It's been 15 years since I've been here, but it still looks the same. I found the Duluth Rexall Grill back when I worked in this area, but I lost touch with this old friend over the years. Driving by just a few days ago reminded me of the old days and put them back on my radar. My family ordered a variety of lunch items, but I really wanted to try the breakfast. ------------ - - - - - - THE DETAILS Date & Time: Sunday, December 9th, 2012 @ 12:30pm Dining Companions: Wife and kids What to expect: Friendly service, 70's style diner interior Liquid: water + 1 sprite Ordered: Chicken & Dressing (4/5), Chicken Tenders (3.5/5) Biscuit w/ sausage gravy & eggs (2/5) 4 sides (4/5) Dislikes: All breakfast items Absolutely Loved: squash casserole and mac n' cheese Total: $40.74 ------------ - - - - - BREAKFAST was not good. My eggs were hard, the sausage was waaaay overcooked prior to being added to the gravy for my biscuit, and the pancake was "meh". Our server asked if I wanted my hash browns "crispy", but I did think that meant fried to the point of almost being burnt. They were totally inedible in my opinion. The servers here treat all the tables as communal. Although you have a main server, anyone here is likely to help you. However, as totally wonderful as our servers were, none of them seemed to notice I hated my potatoes. I didn't eat one bite. The LUNCH items my family sampled were much better than my breakfast. The four sides my wife ordered were fantastic. Mac n' Cheese was near perfection and so was the squash casserole. Mashed potatoes were average, but the collard greens were very good. Our children had the chicken fingers and chicken w/dressing and gravy. They loved their food and gave the chicken w/dressing high praise. I tasted it and I totally agree, it was delicious. ------------ - - - - - - OVERALL, I would say the lunch sides were as good as Mary Mac's Tea Room or better, but breakfast was a complete and utter disappointment. Even though the prices are reasonable, the a la carte options add up quick! Our final bill was over $40 and we only had water to drink. My suggestion: Lunch is the best way to go unless you like your sausage patties to resemble hockey pucks and hash browns crispy enough to use as a weapon. The exterior of this restaurant is something you wouldn't find anywhere else. It's a half restaurant/diner and half pharmacy. When you step inside you feel inspired to tell a "Your mama's so old" joke. This is bad comedy. The Good: + Food exemplifies home cooking. The food is absolutely 5 stars. Meatloaf, fried okra, wow. My colleagues had mac n cheese, meat & vegetable soup, cornbread and other scrumptious looking items. I did not order off the menu, but off the white board (listing specials of the day). + The chicken biscuit! Wow that's a big chicken! Still, it's inferior to Chick-Fil-A's [http://www.yelp.com/biz/chick-fil-a-inc-duluth-2], ahem. + The California Raisins on the ledge in the kitchen area are cool. + The waitresses are friendly and the service is good. The Bad: - Cash is king. No plastic, personal checks or lay-a-way plans. - Poor mama in the front has that old small tv screen with the rabbit ears. In this day and age, I bet they could afford a 60" plasma, but it would throw everything off. - Sweet Tea is really sweet. Wow, you need some regular tea to dilute it. The Ugly: -- The last time I ate here was 5 years ago. They still have the same nasty furniture. The decor is hideous. When you're eating here, you may feel like you're eating in a soup kitchen... in the 60's. -- The adjoined pharmacy is peculiar as well. Go inside and see for yourself. -- The police. My first visit to the Dulth Rexall Grill last week was like travelling back to South Georgia when I was growing up. It reminded me of my mom's cooking first of all, but also of several places I remember eating. I've been there for lunch once and breakfast once, so far, and both were great. Good solid comfort food, served fast. I particularly loved the fried okra, with rather than being drowned in batter and fried soft, was dipped just enough to allow a good crisp finish, while not drowning the okra. It was exactly like my ex mother-in-law makes it, and hers is my favorite! The breakfast was also great. My over medium egg was cooked perfectly (I'm pretty picky about my eggs... runny yellows, NO runny whites). The sawmill gravy was a bit plain, but not bad still. My first cup of coffee seemed pretty weak, but the refills were all fine, so I suspect I got part of a pot that had somehow gone wrong. The staff was attentive and friendly. The decor (Coca-cola from the wall paper to the collectibles and art) was comfortable, reminding me of several drug stores in south Georgia I remember. Pulled into the parking lot there for a Saturday morning breakfast and was met by a fleet of Morgan cars. Immediately, I was curious as I had never seen these automobiles before (maybe I'm sheltered?). I proceeded to stroll about the parking lot, looking at the exterior (and interior when possible) from a safe distance. Already my morning meal was starting out differently. The bf and I walked into a blast from the past, as we were greeted by Coca-Cola memorabilia and taped-up booth seats, along with tables and flooring that have seen better days. Admittedly, we were the only "ethnic" people there, but that did not deter us from dining there. We both got omelettes, he had sides of home fries and pancakes and I chose the biscuit. Everything came out very good and in a reasonable amount of time. We did feel slightly neglected by the several servers that swung by our booths, as they chit-chatted with what I presumed to be regulars (as hugs and such were exchanged). I think that type of treatment is probably customary when you ask for the menu--it seems that only newbies request these. Anyway, the biscuit was good, though I preferred the pancakes. Luckily for me, bf exchanged half his pancakes for my slightly bit-into biscuit. I think I may get slapped for this, but Flying Biscuit Cafe is still cradling my biscuit heart. This is an old-fashioned, family-owned Southern diner with a very traditional menu (don't think healthy), with special appeal to locals who take pleasure in a time-dated interior and friendly waiters. If that sounds condescending, we don't mean it. We're quite comfy here, but if you want or require upscale dining, this is not your stop. Take breakfast, for instance. They know how to fix whatever kind of egg dish you're in the mood for, and the grits are hot and as good tasting as you'll find anywhere around Atlanta. They cook the bacon well done (the way we prefer), serve up salty country ham and fluffy pancakes. Downside: the biscuits are too chewy and too often served lukewarm. Dark gravy is tasty, white gravy less so. For lunch, standards like meatloaf and fried chicken are yummy, and the tea is sweeter than the usual Southern sweet tea. Would we recommend the diner? Sure. Just know what's you're in for. And, by the way, not unlike a lot of small diners, they accept only cash, not checks and plastic. And one more by the way: the last restaurant we wrote about before this diner was Le Bernadin, the Michelin three-star gourmet palace in Manhattan. Walked in and did not know we can seat our selves. Friends and I stood there for a good minute or two before we were told we can sit anywhere. A bit awkward... I liked the decor and atmosphere. Overall, everyone was friendly. Our waiter was great! He was friendly and knew the menu very well. Definitely had that old classic mom and pop shop feel, which we liked. Food was okay. A bit pricey for the quality. My friends got burger and fries. Apparently the burger was basic and fries were under cooked. I got meatloaf, mac n cheese, rice and gravy, and cornbread. Meatloaf was good. The noodles in the mac n cheese were over done, literally melted in your mouth. Corn bread was a bit dry. Only reason I gave this place 3 stars is because of the service, but neither my friends or I will be going back. Sorry rexall! read more

Everything is ala cart. Price reflects a single egg. That's it. $5+ Now add an egg + meat + grits + drink + gravy + potato = $13. The old Rexall drug store from way back, still looks the same. (the one modern thing is the inflated price). Oh well. Food was good. Must try, once. read more

This place is a staple in the downtown Duluth food scene. It also brings back some very fond memories of me and my Dad going to eat breakfast before work. As a small child eating in a place called Silver's Drug Store with a post office and a restaurant (now Ellen's Kitchen) in the back. Well this place is just about the same except the drugstore is next door. They are open early and filled with the common working man. The breakfast in your normal eggs bacon, sausage, omelets, pancakes and your normal stuff. The staff is one older lady and a younger cook. I have enjoyed their offerings a few times now. It will be a regular spot for me I believe. I can normally get in and get food pretty fast. It has been and I'm sure will be a good start to my long work day. read more

Ok Food, $/4 pricewise, ok service. Very basic decor felt like being in a high school lunch room down to the portable fold out tables. Someone likes Coca Cola Coke as the place is sporadically decorated in coke collectibles...down to the wallpaper When we got there there were a whole lot of tables with reserve signs on them. We were lucky to get one booth that didn't have a reserve sign. I guess they have seats set aside for their regulars. Everything was alright. Honestly nothing spectacular so I'm not quite understanding why this place has the stars it has. Well I had to try it a grill and a drugstore in one so I had to patty melt and fries patty melt only comes on wheat bread there's only wheat or white bread I can handle that patty melt wasn't bad I love the fact that wasn't a frozen patty. I came here with a friend & her baby boy. The staff that greeted us and waited on us (a brunette lady & her daughter) were very nice. This is a very local diner, a bit outdated but definitely has that southern style charm. The food was good, specifically the sides like creamed potatoes, biscuits, Mac n cheese, & potato salad. That Mac n cheese is amazing! The baked chicken was alright but nothing to write home about & I was disappointed with the corn bread. I love cornbread but this was so salty & dry! What I really didn't care for is the amount of looks & stares we received from some of the other patrons there. It wasn't even mean exactly, just very uncomfortable and awkward. We literally felt eyes on us the entire time we were there. We are both South Asian so apparently they don't get many South Asians dining there?? Like a walk back into time. Just an old fashion drug store dinner (the kind your father or grandfather grew up going to). The breakfast is out of this world, biscuits and gravy are 5 stars. Best grits in town. Lunch is really something special, meatloaf, mac&cheese, fried chicken and banana pudding. The veggie soup is great and so is the chicken salad sandwich. Love this little 'country' store/restaurant. It is a gem hidden in the middle of a modern-day city. Each time I go here it reminds me of my grandparent's old-time restaurant where all the old men of the town would go and eat breakfast. Everyone is friendly and seems to know eachother. I have only been here for breakfast, so I cannot speak to any of their other food. Their food is good, reasonably priced, and quick. Had a Scout Mob for this place and wanted breakfast on a beautiful Saturday morning in Duluth, so hubby and I checked it out! From the outside, the place looks like it was a throwback to the 60's. Turns out, they prefer it that way as a means to preserve the history of the place, which was established in the late 1960's. As we walked in, it was like stepping back in time! Coca Cola wallpaper, old-time vintage Coca Cola signs on the walls, and an old-style lunch counter feel. As we walked through the door, we weren't sure whether we should wait to be seated or seat ourselves. Of course, our attention immediately went to the sign posted at the front door, thinking that it was going to give us seating instructions, but it was a bible verse. Cool! I like! Walking in a little farther, we were greeted by a server who invited us to take a seat wherever we liked. The whole time, the servers were SUPER nice, did lots of check-backs, kept the coffee hot, and made sure that we had anything we needed. My husband really appreciated the fact that the youngsters still said "Yes, sir" and "No, sir". Great server staff. The food was delicious too! I had the classic one-egg breakfast with grits and a pancake, and I added on hashbrowns (delicious) and a half-order of bacon (2 slices). My husband had the same, but he had two eggs and also added on a Red Hot link ($2.99 for HALF of a link that was split open and grilled, so I wouldn't recommend it). At the end of our meal, we both commented that this was really good food, hot and fresh! It wasn't as inexpensive as I had read or expected; even with saving $10 using the "half-off up to $10 deal" on Scout Mob, we still had to pay a little more than $15 more. $25 is kinda high for a down-home breakfast. Anyway, we will still enjoyed the food and the service so much that we will definitely be back, even without the Scout Mob discount! read more

Typical small town diner. Did not disappoint. I had two biscuits with sausage gravy as well as two eggs scrambled. Plenty of sausage in the gravy. A lot of places tend to skimp on the sausage, but Rexall did not. Plus, to top it all off, they currently have a county inspection score of 100. Great job! read more

Have been going to Rexall for the past 20 years and in the past few year prices have gone through the roof and quality has gone way down. Had breakfast there the weekend on Oct 11 and for 2 people what we used to pay less than $20 came to over $32. The gravy tasted like soap and the eggs had a funny taste. When went to pay almost lost it when was told to pay over $32. This was on a Saturday around 9am and there was only 5 or 6 tables occupied. Used to be standing room only on Saturday and Sunday. won't be going back. read more
