I have tried the baked chicken, fried chicken and many of the veggies. The baked chicken is typically dry. The mashed potatoes are creamed potatoes and very rich. The collards are good. The mac and cheese is HORRIBLE!!! The noodles are mush and the cheese in it seems curdled. Absolutely disgusting. Cornbread and biscuits are fine, and I've never tried the dessert. I think this place is nostalgic for some old time Duluth residents (and interesting to check out once), but the quality of the food does not constitute repeat business for my taste buds. As I was walking my dog from Duluth Town Green in the summer heat. A lady came out asking if my dog needed water. I said yes! She kindly got my dog and I some fresh cold water. The food and service are great. However the prices are way too high. I asked to have the prices reviewed, just to confirm I was being charged correctly. They were about to reprice our total, $5.00 less from our almost $50.00 check. It was only three of us dining in (for BREAKFAST). I love going to the Duluth Rexal Grill. Delicious Southern comfort foods and also regular dinner foods. I love getting the Mac and cheese, steamed cabbage, and creamed potatoes. Wow... this place is great for a good hearty breakfast. Bacon, eggs, grits, bisquits and gravy. Great place for a business breakfast. Locals freqent the diner on a regular basis and alot of clients seem to know each other. Be sure to bring cash, no credit cards here. read more

I can remember the days when my little hometown, Duluth still looked like a small southern town. Ted's Fruit Stand, The Rexall, Winn Dixie, etc. Rexall has always been the best breakfast spot in old town Duluth! I enjoy taking friends who have never been to this classic southern grill. The location is a little dated, but parking is easy and the location is easy to access from the highway. Went for breakfast, first off the service is top notch. The resterant it's self is dated, quick fixes to keep the deco up. I ordered 2 cheese eggs, biscuits, home fries, bacon and grits. eggs were great, Biscuits were out of the world, home fries not good over cooked and dried out, grits are not instant but had a flavor I did not care for, others at my table liked them, and last the bacon it was over cooked. I will go back and try other things and I want to try lunch, I only have one problem, to me the food is over priced my breakfast was over $14.00 that to me is a bit high for what I got. Used to be great, but had horrible experience today. They delivered the wrong food and then 2 servers were screaming at each other about it and then the manager started screaming at them. One server left. And then no one came to refill any drinks or check on us at all during our whole meal. So sad how this place has gone down hill. read more

I didn't know this place was open on Sundays until our after-church lunch bunch showed me otherwise. Wife and I were into lunch mode, so we skipped the breakfast side of the menu. Once upon a time, when I actually worked for a living, I used to come here to eat breakfast and gossip with other homebuilders and contractors. My standard fare then was country ham, eggs over medium, grrrrits, and biscuits, all delivered snappily and delicious. But back to lunch.....Ann ordered baked chicken with dressing, green beans, and mac & cheese. She received a jumbo stack of food on a platter. It was good, middle of the road, just like a meat and two should be. Corn muffins were a definite B+. I ordered, as the menu says, "Home Made Vegetable Beef Soup" and an egg salad sandwich on wheat. The soup is the main reason for the "4 stars" on this review. Momma could not have made better soup than this, and dunkin' my cornbread in it between spoonfuls was an indulgence I haven't had in many years. The egg salad sandwich, perfectly toasted, innards cool and creamy with crunchy lettuce and the light acid twang of the tomatoes, was the perfect companion to the soup. Gracious goodness! I live in Midtown but my date brought me all the way to Duluth for this brunch....WORTH THE TRIP! This place is a pharmacy and reminds me of a Woolworth's lunch counter, very clean and full of character. There are plenty of tables, but we sat up at the counter for added affect. As I watched the woman on the grill plating burgers, pancakes, meatloaf, chicken and another woman slicing a huge homemade strawberry cake and coconut cake....it made me want to try everything! I kept it simple and ordered the #3 - 2 pancakes, scrambled eggs, and a side of smoked link sausage. The pancakes were fluffy and perfect and the link was split with a little char just the way I like it. The owner noticed my excitement and offered a sample of anything, so I requested the mac and cheese. DELICIOUS! It's made from scratch daily and tastes like how your aunt made it back in the day. The cakes and cobblers are made scratch daily also and from what I hear, this little gem has already made multiple "Best of..." lists. Get in the car and just GO! read more

Have eaten here many times and have to admit the last few times have been a disappointment. First of all since the new owner took over the prices have skyrocketed. Last time I ate here for lunch I had all vegetables NO meat, tea and dessert. The price was $14 not including tip! The cornbread and biscuits seemed stale and dry, like they'd been lying around a while. Also noticed their score is a B. The interior is in desperate need of an overhaul. I've been looking for a "hole in the wall" kind of southern food serving place since I moved to Georgia and I definitely found it here. The food was OK. I had the roast pork, beans, peas and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was OK, peas was good and beans were passable. The pork roast was tasty but I felt like a 7 year old when I ate it. It seemed like they were serving kids sizes when it came to meat. The veggies were plenty though. While my appetite grumbled, my heart may have been thankful. Prices are on the high side. Scout mob did help take the edge off it but without it was 30 dollars for 2 one meat and 3 sides entrees and a 3.50 dollars desert for lunch alone. They do accept credit cards, so the days of cash only are gone! The coconut cake was fantastic though. It was well worth the 3.50 dollars. read more

We'd been there before, and were not impressed. At least we were not disappointed this time. This place tries to pass itself off as old-timey but it's not. It's confusing, really and just not that good. We were the only group at one point so the wait staff was not busy. We were greeted by one waitress, another waitress brought our drinks and a third took our order. I don't remember, but I think a waiter brought our food eventually. Then we got a drive by every couple of minutes by every waitress asking if we needed anything, because they were not busy and the waitresses don't work together. Which became annoying when you are trying to eat. I ordered over easy eggs with wheat toast. I got runny eggs and no toast. So I had to ask for my toast. Several minutes later a waiter brings a plate of toast, he says "I made white instead of wheat - it'll take a few minutes to get it". So why bring me white when I ordered wheat? Several more minutes later he comes back with wheat and I have to give him the white so I had room for the wheat on the table. The pancakes were pretty good, no complaints. They must sell premium meats, because they charge $2.19 for 1/2 order of bacon, two normal slices. They charge $4.19 for a "full" order of sausage, 2 unremarkable patties. That's pretty steep, for those prices you can go to J Christophers and get better service in a better atmosphere. read more

If you like southern style cooked vegetables you will like this place. The offerings change daily. Please note there is plenty of butter added though, which to me is a good thing.
