    Pork bun
    Maya B.

Every time I go to this mall, I have to stop by and get dumplings, specifically the pan fried pork buns! It's in the food court, so it's quick and easy service and good value for your money with the dumpling combo.

Walking through Montgomery Mall, we stopped by Dumpling for Life on a whim as we breezed through the food court and ordered a small (six pieces) Pan Fried Veggie Dumpling. The folks behind the counter were very friendly and the dumplings were out in a flash. Soft, tender, with a veggie mash and a few bits of corn and peas inside, they came with a soy dipping sauce and a spicy sauce (I preferred the soy version). Not bad for a little snack - I'll be back for the noodles soon. Hopefully Dumpling For Life will stick around for awhile.

The interesting and varied menu could use a native English speaker's revision in a few places, though... the "seared steak" I ordered turned out to be raw (very much a Carpaccio situation), and the misunderstanding was completely due to a misleading description on the menu. I sent it back, and the manager graciously agreed that the menu blurb was deceptive (completely unintentionally, of course). Lots of fun, refreshing summer cocktails using Asian flavor profiles on this menu... I look forward to trying them sometime when I'm not driving. The mocktail menu looks splendid as well... so will return next time for Lamb Rendang and a tall sparkler. One note about the seating... unless you are a professional gymnast, avoid the tables lining walls near the bar... they are mounted on high cement platforms, and are extremely awkward to climb. As my server said, "Butt first" is the way to go... or just sit at a regular table with regular chairs. It appears the interior designer was having a little joke (at our expense). Quirks aside, this is a great place for Asian street food from a wide variety of cultures, at a reasonable price, in an attractive setting. It's worth visiting for the neon alone.

I usually order tonkotsu and am hesitant to try others since the broth makes all the difference but I ordered the shoyu ramen this time and it was delicious! I also ordered the house black tea with boba and cheese foam which was also oishii! I appreciated that they had brewed tea options since often find milk tea to be too much with food. Sometimes places that do both boba and food nail one, but not the other but this place was great on both fronts! Service was quick and friendly as well.

The pork broth is standout, but I absolutely dream about the spider ramen. Named for the fried softshell on the top (which you can ask to swap for more shrimp), has a tom yum-like flavor. Creamy, spicy and slightly acidic, the broth could be poured on cardboard and I would eat it. Noodles are always perfect and the seafood is present, but not a huge portion - so you can focus on the broth. My only complaint? The lobster broth in the spider ramen dish is not listed as an option for the "make your own" bowl...which would allow me to perfectly customize it. I will regularly order the spider bowl in the meantime with no softshell, extra shrimp, and if I'm feeling down additional noodles and broth (allowing me to indulge for multiple meals) . Bubble tea is tasty - especially the rose milk tea. This place has a counter with a handful of seats and two tables for 4-6. After waiting for a table, we decided to mostly do takeout. We can order online. Would be great if they had a spot out front for takeout pickup as parking around the restaurant can be hard at times.

Total (not including tip) came out to approximately $49. What's Hot - Menu. Excellent. It's also written in Chinese in addition to English. For those of us familiar with traditional ethnic Chinese food, a menu written in Chinese is a good sign. They have traditional Taiwanese and Chinese food like scallion pancakes, sesame balls, beef noodle soup, soup dumplings, etc... Very good variety and there appears to be something for everyone, possibly with the exception of vegan dishes.. - Quality. Pretty good. Their scallion pancake was soft, not too oily, and not too salty. I prefer the scallion pancake to have been a bit more thick and flaky, but that's my personal preference. To be fair, still delicious. Their chive and pork dumplings definitely had a delicious chive flavor. Substantial and the wrapper was not too thick. Their spicy sesame paste tofu had a good flavor and substantive. The chili oil wontons were not too spicy and had a good flavor. Again, my personal preference would have been for the dumplings to have been more substantive, but still pretty decent. - Service. Pretty good. It appears most, if not all their staffers, speak Chinese (Mandarin), which was also helpful, because I specifically ordered in Chinese. I asked them about the spice level, because I wanted to ensure it would not be too spicy for my friend. - Price. Pretty good value for menu and portions. - Location. It's pretty easy to find. Also within convenient walking distance to the Silver Spring metro. The inside space is pretty good. Tables can seat a minimum of 2, all the way up to 8. What's Not - Quality. The sesame balls are smaller than I expected. They're the rough approximation of a ping pong ball, maybe smaller. I was disappointed, because I like sesame balls that are substantial. - Service. I specifically asked for soup spoons, because we were eating dumplings. Instead, they gave me regular spoons. Not all the dishes come out in the order you hope. For example, main dishes may come out before the appetizers. This is going to be dependent on your personal preference. - Parking. There is parking near the restaurant, but it's going to be dependent on the day and time. Final Answer Worth coming back.

Although my husband and I are omnivores we appreciate good plant based food, and since many had said it was good, we had high hopes. Fortunately, Planta lived up to our expectations. We made reservations, since we'd heard it can be hard to get a table. Even though it was a Friday night, we could have gotten a table. But, it was also raining so that might have contributed to lower traffic. We ended up getting a bunch of food to share: Spinach & artichoke dip Bang Bang Broccoli Thousand layer potatoes Spicy Tuna Roll Volcano Roll Red Dragon Roll Unagi Nigiri (I didn't try this one, but everyone else raved about it) My husband had the Emperor's Old Fashioned, friends had the Lych Please and the Pom and Get It. I, as designated driver, had a Cosmic Colada followed by the House Mint Lemonade (and I had a sip of the Lych Please just to taste it.) My favorites were the Bang Bang Broccoli, the Spicy Tuna Roll, and to my surprise, the Thousand Layer Potatoes. I also loved the House Mint Lemonade. The broccoli managed to not actually taste like broccoli, it tasted like Fried with Peanut Sauce. (No, there is not a missing word there. It tasted like Fried.) I usually don't get excited about potatoes unless they are twice baked or the amazing potato salad from Polka deli, but these potatoes were actually really good. Sliced, layered, not exactly crispy except on the edges, but super tasty much to my surprise. I'd actually order them again. The Spicy Tuna Roll tasted nothing like tuna, nor did it taste like watermelon per se but it was delicious. The notes of coconut probably played a role in my assessment. Folks in general were less enamored of the Volcano roll than the other dishes and I concurred. It wasn't bad, it just was lackluster compared to the others. It tasted kind of like a salad dressed with a lack of oomph. While I personally liked the spinach & artichoke dip, the folks in the party who aren't coconut-o-philes thought it had too much of a coconut taste. I've never met a coconut I didn't like though so this didn't bother me. I would order the Lych Please if I weren't driving, it was good - sweet but not too sweet. The Cosmic Colada wasn't bad but I probably wouldn't order it again either. It had less of the coconut flavor than I hoped for and a lot more just "juice" flavor. If I'm not driving next time I'll just suck down the house mint lemonades instead. All in all, it was good. I'd definitely come back and order some of these items again and hopefully try some others. Another time we had reservations for Valentine's Day and they had overbooked so they turned us away at the door. Would have appreciated a phone call in advance. Left us in a tough spot with our guests, which really stung. Another time we had a fantastic waiter who made our dinner very special. So I find them undependable. That combined with their high prices keeps me mostly away.

I tried a fried rice and was irritated that there was a no egg option but not a no broccoli option (not a Chinese vegetable mind you), which left me with little more than a colored rice to pick through. The tofu with hot peppers hit a nice heat but not the best rendition of this dish I've had in terms of flavor complexity. The best thing I got was a dan dan noodle dish with some vicious sauce and little tofu bites. Overall though, scant portions for the money, and not quite the experience I was hoping for.
