Doesn't look like much from the outside but its a definite STOP! They offer a HUGE variety of authentic southern food from greens, grits, pulled pork, okra, potato salad and did I mention desserts??? i for reals hate buffets, but you'd be crazy not to stop here. delicious southern fare, and all-you-can-eat! yes please! we sort of happened upon this place, because we were driving back up to charlotte from florida. it was such a great change of pace from eating chick-fil-a or mcdonalds or subway. i thought my kids would freak out, but they were all over that odd saucey mix called bbq hash. pour it on rice, people. duh. the meat was good. the fried stuff was good. sweet heavenly mac n cheese was good. the overcooked veggies were even good (prob canned, but i didn't care). but...the peach cobbler. THE PEACH COBBLER!!! you get that mess and you get it good. i was so full by the time dessert came, i had a hard time eating a whole plate of peach cobbler, but i got thru it. i was also a huge fan of that banana pudding and the green jello fluff (what do you call that?). read more

Dukes BBQ might just possibly be my favorite slow cooked BBQ pork in the entire world. Awesome buffet made with care and love by people who can really cook dat hog. The sides are real southern style and plenty of it. The food at Dukes is free of pretentiousness and snobbery. This is the food their mamas made, and THEIR mamas made...on and on back they the ages. The hush puppies are fat and moist, the black eyed peas and rice are juicy and flavorful. The chopped BBQ pork and fried chicken are good good good. The best yellow mustard South Carolina sauce in the state. Try the pork hash right at the front of the line....imagine an amazing pork gravy with real meat in it. Not good at all. We stopped because this was a half way point to meet my mom and this place is not good. The Mac and cheese looked like 3 day old Mac soup and had no flavor. Maybe I'm wrong but a bbq place should have baked beans and there was none! U have 2 choices of meat.. Pulled pork and fried chicken. Plus it was buffet style, just weird all around lol. First time here. This is cafeteria style food. Fun and very busy. The waitstaff was very helpful and kept the food coming. Each time we went up, there were different foods such as home made chips, hush puppies, corn fritters. Fun, fun. Very casual setting. Back in the '50's. Very solid barbecue joint. It is buffet style so a good value if you happen to be hungry. Standard Southern fare from Brunswick Stew to pulled pork to fried chicken. Lots of veggies, its the south so do not look for lightly sauteed - they are cooked a lot and probably with a piece of pork. Being in SC the preferred sauce for the pork was the mustard based stuff, but having roots in Eastern NC went with the vinegar based sauce which was good. Fried chicken was above average. Worth the stop just for the hash; this is the real thing! Pulled pork is a little dry. It's above average but not truly great. The sides are where the real action is whether it's the onion rings, stewed cabbage or the fried okra. They are good enough to make a northerner want to stay (please don't, I 95 is calling you back). The real test is always the tea in a place like this and it holds up. Stopped at every rest area the rest of the way home. This is a buffet style restaurant. You pay first then seat yourself. There is a loaf of white bread at every table. The food is really good. I had the pulled pork which is moist -- the hot Duke's BBQ sauce is tremendous. The Mac and cheese is bland. The fried chicken looked good but I focused on the hush puppies--the absolute best. We stopped by this place for lunch on a road trip from Savannah to Indiana. I was a little worried it would be too many meat items as I'm not that into the actual BBQ. I was happy to see they offered a ton of side dishes and just a few meat choices (fried chicken and pulled pork). The Brunswick stew was delicious, although a bit on the thin side. The Mac and cheese was okay, not the best I've had. Same goes for the collard greens and Lima beans. BUT, the hush puppies were the best I've ever had. Same goes for the banana bread pudding. Honestly, I wish I had saved more room for it! The pork was tasty and lots of different sauces to choose from. I went with the mustard base, since that's what Carolina is known for. When visiting family in Walterboro, one of our "go to" spots to eat is Dukes and it has always been great. Tonight was an unfortunate exception. My sister-in-law who is a local and dines at this restaurant frequently has always been pleased with the food. But tonight was a total disappointment. Much of the food was barely warm and some even cold. It tasted very bland and lacked flavor. The only redeeming factor was the sweet tea. We ate here at 5pm on a Friday afternoon. This place was a little off the beaten path (aka I-95) but well worth the 10 minute-ish drive! It's a buffet...I am normally not a huge buffet fan. But the thought of Dairy Queen, McDonalds or Wendy's wasn't doing it. So my friends and I took the leap. And the leap was so worth it! Everything was great. Dukes Barbecue is a very relaxed place with simple seating available for a good number of guests. There is nothing fancy about the place, but it is clean and the food is great. The customers come and pay a set fee to pass through the line and choose whatever they want from the food table that includes pulled pork of very high quality and some of the best fried chicken one could ask for. There are ample other foods to go with these meat choices, including several choices of desserts and beverages. The barbecue sauce choices allow you to have the pork the way you like it. read more

Driving down south to Miami from NC and had seen the numerous billboards for this place. Thought to myself, this place must be good. I pulled up and from the looks of the exterior of the restaurant it looked pretty good. Price for the buffet was 13 bucks. The pork was not succulent and moist like some other reviews have said. It was dry, tough and flavorless. There sauces tasted like generic bbq sauce you would buy at the store. I will say that everything that was fried, was pretty good. The peach cobbler was mediocre at best. What really turned me off about this place wasn't just the food, I also noticed a dead cockroach by a table. I'm not a southerner but have lived in Walterboro, SC for a dozen years. During that time I've eaten at Dukes, on average, about 3 times a year. One thing I can say is they are very consistent. There are only a few things I eat there, but those things are worth the trip and $10. Definitely not the place to go if you're counting calories, fat, carbs, or whatever! I skip the vegetables as they are stewed all day or fried in typical southern fashion. That just does not appeal to me personally. I also do not care for the hash or the dry rice. I know this is a BBQ place, but I think they have the BEST fried chicken I've had anywhere. Perfectly cooked, salty, and not too greasy. Next is the pulled pork with mild sauce - it's always very good. The mac & cheese is quite good - homemade for sure. As far as all the fried sides, I'm very partial to the homemade chips and the corn fritters. I first had homemade fried chips at a wing place in Columbia years (decades to be honest) ago. Since then, I don't find them very often. The hushpuppies are pretty standard. I usually skip them in favor of something else, like an extra piece of chicken! The coleslaw is pretty good too. I usually skip the desserts - they're super sweet and I'm too full anyway. Most southerners will like the sweet tea, but I opt for the unsweet or a mix of the two. I think there's only a couple of things that would make this place better. Some fresher vegetables would be nice and sweet potato casserole would be fantastic! I know it's easier on the employees, but all the plastic and styrofoam disposable plates, utensils, and cups is not very environment friendly. Other than that, I have no complaints. I just wish my waistline would allow me to eat there more than every few months! Southern comfort food at it's best. read more

Traveling for two days with two little ones! Tired and hungry but almost to our destination, so we wanted real food and quick. Dukes fit the bill! We are northerners and do not get food like this often, although my family hails from the south, so I know good southern food. Everyone was happy. You can't beat this place for the quality and price of the food. Pulled pork and fried chicken were wonderful, as well as all the sides. Chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned, not spicy so my mother and kids loved it. The BBQ sauces were all good. My favorite sides: red beans, collards, stewed tomatoes, fried okra, green beans.
