Checked out Duchess Friday night at 7pm and honestly, I was shocked it wasn't packed but I'm not complaining because it made the night super chill. The vibe inside is dim and moody but really pretty, perfect for date night or just hanging with friends. Drinks were a hit. My husband and brother were living for their cocktails (the mezcal ones especially). Duchess definitely knows how to do a good drink. Food wise, we ordered a nice mix of things to share. The Brussels sprouts were crispy and addictive, the skewers were flavorful, and the burger with fries was classic comfort food done right. The pasta with braised beef was hearty and rich, and the bread pudding with ice cream and chocolate sauce was warm, sweet, and indulgent. We also tried the cheese plate and the Caesar salad, which were both solid starters -- fresh, well done, and a good way to kick off the meal. My friends and I had a little gathering at the Rustic and decided to walk over to Duchess for a little night cap. We rolled in on a Saturday with 12 people and were able to get seated right away at a long table. For a weekend night, it was pretty slow in there. Not sure if it's always like that, but I'll chalk it up to the bad weather. Inside it is very visually appealing. The lighting, the furniture and the color schemes were very sexy. Though it was slow, the music was turned up without being overbearing. Service was great from start to finish. Our waiter knew the menu very well and gave great recommendations. They serve food, but I think cocktails are their specialty. Most of us got cocktails and we got quite a few appetizers and snacks around the table. For my drink, I wanted something light and refreshing and lo and behold, they have a section for that. The Femme Fatale was suggested to me so I went with that. I like drinks with egg white in it because it has a nice, silky mouth feel to it This had that, along with vodka, brandy, lemon and grenadine. When it was presented to me at the table, they sprayed what looked like some fancy perfume over it. I like when places put some thought into presentation. The drink was delicious. I watched as all my people got their drinks and everything looked so nice. No complaints from anyone as far as taste goes. I wanted a little something to snack on so I got the Chef's Fries. It was fries but elevated with truffle oil and fresh grated parmesan. Those fries were some of the better fries I've had in awhile. We almost ordered another round. Went here on a Saturday night and was surprised that the place was pretty empty. Our group was large, and the service was excellent. I didn't have any drinks myself, but everyone in my party said theirs were really good. The atmosphere was nice, not too loud or too quiet, even though it wasn't very busy. My friends and I had a nice brunch during Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW). I had the Little Gem Salad and the Shakshuka. The salad was a good-sized portion and I enjoyed the crunch of the pomegranate seeds in it. I originally ordered the burger, and was informed that they had run out of burger buns. They were also out of Chilaquiles, which was a bit disappointing. My shakshuka ended up still being delicious, however it wasn't my first choice for an entree. The dish was both hearty and fresh with the large pieces of avocado and goat cheese. Otherwise the restaurant is fairly on the smaller size but would qualify as "IG-worthy" in my book, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating since I visited with a knee injury. They were able to provide some comp drinks at the bar though. The classic margarita (no tajin available) was pretty strong. When we finally got seated, we ordered a couple apps + our HRW menu items. For additional apps, I really enjoyed the Tiger Prawn Wood Fire Skewers. They had a tasty red curry sauce that topped it off nicely and they were grilled well. Also got the Grilled Octopus and it was charred to perfection. The truffle potato croquettes were a nice addition as well and you could definitely taste/smell the truffle aroma. Came to Duchess for a few drinks with some girlfriends on a Saturday night. We made a reservation because we didn't know if it would be packed or not but when we arrived at 10:30 it was pretty light, we could have easily found seating at the bar. The inside is pretty, decorated very nicely, boots, tables, small sections. They play music by a DJ Saturday night, and after 10 PM They don't serve any food. I was there for the drinks so I didn't mind. I ordered a Paloma because based on the description, it sounded very good. When I got it, it looked very pretty but it was a bit sweet for me, I couldn't taste any alcohol in it. This place didn't really stand out to me, it's pretty average. I took my friend out for her birthday on a Sunday evening. It's a new restaurant, maybe open a month based on what I could tell, so both of our first time dining in. Located in Uptown Park, this used to be Belveder, for those familiar with old Houston nigtlife : ) It was not crowded at all, but I had a resy. The bar looked really cute. That may be worth a visit. I guess he didn't catch the vibe it was a leisurely birthday dinner between friends? Since they weren't busy, there should be no harm in that. He did say later he was busy with other tables. Maybe he was just new and stressed. He was not a conversationalist, nor was he friendly per see, but did his job. We had to keep asking for info about the dishes and suggestions, but he did oblige. Food- my friend ordered the lamp lollipop comes with 2, seasoned well, slightly grizzly for me. I ordered the crudo snapper. It was over salted. It seemed like the caviar would have been enough salt, but I think they salted it after it was plated as well. I guess for good measure? I would rather a raw dish be over salted than under, but that's just me. For the entree, my friend ordered the Au Jus burger, which I forgot to snag a pic of. My friend enjoyed it. I had a bite, not bad. I then ordered the bread, butter & pickles. I thought that was an interesting idea for someone that wasn't too hungry. The brioche bread was light. It went well with the goat cheese and I would have loved more pickles. I liked the dish. He then offered us a birthday dessert. It was their donuts dish, comes with ice cream, pretty yum. It fits right in here at Uptown Park area, the food is a match and the aura is definitely a match. The style is very on trend right now, it's the mid century modern-modern that has been pretty ubiquitous for the Zillenial new dining spots. Overall very shareable and inviting for taking pictures. Service was great and helpful as it was pretty slow, Alejandro was present whenever necessary, but not too involved as to be intrusive. Gave recommendations as requested and told us a bit about what to expect from the food and drink. The food itself focuses heavy on grilled proteins it would seem, plenty of beef, chicken, seafood options with an eclectic set of country of origins to flavor. The menu having a few different ethnic flavors didn't feel as scattershot as many new American places do when they have them, mostly I think because the menu itself stays rooted in the fire grilled selections. It all tasted quite good. Everything was was thoughtfully plated and made to look at just a second before you eat it. Beef Tartare was a hit, and the octopus was prepared excellently. My burger was filling and balanced out giving me all the beefy cheesiness that you look for one with a hint of sweetness to round it out. Steaks were cooked correctly and the fries stayed crispy even as they waited to be eaten. A fairly new restaurant located in a prime area with lotsa parking spots. The exterior doesn't look much but inside, the restaurant is decorated with beautiful and posh furniture. The ambient lighting sets the tone of the restaurant, I.e. romantic and cozy. My partner and I were seated promptly, and my server was full of energy. He went through the menu with us and gave us some recommendations since it was our first dining experience at Duchess. We started our meal with the lamb lollipops. They were well seasoned, cooked at the right temperature, and super tender. The cucumber yogurt that came with it was a perfect match with the lamb. After a great appetizer, I had the pan seared snapper while my partner had the chicken kebab for our entrees. We also had a side of crispy Brussels sprouts. The pan seared snapper had a great seasoning and the texture was perfect. The tomato broth tasted great and complemented the snapper. As for the chicken kebabs, they were rested on a bed of rice that had vermicelli on top of it. The chicken was cooked well. It wasn't dry nor tough. The crispy Brussels sprouts were a little too oily. Though they were crispy, I wish there were more whole Brussels sprouts than broken off pieces of it. Of course I had to have the Duchess Rose for dessert. The white chocolate mousse wasn't sweet, and didn't have much white chocolate taste. I didn't get the elderflower foam on my dessert, as told by my server, the foam machine wasn't working. What a bummer. The other components on the dessert plate were just ok. However this was a beautiful plate of dessert. My server recommended to try the Panna Cotta next visit, and I would. The way he described it, sounded so delicious. Currently there is an empty outdoor area which may be used as outdoor dining. If you want good food with horrible service you've got a perfect candidate right here. We had a reservation at 1:30 pm for 3 people. I walked in at 1:15 pm and the hostess said I'll get you seated right away after I used the bathroom. Well when I came back she informed me that they didn't have a table ready yet. Not a problem I was a little early. By the time the other two people arrived it was right at 1:30 we went back and there still wasn't a table (I will note I saw a table get sat who walked in after and there were a few big parties going on) but was very vague. I finally asked how long and she never gave a time frame just said "we've been waiting on a few tables to leave for 20 minutes" so we asked for her to call us so we could spend time else where (because they don't have anywhere to wait and it was a hot Houston summer day). Once we got the call it just got worse. The hostess was stand offish and the server was condescending. One of the first things we noticed was there were only booths and they were velvet that clearly needed a cleaning. Dust was all over the top of them. Took 15 minutes to get our carafe of mimosas, never refilled our waters (though the 'filtered tap' water was disgusting but it's probably their way of trying to get you to buy their bottled water), we had to ask to order our main meals and then once again took forever to get anything. At one point someone whom can only be assumed as the manager said he would check on our meals but then never came back to us and can be seen chatting by the computers at the bar. At the end the server tried to chit chat but we weren't having it. Truly terrible. To summarize for those who don't want to read the whole thing: - Good food - Terrible service - Sat 25 minutes after reservation time - Server nonexistent through out - Tried taking my plate which had a whole half of French toast without asking - Everything took 20 minutes too long - Manager (assumed) asked to check on our food but never provided an update - Velvet booths (and only booth seating) with need to be cleaned bc there was clearly dust everywhere on them) Truly just gave a bad feeling. If you're still reading and care, there were a few small things keeping the score at a 4. A few nit-picky things like 1/2 of the bathrooms being out of order and the super elegant bathroom having a hole in the floor covered awkwardly with tape. I saw a review from a week ago with the same set up so it wasn't just a temporary thing. I also saw the same thing as another reviewer about employee back packs being in chairs of the dining room.
