Can we all agree that Dunkin Donuts is the worst? They used to be known as cheap and dirty, and over the years they have progressed to - don't even bother. I mean their coffee is ok, but their donuts are worse than brands that were baked last month, that are sold in stores. The Canadian mega-chain; Tim Horton's was/is supposed to take over all of the DD, but nothing has happened yet. Tim Hortons is actually quite decent for a chain, but the only one I have ever seen is a few miles North in Hazlet. We now have Duck Donuts, tucked away in a little strip plaza, perpendicular to Route #35 North in Middletown. I saw them on the Food Channel and they looked amazing. I walked in and found there was not 1 donut available for sale. The friendly guys behind the counter explained that ALL of their donuts are made fresh to order for each customer. Really?!?! You pick from a photo menu at the counter for any of their flavor combinations, made from; chocolate, peanut butter, coconut, sprinkles, fruit flavors and more, including crumbled Oreos, and even bacon. Or you can have them make up anything you want. After choosing 6 different topped and frosted cake donuts, they dropped the batter unto the fryer right in front of me. Do you know how good freshly made donuts smell, even without toppings? Then the donuts are customized for you, to your specifications. Pretty as a picture! The whole thing took less than ten minutes, and only cost about 8 dollars. The taste - my kids and I went wild. Best donuts in a long time! At $1.35 for a fresh single customized donut, this place is an incredible deal. This was my first time at a Duck Donuts, and I was impressed! The young woman at the register was very helpful at explaining how DD does things with their toppings and icings. I love how they have plenty of suggestions for different icing/drizzle/topping combos. Having only one base donut is a bummer, but it's a damn good vanilla cake donut. We got three donuts on our visit yesterday: blueberry icing with lemon drizzle, chocolate icing with blackberry, and a peanut butter icing with peanut chunks and a fudge drizzle. All three were great (chocolate blackberry was the best, lemon blueberry was a close second IMO). They had some cool merch, too. i ordered a large coffee for 3.45 and gave the cashier $20.50 expecting $17.05 in change. she only gave me $15 and was figuring out the coins. manager came over and Tried to explain and showed her on my calculator that I should be getting more change back, and she said that's not what her cash register said. You get a scorecard and mark off what you want on each donut, they have good options also. Atmosphere: It is small and quaint inside. There are all different types of donuts and I would describe these donuts as more oily and soft rather then fluffy or flaky. Went on a vacation to Virginia beach to visit relatives and as soon as we got there, they told us we had to try this donut shop (Duck Donuts) ....they claimed they were the best donuts in the world! Sure enough, we tried Duck Donuts and they were right! We actually went back three times during our visit. We were beyond excited to find out a location was opening up in Middletown. The donuts are made fresh as you watch and are can be custom ordered. Gone are the days of going to places like Dunkin and getting a stale donut that has been sitting on the shelf for hours! Once you try these donuts you will never want anything but a Duck Donut! A word of advice...look at the menu before you arrive! They also have order forms you can print out and hand in instead of trying to remember the donuts you want! Once you order you watch as an automated machine pours the dough in the fryer. Your donut is fried and then pushed on a conveyor belt to the topping line. You watch as the employee grabs the piping hot donut and adds the glaze and toppings. Once your donuts are done, the employee calls your number and you are on your way to donut heaven. Trust me when I tell you that you will be lucky to make it home without eating the entire donut as the smell of the fresh dough and toppings quickly fill your car. Final note!!! I went classic/simple = cinnamon sugar with salted caramel syrup/glaze. My friend ordered a vanilla glazed w/ rainbow sprinkles and a maple icing with bacon. My donut - although simple, was absolutely amazing. Hot and soft, but crusty at the same time; and the cinnamon sugar got a bit melty. My friend inhaled his donuts bc they were so good. The problem - we are now completely spoiled and have 14+ shops still on the list. We are actually considering crossing off any that are not "made to order" - tbd. I don't think I can ever go back to regular Dunkin Donuts again. I love the ease of ordering with just a form. They were quick and you were able to watch the whole process. We came on the 4th of July, and wow the space was packed. I was previously spoiled by friends and family bringing these bad boys home to me, but having witnessed firsthand a fresh donut get dipped into a rolling river of oil, basking in what looks like a Jersey mom's tanning booth, and then hand dipped into a variety of frostings and cavity-inducers, I was sold on my next visit back already. Had a chance to visit Duck Donuts again but this time bringing along two of my cousins and my sister. We decided to go light and share three donuts amongst us four and they were the Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter Cup, and Maple Bacon donuts. Peanut Butter was pretty good. Nice warm soft dough, just the right sweetness, but my only gripe was that the peanut butter flavor in the glaze was fairly mild and the donut was definitely more sweet than savory. Peanut Butter Cup was a solid donut as well. Much more peanut butter taste which balanced the sweetness of the glaze. Donut texture was a tad denser (more cake-like) than the Peanut Butter (more like a yeast donut) which was fine. The Maple Bacon donut was amazing. The sweet glaze and fresh smokey bacon bits really paired well together and made for one of the best donuts I've ever eaten. The donut's texture was more like the Peanut Butter donut mentioned above (yeast donut) which was appreciated as a denser donut with bacon would probably feel way too heavy.
