We went around 10:30 on a weekday and got in and out pretty quick, but tried to go back on a Sunday morning about the same time and it was standing room only and had the longer wait. Each donut is made to order and you see them dropping off the line. They are still warm in the box when you get them. You choose your "toppings" to ice, cover, and coat your donut. They have some suggestions and "fan favorites" to help you decide how to create your donuts. I want to just stay here and keep trying more! They make these gem of a donut in front of you. They look amazing and taste even better. When you go in, you can get an order sheet. This is helpful when they are busy. But if they are not, you can just order. I love donuts and judge all donut shops by the glazed. I finally get all the hype surrounding Duck Donuts now. It makes total sense and my first experience at Duck Donuts did not disappoint! I know they started in NC, so I went to the one in Nags Head since I'm down at the beach. There are a ton of locations near the beach, so I definitely recommend stopping by one if you're in the area and have time! These donuts are really delicious at any time during the day! What I love about it is the process! You can basically custom-build your own donut by picking an icing, topping and drizzle (yes, you can pick more than one of each!). The donuts are cake donuts and literally so warm, like they've just finished cooking. I got a half dozen and the box was just filled with delicious hot and fresh donuts. We got a combination of all different types of flavors, but you really can't go wrong. They all tasted amazing! Their current seasonal icing is key lime, which was also delicious, and I highly recommend it before it goes away. Otherwise, I rlly like the fruit flavored glazes or just chocolate! This spot is great! We stopped in for doughnuts on a recent trip and loved it. So many incredibly unique options, and everything made to order right in front of you. The Chipotle of doughnuts? Great swag for purchase there in the shop - and super nice staff. Doughnuts are delicious and they made great recommendations in the shop. These donuts are awesome and unique. They come out fresh and hot. My recommendations are to, 1) definitely eat here, and 2) get a crazy combination. I had the blueberry with chopped bacon and raspberry drizzle. Sounds weird right? Try it! Don't expect a 2-3 minute stop. These are made fresh and to order. Usually there is a decent crowd on hand as well, so it may take 15-20 minutes. Also, these are good donuts, so you'll pay a bit more than you would for a dozen at Dunkin. A dozen is just over $16. It's true that you can have a similar experience at Krispy Kreme, but there's a sure fire difference watching a conveyor belt of identical donuts being glazed to death and an individual group of donuts being carefully assembled from start to finish. 2. These are much more like cake donuts than your average fair, and it is in fact much more natural to eat them with utensils than with your fingers (but don't let me stop you traditionalists out there). The inside of the store was so cute! They even had merchandise which was so cute and I was so tempted to buy it. Service was great, fast and the staff were all nice! Can a donut really be that great? Answer: Yes. My friend and I were staying very close to one of their locations in OBX. This made an easy decision for us to accomplish repeat visits while on vacation. Th made to order donuts deliver the freshest in the business. It's very simple: 1. Pick your glaze such as lemon or maple. 2. Pick your topping such as streusel or chopped bacon. 3. Pick your drizzle such as salted caramel or raspberry. Now I only mentioned a few of their coating, topping or drizzle. They offer so much more with featured donuts that change for the seasons. The ladies really make you feel like a local and welcomed at every location. Since there are several in the OBX area, it was easy to visit a couple different ones. You can always spot Duck Donuts with the gigantic Adirondack chair out front. Really makes for a fun photo op! My friend and I still talk about how wonderful the donuts were. Got a Build Your Own (BYO) Dozen for $22.50 (you can pick whatever you want, or they have pre-selected combinations if the choices are too overwhelming for you). Got one Bare for the oddball in our group. The cakey donuts were very, very moist with a hint of nutmeg. The glazes are ridiculous, these are very, very sweet donuts if you're doing the glaze and topping combos. These were remarked to be the best: Chocolate Explosion (Chocolate Glaze, Oreos, Hot Fudge Drizzle), Bacon in the Sun (Maple Glaze, Salted Caramel Drizzle, Bacon), Blueberry Lemonade, Pina Colada (Lemon Glaze, Coconut), Sunrise (Lemon Glaze, Raspberry Drizzle). Duct Donuts is what Kristy Kream should be. Good service, large selection and made to order. We visited after church so there's a lot of people. But we waited and was rewarded with 6 yummies! What happened? I was here last year and the donuts were amazing, as expected, but what really put this place over the top was the atmosphere, the crew and the manager. The crew looked young, real young and for kids being at work, they were having fun. The manager from last year wasn't there either. I am guessing they put her in a busier store. It was fun to watch them make the donuts and the manager was high fiving the kids, smiles and yumminess. You couldn't help but smile with them. I came to visit my Dad this year and was so disappointed. The crew working were at work, there was no fun. Not sure who was in charge or if anyone was. When you walked in the mood was, oh- another customer. There were dirty towels right next to the donuts. Then there were the donuts. They were small and more like balls than donuts. Donuts should have holes, right? The trash can was over flowing and the restroom, I've seen gas station restrooms look better. The hype is true, Duck Donuts are AWESOME! There are a few locations throughout the Outer Banks, all make AWESOME donuts and have great coffee. The base donut is a bit chewy and tastes a bit like cake, which I adore. Then you have a multitude of options and choices. For the first visit, I picked 1/2 dozen of generic donuts: glazed, pumpkin glaze, powdered sugar, blue berries, maple, and chocolate...for the second visit, I was a bit more adventurous by adding some sprinkles and toppings. For the third? Well, I got a dozen - 1/2 for myself, and the other 1/2 for the office. Even a day or two day old, they are delicious! Don't eat the free samples! Let's be clear straight away: amazing donuts. What bothered me most was the service/staff. There was a plate of sample donuts sitting on the counter with flies crawling all over them. No one seemed to care behind the counter, and we warned several folks who came in not to eat the samples. Fresh donuts are quite tasty But these are best if eaten rather hasty. I've been here twice this week and had great service and then odd service. First time even though 5 people are waiting for their dozens of donuts an employee grabbed my 2 donut order and got me my donuts post haste. This seems fair because the said employee has to wait anyways for the other employee who is topping the dozens of donuts. 2nd time an employee went to grab my 2 donut order again since she was standing and waitin anyways....The manager tells her no and she has to set it down and stand there waiting to get the next dozen rather than quickly getting the 2 donuts out. Why? Not sure why you want an employee and customer standing rather than getting one ticket finished and a productive worker. They follow one basic recipe, and the cake-like batter is heavier than Krispy-Kreme, which is my gold standard, but the variety of flavors and always-fresh, just-in-time process means these are a fun treat every time. Amazing Donuts! We visited with our 5 kids and didn't really know what to expect. The kids were excited to watch them make the donuts right in front of them. We got a dozen assorted and assumed we could pick what donuts we got. I guess they have a set 12 they put in the dozen assorted, so when I asked for a specific one for my toddler they were confused. They actually ended up giving me an extra one (no charge!) for him, in his own box! He was in Heaven. One bite of these donuts and we were all hooked. Normally we can demolish a dozen very quickly since there is 7 of us. These donuts were so rich and tasty that we couldn't eat more than one each! This is a "you get what you pay for" type thing but the donuts are cake style (I love it but not for your Krispy Kream kids). Staff was very friendly and even offered a free donut to my son!
