I'm so sad I didn't try this sooner! This is what I needed after a long week at work. For one, all of the food came out super quick and piping hot. Everything was packed with flavor from the seasoning of the wok on the noodles, the salty crispy outside of the pork chop, the fatty juices in the fried steamed buns, the umami in the sui mai, the brightness of the green onion in the fried rice, and the sweetness of the crab in the soup dumpling. It's such a great place to come and share a lot of food with people. I came pretty late (8:30pm) so there was no wait and we were attended to pretty quickly. This was my first visit to this restaurant at Montgomery Mall. I've walked by it many times over the last few months, but last night I finally decided to give it a try. I wanted to keep my meal completely vegetarian, so I ordered the cucumber salad with garlic, the vegetable soup dumplings, and the bok choy with garlic sauce. Overall, I found the food interesting, especially the soup dumplings. They were fresh, well made, and probably my favorite dish of the evening. I also appreciated that the restaurant provides instructions at each table explaining how to eat the soup dumplings and prepare the dipping sauce, which is a nice touch for first-time visitors. Another fun feature was the robot that brings the food close to your table before a server comes over to serve you. It definitely adds a unique and modern touch to the dining experience. The atmosphere is fairly typical--nothing particularly special. There isn't much music or ambiance, so I probably wouldn't choose it for a first date. However, it's perfectly fine for a casual meal with friends or family. The one area that needs improvement is cleanliness. The restaurant wasn't as clean as I expected, and I think management should pay more attention to keeping the dining area in better condition. The service was okay. I've experienced better service at other restaurants, but it was acceptable. The prices are reasonable. My meal, which included the three dishes and no drink, came to about $38-40 before tip. Overall, I'd recommend it if you're looking for fresh, well-made dumplings and reasonably priced vegetarian options. I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Good soup (dumplings)! My husband and I each ordered a set of the Lucky Six soup dumplings so we could try an array of different dumplings. My favorites were the original and the truffle. I would probably order a set of just one of those next time. We also shared the scallion pancake with sliced beef, crispy chili chicken, and the braised beef noodle soup. The scallion pancake was flaky and crispy. The beef wasn't bad but I would order just the scallion pancake next time because it was so good by itself. The chicken was ok. We took it home to finish but it wasn't our favorite thing we ate here. The braised beef noodle soup was delicious! It came with tons of tender beef and bok choy. The noodles were soft in texture but kept together very well, even after reheating. The broth was light but still beefy. Definitely recommend with a bit of the chili oil that's provided on the table. Located conveniently right in the food court at Montgomery Mall but closed off from the food court crowd so it's not so noisy. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Here are the highlights: the great service, the amazing crispy dough with hot soy-milk, and the tasty noodle soup. The waiters were quick to refill our water. They replaced our plates when needed. Now for the lowlights: the pan fried pork buns felt more like microwave heated than pan fried. The buns were small and the taste was forgettable. The soup dumplings look way better than their taste. I was super excited about eating here for a while since I love soup dumplings, but I felt there were too many things that made it a frustrating experience. It took almost an hour and a half to get seats, which is understandable since it gets busy and we're at the mall. The service was frustrating because there were a few families that were seated after my party and their orders were taken first (same server btw to make it worse). We had to wait a couple months for the chaos of this place to die down. On a weekday evening, we were lucky to snag seats with no wait. We loved that the seats weren't crammed together and the ceiling was high, which gave the whole restaurant a more spacious vibe. We ordered: the Lucky Six Dumplings, Beef Scallion Pancakes, Scallion Pancakes, Chicken Soup, stir-fried broccoli, Shanghai Siu Mai, soy milk with Chinese donuts, and Shanghai rice cakes. I really enjoyed the soup dumplings, I got the sampler and the most flavorful one was truffle, but surprisingly they all tasted rather similar except the truffle. I also got the pork bbq ribs. The sauce was really good, but the pork was very dry and there was not a lot of meat. I also noticed the earlier pictures shows it coming with bok choy, but mine did not. One of the ribs had no meat at all so I just licked the bone like a savage to try and get my money's worth. We got the beef stuffed green onion pancake and I really liked that. It had green onion slices and a brown sauce often used with duck inside. The service wasn't that great there was long waits to get things and the server said they'd bring new plates that never showed. I'm so happy Nan Xiang opened closer to home! I've been a fan of their Flushing, NY location for a while, so I was excited to see them come to MD. I definitely recommend joining the waitlist on your phone ahead of time since it can get very busy. The atmosphere: The restaurant is located inside Westfield Mall, with plenty of parking available in the lot and nearby garages. The dining area is spacious, though the tables are seated fairly close together. The food: Sooooo good and very comparable to the NY locations. My go-to starter is the Scallion Pancake. The Pan-Fried Noodles with vegetables are my favorite and such a great portion for the price. I also love their pork and scallop soup dumplings. If it's your first time visiting, I'd recommend getting the sampler. My partner enjoyed the Shanghai Shumai, which was something new for us, and it paired really well with the black pepper beef. The service: The service was great, and our server was very patient and attentive. The one thing I would change is the organization at the front. There were several parties whose tables were ready, and people were crowding around, shoving their phones in front of the hostesses, and even cutting ahead of each other. The restaurant wasn't busy at that time, and we were seated promptly upon arrival. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, and the food came out fairly quickly. Each dumpling had a generous amount of soup and was packed with flavor. The dumpling wrappers weren't overly thick or chewy, which made them even better. Everything else we ordered was also delicious. I was initially skeptical about the wontons in spicy peanut sauce, but it worked surprisingly well. The peanut sauce mellowed the spice and gave the dish a creamy, balanced flavor. The beef tripe in spicy sauce was very flavorful as well, though it was a bit on the drier side - I was expecting a little more sauce. One fun feature was that some of our dishes were delivered by robots, which kids would definitely enjoy. Very excited that Nan Xiang has made its way to the dmv as we have been to the flagship Flushing location numerous times even before they moved to their fancy new current digs. Heard the Mongomery Mall location is always packed but you can put yourself on the waitlist via Google which is a nice touch. Encourage you do that when you are on the way. They've done a nice job of remodeling the place...modern looking and clean. Good vibes. It's great that this place is inside the mall to kill some time while you wait cause it's always packed! So, make sure you join the waitlist via the Google Maps and you can find the option to join when you're NOT in person (honestly took me forever to find this for the first time). The restaurant is in the food court of the mall BUT the access is outside. When you arrive the staff is friendly and helpful and will go out of the way to help you. Solid flavor and good soup base and good varying options! The way they placed it in the steamer, it did overlap a bit more causing the skin to break (losing the soup) when you pick it up. Overall, solid 4/5 The Pan fried fork dumplings were honestly a little bit disappointing. It was good overall, but not the greatest probably slightly below average if I'm honest. I would say that the dough kind of was a bit too grainy? And the flavor wasn't really there. I've had better at dumpling district or 99 Ranch. I'd say 3/5 prob wouldn't order again The spicy wonton, now for this one it was a bit of a surprise because there was this peanut satay sauce that was super powerful and a bit overwhelming if I'm honest, taking away the flavor of the spice/mala, and it was kind of hard to enjoy because the peanut was just so overpowering. It is its own restaurant in the food court and has an outside entrance from the parking lot. It has a nice open clean ambiance. There is a window where you can see them and making the dumplings. It reminds me of Din Tai Fung. Service was good. The menu was plentiful! So many great options to choose from. I loved all the dishes we ordered. FOOD - steak dish was flavorful and tender - the soup dumplings were delicious and full of soup - the bok Choy and string beans were delicious, you can't go wrong with either and I appreciate that they weren't drowning in sauce - I loved the seafood pan fried crispy noodles!! The sauce and toppings included a cabbage medley which I haven't seen on seafood pan fried noodles before but it was perfect. DESSERT - the durian puff pastry was okay. Not too sweet which usually is a good comment, but this was way too mild with little flavor. There was not much filling. - The pumping cake is not what you'd expect. They look like mini pancakes filled with red bean. They taste nothing like pumpkin, but I'm assuming the outer flour part is supposed to be pumpkin flavored. What a joyful visit I had with none other than JOY B., my fellow Yelp Elite friend!! The waiting was totally worth it because of how good everything tasted. The restaurant is located within the mall food court area on the 2nd floor. It's going to require putting oneself on a waitlist. The restaurant was jam packed even when we were leaving close to 3pm. The dumplings and the soup dumplings are created freshly onsite. You can watch the whole process through the large kitchen windows which was fun and interesting. I loved every items I got to share with Joy!! The shrimp/pork/chives dumplings were delicious. We ordered it boiled so one would not end up having chive breaths for rest of our lives! My friend Sylvie and I went to Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings. It is still very crowded, we waited an hour to get in,but definitely worth the wait. Since we are both Yelpers, we checked out the reviews before ordering. Everything we ordered was delicious. My favorite was the soup dumplings. They were amazing. The outer layer of the dumpling was the perfect thickness. The soup inside of the dumpling was very tasty. And, the pork was flavorful and cooked well. We also shared the fried crab and pork dumplings which were excellent. Yet, another great dish was the chive, shrimp and pork dumplings. Lastly, we ordered the beef scallion pancakes. They were crispy on the outside with large chunks of beef inside. They were very tasty. I love how you can watch the dumplings being made through glass windows in the back. We had barely gotten the menus before someone came to take our order. The food was good, but I will say I was expecting a little more. The best thing BY FAR were the crab and pork soup dumplings. Filled with so much savory broth, the chewy wrapper and umami filling paired with a vinegar and soy sauce ~dip~ was perfection. I am definitely coming back to try the lucky six so I can taste each flavor. The green beans were crispy and had a nice garlic punch. The wontons were okay- the peanut sauce overpowered the dish and it really needed the vinegar/chili oil sauce combo to break through the richness. I think that may be a personal preference though! I used to go up to flushing with my family like 3-4 times a year specifically to eat here. I was stoked when I saw they were opening up a location so close to home. I've been to the manhattan locations and have been a little disappointed but this place slapped. Whoever was in charge of quality control down here did a great job. It was really reminiscent of the original location. The soup dumplings are super juicy and getting the lucky 6 is a great place to start if u want to try all their flavors at once. The best one imo was the green luffa pork dumpling. It was so fresh and the combo made me feel so clean. All my friends had a different favorite. I wasn't the biggest fan of the earthiness of the truffle dumpling but this was a star for some of my friends. It's really a toss up on what you'll like. Everything we've gotten off the menu has been stellar. Nothing has been mid yet. The wait might be long but it goes by pretty quick. Wow this place is paaaaaaacked! I went on a Saturday evening and the place had waits for over an hour. I noticed that the bar was totally empty though. So I went past the crowd and got seated there.
