghetti. Dinners at a fast food location? Why? So I tried the chicken parm because that's what my husband claims is good. The sauce is horrible. The chicken is horrible. I'll say it again, I don't get it. Either go to a fast food spot or go to a diner, but don't waste your time with this in between hybrid that has flavorless food. I don't know how the company stays in business. This place has been in the valley for a really long time and unfortunately, you can tell. The building really needs a makeover. The inside is a little dirty feeling too. From the old tiles to the 90's-esc claw machine game. I don't think I'd ever want to sit down and eat inside here. Back in high school I got a double cheeseburger from here, it was my favorite. I loved the somewhat cripsy bun and the cheese. But my love for the burger soon stopped when I got food poisoning from it. I didn't eat here again for ten years! Then one day my dad (who is a big duchess fan) decided to get lunch here when we were out. I saw the new pulled pork sandwich. I love pulled pork! So I said, you know what? It's been ten years, they deserve another chance. So I ordered the sandwich. It was pretty good. Tasty, savory BBQ sauce and not too congealed pork. I love Duchess! If I ever go back to school and become a sociologist, I am going to do thesis on Duchess. Maybe it is because I grew up with Duchess and my father loved going, but there is something very special happening here. I can't think of any restaurant anywhere, that you can find people gathered over food having in depth conversations with such verve. I have been in Connecticut a week and have gone every day. This morning went and observed four men in there 70's discussing with gusto CT college basketball and football. Yesterday it was a family reunion. Duchess offers something for everyone, whether it be salads, wraps, hamburgers, hot dogs, all-day breakfast sandwiches, etc. The food tastes fresh and the soda machine with 108(?) soda favors is certainly enjoyable for both young and old. I enjoy their food when I'm looking for a filling, but somewhat healthier/fresher alternative than a McDonald's. However, I warn you, DO NOT COME TO THE ANSONIA DUCHESS. You will be waiting forever for your food to come! The shortest I've waited for this "fast" food was about 10 minutes and the longest was almost a half hour! What's worse is that the most I have ordered is two meals and they don't even apologize for their slow service. I have given two stars for the food and the soda machine, but AVOID THIS DUCHESS. Duchess is a weird place. It's not fast food, but it's not exactly the quality of... say... a diner. At best, Duchess can be described as your typical "burger & dog" joint. But more. The menu selection is excellent with a wide range of foods to choose from: burgers, dogs, sandwiches, breakfast, wraps, fried clams, etc. Come between 4pm and 8pm and you can choose from their "dinner" menu (spaghetti & meatballs, meatloaf and such). If your staying in then they bring the food to you (listen for your number!). If you're going out, there's seating so you can wait for you food to be made (everything cooked to order, never ahead of time). The one I'm in now (in Ansonia) recently had a major renovation done and it shows. It's brighter than it used to be, and quite frankly, much cleaner looking. The booths on the side of the dining room all have their own individual televisions so you can watch while you eat. If you don't get a side booth, don't worry. There are two good sized tvs at the front for you to watch (downside is you don't get to control what's on). Also, free Wi-Fi (which I'm using right now). The staff here is always nice and helpful. Don't be afraid to ask them what's good; they'll be happy to tell you. The best thing to come from the remodel though is the new drink system. There is, and I'm not exaggerating, 106 drink choices. Let me repeat that... 106 DRINK CHOICES! 9 flavors of Diet Coke! 8 flavors of Lemonade! And did I mention beer? Yes, beer! (Stella Artois for those wondering) The food quality is nothing to write home about honestly though. They have a pretty good turkey burger and I love the turkey, bacon & cheddar sandwich, but their burgers and hotdogs aren't anything you couldn't pick up at a supermarket. Tonight I had the meatloaf dinner and it was pretty "eh" honestly. It wasn't horrible, but it certainly wasn't worth the $8.99 I paid. This used to be a great place to go. Now they pick and choose who has to pull up and wait for their food, others, if they know you will let your food get cold so they can talk to their friends. One order was a lobster roll, wet soggy lobster that was turning its natural color. Another occasion I ordered a long dog works, the sauerkraut was almost black! I don't go here often but when i do its subpart. The food is usually dry and the fries are soggy. I just went there and got a philly cheese steak and asked for just meat and cheese. When i opened up the wrapper it was basically falling apart in my hands from all the moisture in it and it was sticking to the sandwich. It was cold looked like it was left from a precious order just waiting to be used. When i looked at the sandwich itself no joke it was half onions and peppers. We went to get dinner around 430pm and we ordered a plain burger for our kid and we were given a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, and pickles. When I went to bring it back I was given an attitude and I was told that's not what I ordered. When I showed them that my receipt said hamburger plain she just walked away and sucked her teeth. Im writing this mostly because of the nasty attitude directed at us. We also ordered Buffalo chicken nuggets. This is a simple thing to make and they ruined that too. The Buffalo chicken nuggets were definitely sitting around for awhile. There was NO Buffalo sauce. because it was all absorbed into the chicken from sitting for an hour or more. They shouldn't pour the sauce on until it's ordered. They were gross so we threw them away. The food is not fresh and their employees do not apologize when they are wrong they just blame someone else. I would not recommend this location unless you like cold old food not made the way you ordered it. I'm a fan of this duchess it is one of the few left that is clean has friendly staff and well cooked food. Big d chili cheese with bacon bits and fried onions is the way to go with well done fries. I grew up on Duchess, and it's always been my preference for burgers. Since moving to the valley I've repeatedly been disappointed by Duchess Ansonia. Tonight the drive thru took almost 15 minutes to bring out our 2 burgers and rings. When we got home, my burger did not have the extra pickles I ordered, and they put extra tomato instead of none. My husband wanted to go right back, but I waited long enough for food and just wanted dinner. Besides, it's my fault for going there.
