DELICIOUS! This was one of the best dumplings I've had. I ordered the shrimp, chives, wood ear mushroom dumplings. I was blown away. They covered it in chili sauce and peanut sauce and I have to say that was delicious. I highly recommend. Otherwise, the xiao long baos are a classic. Of the other dishes we ordered, regulars dumplings and the meat and vegetable fried bun, the shrimp, chives, mushroom dumpling was the best. Service was pretty fast when you get seated. But, depending on the time there might be a little bit of a wait. We went at peak dinner time and we had to wait around 25 minutes for a seat for a party of 3. I think it is longer for smaller groups too. You have to join a yelp waitlist. You can walk around the area if you have to wait. Dumpling Story is as popular as it is for a reason! The sister restaurant to Dumpling Home, this place is on Fillmore and located closer to our neighborhood so we visit here more frequently now. The dumplings are always sooo delicious, and I understand why there's often a line or wait to get a table. I came on a rainy Saturday around 2pm and once we arrived and joined the waitlist it was about a 20 minute wait for a table for 3. I wish they allowed joining the Yelp waitlist remotely so you could do it in your way to the restaurant and not have to wait as long once you arrive. We got Jasmine tea, then split some dumplings and other dishes. Their soup dumplings are absolutely the best menu item, we almost ordered another round of them at the end of our meal. Everything else I've tried here is delicious too: green beans, brussel sprouts, pork buns (although I wish these had been BBQ), Dan Dan noodles. But the dumplings are really the star of the show. The service was friendly and checked up on us frequently. The food also came out quickly and we could tell everything had been freshly cooked. We love this spot and definitely will return! read more

The ginger and green onion noodle is my favorite dish here by far and one of my favorite noodle dishes in SF! It has a savory soy based sauce that has a bit of sweetness too it as well. I also ordered the fried tofu which is a very generous serving (12 pretty big pieces) and tastes great too! The exterior is crispy and interior tofu itself is soft and silky, glazed in a soy sauce reduction that also has a hint of sweetness to it. Both dishes were $13.95 so a reasonable price but not cheap. Good amount of indoor seating and a few tables outside as well in a patio area directly connected to the restaurant. There's a tablet at the front you can use to add yourself to the waitlist while you walk around the Fillmore shops. It's a popular spot so definitely expect a wait at peak times. Our party of 7 came on a Thursday evening hungry for some dumplings. We got there around 5:45 and didn't need to make use of their Yelp waitlist kiosk due to how surprisingly empty it was (however, it did pick up once we were seated). Interior is modern and clean, and their plentiful staff were all very polite. You order dim sum style by checking off the items you want on a paper menu that is collected by your server. Master Gao Jasmine Tea Lager 330mL ($14): underwhelming to be honest. Had the bitterness of jasmine tea without much of the flavor that got progressively harder to finish (even with food). Probably a personal preference though. Beef XLB ($18 for 8pc): steep price for a result that is *almost* worth it. The broth is more gingery here and was a nice fix for the cold weather outside, and the dumpling skins weren't too thick. Mongolian Beef Dumpling ($17 for 8pc): delicious. Never seen this item on a dim sum menu before but the dumplings were well steamed with a strong beef flavor that paired well with the provided sauce. Juicy Pork Bao ($30 for 12pc): not terrible but could've been much better, especially at that price point. Bottoms were unfortunately too thick to crisp up correctly, so each bite had a little bit too much chew with a doughy flavor that made it hard to taste the soup and filling. Okra with Garlic Sauce ($17): one of my favorite dishes. Nice sweetness from the sauteed bell pepper and onion and pungent garlic wok hei. Word of warning for the texture averse: it's slimy (but still worth a try). Ginger and Green Onion Noodle ($14): crowd favorite. Simple, wonderfully chewy noodles, with the flavors of of ginger and green onion cutting through the oiliness. Zha Jiang Noodle ($17): alright. Came with egg strips and carrots along with the traditional pork and cucumber topping - I've personally had better, but if you're in the area this isn't a bad alternative. The food here is honestly excellent! It provides a great delicious, fresh, affordable meal anytime. We got a cucumber with garlic sauce which was a fresh and fragrant start to our meal. It was honestly so delicious and crunchy that we had to devour it so fast. The vegetable steamed dumplings are delicious and have so many textures inside with cabbage, tofu, mushroom, etc. I love them and get them at dumpling home as well, appreciate the consistent quality of them! The green onion pancakes are superb with tons of green onions, but the only thing is they can feel a bit oily. We also got the red bean paste pancakes and they're so good! Such a perfect dessert with a nutty taste from the sesame seeds and sweetness from the red bean paste! Service is incredibly fast so it's a very efficient meal for sure. Wanted to see if Dumpling Story could be our alternate go-to instead of their sister restaurant, the OG Dumpling Home. I was extremely excited since they have a slightly larger menu and a super nice interior. We came in during lunch on Christmas Day and got seated right away. We ordered the mala pan-fried dumplings, beef tongue, egg and seaweed soup, and the shrimp and chives pocket. We really enjoyed the shrimp and chives pocket (their take on 韭菜盒子). The filling was super flavorful, consisting of eggs, glass noodles, dried shrimp, and a generous amount of fragrant chives. However, it was a bit hard to eat because the chive pocket didn't hold its integrity well and fell apart easily. The beef tongue was tender but could have used a bit more seasoning. The mala chili oil with the dumplings didn't quite work--the spiciness overpowered the flavors of the pork--and the signature fried bottom of the dumplings wasn't as crunchy compared to Dumpling Home. I can confidently say I still prefer Dumpling Home. However, if I happen to be in the area and don't want to wait 45 minutes to an hour, Dumpling Story would be a good alternative. read more

Best location for the "Dumpling X" chain in SF. This is the sister restaurant to the beloved Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley, and they opened up maybe a year (or a little more ago). Menu's the same and the wait is wayyy better (often no wait or just 15 min max instead of the ridiculous hour-long wait at Hayes). My go-to order is the Pork-crab XLB (pretty good for SF, decently thin skin and fragrant meat, but still able to be picked up with chopsticks without falling apart), the Juicy Pork Bao (crispy bottom, juicy inside, be careful it's hot lol), the red chili oil wontons (if you like the taste of sesame sauce and a light fragrant chili oil, this is great), and the dry-cooked green beans (not too mushy, garlicky). The noodles are all kind of mid personally but you can't go wrong with the dumplings/XLB/bao. They also have veg options for the dumplings which can work for folks with dietary restrictions. I live in the neighborhood so I've been to this location 5+ times and the ambiance is better than the Hayes and Mission ones imo - it's bright, modernly decorated, they play Chinese music softly in the background, and they're efficient with service. Though I think NY still has better XLB in general, this is is a great staple in this area of SF. read more

I'm spoiled by all the xiao long bao in South Bay in NYC, so I thought I'd stop by this place for lunch to see what SF soup dumplings have to offer. Overall, I thought it was just okay. I'll start with the great - really efficient service and cute, modern design interior. The inside of the restaurant is small with limited tables but the food comes out so fast that parties never wait too long to be seated. My favorite menu item we ordered was the stir fry okra. This vegetable is so difficult to cook without it becoming mushy or slimey, and somehow the chefs here just nailed the execution and flavor. We also ordered the pork pan fried dumplings, pork soup dumplings, chicken dumplings, and sesame noodles. I really liked the crispiness on the pan fried dumplings and the skin thickness on the soup dumplings was excellent - perfectly thin but not too thin to the point that it would break upon being picked up. Were they the best I've had in Bay Area? I'm kind of scratching my head at this accolade. Everything was good but I felt something was missing in the flavors. The juice filled dumplings could've been juicier and the juice could've been less bland. I think technically the cook on everything was great but the flavors didn't do it for me. Usually, the flavors can be bolstered by the black vinegar sauce but the black vinegar here tasted watered down, and the servers do not leave the black vinegar bottle at the table for you to serve yourself. I wish the noodles had more sauce and more minced meat. The noodles, for me, were bland too. If I had to compare, I would say Din Tai Fung is slightly better. But in my opinion, I think Din Tai Fung in America is not good in the first place. Some tips - street parking is pretty difficult to find in this area (especially on a weekend). You may be circling the block for a while. The best time to come on a busy Saturday is around 12:30 - when the first wave of customers are finishing eating. 4 tables left at the same time we did. read more

Of the modern dumpling restaurants in SF, I would probably say this is my favorite one in the city. There is something about their dumplings and dishes that is so clean, delicious, and modern. They have a large selection of dumplings, varying from steamed, boiled, pan fried, and noodles. The two dishes I cannot pass up when dining here are the Juicy Pork Baos (half crispy and soft on outside, soupy pork on inside), and the Tomato and Egg noodles. Both are my weakness....the soup inside the juicy pork baos is very comforting, savory and sweet at the same time. The tomato and egg noodles also is a guilty pleasure, a dish I cannot find anywhere else in SF, or even other places. It's kind of like a twist on Tomato Beef Chow Mein, except the noodles are the silky rice ones. I also enjoyed the fried green beans, the Zha Jiang noodles (house special dry), and the Xiao Long Baos. I would say I prefer the strictly pork or chicken XLBs over the pork and crab ones though. Just seems like when I get the crab ones, it tastes a little too empowering with crab and the pork gets lost. One thing I wish this restaurant had was rice dishes. I bet this place would make an amazing fried rice or rice cakes of some sort....ughs! Please add rice to your menu please!!! Service is speedy, and friendly! What else can you ask for! The ambiance is an inviting, casual and modern restaurant. It's very nicely located on Fillmore, close to all your favorite (or my favorite anyway) boutique shops! I also love that this place is family friendly. It's a perfect place to bring my daughter, who is a toddler. The food comes out so fast every time, and they don't mind when she makes a mess. This was so good! Even though it was bustling, we got seated right away, and our food came in quick succession, piping hot. The XLB were the star of the show -- perfect skin, meat, soup, I could eat them forever. The pan fried bao were delicious too, no complaints there. The vegetable dumplings had the chewy skin I like, but could have had a bit more filling. It's difficult to make a structured vegetable filling, so I get it. I haven't been to many dumpling restaurants besides Dumpling Home on Gough St because it's my favorite place to get dumplings so there was no reason to go anywhere else. I stumbled upon Dumpling Story Saturday noon after walking around Pac Heights. I got seated quickly and ordered four pork XLB, pig ears, green onion pancakes and dan dan noodles. The XLB was super juicy, the pig ears were very flavorful, and the pancakes were very crispy. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was! The only good thing were the Dandan noodles, the fried wontons, and the pork buns, oh also the potstickers other than that I wouldn't order any soup dumplings. The service was Meh at best! We were winding down, almost done with our dinner, actually trying to pile the plates up to help them get everything off the table easily and the server comes and tells us that we need to move a little faster and get off because there are other people waiting that right there is not good customer service! I was out near Japan town with friends, and we decided to walk up Filmore. We came across Dumpling story, which had a line out front. Fortunately, there's a stand with an ipad that you can use to join the Yelp waitlist, so we did. We were there at about 5pm on a Sunday, and joined the list as a group of 3 as 6th place in line, and were told that there would be an estimated wait time of 25 mins - I wish the estimate were more accurate, because it took us 40 minutes to get seated, and we might not have waited if we knew it was 40 mins. If you know ahead of time that you'll be coming here, I recommend joining the waitlist ahead of time on Yelp! We decided to go get ice cream down the street while we were waiting. I got a text on my phone about 40 minutes later saying that they were ready for me, and was guided inside by a waiter. It was busy inside, but there was enough room between tables to breath :) We were handed menus and a dry-erase marker to mark what we wanted to order. Pork is classic, and we really enjoyed the pork XLBs over the pork and crab, despite the price premium. There was so much soup in everything! The Pork sheng jian bao came out so hot that we nearly burned ourselves, so be careful. I wish the sheng jian bao were a little more fluffy, since traditionally the wrapper is made with leavened dough, but on the flip side, they kept all of their soup inside. They don't just have one xlb but they have many! Playing it conservative and wanting to sample everything, the four of us ordered two 8 piece trays of xlb, one of traditional pork and one with pork and crab. There are tons and tons of other varieties including vegetarian options. We also ordered the also super popular pan fried dumplings. Rounding off the meal with pickled cucumbers, broiled okra, and dandan noodles. Everything was delicious. The stars are definitely the xlb and pan fried juicy buns! ...In fact, on the way out we were impressed to see the couple next to us order THREE orders of the pan fried buns and TWO large trays of xiaolongbao. The restaurant is very cute, clean, and modern, and in a good location on Fillmore St. Food was okay-- my favorite was the braised eggplant, which was a bit tangy and really flavorful. The shengjian & xiaolong bao were both solid, but could have been a bit more flavorful (the filling just felt a little flat). The veggie bao were not green like other photos :( the bun itself was nice and fluffy, but the filling was pretty plain with some cabbage, tofu, shiitake, and maybe carrot. read more

I love this place it's my local lunch spot when in this area. As a newer restaurant they have done so well they're location is super cute and fun to go alone or with friends and family. Service is friendly and fast. It's easy to order , this was my first time ordering the soup dumpling in beef and wow I feel as I've been missing out this whole time.
