Came here to celebrate my grandma's bday. We got here about 12:30pm on a Sunday and was able to get a seat right away but by the time we left, it was packed with a waitlist. The server were great and was very attentive to my 8 month old baby and offer him water with a straw and a disposable bowl. The food was great! Everything came out fast. My favoriate thing was the string beans and crab XLB.

it's pretty small but very welcoming and clean! It's a little on the pricey side especially for dumplings but considering the city and the neighborhood the prices were justified. For 2 people we spent about 130$ the staff was really kind. Thai tea was too milky for my taste. Fresh cucumber 10/10 very flavorful along with a great crunch. Green beans 10/10 I could have just ate those and been satisfied. Brussels sprouts with truffle salt 10/10 another amazing vegetable! Dry fried chicken wings those were ok, fresh and hot but the flavor was lacking and they had a sauce on them. I wouldn't order them again.

Numb and spicy pork xlb- the best!!!

Ordered the usual since I love the spicy pork dumplings that are pan-fried on one side and gushing with delicious warm soup inside. This time it was meh. The pan fried side was chewy and hard. A bit overdone which affected the overall taste and texture of the dumplings. Not sure if it's worth it for the price and I ended up eating the other parts of the dumplings that weren't chewy. Maybe it was off day but kind of disappointing.

Service was curt, but reasonable I suppose. We ordered garlic noodles, cucumber salad, pan fried vegetable dumplings, and steamed chicken dumplings. The cucumber salad was yummy. It was spicy and garlicky and refreshing. The garlic noodles were perfectly cooked and tasty, but lacked some seasoning in my opinion (but not in the eyes of my fella). Now for the dumpling stories. Both were flavorful. But neither had any broth, which we thought they would have. I thought they were good, but I probably would try other places before coming back.

It is so pretty when you walk in here! The warm lighting and black and white murals make it so inviting. The open windows allow for natural light and the kitchen is open concept allowing for you to see how the dumpling gets made literally! So cool. The chili oil on the pork dumplings are delicious. I love the plating and the texture.

For my Dad's birthday, he requested dumplings. With our plans starting in the Mission, I suggested we dine at Dumpling Story. I've been to their other locations but not to this one, and we all left happy and full! This Dumpling Story location is easy to pass by but deceiving in size. It's sleek and stylish decor-wise. The vibes are super casual, which is nice. They have a bar with seating, a large table in the middle, and smaller tables. We were one of the first customers, having come in at opening, but it got busy fast! Service was good, and food came out fast. We shared everything family style. We ordered: Crab and Pork Xiao Long Bao, Shrimp and Squash Xiao Long Bao, Vegetable Dumplings, Juicy Pork Bao, and House Special Sesame Paste Noodles. What I enjoy is the overall consistency and quality of their items compared to those at their other restaurants. My personal favorites were the pork dumplings we ordered. The pan-fried part was crispy, and the steamed ones were juicy and flavorful. The shrimp and squash lacked flavor, as if they were cut-up pieces thrown into a dumpling. I recommend getting their pork dumplings! If you're in the mood for dumplings in the Mission District, I recommend Dumpling Story. They have sister restaurants across the country, so it's great to see them expanding! Great food, service, and ambiance. I'd love to come back! Find them off Valencia Street with street parking in the area.

they have two locations in SF. had been to their Fillmore location before and remember enjoying it, so I was excited to try the Valencia location this time around, some dishes were definitely better than others. a few were solid, but others felt a bit hit or miss still a good option for dumplings and sharing dishes, but the experience wasn't quite as consistent as I remembered

I've had many soup dumplings... and this is by far one of the best soup dumplings I've ever had. The size is good! Not small, and the broth is SO delicious!!! So flavorful! Would def come back here again, i highly recommend these soup dumplings! The cucumber was also super flavorful and tasty! We also tried the gourd with shrimp, but ah I'm not big on gourd, so it was just ok to me. Besides the food, the vibe here is so pretty, love the plants And the waiters were really attentive to us and constantly refilled our waters Overall- great food spot! Yummy!

I walked in and immediately I can feel that this was not the best decision... but I wanted to give it a shot. Sat down and wanted to get this cold noodle that was displayed outside so I wanted to get that . They say they are sold out, mind you it is the noon so I was confused how it could be sold ? But it's ok. Anyways, I got the pan fried dumplings and the boiled dumplings (bc they were out of the cold noodles). We get the Napa cabbage and pork dumpling (the most common order and SIMPLEST) & they give us this peanut pork dumplings Like omfg imagine we were severely allergic to PEANUTS. Not only that but those dumplings ruined my appetite so bad because it tasted so bad... The food was not good at all. Please be aware that this restaurant is rate soooo high due to the free food you get. Tell me why that was better than the food we had to pay for :(

Without intending to, I ended up at this place to enjoy my New Year's lunch. I had an enjoyable experience. The staff are friendly, and although it looks small from the outside, it's pretty spacious, clean, and tidy inside. Also, you can see the kitchen in the back and watch your order being prepared. I can say that the dishes' flavors and seasonings are on point, and they have a good selection of vegetarian options at affordable prices. If you're in the area, you definitely have to try this place.

Outstanding service by the staff, quick with the food and all was delicious! We had a group of 10 so we did make reservations ahead of time and had no wait time on a Tuesday for lunch. We tried several of the items and they were all a hit. There is something here for everyone.

Minced Beef Soup- 5/5 Its a perfect balance with simplicity and execution, and it spotlights the flavor of each ingredient from the egg white to the beef , shitake mushroom, and the cilantro. It is my personal favorite soup at this restaurant, my daughters favorite is the sizzling rice, wife's favorite is the house noodle soup. For me , one of the best spots in the city when it come to dumplings, certain dishes, and soups......all in one spot! Wonton with house broth 4/5 Although this was not as flavorful as the previous soup, it was perfect because it was not oily (greasy), and the wontons were plumper and meatier than I imagined, but that was a positive and gave the broth more punch. The veggies in their were an excellent touch and tasted fresh and not over cooked. I didn't add anything to either soups btw. I have eaten here with family and ordered to go for YEARS, they are super consistent, and my girls (ok, ok, and I) fell in love with soup dumplings (S.1)because of this place. Their pan fried pork soup dumplings (Shanghai Style Pan Fried Pork Buns- S.6 on menu) are AMAZING, depending on your appetite you might only want 1, or you might need to order another 6, lol- These things are pure love. Other dumplings I recommend S.7, S.9 , S.13, and S.18. Also the Shanghai style chow mien is incredible too, and is a staple in my families order. Aside from the variety of dumplings which are all to taste, fresh, and on point, their main dishes are also really good! Yes I am American, and like Americanized Chinese food....that said things we've ordered that made our mouths water with delight: Mongolian Beef, Honey Walnut Prawns, Mu Shu Pork, Sichuan-Style Noodle in Peanut Sauce, House Fried Rice (kids prefer) and Black Truffle with Beef Fried rice (Wife/I prefer) are BOTH really good and throw in their Dry-Braised Green Beans while your at it! I ate 1/2 of both soups for dinner tonight (saving the other half for tomorrow) and I must say while writing this, I am feeling like this soup order was GENIUS because it really checked off all my boxes, and I had Chicken noodle soup with veggies last two days, so I was looking for a healthy/tasty substitute. It was so good, I needed to share with our lovely Yelp community, and the review and rating is long, long overdue

The dumplings were moist, flavorful, and well-seasoned. The only dish that didn't really stand out to us was the spicy wontons; they were just okay compared to everything else. SERVICE: 6/10 Service was quick and straightforward. One thing that did leave a bad impression, though, was when my friend paid in cash and asked for her change back (There's a fee difference when using card vs. cash). Another friend in our group, who understands the language the staff member was speaking, overheard the employee quietly making negative comments about having to give back the change because it was "only" a $3 difference. It wasn't directed at us, but I still found that to be rude. AMBIANCE: 7/10 It seriously felt like a sauna inside, lol. The owners, the Shen family, are retiring. When they opened in 2008, replacing two popular Chinese western food restaurants, they were a refreshing addition to the mainly Cantonese cuisine Chinatown community. There was only a small Shanghai literal hole in the wall spot across the street that closed many years ago. The mom did the cooking while the daughter ran the front of the house, literally producing home style Shanghainese cuisine. They have regular normal northern cuisine favorites like hot & sour soup and mapo tofu, small bites like XLB (soup dumplings), green onion pancakes, and Sheng jian bao (pan fried dumplings). I often had family style dinners here enjoying Shanghai staples like Lion's head meatballs, Shanghai stir fried shrimp (use that blank vinegar), braised pork shank, and stir-fried eel. Never had the pleasure in trying their Dong Po pork. Get their steamed rice with bacon and vegetable to accompany those saucy dishes. With their departure, I do not know of any authentic Shanghai restaurants in San Francisco... clue me in if you think of one. The closest that comes to mind now is in San Mateo off the top of my head. Thank you, Bund Shanghai and Shen Family for providing my family, my coworkers, and me many meals over the years. You will be sorely missed but enjoy your retirement.
